120 km. or 80 miles. Crefeld, the h<;>me of the thirteen families who ar·~i'led in Philadelphia on the ship Concordia 6 October 1683, first settlersIn Germantown, lies on the edge of the area, just west of the Rhine andnorth of Dusseldorf.

The U ppcr Palatinate lay on both sides of the Rhine, extending fromBingen and Mainz south to Karlsruhe, a distance of 120 km. or 80 miles. Its greatest width from a poirit cast of Heidelberg to Kaiserslautern inthe west was 13 0 km. or 85 miles.

By the yeal" 1700 the word" Palatine" had been down-graded: nolonger was it to represent a titled person; henceforth it represented asubject of the Palatinate who was eager to leave a land that had beende~astated by the s~ldiers of Louis XIV when in 1688 they destroyedHeIdelberg, MannheIm, and-Speyer. Fortunately for the Palatine theRhine-that ancient route of travel-lay invitingly near. He tool~ advantage of it to reach the Atlantic and embark for" the new land Penn-

RESOURCE GUIDE

The Hamburg Passenger Lists,1850–1934

WHAT ARE THE HAMBURGPASSENGER LISTS?

The Hamburg passenger lists contain the names ofmillions of Europeans who emigrated throughHamburg between 1850 and 1934 (except1915–1919). Nearly one-third of the people whoemigrated from central and eastern Europe duringthis time are included on these lists. If you haveancestors who emigrated from these areas, theHamburg passenger lists could provide importantgenealogical information about them, including theirhometowns. Extensive indexes make these recordseasier to use than most other passenger lists andemigration records.

The records of Europeans who emigrated throughother ports, such as Bremen, LeHavre, Amsterdam,Rotterdam, and Antwerp, have either beendestroyed or are not available for research at theFamily History Library.

You may not need to look at the Hamburgpassenger lists if you already know where yourancestor was born in Europe. Furthermore, you maybe able to find your ancestor's birthplace in othersources, such as local records where the personresided.

The Hamburg passenger lists are made up of twosections. Both sections have an index.

1. The Direct Passenger Lists include passengerswho left Hamburg, Germany, and saileddirectly to their destination without stopping atother European ports.

2. The Indirect Passenger Lists include passengerswho stopped at another European port beforesailing to their final destination. About 20percent of the immigrants leaving Europe tookindirect routes.

The Hamburg passenger lists and indexes are on486 rolls of microfilm at the Family HistoryLibrary plus an additional 48 rolls of microfilm forthe Klüber Kartei, a newly acquired index for theHamburg Passenger lists covering approximately1850 to 1871. For film numbers, search theLocality section of the Family History LibraryCatalog under:

GERMANY, HAMBURG, HAMBURG -EMIGRATION AND IMMIGRATION

If you are using the compact disc version of thecatalog (FamilySearch®), select the computernumber search and enter 11064. For the KlüberKartei, select computer number 755339.

STEP 1: SELECT THE BEST INDEX TOUSE.

Before using the index, you need to know the yearthe emigrant left Germany. The 1900, 1910, and1920 U.S. censuses are a good place to beginsearching for this kind of information. The censusprovides the year a person arrived in the UnitedStates. If possible, find out whether the emigranttraveled directly to his or her destination or stoppedat other ports along the way.

Most of the Hamburg passenger lists have beenindexed. The only ones not indexed are those from1850 to 1854. They are arranged alphabetically. There are three sets of indexes: the Fifteen-yearIndex to the Direct Hamburg Passenger Lists,1856–1871; the Klüber Kartei, coveringapproximately 1850–1871; and the regular indexes.

If the emigrant departed between 1850 and 1854,search the alphabetical passenger list for thoseyears. If the emigrant departed between 1856 and1871, search the fifteen-year index or Klüber Karteifirst. If the person is not listed in these, you maystill wish to search the regular indexes.

The Fifteen-Year Index

The Fifteen-year Index arranges all the names onthe direct lists from 1856 to 1871 in onealphabetical index. Though it is convenient to use, this index is not complete. After checking the index, you may still need to use the Klüber Kartei or theregular indexes for the same time period. Theregular indexes are more complete, but they aremore difficult to use.

The Klüber Karteien

The Klüber Kartei, or Klüber Card File, was filmedin 1994. It consists of two separate card indexesthat cover both the direct and indirect Hamburgpassenger lists for the following years:

Card File 1 (Kartei 1)Includes entries lettered from A–Z for:

Direct Passenger Lists, 1856–1871Indirect Passenger Lists, 1866–1867

Card File 2 (Kartei 2)Includes entries lettered from A–Z for:

Direct Passenger Lists, 1850–1871Indirect Passenger Lists, 1854–1865

Although the two files overlap in time periods, bothare necessary since neither file is complete. Thesecard files are considered more complete than theFifteen-year Index when card files 1 and 2 are usedtogether.

The Regular Indexes

Both the Direct Passenger Lists and the IndirectPassenger Lists have regular indexes. The indexesare divided into segments that cover one year orpart of a year. The direct indexes begin in 1854 andend in 1934. The indirect indexes begin in 1854 andend in 1910.

STEP 2: SEARCH THE INDEX.

Use the following instructions to search the indexyou selected in step 1.

When you find a person in an index, use theinformation in the index to find the person in theactual passenger list. See step 3 to learn how to dothis.

Using the Fifteen-year Index

Using the table shown in figure 1, get the film onwhich your ancestor’s name would appear.

The index cards provide the emigrant’s name, statusor occupation, age, names of persons traveling inthe same party, and place of origin. It also includesthe year of emigration and the page number wherethe entry will be found. A letter i or d following theyear will indicate if the entry was from the indirector direct index. There are different types of cardsused in this file. The figures below show two typicalsamples of cards from the Klüber Kartei.

Figure 3: Index card from Klüber Kartei

Figure 4: Index card from Klüber Kartei

Using the Regular Indexes

Using the Family History Library Catalog to findthe film number, locate the index for the time periodthe emigrant departed.

Find the year the emigrant departed and the letter ofthe alphabet with which your ancestor’s surnamebegins. Names are arranged by the first letter of thesurname only, so you may need to search the entiresection to find the person you are looking for.

Page 23: States with Early German Populationfiles.lib.byu.edu/.../research-outlines/Europe/GermansToAmerica.pdf · F 395 .G3 B47 1930 #14: ... Pennsylvania magazine of history and biography

5

NOTE: Each letter of the alphabet was allottedonly a certain number of pages. When these pageswere filled, the rest of the names beginning with thatletter were continued on the unused pages underanother letter. There may or may not be a noteindicating this happened. Therefore, search all ofthe end pages assigned to other letters if yourancestor’s name is not listed where it should be.

Figure 3 below is a sample of an entry from theregular index. The actual format of the indexes varyover time. Notice the type of information providedwithin these entries.

Figure 5: A Regular Index Entry

An index entry contains:

1. The name of the ship.2. The departure date of the ship (28 June

1893).3. The passenger's name.4. The name of the ship's captain.5. The name of the destination port.6. The page this information is found on the

actual passenger lists.

When you find the emigrant in the index, note thenumber following the name (see number 6 in figure3). This number indicates which page the nameappears on in the passenger list. In some cases pagenumbers are dittoed, referring to the previous page.Occasionally, large page numbers are partiallydittoed. For example, pages 1086, 1087, and 1088might appear as 1086, 87, 88.

Next, move up the column until you find thedeparture date (see number 2 in figure 3). Whenyou have both the departure date and page number, you are ready to find the emigrant in the passengerlist.

If you cannot find a person in the index to the directlists, follow the steps outlined here to search theindex to the Indirect Lists.

STEP 3: OBTAIN THE DESIREDPASSENGER LIST.

Once you have found your ancestor in an index, you will want to get the actual passenger list onwhich that person appears. Film numbers for thepassengers lists appear after the regular indexes inthe Family History Library Catalog.

CAN'T FIND YOUR ANCESTOR IN THE INDEXES?

If you cannot find an emigrant in the indexes, there are several possible reasons.

1. The emigrant did not sail from Hamburg. He or she may have sailed from one ofseveral other ports in Europe, most ofwhich have few or no records available.

2. The person was listed on another pagebecause the first page was full. Search theend sections of other letters of thealphabet.

3. The name was spelled differently than itappears in your records. Look for alternatespellings of the name.

4. The person emigrated at a different date.

STEP 4: SEARCH THE PASSENGER LIST.

In the passenger list, turn to the page number youfound in the index. On some passenger lists anumbered page is followed by one or moreunnumbered pages. If your ancestor's name does notappear on the numbered page, search theunnumbered page(s) immediately following it.

Figure 4 shows an example of a passenger list.Format and titles may vary by shipping line andyear.
