DRUG AWARENESS CHAIRMANDebbie Raible, Chairperson

This year I am asking all lodges to conduct a fund raising activity forAlex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. This is a new Grand Lodge charitythrough ENF that falls under this committee. It was started by Alex a 7year old girl that died of pediatric cancer. She wanted to raise money forresearch for her doctor to find a cure for her cancer, so she opened up alemonade stand at her house. This took off and is now a research founda-tion for pediatric cancer.

I am asking all lodges to conduct their own fundraiser for Alex’s Lemo-nade Stand. I am leading this off with a Fake Beauty Pageant Night spon-sored by the West Central District. It will be held on Saturday March 10,2018 from 7 to 10 pm. I am hoping to raise $5,000 in 3 hours. All are in-vited to attend.

Once your Lodge Activities Committee decides on an event, the firstthing you must do is register it at www.alexslemoade.org. Please registerthe event under your lodge name and # for Pennsylvania to get credit. ifyou have issues registering your event, just call the office. They are veryhelpful in getting you started. You may be asked if you want a starterpackage, take it lot of good stuff. Once registered you will get an eventnumber. Please keep this handy. Once you have event setup on the web-site, you can do many things. Post the link on your Facebook or twitteraccount and ask people to contribute online. Send the link electronicallyor add it to your lodge bulletin and ask members that are out of state orwho cannot attend the event to contribution online or send you a checkwith the event # on the check.

You must include the event # on a cover letter when you send in themoney to the Foundation once your event is complete. You must com-plete your event before April and get all money into the foundation be-fore April 15th.

Take lots of pictures, the site also allows you to upload pictures of yourevent or even preparations for your event.

Grand Lodge is conducting a contest across all States this year for totalper capita contributions to Alex’s Lemonade Stand. With all your help,Pennsylvania can easily win that contest. I would love to bring home thataward and present it to all of you at our Fall Convention.

Finally, email me the date the name of your event, I may just plan toattend.

but we should have fun doing the Great Works of Elkdom. Everyoneenjoyed themselves, which was quite evident. Another positive pointto the Fall Convention was the number of registered members, 314.That was the largest count in recent memory for our Fall Convention.I can hardly wait to see the count in May. Plan now to attend to hearthe great committee reports and the message Mr. Hicks has to offer.

We must not forget to support our State Major Project, the HomeService Program. We must also remember the ENF and the LegacyTrust Fund. Our Veterans must be remembered also. Every past andpresent Service member has given his or her time so that we remain afree country. Some have given the ultimate sacrifice. Please offer aPrayer for our military personnel.

It is not too soon to hold fund raisers for your Lodge to send yourexalted ruler to the Grand Lodge Convention. It is mandated in theGrand Lodge Statutes the exalted ruler or an appointed alternateshould attend.

The winter months are rapidly approaching. Be safe!

the Spring Convention. I look forward to seeingyou, learning more about your Lodges, and hav-ing you participate in the meetings and other fes-tivities. In the meantime, please continue to pro-vide an active Lodge and welcomingenvironment for your Members and prove your-selves a valuable partner for the communitiesyou serve.

Nancy and I wish you and your families a joy-ous Christmas Season and a very Happy NewYear. As we begin the new year, let us reflectupon our successes and resolve to be Loud andProud about who we are and what we do in2018.

Thanks to a grant from the Special Kids Network, we have had theopportunity to encourage people to plan for the future needs of chil-dren with disabilities and special healthcare needs. Kay Lipsitz, Re-gional Coordinator Supervisor, worked hard to lay the groundwork forthe showing of a PBS documentary titled “Mimi and Dona” at collegesand universities across the state.

This film by Sophie Sartain shows her family dynamics as theystruggle with the question of what to do with her Aunt Dona who hasan intellectual disability. Dona has lived all her life with her motherwho is now in her 90’s. This unforgettable story of love and toughchoices explores issues of disability, long-term care and the realities ofaging.

The Elks Nurses and Regional Coordinators worked together tohost the viewing and will encourage an ongoing conversation aboutthe future needs of persons with disabilities. Many families expect tocare for their loved ones at home. However, a community becomesricher with diversity and often young adults with disabilities dream ofliving, and working independently in their community. The screen-ing of Mimi and Dona provides an opportunity for people to work to-gether to develop options that enrich the lives of persons with disabil-ities, and our communities.

At a recent district meeting, the secretary ofone of the member lodges indicated that a lodgedonation may not have been properly credited. When I spoke with the National ENF office, Iwas advised that the local lodge ENF chair hadnot registered with the ENF office. It is impor-tant that the lodge ENF chair register. Log intoelks.org, then click on ENF and then click on“my ENF.” On that page will be a fund raisingchair logo. Click on that logo and then registerusing the link provided. All local lodge ENFchairs should do this as soon as possible if youhave already completed the process. All ERsshould ensure that the Lodge ENF chair has reg-istered with Grand Lodge ENF.

Remember, ENF is the FOUNDATION of theElks. ENF funds many of the charity outreachesthat the Elks provide to their communities. As Iwrite this message Pennsylvania stands at 42,and we can do better. There are some lodges inthe state that have not reached a $1 per mem-ber. Please assist this worthy cause to providecharity to your community and recognition ofYOUR LODGE and the good work that Elksthroughout our country perform.

We have completed sold out of this year’s pin designed by Kath-leen Daabs of Johnstown Lodge # 175. Since the original order of 500we reordered 600 more and sold them all. The pin is designed as adog tag complete with a hole so it can be made into a necklace orbracelet. We have reordered another 300. It is ideal to give to ourVeterans if your lodge hosts an event for them. We hope to havethem in stock by early November. We will continue to carry this pinas well as the Vacant Chair pin and they both sell for $2.00 each.

We are now accepting pin designs for the 2018-2019 year and todate have received 3 designs. Please submit your designs by Novem-ber 17, 2017 to me at [email protected].

The members of the State Association committee submitted a fundraising idea to our State Sponsor Ron Hicks to assist in increasing ourdonations to the Elks National Foundation. State Sponsor Hicks hasgiven his approval to go forward with the following project. Wewould like to ask both Collegiate and Professional sports organiza-tions to donate four (4) family tickets to two (2) different sportingevents held in the state both in the spring and fall. Some suggestionsfor the spring would be: Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, Tem-ple or Villanova Basketball. The fall would be Pittsburgh Steelers,Philadelphia Eagles, Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins.Since the tickets are for four and would be promoting “family” we feelconfident that they would be easy to promote. In addition to havingthe sports organizations donate the tickets we would also like to havethe promotional tickets printed as a donation also. The only cost fac-tor would be the postage to mail the tickets to eight districts in ourState. The eight District Deputies would then distribute the tickets toall the Lodges within their District. If each Lodge could sell 10 ticketsfor $10.00 each we would realize a profit of $10,000.00 with the sup-port of our DD’s. We are aware that many Lodges are struggling tooperate and maintain their Lodges and that this would be a hardship. However, there are also many Lodges who could easily sell the 10plus. We would like the tickets to have a designation for the purchas-er’s name, address, phone number, lodge name and membershipnumber so they can receive credit through the ENF to help reach theirper capita.

PA StateHoop Shoot

The Hoop Shoot season is in full swingwith Lodges holding their Local Contests. We can’t stress how important the Lodgecontests are, you’re the foundation of theentire program. If we don’t get qualitykids participating at our Local competi-tions, then the quality of the District andState competitions won’t be as strong.

It would be great if we all utilized ourSchool Districts to hold contests, but thatdoesn’t work for all of us. So we have towork harder to promote our contests atthe local gyms and Youth Center’s. Don’tjust put a couple signs and hope the kidscome. We need to get out and promotethe program. Visit your local gyms werethe youth leagues are, talk to the Directorand sell them on the program. They al-ways know who the better players are,and can help getting them to participateat your contest. Don’t get me wrong, wealways want to improve our total partici-pation number, but there’s nothingwrong with getting those really goodshooters to participate. If we want to con-tinue to compete with New York andNew Jersey, we need those talented kids.

Your District Chairpersons are workingon finalizing details for their Contest’s,which begin the last weekend in January. Our District Chairpersons are SteveO’Nuffer (NW), Pete Byron (NC), ToddMcClain (NE), Jon Barker (W), Kevin Tal-madge (WC), Dave Pular & Joe Villaneuva(SW), Kathy Kendall (SC) and Tom Novit-ski (SE).

The State Contest will be held on Sat-urday, March 3, at the Bellefonte HighSchool. We’ll again be staying at thePenn Stater Conference Center, rooms are$92 per night plus tax. Reservations needto be made through me, Steve Lucas, byMon, Feb. 5. If you’ve never attended theState Finals, we would really encourageyou to consider it. Whether you come forthe day or weekend, we’re sure you willenjoy it. Just ask those that have!

We will continue to have the “GoodLuck” in the State Contest program, they’re $10 each. This helps to cover thecost of the programs. If you would like toplace an ad in the program, contactSteve. The deadline will be Friday, Feb.16.

Our goal again this year is to increaseour participation counts and have all ofour Lodges hold a Local Contest; it’s beensome time since we last reached 100%. Ifany Lodges have any questions, pleasedon’t hesitate to contact your District

The VGT bill was passed on a limited basis. Onlytruckstops will be allowed to have them. HB1741,which would allow clubs to sell 6-packs, was voted outof committee. This means it’s on a path for a full Housevote. HB 411, which amends the Bingo Law, is set for fi-nal passage in the Senate, hopefully this will be done inearly December.

With the budget process finally completed, we arepressing for movement of HB 1313, which amends theSmall Games Act.

We will continue to monitor the video game bill forthe games of skill to keep you informed.

Grand Lodge government relations have made a goalfor charity and community donations at $365 millionfor our 150 th anniversary. We want to be able to let thepublic know that we give 1 million dollars a day.

We are asking all lodges to keep accurate records ofall the time, travel and monies and get these reports toyour secretary in a timely fashion. If we all keep track ofthe actual time and trace of our volunteer work we willexceed the 1 million a day.
