STATIC FROM HQ As t h i s i s s u e w i l l he hand-delivered to those attending the ST. 10UIS CONVENTION, w e ' l l s t a r t off by wishing that everyone has a good time and that our business sessions w i l l be s u c c e s s f u l . Speaking of conventions, both Ted and Gary are at IRCA's convention t h i s weekend (Aug. 25-26) and so Dick and your t y p i s t (Pat) are bringing you t h i s masterpiece! I f you haven't noticed already, we're using computer generated mailing l a b e l s f o r t h i s i s s u e . We ask that you check the l a b e l very c l o s e l y for accuracy and l e t Gary Atkins know i f anything i s wrong. Write Gary at HQ address. For a couple of l o g i s t i c a l reasons, we had to l i m i t DX News to 29 pages t h i s time. We're holding Domestic DX Achievements, another installment i n Ronald Sohatz's Terminator T r a n s i t Mechanix s e r i e s , a sports network l i s t i n g by B i l l Hardy, Afr Graph and a Verie Signers. An important NOTE regarding DDXA, the next deadline w i l l be October 1. Since t h i s column won't appear u n t i l next i s s u e , Sept. 29, we urge you to send your updates to Don r i g h t away. H e ' l l send a reporting form upon r e c e i p t of your SASE. Don E r i c k s o n , 6059 Essex S t r e e t , R i v e r s i d e , CA 92509. A s p e c i a l thanks to our i r r e g u l a r e d i t o r s , that i s i r r e g u l a r columns, f o r the f i n e typing jobs they did with t h e i r columns. Insi d e y o u ' l l f i n d a b i t of information about an ionospheric experiment to be conducted Sept. 19. We're not sure what e f f e c t , i f any, t h i s w i l l have on MW s i g n a l s but suspect s i g n a l s on the upper end of the band may be d i s torted. Members i n Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic are urged to report any disturbances to the coordinator whose address i s i n the a r t i c l e . L a s t l y , we'd l i k e to pause i n the DX News routine to look back to 1933 — to Labor Day Weekend. On that weekend 96 years ago the National Radio Club was founded. Many "old-timers" are s t i l l i n NRC and we'd l i k e to s a l u t e them
We welcome the following new members and urge them to become an a c t i v e part of NRC! Craig A. ® THE GREAT IONOSPHERIC-HOLE EXPERIMENT
An experiment w i l l be conducted Friday Morning, September 19 which may present a unique DX opportunity. An Atlas-Centaur rocket i s to be launched from the Kennedy Space Center i n F l o r i d a to a point 966 km (290 miles) to the E a s t . I t ' s purpose i s to create an a r t i f i c i a l "hole" i n the 300 km high F - l a y e r , thus disturbing ionospheric propagation. Such disturbances could become common i f huge solar-power-collecting s a t e l l i t e s are someday put into o r b i t to help solve America's problems. The experiment w i l l create a very l a r g e "hole" i n the F - l a y e r for a period of four hours or longer at 12:30 a.m. EST. The F-region electrons, which are responsible for the bending of radio waves, are to be g r e a t l y reduced, causing a weakening or even f a i l u r e of radio c i r c u i t s for the four hour period. A d i s c u s s i o n of the experiment, oriented mostly toward high-frequency amateur transmissions, i s contained i n the September 1979 QST.
A copy of a l e t t e r from Joe R e i s e r t , W1JR, 17 Mansfield Drive, Chelmsford, Mass. 01829 was forwarded to us. I n i t he outlined preparations presently under way: ( l e t t e r forward by P h i l S u l l i v a n )
Beacons are presently planned and under construction. A 19.1 MHz cw 100 watt t r a n s m i t t e r i s top p r i o r i t y and i s to be i n s t a l l e d on Puerto Rico near Arecibo hopefully with other u n i t s on 7 MHz. The US Navy w i l l have RTTY c i r c u i t s a c t i v e on HF from KP9, KG9, VP9 and Washington, D.C. areas*. Several Channel 2 t r a n s m i t t e r s are located i n the v i c i n i t y of Puerto Rico and surrounding i s l a n d s as well as AM (550-1600) s t a t i o n s . These w i l l a l l provide e x c e l l e n t monitoring beacons f o r USA and VP9 stns Observations of s i g n a l strength on beacons and other s t a t i o n s are most de s i r e a b l e . Signal strength should be monitored every 2 to 5 minutes before launch and a f t e r launch for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes from launch observations can be stretched to every 5-10 minutes. The use of a s t r i p recorder on the AGO or s i g n a l strength monitor of the r e c e i v e r i n use i s highly desired. P r e c i s i o n attenuators i n the I F or ahead of the r e c e i v e r can be used to c a l i b r a t e the "S Meter" f o r accuracy. Fading, QRM, unusual e f f e c t s , modulation, e t c . are a l l things to monitor and report
According to Mr. R e i s e r t there should be a reduction of the maximum usuable frequency along the rocket's path. This should drop from approximately 16 MHz to below 19 MHz. No s p e c i f i c e f f e c t on MW was predicted but based on our knowledge of propagation ( a l b e i t l i m i t e d ) some unusual e f f e c t s may r e s u l t , p a r t i c u l a r l y on the higher MW frequencies. On the HP's, i d e a l l o c a t i o n s for monitoring the e f f e c t s of the experiment f a l l on a l i n e from St. Louis to j u s t below Washington, D.C, through L o u i s v i l l e and Ashland, Kentucky. For more info please write Mr. R e i s e r t and r e f e r to the QST a r t i c l e . ( * c a l l l e t t e r s l i s t e d above are f o r Puerto Rico, Guantanamo Bay and Bermuda

Wow! Did I get mail this month! I've lost track of how many complained about my listing
of WGSM - 740 going full time. I'll repeat this below but, fellows, that was m y goof, not
the FCC's. I should have noted that they will sign off at sunset and the power I listed
for night operation was only for "Critical Hour" operation. I owe a particular apology to
BRYAN LEE who first reported the error to me...after he had taken the trouble to check with
WGSM. Thanks, Bryan.
MORT MEEHAN has written a couple of times and, at his suggestion, I'm reprinting some of
the code letters used throughout AM SWITCH:
DA - Directional Antenna. DA-N = Directional Antenna at night only. DA-1 • DA with the same pattern day and night. DA-2 • DA with different patterns day and night (or day an C H ) . DA-3 = DA with two different day patterns & one at night; typical use would
be for a "day", "CH" and "night" pattern. CH • Critical Hours meaning 2 hours before sunset and 2 hours after sunrise
SH = Specified hours of operation.
Here, now, is this month's edition:

GARY HOUDEK points out that the new Call Letters KRZJ, Beloit, Kansas I mentioned last month were okay, but I incorrectly listed KRZJ at 1100 kHz; should be 1190 kHz. And LYNN GILLIS mentioned that WKLO's change to WKJJ occurred well before last month's edition came out. That's apt to happen, Lynn.dueto deadlines (Today, for instance, is August 20th) We do our best... that's all. MORT MEEHAN points out that all radio starts and ends in Kingman, Arizona! Look it up for yourself...KAAA and KZZZ are both there! (and are both owned by the same people). Thanks to these people and everyone else who wrote in...keep the comments coming! c —

CFTR move gets approval
GRIMSBY — The Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission has approved an application by Rogers Radio Broadcasting Ltd. of Toronto to relocate its broadcasting facilities for radio station CFTR from Mississauga to Gnmsby
The CRTC decision applies only to the technical move. Negotiations to
E r i c R o s s i t e r
actually build eight 300-foot towers on an 83-acre site on Winston Road overlooking Lake Ontano must be worked out with the Town of Gnmsby and property owners.
Jim Sward, president of Rogers Radio, said in June that the move-was necessary because the tall sleel reinforced buildings near the transmission site in Mississauga were
causing CFTR's signal to interfer. with the signal of a radio station it Rochester, N.Y.. which broadcast on the AM 680 frequency, the sam-frequency CFTR uses
The CRTC decision also allows th-company to double its daytime sir nal from 25,000 watts to 50,000. Tin nighttime signal is restricted lu la.-000 watts.

You are picking up radiation from your TV set. To produce a picture on a TV s e t , it is necessary to scan the screen at about a 15,750 Hz rate. Due to the high power of the circuitry required to do this and the inexpensive construction of many TV sets, there is significant leakage of this signal. You have, in effect, a 25-watt transmitter radiating harmonics of 15.75 kHz into the air and power lines. The only sure cure is to turn the TV set off. However, if others want to watch while you D X , then you have a problem. You might also try some RF filters which plug into a wall socket and the TV or radio plugs into the filter. Try one between the TV cord and the wall and one between the DX-160 and the w a l l . This will reduce any signal going into the powerlines and reduce any signal from the power lines coming into the receiver via the power cord.

Radio Shack really does sell them although a given Radio Shack store may not have them in stock when you ask . It's known as the "Long-Range AM Portable" with stock number 12-655. When you give them the stock number, they should know what you are talking about. It has come to be called "TRF" by DXers since it is advertised as having a Tuned RF stage unlike most portables.
For the many who are interested in the beacon log, it is in the final stages of preparation. All the U . S . and foreign beacons have been finalized. When the Canadians stop playing games with their call signs and decide which set of calls they are going to u s e , they will be finalized. As it stands now, there are over 4000 beacons and I hope to have it to press by September. Cost is going to be between $6 and 57. 50.
More when I get m o r e . -30- J o h n elements
Addendum from HQ - After John's column was received here we learned from an NRC member, now working f o r Radio Shack, that the TRF's future i s highly questionable. I t appears i n the newest catalog but i t no longer i s l i s t e d on store order sheets to obtain more stock from Radio Shack warehouses. At the moment, then, there are quite a few i n stores but a f t e r they are gone, add i t i o n a l stock i s u n l i k e l y . We expect more info l a t e r on t h i s .

MONTVILLE, N.J. 070^-5
The youngest ever editor of one of the N.R.C.'s irregular columns is back again for a second year at another fun-packed(we hope) season of intense DX competition and whatever. I hope to serve the membership a great menu of Contests for the MW D X ' e r , all designed to act as supplements to your regular routine of DX'ing. Contests will break the monotony of your own set way of DX'ing and allow you to put all of your DX'ing skills to work against others. With that in mind I hope many will participate. Your efforts will reap you a great reward in the end. The Grand Pri2e again this year will be a free one-year subscription to DX N e w s . I tried to up the cash value of the Grand Prize this year but NRC is run on a tight budget, so I had to respect that. This being the first Contests column of the coming 79-80 season its purpose will act as an introduction to what will be the story of the season. What I have done this time around that I didn't do last time is to present you with all of the Contest ideas of my own plus those I have selected from members, right in front of your beady little e y e s . What I would like all of you to do is review the following list of possible Contests and let me know which _5 you like the m o s t . After I get all the responses I will tabulate all of the favorites and the ones that come out on top will become the established Contests for the coming season. This way I'll be able to satisfy as many of you as possible and not just set m y favorites as the official ones just because I want t o . Who the heck am I to do that? Contests has now suddenly changed from a total dictatorship to a semi-democracy, h i !
Without further a d o , here they a r e . Those asterisked denote Contest ideas I have selected from members' contributions. Point values, lengths of Contests, e t c . , and other details have been omitted for now:
* 1 . Only stations that count will be the stations that have the same national network. Ex: all of the stations you submit must be either A B C , C B S , or N B C , you have your choice of what network you w a n t .
* 2 . Only stations that count will be the stations in the 50 state capitals.
* 3 . Only stations that will count will be those only on graveyard frequencies.
* 4 . A Contest to see how many states you can log, each represented by at least one
station.
* 5 . A Contest to see how many counties of states you can log, each represented by at
least one station.
* 6 . A Cuba/Oceania DX SimulContest.
* 7 . A TA/TP DX SimulContest.
8 . A simultaneous Canada/Mexico Contest.
9 . Only stations that will count will be those stations that spell out w o r d s , either
forwards, backwards or jumbled.
10. Only stations that will count are NSP stations, as per NRC Domestic L o g .
1 1 . Pick a state, any state, and stations you send in from your selected state will count.
1 2 . Stations on even frequencies, stations on odd frequencies, your choice.
13. Canadian stations that relay other Canadian stations.
14. Stations only with a pre-sunrise power other than 500 w a t t s .
1 5 . DX stations from cities beginning with the same letter, of your own choice. If you choose the letter "A" stations could only count in such places as Atlanta, Abilene, Augusta, e t c .
*16. Only stations that will count are ones with the same power day/nite.
17. Stations only in cities obviously bordering on bodies of water.
18. Stations with call-letters that are in some obvious way correlated with the station's location. Ex: WELY-Ely, Minn., WFRA-Franklin, P a., WKDZ-Cadiz, K y . , WIMA-Lima, O h i o , WRAB-Arab, Ala., e t c .
L9. Verification Contest. One of the two Contests T have devised to catch the
cheater. Any stations you choose to verify is O.K. This Contest will last one
week to hear the stations and will allow one month for verie r e t u r n s . Person
who sends me the most veries of receptions during the Contest will be the w i n n e r .
20. Only stations that will count are those on the published NRC Baseball L i s t s .
2 1 . Only stations that will count are those on the published NRC Larry King Network
list.
2 2 . Only stations that will count will be those of cities on the coastline of the U . S .
•-23. Only stations that will count will be those with J3 call-letters.
*24. A 24 hour Contest-just loggings: 6a.m. Sun.-6a.m. M o n .
2 5 . A 6 hour Contest- 12-6a.m. any day you w i s h , only stations testing will c o u n t .
26. Stations heard signing off at least one-half hour after your local SS time.
27. Stations heard signing on between 5:45 and 6:15a.m. will count o n l y .
2 8 . Taping Contest. The other one to prevent cheating. Tape all the stations
you can but for one to count it must contain the following: a clear I.D. of the
station followed by a portion of one current C & W , Soul or top 40 song. You
must record the part of the song with the title sung and you must voice I.D. the
title of the song so I can check it out according to cutrent Billboard magazine
music charts. To participate in the Contest you must be knowledgeable in at least
one area of current C&W, Soul or Top 40 m u s i c . I.D. must immediately precede or
follow the song. I.D. should flow right into the song or come right after the
song, if you know what I m e a n . I will listen very closely for cheaters, those
who will get the I.D., stop the tape and then record a song off another station
or whatever. No good. The format of the station and of the song must m a t c h .
This means that all of the stations you record don't have to be all C&W or Top 40
stations. You can have a little of each, whatever you w i s h .
All you have to do now is write down the five you like the most on something, a piece
of cardboard, toilet tissue, a cereal box top, anything you like, but paper would be
most appreciated. Stick it an envelope and mail it to the person typing this column
and we'll see what turns o u t . Don't dilly-dally though, deadline for responses from
all concerning this will be no later than midnight September 2 1 . That gives you 17
days from the time DX News should arrive ac your door until the deadline. That should
be plenty of time. I'll be looking forward to hearing from many of you and until next
time remember the old adage:
It's winning that counts
It's not how you DX the Contest.
Don't let this give all of you prospective cheaters any excuse, h i .
'Pirate' AM Station Seeks Legitimacy Dick Dorwart. the bootleg broadcaster who wants to go
legit, faces just one real handicap. It's not osteogenesis imperfecta. He's had to live with
what most people know as brittle bones all his life, the first 10 years in traction and the last 22 in a wheelchair. All told, he's suffered 196 breaks.
No. what handicaps Dorwart's broadcasting career is the lack of a broadcast license from the Federal Communica-, lions Commission.
He needs that to return KDOR to the 830 spot on the AM radio dial he pirated for 10 months until the FCC ordered him off the air last Feb. 18.
To support his application, Dorwart backed his electric cart out of the driveway of his parents' Hollywood house-home of KDOR—Friday and pointed its painted smile and
KDOR Is Coming" sign toward Santa Monica Beach. There, this weekend and next, Dorwart and his friends
hope to gather 15.000 signatures affirming the West Side's need fpr non-format radio.
T knew what 1 was doing was illegal." Dorwart said of his bootleg operation. "But Los Angeles needed altemaUve broadcasting."
His nonformat radio has heen described, he said, as "all over the house." That is almost literally true. His records are strewn everywhere. His broadcast included generous doses of public-affairs announcements, sometimes voiced by well-known announcers Like Gary Owens.
He took to the airwaves from 6 p.m. to midnight week
days and 12 hours a day on weekends—hours whew the FCC was closed
"All the work was done by volunteers." Dorwart sagL.T never made a cent from the operation."
Four volunteer diao jockeys spun their own records, and Don Saunders, chief engineer al a Burbank station, kept the 50-watt transmitter working.
If he gets FCC sanction to resume broadcasting, KDOR will take to the air with a 1,000- watt transmitter he plans to locate in Santa Monica. He will have, he insists, $150,000 in backing.
But for now, he said, the important thing ia community support, which his volunteers will seek today and Sunday roving along the beach between Santa Monica and Venice piers.
"Not even President Carter could get me a station." Dorwart said the FCC told him. "Only the people of Santa Monica and West LA. can get me one."
The 830 AM wavelength would have to be shared with a pair of broadcast giants, WCCO in Minneapolis and KIK1 in Honolulu. So "to protect them," he said, KDOR proposes to broadcast only during daylight hours, when radio signals carry less far.
His new signal, he estimated, would enlarge KDOR's former 50-watt range of San Clemente-Woodland Hills to stretch from San Diego to Fresno.

folks could move the convention dates u p a feu d a y e . Schools in many places start in late
August & early September w h i c h rules out conventions for seve r a l . Holding conventions in

to D X , 1 heard 119 etatione while in A r k . for Christmas, ani I've heard 103 more from 7/10
to 7/15. I'm aiming at 400 by 8/6 or roughly 80 stations a w e e k . No locale here except
KWTO-560 8c KHOZ-900 during the da y . What do you people uee for logs? I u e e Radio Shack

special oases (e.g., if a 5kw daytimer opens u p a 250w night rig I may log it a g * i ) . If
there's ary doubt, I don't log a station. I don't log call changes or power increases,
though the former ie no t e d . I w a n t a n ID on a domestic before I log i t . Foreign: I u s u
ally w a n t a n ID on LAs but I will take clear city mentions if there ia no doubt as to which
station I'm hearing (e/g. mentions of Guayaqu il on 9 9 5 ) . TAs need only provide audio and
distinguishable language (e.g. F F on 1557, GG on 1593 o r SS on 1 5 8 4 ) . If there ie ever a
doubt, I will wait for ID but only widely reported TAa make It here.

Tha other competing systems, all hoping to become the national standard (Harris, Belar,

which is still mine but only gets checked infrequently aa it's a 330 mile round trip.
Anyone who happens to pick u p E T I L , of course, ie free to write to me and I'll provide the
v e r i e . The station underwent a format change along w i t h new management about three
months ago, changing from rock to a n MoR/variety format to appeal to an older (35-49) and
nuch m o r e affluent, in this community, demographic. Unfortunately, the new G M de sales
ani rot programming oriented, so it wae pretty m u c h o f a mess u n t i l I got h e r e . It's
quite consuming of time, a lot of w o r k , a challenge and lots of f u n . s o , if I'm behind

m y nearest local ie 70 miles over the Coast Bangs in Portland. I haveni t had Ouch of a

5am (ugh!) the dial seems quite a l i v e . Only a few roticable changes from Eugene, except
that everything's a lot better in strength 4 readability. Tha m a i n changes seem to be
1430 (JCRBC le dominant instead of E A R M / E L O ) , 1370 (CHRK instead of KTLC 4 EBDF s l o p ) , 1590
after ETIL (KZOE instead of E L I V ) , 4 o f course, all the graveyardera a n d semi-locale like

ECYX-1360, same format, etc., and the old Vancouver, R a t h . 910 facility (ex-EISN) it rum

they contacted ETIL's NxD while looking for people, and KGR'e tales manager confirmed they
expect to be o n the air soon. Should be interesting. Out of room - mora next time. 7 3 ' s .

Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. I didn't D X any but I did listen quite a bit to German
R a d i o . I was gone 12 daye 4 w e stayed with three families that are friends of mine/my

fourth network ie only o n briefly for foreign w o r k e r s . One network ie mostly ol m x , a n

American to German, Johnny Cash to S t y x to Sinatra to Bavarian folk m x , a real bodge p o d g e .
I aleo heard American Forces Network, A F N , as it is known is run hy the Dieferoe D e p ' t . for

ie 11-12 ELT a r t country from 3-6, 8-11 E L T . The country program wae called "Country

down the amount of local elSctrical noise pick-up. Since communications-type receivers
have too m u c h gain for the M? band with large antennae, I always wonder if an amplifier
built into a loop antenna is really needed. I u s e only a email ferrite oore loop (7»

new verie is WJIT-1480. A f t e r 19 years of on-and-rff BOB D X , I havs 1,484 veriee from

lunch with visiting NROer MARK STRICKEHT. I now own a Panasonic R F - 0 1 5 " M r . Thin" pock-

sensitivity and selectivity to appeal to a DXer (especially at the p r i c e ) . I u s e it for
non-DX reasons. Ite beet catch le 0:oX-112O. 7 3 .

For those who m a y be wondering, I'm alive, w e l l , & buey,w.ith little
DXing to epeak of f o r m o n t h s . I hope this situation w i l l change soon. Intro: 3*, I
w o r k in the engineering labs of Bsndix (Avionics D i v . ) in Fort Lauderdale, where'they
make and sell LSCA's, h i . I've been DXing for 22 yeare now, specializing in domestics
(Cuba, etc.) I've logged 110 plus-or-minus countries, 44 states, all ten provinces, but
still no Gothab or Falkland I s . I speak Spanish & Portuguese, but definitely not Franco-
Canadian, h i . I use a Collins R-38B/UHR w / a n HQ-190 standby. Antenna ie a degraded
LSCA-2 without the "sense" input; everything nulls in the eame direction in a eteel-f rare
apartment, y'know. DX: CBQ-800 it definitely o n the air & feeding LPRT'e in Western
Ontario; I juet got back from a vacation in Qukbec 4 Ontario. On tha Northern Route of
tha TCH at the Cochrane/Thunder Bay district line the strongest daytimer ie WMAQ-670,
then CBQ-BOO. One must be within hiking distance of the LPRT'• to pick tham u p decently.
In Northern Ontario they transmit from short towers strategically located on a h i l l , e t c .
4 fed by m i c r o w a v e . Plenty of "rleeaux" in Quibsc made DXing easy there, but enough of
Canadian family life, eh? A t two weeks before the Convention I still don't know if I'll
make i t , but I'll sure try. Thanks, CHUCK HUTTON, for taking over m y Cuban H i t . I'll
have to make another trip to the Keys if I c a n . Visits recently from GLENN HAUSES and
rfSAR OBjic, shorter than I wished then to b e , busy ae I a t . By the w a y , after the TXM

degree separation of s t a t i o n s ) . I'm doing w h a t I oan, time permitting, to resolve the
