/è State Park InformationState Park Mapè/Wisconsin State ParksThe state legislature approved the establishment of Wisconsin’s first state park in 1878, a 760-square mile park in northern Wisconsin called “The State Park.” Today, the state park system encompasses 66 state park and recreation area units, covering more than 60,570 acres. Each unit is maintained by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Re-sources, Division of Parks and Recreation. The Division of Forestry manages Wisconsin’s 471,329 acres of state forests. In addition to state parks, Wisconsin has four national parks and two national forests.

About 14 million visitors each year recreate in Wisconsin’s state parks, forests, trails, and recreation areas. These areas provide a wide variety of outdoor activities includ-ing camping, hiking, biking, fishing, skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, backpack-ing, horseback riding, and boating. In addition to outdoor recreation, Wisconsin’s park system protects habitats and watersheds, preserves natural resources, and provides opportunities to educate current and future generations about the state’s natural and cultural resources.
