Timothy Sexton
CEO and Artistic Director
State Opera SA
Welcome to State Opera’s 2014 season. It’s a year of very exciting collaborations
and events, with changes to our traditional format, paving the way for new
and ground-breaking developments in the years ahead.
There are two subscription operas in the Festival Theatre in 2014, both composed by the brilliant
Giuseppe Verdi. The first is La Traviata, in May, in a new co-production between State Opera SA,
OperaQ (Brisbane) and New Zealand Opera, to be directed by Kate Cherry, noted for the clever mix of
traditional and modern elements in her work. Making her company debut as Violetta is international
soprano Elvira Fatykhova, with tenor Aldo Di Toro as Alfredo and Mario Bellanova as Papa Germont.
They’ll be joined by a stellar supporting cast, the superb State Opera Chorus and the Adelaide Symphony
Orchestra. Also making his company debut is sensational young Australian conductor Nicholas Carter.
State Opera SA is the first company of the three to present this co-production, so it’s a premiere season!
La Traviata is generously sponsored by the Friends of State Opera.
The other subscription opera is Otello - an extraordinary co-production spanning three continents and
six opera companies, to be staged in October. Based on the classic tale by William Shakespeare, the
story revolves around the military leader Otello, his beautiful wife Desdemona, and the evil Iago who sows
the seeds of doubt in Otello’s mind about his wife’s fidelity, with catastrophic consequences. Richard
Crawley sings the demanding role of Otello, with Adelaide-born Miriam Gordon-Stewart as Desdemona,
and Douglas McNicol as the scheming Iago. Transported into the modern era and set on an aircraft
carrier, this timeless story gains a new dimension in this Simon Phillips’ directed production. State Opera’s
Principal Corporate Sponsor is TRILITY, and we welcome their continued support as production
sponsor of our 2014 season of Otello.
In between these two operatic pillars is a very special, world first project - three operas by Philip Glass -
Akhnaten, Einstein on the beach and Satyagraha - performed in three complete cycles over three weeks.
Between 2002 and 2007, State Opera SA, in association with Leigh Warren and Dancers and the
Adelaide Vocal Project, staged these works in smaller scale performances, but it was always the intention
to stage them as a cycle. In 2014, the entire Glass Trilogy will receive the full production treatment.
The State Opera Chorus and soloists, with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and Adelaide Art Orchestra,
will create history in Her Majesty’s Theatre in Australia’s must-see operatic event for 2014 -
a State Opera SA premiere exclusive to Adelaide, so book your cycle seats early!
As if that’s not enough, State Opera SA will also workshop three new Australian operas, as well as
presenting a raft of other programs, including Pop-Up Opera, regional and interstate concerts and a
busy Opera Studio program. What better time to come on board for the operatic ride of a lifetime!
I look forward to seeing you there.

Proudly sponsored by
Verdi’s timeless tale of scandal,
honour, sacrifice and love returns in
a brand new co-production. Violetta
is courtesan to the rich, but her
superficial world of wine, song and
reckless abandon is turned upside
down when she meets Alfredo. Their
love and passion is timeless, but
family honour, duty and respectability
intervene. At the insistence of his
father Germont, Violetta sacrifices her
happiness to grant Alfredo’s young
sister a chance of a respectable
marriage. But Alfredo is torn between
a passion he can’t quench, and
a duty he is expected to honour.
The consequences are tragic, and
Violetta’s public humiliation at the
hands of Alfredo seals her fate.
Her pretence of not caring masks
a broken heart, and hides a darker
secret of a consumptive fate. In the
end, the two lovers are reunited, but
hope turns to despair as Violetta’s
condition claims her, just as renewed
hope fills both their hearts. La Traviata
contains some of Verdi’s most
famous, brilliant and emotional music.

Proudly sponsored by
Verdi’s gripping tale of love, jealousy,
manipulation and betrayal hits the
Festival Theatre stage in this new
co-production spanning three
continents. Otello, successful in
war and in love, runs a tight ship
where loyalty is absolute. His love
for his beautiful wife Desdemona is
boundless - being both his greatest
strength and his most significant
vulnerability. His subordinate Iago’s
evil credo drives him to destroy
those around him. Out of spite and
loathing, Iago manipulates people and
events to plant the seed of jealousy
in Otello’s mind. Iago feeds Otello’s
growing doubts about Desdemona’s
fidelity, placing him on a relentless
spiral of all-consuming jealousy.
Despite Desdemona’s innocence and
faithfulness, Otello’s rage leads him
to commit the ultimate violation of
her trust and love. Verdi’s penultimate
opera is a brilliant testament to his
genius and the power of Italian
opera at its finest.

Akhnaten opens in 1353 BC in
Egypt. On the death of his father,
Akhnaten is crowned as the new
King Amenhotep IV. Immediately he
abolishes the Amon traditions of his
father, deposing Amon priests, and
proposes instead the monotheistic
worship of Aten, the sun-god from
whom all life springs. He builds a
temple, Akhetaten, in honour of Aten,
and refuses to practice polygamy,
preferring to remain true to his wife,
Nefertiti. As his pre-occupations
cause him to become increasingly
isolated from his people, the Amon
priests incite the people to overthrow
him. Akhnaten and his family are
left roaming the ruined Akhetaten,
mourning the passing of their epoch.
Akhnaten is one of Philip Glass’s
great operatic achievements, and
Leigh Warren’s beautiful choreography
adds a thrilling dimension to this
modern operatic classic.

Einstein on the beach changed
forever the way people viewed
opera. Its premiere was a revelation,
challenging centuries old taboos,
and yet offering an alternative in
which time becomes flexible, where
seconds become minutes, and
Philip Glass’ subtle but continual
changes of texture, rhythm and
melody insinuate their way into your
consciousness. Einstein on the beach
is a never-to-be-forgotten experience.
Einstein on the beach is the first in
Philip Glass’ trilogy of early portrait
operas. This reinterpretation of this
20th century masterpiece places
dancers, singers and musicians
as equally matched pillars of the
performance. Einstein was originally
conceived as an unbroken work
lasting more than four and half hours.
Leigh Warren’s interpretation results
in two distinct halves. The first half
(Parts 1 & 2) explores the mass/
energy equivalence equation and
the concepts of mass, relativity and
balance. The second half (Parts
3 & 4) explores the phenomenon,
properties and mysteries of the ‘fifth
element’ - light. Einstein, like many
scientists before him, was engaged
in a lifetime investigation into the
mysteries of the nature and property
of light. Revelations and incidents that
occurred in Einstein’s life acted as
inspiration for creation of the source
material. The structure of the work
follows the music closely, allowing
the individual elements to entwine,
creating new and complex equations
of movement, sound and light.

Satyagraha is inspired by the life of
the legendary Indian peacemaker
Mahatma Gandhi and his life-long
search for truth through non-violent
means - a concept he named
satyagraha. The opera is a mystical
and magical journey, commencing
with the mythical battle between
Arjuna and Krishna on the Kuru Field
of Justice. What follows in a series of
episodes, in three acts, spanning from
1896 to 1910, which capture pivotal
events in Gandhi’s life. The final scene
paves the way to enlightenment and
heaven. Sung in Sanskrit with text
from the ancient Bhagavad-Gita
episode of the Mahabharata. With its
large choruses, brilliant ensembles
and meltingly simple but beautiful
melodies, Satyagraha is a moving
testament to the power of Glass’s
music and its ability to keep you
enthralled.

Since the 15th century, the vaulted arches of the chapel at King’s College, Cambridge have helped to shape the distinctively pure tone of this special choir. The 16 boys (the youngest aged seven) and 15 men who pass the highly competitive audition process commit to singing daily religious services: few ensembles can boast such frequent performances to hone their unique musical character.
Acknowledged as the peak of choral excellence in the great British tradition, the Choir will perform a selection of favourite classics and sparkling new repertoire. Among the highlights is Fauré’s timeless and touching Requiem, accompanied by the College’s Organ Scholar; and a nod to their history in English works from their Tudor beginnings through to the present day.
