And once again, good evening to you! (I assume, like m e , you receive your copy of

DX NEWS when you arrive safely home after dark on a Monday evening.)(Even with the

    Greetings, A I hope everyone i s having a Happy few Season. I had a nice time i n Atlanta and got some information for the NRC Log on the t r i p so I reported i t to AN Switch and JOHN CJHARKAN. Thanks to John for a log well done. How anyone can't fin d info for the log i s beyond me. I can't even DX for 3 0 minutes without hearing something for the log. RAX ARRUDA guessed that VHLO-640 had a null for KFI but i t doesn't. I t has a null for C F X - 6 3 O only (according to their CM) A i s kidney-shaped with good coverage of most of Ohio. I n the verie department only one new one received here since l a s t mention, that being K X U - 1 5 9 0 Rolla, Mo. We f i n a l l y caught our f i r s t CPC of the season, so here comes our f i r s t Muse of the season. I caught a few portions of the WSH-1240 Montpelier, Vt. TEST on 1 0 / 3 0 . I didn't P I C K U P 4 3 0 much, but had definite reception at 12:14am, 12:51, 12 : 5 4 , 1 : 0 7 A 1:10am s/ of f , a most welcome TEST as this i s only the f i f t h Vermont station on our logs. Dumb-type question - during the sked 10/23 TEST by KIUP - 930 - too had the wild tone sweeps from 2 a.m. through 4:10 toen we f i n a l l y gave up? Sounded l i k e a squeaky windshield wiper - or my stom-ach trying to give me a message. ( I t was KIUP, Thomesl -ERC) Sure sorry we missed the At-lanta Convention, we gonna catch up with you yet. Combination of small family problems i n Minnesota A i l l health made i t impossible, so l t ' s see you i n ST. LOUIS. Nothing else r e a l l y to report receptionwise, as I've had a very H i l here of l a t e , but i t seans to be clearing up. I think we might have a noisy street l i g h t up the street. We do have a wild piece of tape that we are cheeking out, soon as we get a cassette recorder going again we w i l l t ry and make up a tape and l e t one of the NRC experts cneox i t out. I noted WHO on a i r past normal clos-ing time 10/29 . They were doing rebroadcast of Iowa-Purdue FB game - Iowa s t i l l ost. Thqy f i n a l l y signed off © 1 :37an. 1:41 brought us toat sure sounds l i k e American Forces Radio i n Washington, or some such, but we are s t i l l checking. We had a Colombian station the rest of the evening but we were unable to ID. No mention of Bogota heard, but we check further and ask for help. This tape i s almost as wild as a cassette I have from Bonaire a couple years ago saluting one of NBC's very own. I never mentioned i t as I am sure th i s person i s quite modest. Besides, he just moved to the States, and i s s t i l l running around saying "Aloha". More l a t e r . C U L.

    GETS INTERESTING VERIE FROM KRVS-880 WILLIAM R. HALE - 1451-B Faith Drive - KantoiiL, I l l i n o i s - b1b66 10/30/78

    I want to start with a couple of veries which I thought might prove int e r -esting to some. F i r s t , on 10/15 I picked up WKAQ-790 for a few minutes toile i n the car. I sent than a report the next day, and THREE ( 3 ) days l a t e r I got a v e r i f i c a t i o n back. Now, that's service. Not only a verie, but a nighttime pattern contour of WEAQ, toowing how they have to protect W3EM. And i f that wasn't enough, also included was a copy of the 790 page from the 1972 NRC Pattern Book. There i s a statement at the bottom stating the page was re-printed by permission of NRC. But the Boonton, N.J. address was l i s t e d as the Club address. Shouldn't someone straighten than out? toth such a great response to my report, hopefully they verify everyone's that well. Here's one I ' l l submit for strangest verie honorable men-tion: On Jan. 8 , 1976, I heard KRVN-880. I sent off a report 4 after months 4 months, I forgot a l l about i t . Then on Apr. 8, 1978, I got a l e t t e r I n a Holiday Inn envelope from 1he Inn at Greenville, S.C. 4 postmarked St. Louis, Mo. Enclosed was a Xeroxed verie of my re-port toich began, "Know a l l men by these presents", and was signed by R. J . Bitner, WbSOK, 4 witnessed by de Fish, DX correspondent. Pretty strange, I'd say. GARY ATKINS straightened i t a l l out for me, but for a toile I was i n a quandiy about the whole thing. This afternoon proved very productive as f a r as DX was concerned, a l l times ELT: 5:17pm, WGNT-930 Huntington W.Va. 6 : 2 8 , KMPL-1520 Sikeston, Mo. 6 : 3 0 , KDMA-1520 as KMFL lowered power 4 went to night-time pattern. 6 : 4 5 , W00A-1370 Pensacola ( I haven't heard thai since I was i n E l a . i n ' 7 5 ) . 6 : 4 9 , KXOL-1360 F t . The 930, 13&>. 1370, 1060 4 1590 catches were f i r s t timers at t h i s location. Let's get those updated GY records i n . I read with interest JAMES E. CRUCHETT's Muse i n issue #2 that he heard KELI, Mountain Home, Ida. as I worked for them 1966-1971 toile stationed at Mountain Home AFB. WVNA's s t i l l punching throu^i. They had CBS NI on the hour folo by anrauncanent they'll have Larry King on © 12:06am. I'd l i k e to start a programming-personalities type col-umn. I f HQ can f i n d room periodically, formats 4 personalities' names from l o c a l pspers might prove interesting, 4 toen a name i s heard, a quick reference might make the difference toen trying to p i l l a station out of the muck. Any suggestions? Maybe more i n my next Muse. 7 3 .

And the l a t e s t station heard for the f i r s t time i s KPRS ( j r i n e v i l l e , Redmond, Bend) with Ai Radio NX © 9 , ID 8 9:06 4 9 : 1 0 . I expect to take off again tomorrow for a few days i n the Yreka-Medford, Ore. area. I used to l i v e i n Yreka; a good DX area. I s t i l l l i k e to t r a v e l . I had a "Cruise Control" put on the Pinto; i t certainly gives my right foot much rest on freeways 4 nearty l e v e l stretches on the other roads. A HET OF EUROPEAN' ,DX - FROM EUROPE I CHARLES HAFTER - House 2 , 0 0 0 - 3« Route de Laverune, Entree B - 34100 Kontpelier, France

    Now that we are settled i n , and down to a normal routine, here i n Southern France, I have time to write a Muse. Some random comments on European DX: 1) Although sta-tions are 9idlz apart, the signals are much cleaner than those i n the U.S. My RF-2200 easily serarates every channel, even those 800kw monsters, with l i t t l e or no splatter. 2 ) The RF-2200 works great on MW, much better than the TRF! S p l i t frequency reception i s a problem; the only One received so f a r i s Iraq - 7 6 0 , between Switzerland-769 and Romania-755- Without a radio capable of nulling reception i s impossible - Vatican Radio on 1529 i s the only clear channel I receive. AL1 the other channels are f i l l e d with three or four super powers fight-ing i t out. But with a directional antenna the stations can be separated. 3 ) Montpdier i s an excellent DX location on the Meditteranean Sea. Daytime DX y i d d s eight countries -Franee, Spain ( 7 3 7 ) , I t a l y (Rome-845), Andorra (Sud Radio-8l8), Monaco-1466, Vatican -1529, Tunisia (Tunis - 6 2 9 ) 4 Algeria (598 4 5 2 9 ) . 9 ) - Most European stations s/off a f t e r 1 or 2am l o c a l time. Each nation, except for West Germany, uses only one or two channds for their AN service, i . e . Notturno dd I t a l i a on 845-Ror.e 4 899, Milan. Thus DX i s interesting every night not Just MMs. For example, after Sud Radio-818 s/offs, Kypt comes i n . I hope to be able to receive TA's from the U.S. i n thnter. 5 ) - My favorite types of music, d a s s i c a l and jazz get big play on the Eastern European stations - Bulgaria "Horizon Program" on 1223 after 2200 GMT (contrary to WRTH), Romania (Q.oj-1151) and Hungaiy (Budapest-539) a l l transmit a great selection of d a s s i c a l pieces. I better stop now, though I have bardy begun to com-ment on DX1 I w i l l report on a l l frequency changes I notice, although the obly station I have heard mentioning new frequencies i s BBC, Radio 4 (toich w i l l go to Long Wave on 200 kHz) 4 Radio 2 toich w i l l move to MW and be AN, increasing chances i n the U.S. I t should get i n -teresting i n Novanber. A l l oonmunications wdcorae. Au Revoir. (Are you located there permanently. Chariest Thanks for Musing from France! -ERC)

    WE HEREWITH WXCONE LARRI TO THE NRC 4 MUSINGS. MUSE OFTER. LARRYt LARHI WILD - RR 1 , Box 135 - Murphysboro, I l l i n o i s - 62955

    Sines t h i s i s my f i r s t Muse, I guess a bri e f introduction i s i n order. (Or, at le a s t , that's toat most people seen to say). I'm j6 years old, and I'm a college prof too has taken a year's leave to go back to school. I'm currently enrolled at SIU i n Carbondale. I l i v e with my wife, two children, parents-in-law and two brothers-in-law on a 92 acre plot of land S of Murphysboro. As a high school student, I did a l i t t l e DXing, but soon l o s t i n -terest. About four years ago I hooked a 9 0 ' piece of wire to the AM antenna screw on the rear of my AM-fM-Hi-Fl Stereo receiver 4 discovered a whole nother wotld. That night I not only heard the standard 50kw d e a r s ; PJB i n Bonaire (at that time I thought CKLW owned 800 kc;) 4 a toole host of toat I would soon discover were Cuban pests; but also a 50kw from the Repub-l i c of Colombia on 8 2 0 . And that w/90" of wire lying on the ground. Just think of toat I could pick up i f I could just get the antenna up i n the a i r . That RX has been re t i r e d back to i t s original function: to provide the family with high quality stereo sound reproduction. I now do oy DXing 4 l i s t e n i n g both SW 4 BCB, on an FRG-7- The unit was modified by G i l f e r to provide better s e l e c t i v i t y . For antennas I have used that 90' wire at about a 16' elevation; several un-tuned loops, 4 a low ( 3 - 9 feet above ground) LW ( l i k e J00'). Last year, toile I was teaching i n Pa., we came to Murphysboro to v i s i t Grandma 4 Gramps during the Christmas va-cation. I brought along the FRG-7. I took a 4 5 0 ' e l e c t r i c fence, grounded the f a r end through a 500 ohm re s i s t e r , brought the near end into the house; and turned the fence into a mini-Beverage. During that two weeks, spending about an hour to tra at the d i a l s , I logged 115 stations, "y best DX were several low power Mexican stations (the fence runs SW) which I logged on Sunday night. The fence i s s t i l l being used as a fence, so I'm forced to use 2 0 0 ' of hook-up wire toich I've run through the woods. But come the f i r s t snow, the fence w i l l once again be mine. I see I am just about out of l i n e s . A couple of questions. Where i s the a i r beacon RAB (1610 approximately) located? (Guatemala -ERC) toat i s the Spanish sta-tion around 530 ko/s.? More to come.

    I hope I'm not being redundant i n my fascination with SSS DX. Since my new hours of work afforded me the opportunity I have logged 20 nevies i n the period 10/23 to 1 0 / 3 1 . I sent out 33 reports i n October, the most ever i n one month for me. Recent veries include: WUPE-1! 10, M1NC-890, KATZ-1600, WBRW-1170, WTNS-1150, WQTW-1570. to bring me to 5 8 5 . Since I haven't DXed SSS since the mid-sixties I anticipate l i t e r a l l y hundreds of new receptions and possibly veries. I t gets the old adrenalin flowing again. Today (11/1) I strung up toat I thou^it would be «n 8 0 0 ' beveridge but i t turned out to be a 600' LW toich I terminated on the fa r end anyhow. I t ' s pointed SW from here so we'll see i f i t ' s any help. Being that I'm only 5 - 7 miles from v i r t u a l l y a l l the N.T.C. 50kw-ers the wire may pick up a l o t of spurs, a problem I haven't encountered with the NRC FET Loop. Let me go DX this afternoon and I ' l l get back with the f i r s t LW t e s t . . . . * L l I got were spurs of W0R on about 70 frequencies! I guess I ' l l have to toorten i t up. 3's.
