WELCOME TO PERFORMING ARTS PERSPECTIVES 2021

This spectacular annual event highlights the many talents of our Year 11 and 12 students of dance, drama and music from Public, Catholic and Independent schools in Western Australia.

Since its humble beginnings at the Playhouse Theatre over two decades ago, Performing Arts Perspectives has demonstrated outstanding creativity and set a benchmark of excellence in student performance.

The 2021 event is no exception — featuring 17 young people in performances that are sure to entertain and inspire. Congratulations to those students who will showcase their incredible talent tonight.

I also acknowledge the unwavering commitment of the dedicated teachers who have invested in this next generation of dancers, actors and musicians that will undoubtedly grace our stages in years to come.

Finally, thanks to the organisers, teachers, families, friends and sponsors who produce this event each year – it would not be possible without you. 2021 marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of this important event!

It has been a difficult year, with COVID-19 having an unprecedented impact across the creative industries. Performing Arts Perspectives 2021 is a celebration of what has been overcome and the extraordinary resilience of our performing arts community.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

The most thrilling part of my job is the chance to work with talented artists. Tonight’s show is full of fresh new talent and showcases their creativity, backed by hundreds of hours of rigorous work and a belief in the magic of live performance.

The programme is made up of a selection of the top performances from the ATAR course practical (performance) examinations and also aims to reflect the range of styles and genres found in each art form. It is a small glimpse into the many beautiful performances by the students of 2020.

The Arts tell us stories and these stories help us make sense of ourselves and our communities. They help us recognise what is good in our world and what is not and often clarify what we want to work toward. At the very least they promote empathy and entertain us. It is wonderful to see how these students have embraced this and to be in a room full of people who believe so strongly in the vital importance of the Arts in education.
