KANYE WEST – BOUND2Kanye West’s album name had a lot of people gos-siping, but it wasn’t until he released the video of song Bound2 that really got people worked up! The song it-self is (we think) amaz-ing! A really good con-cept about being in love and finding it (awww!). Here at Status, we love the video even more! WILKINSON - AFTERGLOWThis song really is a feel good song. As soon as you hear it you in-stantly want to get up, get dressed and go on a night out! The video is just as good. It ex-plores 2 people’s 5 year relationship and it re-ally does tell a great story. Status LOVE it!Song: 8/10Video: 9/10

Style: Its personal, but we love to share it!

Style is something that is important to every individual. It’s per-sonal, but at the mo-ment within the fash-ion industry, the new ‘in’ thing is sharing that style. Now we all love to be individual and have the feeling of ‘I got it first’, but why is it that when we purchase these new gar-ments the first thing we want to do is show it off? There’s an easy and quick way to do this now and it’s become a craze seen in younger fashion fanatics. How? Through blogs and other means of social networking. Blog-ging has become the new phenomenon within the fashion world, everyday young (and old!) fash-ion fanatics post their ideas and outfits for everyone to see. Al-though blogs can be, for some, a past time and used simply as a hob-by it can be a start to something special, using blogging sensation Su-sie Bubble as an exam-ple. There has been such a craze at the moment with blogging that there have been many compe-titions and opportuni-ties with magazines and high street stores, it has become – a survival of the fittest between bloggers everywhere. It’s not just fashion being blogged about ei-ther; all over the In-

ternet there are make-up tutorials, beauty prod-uct reviews and hair extension reviews.

Social media has made it ridiculously easy for people within the fash-ion the industry to com-municate with each other through tools like Twit-ter, Facebook and You-Tube. Facebook has been around for years, and although it’s quite per-sonal bloggers are able to make pages relating to their blogs so that audiences can like them. As well as that, friends that they already have on Facebook can see their blog and interact with them through that. YouTube is more viral. This is where ‘vlog-gers’ (video bloggers) are able to shine. Vid-eo bloggers are able to share the same ideas and views as ordinary blog-gers but through a cam-era. Most ‘vloggers’, record themselves doing make-up tutorials, show-ing their audience what they bought and where they can buy fabulous things too!

If YouTube and Facebook wasn’t enough, Twit-ter has captivated so many individuals and the craze doesn’t look like it’s ending any time soon! Twitter is a social networking site where you can update a

short status about what you’re up to, or ba-sically, whatever you want! The point is to gain followers, and also follow those who inter-est you. Bloggers Twit-ter pages enables their fans/audience a more personal insight into their lives, you get to know the blogger a lot better by being able to see what they are up to every minute of the day!

Visual aids are used too. Instagram is new amazing app, created in order for people to post images of what they want, gain followers and follow others too. On Instagram you’re able to add filters to your images, in affect edit-ing the image making it lighter, darker, over-all, better. Bloggers, and a lot of other peo-ple within the fashion industry use Instagram to post images of their outfits, things they have recently bought and it’s another way for fans to keep in touch and get a deeper look into the bloggers life. In a way it has a simi-lar concept to Pinter-est, which again is im-age based. Pictures are posted, they can be re-pinned, shared to oth-ers, liked etc.

The question that’s on everyone’s lips is,

will it ever end? Has it changed the fashion in-dustry? Well, I’m here with answers to both of those questions. No and yes. The fashion world is ever changing. It’s one of the most common industries known for evolving and adapting to new things going on around us. It’s so fast paced; there is always something new happen-ing. Media and all oth-er social networking sites have made it easi-er for important people to be recognised. There are even websites such as Independent Fashion Bloggers, which actual-ly allows bloggers from all over the world come together, share blog links, interact with other bloggers and give bloggers the opportuni-ty to advertise their blog. Bloggers are actu-ally recognised as very important people within the fashion industry and some may argue that they are even competing with fashion journalists.

Fashion blogging may be seen as a hobby or a past time, but it can seriously take you plac-es if you are passionate and really just enjoy what you do. As a fash-ion blogger myself, I would say it’s amazing what blogging in your spare time can do! Read-ing other blogs, inter-

acting with others with the same interests as you, participating in competitions and some-times if you are lucky, being approached by ma-jor companies/writers that would like to col-laborate with you. Blog-ging can be that step-ping stone for you to get to some major plac-es, it’s fun and it’s a great hobby but can open some big opportu-nities for you. Some of

the most famous editors and writes of magazines in the moment right now started from blogging.

Here are some tips and tricks that I think will be useful for anyone de-ciding to start up a new blog:

- Have a clear out-look on what you want to blog about, what are you passionate about? What do you love doing? Fash-ion, music, football? Once you have your main topic that you want to blog about everything else will fall into place and you will be-gin to have a following of people that will read your blog posts.- In order for me to write good blog posts, I keep up to date with fashion news and think about what my audi-

ence would like to read about. My reader has to be engaged, there’s no point writing something that will be seen as pointless or boring. If you know who your au-dience is it will make writing much easier – but don’t lose sight of what you want to write about, at the end of the day it is your blog af-ter all!- Try to connect your blog to your other so-cial networking sites such as Twitter, Face-book, and YouTube (if you have these, and if you don’t, make pro-files! Twitter is proba-bly the most popular)- Try and get your blog out there. Wherev-er you can leave your blog link for people to browse, but careful not to spam – no one likes a spammer!- Get involved with every competition going! It doesn’t matter if you don’t win, as long as your blog gets recog-nition that’s all that counts.- Keep up to date with all fashion news. Subscribe to anything and everything you can!- Don’t be discour-aged if your blog posts doesn’t always get com-ments. Most readers don’t usually like com-menting on blog posts, especially if no one else has commented.

Style: Its personal, but we love to share it!

- Be persistent. If possible, post every-day, or at least once a week. If you have a regular fan base, this may change if your posts become less frequent. But in saying that, if your posts aren’t com-plete quality, then don’t post at all.. No one likes anything medi-ocre, right?- Be up to date with the language and abbre-viation used within the blogging world. OOTD – Outfit of the day, OOTN – Outfit of the night etc.- Always keep it fresh, clean and be YOU! Readers want to read your interesting posts and want to know what you have recently pur-chased, but they also want to get to know you. Don’t be too formal, keep it friendly and you’ll realise the fol-lowers will come rushing in!- Add Widgets to your blog, promote everything you have!- Make friends and connections within the industry. Realistically, it’s not always about what you know, it’s WHO you know. But don’t forget you’re involved within a very competi-tive industry and others are fighting for your spot too.

Don’t forget that STATUS magazine love when you guys send in your pictures and we won’t feel any differ-ent about you sending in the links to your blog. If you spend your time customizing or making your own clothes why not show case it online for others to see? If you’re worried about the traf-fic you think you blog will receive, worry no more! Send your links into us and we’ll add them into our next is-sue.

Now I know you’re prob-ably thinking you don’t know where to start? Well here are some blogs that I think are very inspirational and are yet to grow into some-thing amazing. Visit these to get you start-ed, and for a great read!

labellavitahearts.blog-spot.com (fashion and beauty blog) – By Rami Cocowww.fashiionadore.com (fashion/personal style blog) – By Jennifer tabokamyaesthetic.blog-spot.co.uk (fashion/per-sonal style blog) – By Taboka M

All these bloggers are young females from Lon-don and are also full time students at univer-sity, so it just goes to show that it can be done!

It doesn’t look like blogging is coming to end anytime soon, and quite frankly I don’t think it ever will. It can lead to places, blogging is evolution-ary. Don’t forget to visit my blog: fab-ama.blogspot.com Fabiola Pimpong

AYISHAT AKANBI

INTERVIEW

What is a typical day of work like for you?Never typical! my days at work can vary so much. I can spend one day in a basement ware-house at minus degrees with no reception or contact with the outside world, or be trawling suitcases up and down Oxford Street.

How did you get into the job you are in now?‘A beautiful accident’ I like to call it. I was just in the right place at the right time with the right ideas and the right determination.

What do you like most about your job?Every day being differ-

ent, knowing that at any time an email notifi-cation on my blackber-ry could mean a brand new client, a magazine mention, or a work trip abroad! I am always kept on my toes as I work within an industry that is forever changing, improving, downsizing, expanding – that’s what we’d want from any ca-reer we had.

What did you study in university/ college? I studied Media and Cultural studies.

What advice would you give to someone inter-ested in your career in styling? You want it? Go get it!

Anything worth having isn’t easy and I have learned that in many ways since I started just over a two years ago. There are many people that look so far when it comes to starting out in styl-ing, I say, do it like I did and look amongst your friends, most peo-ple have a friend that sings, raps, acts- find someone with a talent you have faith in, com-mit to their image, be persistent and patient, and you never know he/she could be the next Labrinth!

RECLAIM BAGS

INTERVIEW

How did you come up with the name Reclaim Bags? Reclaim was chosen as it went well with the fact that the rubber inner tubes are all recycled. To reclaim, reuse, recy-cle.What experience/edu-cation did you need to start up your own business? Whilst I was studying at Universi-ty the topics we cov-ered were quite broad, so that gave me a well rounded set of skills, including design, manu-facturing, marketing and promotion. What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out? If you really believe in yourself and your idea then it will work, just try not to take things too personally.

When did you first be-come aware that this was the direction that you wanted to go in? The first Reclaim collection was my final collection coming out of Universi-ty. I got great feedback from that and saw poten-tial in the idea itself. That encouraged me to pursue it further.

What challenges did you

have to overcome to get to where you are to-day? I think the biggest challenge is staying motivated when things don’t seem to be going to plan. It can be a lot of pressure. Someone once told me to ‘view every failure as being one step closer to suc-cess’ I think that is a great way to look at it.

Where would you like you brand to be in five years time? The next step for Reclaim is to focus more on wholesal-ing to shops and bou-tiques. I would also like to expand into products for men, which should be happening next year, and also homeware.

Who or what inspires you? A big inspiration at the moment is a com-pany called Elvis and Kresse, who make beauti-ful bags out of recycled fire hose. I really love what they do.

RECLAIM BAGS are cur-rently trading at Spit-alfields Market in Lon-don every Friday and Saturday at the Style Market you can also check them out at re-claim.co.uk/

The brand that was born in 2011 by British based designer, Sophie Postma whilst studying Fashion and Innovation at Leeds college of Art. The concept behind the brand is to produce a sustainable range of handbags and accessories that will change people’s perceptions of recycled products and test the limits of re-use.

Urban is defined in many ways from an urban area characterised by a high population density and can also be associated with race, class, gender and sexuality. Urban style is found in urban subcultures of graffiti, dance, and music. Urban culture can be any group of people whose beliefs, values, styles and attitudes differ from that of the prevailing culture. The relationship between youth, style and musical taste is highlighted by subcultures.

URBAN LIFESTYLE

A subculture is a so-cial group within a na-tional culture that has distinctive patterns, behaviour and beliefs. This differentiates them from the larger culture to which they belong. If a subculture opposes a dominant culture, it is described as a counter culture. A lot of urban style and culture came out of Brixton, in South West London. Southwyck House estate, one of the many estates in Brixton was designed by a young Pol-ish architect in the 1980s. Musician Alex Paterson from The Orb lived there from 1983-1986 and Damian Hirst also lived there. A front page spread in The Guardian in 1995 said that John Major (Prime minister) de-scribed it as” grey sullen wastelands, rob-bing people of ambition and self respect”. It was reported as being one Britain’s ugliest council estates and was known as a ghetto and a crime ridden estate. It was created to accommo-date ideal living for people but it turned out to be an urban eyesore. By 1982, the problems had started, such as muggings, drugs, car theft and burglaries.

The blocks looked like an uninviting place and gained a fearful reputa-tion. It was built in a horseshoe shaped struc-ture and appears like a fortress with tiny tur-ret windows. Another of the many estates is The Stockwell Park estate. In the 1960s the local authority was given the go ahead to build the estate. It was built to accommodate newcomers to the country - who were living in overcrowded accommodation. By 1989 Stockwell park estate was one of the top ten estates who were likely to riot and burn. The flats were rife with insects and rodents. Police were regarded as trouble, burglary had a huge hold. Social workers always came in two’s. People felt like they were living in a ghetto. The urban riots took place in Brixton in 1981, Lord Scarman was reported as saying “es-sentially an outburst of anger and resentment by young people against the police”.The Brixton riots took place as a result of the sub-standard hous-ing, high unemployment, a high robbery rate and dislike of the police.Going back to the 1920’s, before the sec-ond world war, a lot of actors lived in Brixton as the late night trams ran from the West End.

This then gave Brixton its bohemian reputation. The street names in Brixton have been popu-larised in song and in past history. Names such as Coldharbour Lane, Electric Avenue, Acre Lane, and Railton Road. Electric Avenue was the first street in London to be lit by Electrici-ty and is in the Eddie Grant song ‘We are going to rock right down to Electric Avenue”.Brixton has many eccen-tric wonderful charac-ters, from the people that preach that’ the end is nigh’ to the peo-ple that have the free-dom to dress in garish outrageous clothing and know that they are ac-cepted. There are also many famous people who were born or started out in Brixton, such as Sha-ron Osborne, John Major, David Bowie and many others. It has seen the arrival of individual eateries in the Brixton arcades. Its nightlife includes the O2 academy, The Fridge, The Ritzy cin-ema, as well as comedy clubs and theatres.Gentrification in Brix-ton is hard to gauge as a new phase of devel-opment arises. This is bringing in shops such as All Saints, Gap and Starbucks. It is sug-gested that landlords would then start to raise the rents and it

would force out peo-ple who want to start their own businesses on a market stall who could not afford the risks of opening a shop. Brixton market caters for the local immigrant commu-nities and is a base for local people. Many people think that this would put an end to the Brixton that is loved by its community and will go in the direction of Greenwich and Portobello markets.Brixton today is one of the most ethnically di-verse areas of London. It is an exciting and vibrant place to live in and to visit. It at-tracts people from all walks. of life.I am proud to say that I was born in Brixton as it has made me appreci-ate people’s culture, to see the bigger pic-ture of life and to have been part of the wonder-ful community spirit of Brixton. Brixton today has become what it is because of the journey that it has gone through, the jour-ney of the past hardship of the people, of the coming together of peo-ple from different coun-tries, their traditions and culture. Amongst all the economic difficul-ties, it has still re-tained its character and charm. .
