Thank you to our amazing teachers.Student success at school is very dependent on the support of parent so as a profession the teachers in our schools thank you for your ongoing support and recognition of your children’s work. Many of our students only have an opportunity to be part of today because of the teachers who make it possible. On behalf of the Science Teachers Association of Tasmania and the students and parents here today, thank you to the following teachers who go above and beyond the requirements of their schools and systems to support your children and provide them with opportunities beyond the classroom.

Thank you to our Tasmanian Science Talent Search Judges.Every year members of STAT council contribute to the success of the Tasmanian Science Talent Search by taking on a judging task. To continue the long tradition of professionalism and integrity teachers who have students entered in the TSTS have no part in judging those sections. STAT also invites judges with expertise beyond that of the STAT council to ensure that, not only is the high standard of the process upheld but specialist knowledge is accessed when required. Indeed – it is not unusual for the student’s to be much greater experts than the official judging panel. In 2016 we need to thank the following members of STAT Council, STAT membership and UTAS for their continued support.
From UTAS – Dr Dave Wood, Jeannie-Marie LeRoi and Bruce Duncan. From STAT Council – Rosemary Anderson, Ann Burke, John Bardenhagen, Jill Reade, Denise Devitt, Darrin Timms, Jenny Dudgeon and Sonya MatthewsSTAT Members – Heather Omant, Tony Powe, Michael van der Ploeg and Ian Pattie
Tasmanian Science Talent Search – 2016Special Awards
Congratulations to all our winnersBHP Billiton Science and Engineering AwardsThe Tasmanian Science Talent Search is the pathway which enables students, with exemplary work in Engineering and Research, to enter in the BHP Billiton Science and Engineering Awards. This is a most prestigious event and just to be invited to attend is a marked recognition of student achievement. In recent past Tasmanian students and teachers have performed well at the national level. Indeed, in 2016 Tasmania had 5 of the 26 finalists in the Secondary Division and 2 of these became the national winners, representing Australia at the Intel Science Fair in the United States of America. We have also had two of our teachers win the national award which is great representation for our state and for STAT.
This year we can congratulate 38 Students who have been invited to submit their work in either Engineering or Research. In Engineering, there were 7 primary and 3 secondary entries and in Research Investigations there are 8 primary and 20 secondary entries. The celebration of successful entries will take place early in 2017 and we congratulate all our students for making to the national level. Of course, we wish them well.
