For the first time since President Kennedy’s 1962 ordered closing of the American Embassy in Havana, Americans can now fly into Havana legally, without having to do it surreptitiously. JetBlue now flies several trips directly to Cuba each week. A number of other U.S. carri-ers are expected to offer service to

the island nation by year’s end.Last December President

Obama announced an end to a fifty-plus year diplomatic standoff between the two countries and a restart of diplomatic relations. It may have shocked some, but from his first day in office, the administration has been working quietly on thawing out this governmental deep-freeze.

His announcement was tied to the release of an American pris-oner. In July, the President took things a step further by announc-ing the reopening of the American Embassy in Havana. “The progress that we mark today is yet another demonstration that we don’t have to be imprisoned by the past,” said the President. On August 14th, the

U.S. flag once again flew in Cuba.Not surprisingly, the

President’s move was not univer-sally hailed, not even in his own party. New Jersey Democratic Senator Bob Menendez, a Cuban-American, condemned it as

“shameful.” Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio, another

don Mares’ biggest challengeWhen Don Mares welcomed

guests into his office at Mental Health America of Colorado, they would see a photograph of his brother, Fred, on his desk. Fred is a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist who has experienced debilitating anxiety disorder and severe depres-sion. Don kept the picture there to remind people that almost every Colorado family is affected by men-tal illness and in order to help the

afflicted, we must remove societal stigma by sharing per-sonal stories.

Prior to becoming CEO of Mental Health America of Colorado (MHAC), a post he held until January of this year, Mares struggled with how to help his brother who is liv-ing out of state. According to Laura Cordes, Vice President of External Affairs and Chief Operating Officer at MHAC,

“When Don’s brother needed help, an affiliate in Missouri connected them with resources. This attempt at navigating the system gave Don firsthand experience with how difficult the issue can be and helped him call public attention to mental health.”

As the City of Denver’s new Director of the Department of Human Services, Mares faces what he calls, “The biggest pro-fessional challenge I have ever had.” Given all the positions he has held in a distinguished public service career, that’s saying something. It is both a personal and professional endeavor for Mares to use his new position to continue the conversation on

mental health and integrating mental health issues into other public policy debate including homelessness and substance abuse. “As Don would say,” according to Cordes, “there is no health without mental health.”

At the end of last year, Mares was appointed Executive Director of a newly created Office of Behavioral Strategies, serving as the lead on the city’s behavioral health efforts. After the Denver Mayor’s election of 2015, Mares was appointed to head the Department of Human Services, and he took the Office of Behavioral Strategies with him, mov-ing it from the Department of Safety. With all his duties combined, Mares is responsible for most social services in Denver including children’s and family affairs, homeless-ness, public health, crime prevention and substance abuse. His office handles both direct services as well as public policy created to support these issues.

“Our department is doing so many things well that people don’t know about. Our challenge is making sure people know the things we are doing right while continuing to improve all our systems,” said Mares.

Besides the needs of his brother Fred, it seems Don is also driven by the legacy of his community-minded mother, Priscilla, who died in 1995. Priscilla and her siblings were deeply involved in the always difficult north Denver political scene and she served the Democratic Party in neighborhood leadership positions, supported northside candidates, and spent time as the Executive Secretary of the Latin American Education Foundation.

As a Denver native, Mares was steeped in north Denver politics but also high quality education. He is a graduate of

Regis High School and Stanford University, and earned a law degree from Penn. Mares began his elected service as a state legislator in 1989-1995 and later served as the Executive Director of the Department of Labor and Employment under Gov. Bill Ritter.

Mares remains the only Latino ever elected Auditor in the City and County of Denver. He was first elected in 1995 and re-elected in 1999, the first Auditor to be elected to suc-cessive terms in almost 25 years. He is credited with bring-ing the department into the digital age with an interactive web site and the dissemination of information never before so available to the Denver public.

The Auditor’s seat allowed Mares to assemble a well-known and well-funded political machine that built upon his previous electoral service. In 2003 he was second in voting in a crowded general election for Denver Mayor, winning just over 22 percent of the vote. He lost in the runoff to busi-nessman John Hickenlooper to fill the Denver mayor’s seat.

Even with such a storied career, it seems Mares is just getting started with some of his most important work. For sharing his family’s story of mental health issues, for his willingness to integrate mental health with other public policy issues, and for helping to remove the stigma associ-ated with mental health challenges, our community should not only be cheering him on, but participating in the con-versation.

World’s largest aerial firefighting tanker

Global SuperTanker Services, LLC, who recently announced their project to build the world’s largest aerial firefighting tanker on a 747-400 platform, also announced plans to make Colorado Springs the operating base for the SuperTanker.

Family: In La Voz, (August 12, 2015 edition) in a Where Are They Now? feature on Dr. Priscilla Falcon, La Voz reported that her husband, Richard Falcon was killed in a car accident on his way to a La Raza Unida Conference in El Paso. To set the record straight, Ricardo Falcón was killed by Perry Brunson, a gas station operator and a member of the American Independent Party. An argument ensued over water requested by Falcon for an overheated radiator, Brunson fired four shots, two of them hitting Ricard Falcon, who later died. Brunson was tried for man-slaughter and a jury later acquitted him. La Voz regrets the error in printing this misinformation.

ISIS killed 32 people in Turkey last month and have attacked Turkish troops.

Both Menendez and Rubio believe that no negotiations or change in U.S.-Cuban policy should even be discussed until the Castro brothers, former Cuban President, Fidel, and current President, Raul, are gone. her photographer/documentarian father, Ray, spent a week there in July. “I’m not sure what I expected to see or experience in Cuba,” said the Apple executive. “My hope was to experi-ence and learn about the people and culture.” The reality actually exceeded her hopes. “I found people who are resilient, welcoming and hardworking and who have kept music and family at the core of everything.”

The LeJeunes’ and so many Americans now wanting to visit Havana did not have to take a circuitous route to the island. Nor did they have to fit into one of the U.S. Treasury’s 12 authorized categories for travel which include family visits, religious and athletic trips and more.

In earlier times, Americans wishing to visit Cuba, used Canada, a Caribbean nation or Mexico to launch their trip. Arriving in Cuba, they paid a small fee and got a spe-

cial pass instead of having their passports stamped. But those days are over.

Retired Aurora teacher, Karen Kellogg Fain, has been to Cuba twice. She once taught at Guantanamo Bay, the military base the U.S. has leased since 1903 and now uses as a detention center for terror suspects. As a teacher, she was prohibited from leaving the compound. But in 2011, she returned as part of a tour group and saw Havana up close.

“It’s everything you’ve ever read about,” she said. That means a trip almost back in time. Just as one imagines, the ‘new-est’ cars on Havana’s streets are vintage American: ’55 Buick Specials, ’56 Chevy Bel Aires’, a smattering of the classic ’57 Chevys’, Studebakers, Ramblers and more.

“It’s just amazing that they keep these car running,” said Kellogg-Fain. But, it’s also a testament to the resilience of the Cuban people. “None of these cars has origi-nal parts. They’ve just innovated to keep

them running.”Many business leaders and politicians,

including Democratic Presidential candi-date, Hillary Clinton, would like to see the American embargo, ‘el bloqueo,’ as it’s called by Cubans, lifted. President Kennedy banned all American exports to Cuba in 1962. Medicine and medical supplies are exempt from the embargo. It also bars most Cuban products from import here, as well.

But despite the embargo, there are still a number of U.S. products allowed under exceptions outlined by the government. The state of Georgia, for example, has an exemp-tion that allows it to ship more than $50 million worth of chicken to Cuba each year. Colorado is also looking for a piece of the pie.

the road from Birther to Birthright themesI spent last weekend on busi-

ness in Milwaukee, Wis. and had the opportunity to also attend Mexican Fiesta, a showcase of diversity and organizational strength of a very committed Latino community and its leadership. The venue that accommo-dated the thousands in attendance and the international entertainment programs offered are a model of excellence worthy of emulation.

Among the many dignitaries that attended the opening of the activities

was United States Senator Tammy Baldwin who took the time in her remarks to express her opposition to Donald Trump’s attack on the 14th Amendment to the Constitution that makes citizenship a birthright. Trump’s opinion in this regard is of course related to his immigration agenda that has helped him raise his profile and popularity among his followers.

Also, recently I ran across the comments of Jack Cashill who does a conspiracy theory website called WND that has publicly questioned the eligibility of Ted Cruz, Bobby Jindal,

Rick Santorum and Marco Rubio to run for president as he argues that they are not “natural born citizens.” While this sounds crazy, we should not forget that the Birther in Chief that questioned President Obama’s birthright in the last national election was none other than Donald Trump who promised but never delivered the proof to disqualify Obama.

Fast forward to the current election season and we see the other side of the Birther intent as the anti-birthright crowd led by Trump would deny automatic citizenship to American children born to Latino immigrant parents because according to them these immigrants come to the United States just to have their children in American. But to go as far as to advocate a change in the Constitution to deal with Latino immigrants (something that was not done to shape European immigration especially in the first part of the 20th century) appears to be a desperate move to appeal to the baser instincts of those Americans that would sacrifice that sacred document to help maintain political power.

Although the “Anchor Baby” insult to the Latino com-munity had its day some time ago and was discredited, it is being brought to the forefront again to tantalize a shrinking majority some of whose members see the denial of citizen-ship to Latinos as a way to stem changes down the line at the

ballot box that determine the face of democracy in America. Rather than embrace the nation as an effective and genu-inely diverse community, those that would “take the country back” under the rubric established by a Trump utopian vision will find that they are being sold a bill of goods.

This fellow is a great salesman that has built a fortune from government subsidies, borrowed money that he did not pay back and repeated company bankruptcies at a cost of 4.7 billion to fellow investors. Now he also is selling other things such as a wall along our southern border to be paid by Mexico as well as oil revenues from new military adventures in Iraq.

There is somewhat of an irony in focusing the rhetoric on Mexican immigration given the fact that China is the number one exporter of immigrants to this country followed by India. Someone needs to ask Trump about the kind of bar-rier we should put up to stop Chinese and Indian immigrants and how he can get those countries to pay for it.

Donald Trump as a Birther was something of a joke. But now as an anti-Constitution advocate he has turned into a genuine threat to America.

Wisconsin y tuve la oportunidad de asistir a la Fiesta Mexicana, una demostración de la diversidad y la fortaleza organizacional de una comunidad latina muy comprometida y su directiva. Entre los muchos dignatarios que asistieron a la aper-tura de las actividades fue la senadora de los Estados Unidos Tammy Baldwin quien se tomó el tiempo de expresar en sus notas la oposicion al ataque de Donald Trump a la Enmienda 14 de la Constitución que hace la ciudadanía un derecho al nacer. La opinión de Trump en este caso está por supuesto relacionada a su agenda inmigratoria que ha ayudado a elevar su perfil y popularidad entre sus seguidores.

latinos inmigrantes porque según ellos esos inmigrantes vini-eron a los Estados Unidos para tener sus hijos en América. Pero ir tan lejos como para abogar un cambio en la Constitución para golpear a los inmigrantes latinos (algo que no se ha hecho para

Guerrero finally comes into focus

Guerrero finalmente aparece en el enfoqueDocumental narra la vida y trabajo de un fotógrafo no muy reconocido

Hay mucho que decir acerca del fotógrafo Pedro E. Guerrero. Sin embargo se ha dicho muy poco.

Al hablar de la fotografía nombres como Mario Testino (Vogue, Vanity Fair), Steve McCury (National Geographic) y Annie Leibovitz (Rolling Stone) son unos cuantos de los individuos más reconocidos. Sin embargo, ellos nunca tuvi-eron la oportunidad de dar a conocer el arte de Frank Lloyd Wright, Alexander Calder y Louise Nevelson.

Pedro E. Guerrero tuvo esa oportunidad y ahora el origi-nario de Mesa, Arizona va a ver su historia contada en las series de PBS’s American Masters y VOCES de Latino Public Broadcasting.

“Trabajé para Vogue, trabajé para Harper’s Bazaar, tra-bajé para Good Housekeeping y casi toda revista que existían en ese tiempo”, dijo Guerrero en un documental que describe su carrera que se desarrolló durante el mundo de Madmen en los años de 1950 y 60. “Y fue algo glorioso, sin mucho esfuerzo en realidad”.

Nacido el 4 de septiembre de 1917, Guerrero vivió hasta los 95 antes de pasar a la otra vida el 13 de septiembre del 2012. El dejó atrás un legado extraordinario que se muestra en “American Masters – Pedro E. Guerrero: A Photographer’s Journey” y la narración de directores de películas Raymond Telles e Yvan Iturriaga.

En el momento en que se grabó la entrevista en el 2010, Guerrero tenía 92 años. Sin embargo, según dicen los direc-tores, él era tan fluido en su hablar como cualquier persona de la mitad de su edad.

“Quedé sorprendido sobre lo lúcido que una persona de 92 años puede ser, que fue algo que me sorprendió”, dijo Iturriaga. “Pedro podía pasar horas contando historias. Él era siempre directo e ingenioso”.

Al crecer en escuelas de “Mexican only” en Arizona, Guerrero conocía muy bien la segregación o la injusticia social – algo que se manifestaría en la última parte de su carrera – pero él no dejó tampoco que esas injusticias lo pusieran abajo.

Después de prestar servicio en el extranjero en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Guerrero se mudó a la ciudad de Nueva York y se convirtió en uno de los fotógrafos arquitec-tónicos más buscados de su era.

“Una de las cosas que también me sorprendió en este proceso fue saber de la gente que Pedro fotografió”, dijo Iturriaga, “Frank Lloyd Wright, Alexander Calder y Louise Nevelson y cómo ellos se relacionaban en un nivel distinto que como lo hizo Frank Lloyd Wright en esa comunidad. Las

historias detrás de las historias y detrás de estos caracteres tan grandes es lo que realmente me sorprendió y me hizo más curioso acerca de su carrera”.

Con respecto al trabajo de Guerrero, los cineastas esco-gieron mostrar fotos que no se habían visto antes, las tomas que no llegaron al final, con el fin de documentar el difícil proceso de conseguir la toma más perfecta.

“Nosotros tuvimos miles de fotos con que trabajar”, dijo Iturriaga. “Muchas fotografías que no han sido vistas, trasparencias, negativos, toda clase de material que nunca han sido vistos más de una vez. Al pasar por todas estas fotografías nosotros pudimos sacar historias y caracteres y un proceso que es muy difícil que ven la mayoría de los fotógrafos y caracteres y un proceso que es realmente difícil de ver en el trabajo de la mayoría de los fotógrafos”.

Aun cuando la foto perfecta es lo que separaría a Guerrero, Iturriaga agregó que perdido en esa foto perfecta, para ser vista, se encuentra el proceso.

“Pedro nos dijo, ‘Yo nunca mostraría todas las otras tomas, escogía una y esa es la que la mayoría de la gente vería’”, dijo Iturriaga. “Hay algo hermoso en eso, pero uno pierde ese proceso y como uno trabaja para conseguir algo”.

Documentary will narrate the life and works of under-appreciated photographerJoshua PilkinGton

There is a lot to say about photographer Pedro E. Guerrero. Yet little has been said.

When discussing photography names such as Mario Testino (Vogue, Vanity Fair), Steve McCury (National Geographic) and Annie Leibovitz (Rolling Stone) are a few of the more talked-about individuals. They, however, never had the opportunity to chronicle the artistry of Frank Lloyd Wright, Alexander Calder and Louise Nevelson.

Pedro E. Guerrero did have that opportunity and now the Mesa, Arizona native will have his story told on the PBS’s American Masters series and Latino Public Broadcasting’s VOCES series.

“I worked for Vogue, I worked for Harper’s Bazaar, I worked for Good Housekeeping almost every magazine that existed at the time,” Guerrero said in the documentary describing his career that took shape during the Madmen world of the 1950s and 60s. “And it was glorious, without really much effort.”

Born on September 5, 1917, Guerrero lived to be 95 before passing away on September 13, 2012. He left behind an extraor-dinary legacy that is depicted through “American Masters – Pedro E. Guerrero: A Photographer’s Journey” and the narrative lens directors Raymond Telles and Yvan Iturriaga.

“Interviewing Pedro was, to me, one of the funnest times we had making this film or making any film that I can remember,” said Telles in an interview promoting the documentary. “Because we were able to sit down with him at his home and just listen to him tell stories.”

At the time the interview was recorded in 2010, Guerrero was 92-years-old. According to the directors, however, he was as fluid in speaking as someone half his age.

“It was surprising how lucid a 92-year-old could be, that was definitely something that surprised me,” Iturriaga said.

“Pedro could go for hours telling you stories. He was always sharp and witty.”

Growing up in “Mexican only” schools in Arizona, Guerrero was not a stranger to segregation or social injus-tice – something that would manifest itself in the latter part of his career – but he also did not allow those injustices to keep him down.

After serving overseas in World War II, Guerrero moved to New York City and became one of the most sought after

architectural photographers of his era. “One of the things that also surprised me throughout

this whole process was learning about the people that Pedro photographed,” Iturriaga said, “Frank Lloyd Wright, Alexander Calder and Louise Nevelson and how they related on a different level than maybe Frank Lloyd Wright did with other people at the fellowship. The stories behind the stories and behind these big characters is what really surprised me also and made me even more curious about their work.”

As for Guerrero’s work, the filmmakers chose to show-case photos that haven’t been seen before, the takes that didn’t make the cut, in order to document the strenuous process of getting the perfect shot.

“We had thousands of photographs to work with,” Iturriaga said. “Many that have been published, but many unseen photographs, slides, negatives, all sorts of mate-rial that had never been looked at more than once. Going through all of these photographs we were able to pull out stories and characters and a process that is really hard to see in most photographers’ work.”

Though the perfect shot is what would set Guerrero apart, Iturriaga added that lost in that perfect shot, for the view, is the process.

“Pedro would tell us, ‘I would never show all the other takes, I pick one and that is the one people are going to see,’” Iturriaga said. “There is some beauty to that, but you lose his process and how you work towards achieving something.”

“American Masters – Pedro E. Guerrero: A Photographer’s Journey” will air on Friday, September 18 at 9 p.m. on Rocky Mountain PBS during National Hispanic Heritage month. The film is also available on DVD at ShopPBS.org or calling 800-PLAY-PBS.

ProfileScott Martinez didn’t always know he wanted to

be an attorney. He thought his calling in life was to be an engineer. Born and raised with a younger sister, Martinez grew up in Lakewood. After high school he graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Later, Martinez interned for Congressman Diana DeGette in Washington, then returned to Denver. He worked with Colorado’s Democratic Party, then left Denver in 2003 for San Diego to pursue a J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law. Upon his return to Denver, Martinez joined the law firm of Holland & Hart. Two years prior to the appointment of Denver’s lead attorney, Martinez served as the mayor-appointed Deputy City Attorney. Martinez is active with the Colorado Hispanic Bar Association and was awarded the Latino Lawyer of the Year in 2014 from the National Hispanic Bar Association. Martinez is also active as a mentor with Si Se Puede, a program initiated by Judge Christine Arguello for young Latinos in pursuit of a law degree. Martinez has been married to wife Julie for 12 years and they have two boys, Levi, 8 and Miles, 6. Martinez’ free time is spent with Julie and their boys. Martinez adds,

“We go camping and hiking. We have also taken our boys to New York City.”About Denver City Attorney’s Office

Appointed in January 2014, Martinez thorough-ly enjoys being the lead legal eagle for the City of Denver. He believes his work serves as the civil rights attorney for the city of Denver. “I have the best job in Colorado,” Martinez offers. Martinez enjoys the com-bination of law, policy and politics in finding solutions.

High School ExperienceMartinez was an above average student, and

loved school. Martinez chose academics over sports, and excelled accordingly. He was also engaged in various school clubs. “My love for school, I’m sure, came from my parents.” Both parents acquired a master’s degree when Martinez was in junior high.

Martinez remembers both parents as giving and vol-unteering individuals who help build a solid foundation for him and his sister and taught them to pay it forward.

Message to Youth“I mentor a lot of stu-

dents and I tell them that it’s normal to have self-doubt. When you are young, you don’t know that you are not the only one with struggles. For instance, I thought I was going to be an engineer. I felt like that was what I was sup-posed to do, but I didn’t love it. It’s really ok to not know what you want to be when you grow up.”

The Last Word“I kept a journal when I was in 5th grade. I

went off to camp and entered this into my journal: “I really want to be a civil rights attorney.” I met a friend whose dad was a civil rights attorney and that’s what I wanted to be. I want to help people. I believe my job is to be the civil rights attorney for the city. I want to know that people are treated fairly. Also, know that being in public service brings out the best in you. And an added note: “I call my parents every single day.”

Creo que mi trabajo es ser un abogado de los derechos civiles para la ciudad. Quiero saber que la gente esté siendo tratada apropiadamente. No es de sorprender, el Presidente no fue universalmente aclamado, ni siquiera en su propio partido. El senador demócrata de New Jersey Bob Menéndez, un cubano-americano, condenó eso como “vergonzoso”. El senador republicano de Florida Marco Rubio, otro cuba-no-americano que representa la población más grande cubano-americana, llamó a la puesta de la bandera en la embajada “un poco más de propaganda para el régimen de Castro”.

Ambos, Menéndez y Rubio creen que ninguna negociación o cambio de la política U.S.-Cuban debería ser discutida mientras que los hermanos Castro, el antiguo presi-dente cubano Fidel, y el presidente actual Raul, hayan desaparecido. Ellos dicen que los Castro han oprimido simplemente los derechos humanos en Cuba desde cuando se apoderaron del poder cerca de seis décadas.

Pero el senador demócrata de Colorado Michael Bennet cree que ha llegado el momento de hacer frente a una realidad.

“Una mejor relación U.S.-Cuba tiene ben-eficios potenciales para los negocios de Colorado al abrirles nuevos mercados para explorar y nuevas oportunidades de exportar productos y servicios”, dijo él. “Nosotros apoyamos la restauración de relaciones con Cuba”, agregó el senador.

La residente de Denver Jessie LeJeune y su padre fotógrafo escritor, Ray, pasaron una semana allí en julio. “No estoy segura de lo que esperaba ver o experimentar en Cuba”, dijo la ejecutiva de Apple. “Mi esper-anza era la de experimentar y aprender de la gente y la cultura”. La realidad sobrepasó en realidad sus esperanzas. “Yo encontré gente

que son resistentes, acogedores y buenos trabajadores y que han mantenido la música y la familia en el núcleo de todo”.

Los LeJeunes y tantos americanos que qui-eren visitar a la Habana no tuvieron que hacer un viaje tortuoso para ir a la isla. Tampoco tuvi-eron que ajustarse a una de las 12 categorías autorizada por la Tesoreria de los Estados Unidos para viajar que incluyen visitas famili-ares, viajes religiosos y deportivos y más.

En tiempos pasados, los america-nos que querían visitar a Cuba, usaban a Canadá, una nación caribeña o México paras hacer su viaje. Al llegar a Cuba, ellos pagaban una cuota pequeña para el permiso y obtenían en lugar de eso un pase especial en lugar de un pasaporte estampado. Pero esos días han terminado.

La maestra retirada de Aurora, Karen Kellogg Fain, ha estado en Cuba dos veces. Ella enseñó en la bahía de Guantánamo, la base militar que los EE.UU., ha arrendado desde 1903 y ahora usa como centro de deten-ción para sospechosos del terrorismo. Como maestra, le fue prohibido salir del complejo. Pero en el 2011, ella volvió como parte de un grupo turístico y vió la Habana de cerca.

“Es todo de lo que uno ha leído”, dijo ella. Eso significa un viaje de volver atrás en el tiempo. Así como uno se lo imagina, los carros ‘más nuevos’ en las calles de la Habana son reliquias para el americano: ’55 Buick Specials,

’56 Chevy Bel Aires’, una cantidad de los clási-cos ’57 Chevys’, Studebakers, Ramblers y más.

“Es simplemente increíble que tengan esos carros todavía andando”, dijo Kellogg-Fain. Pero, tambien es un testimonio a la capacidad de resistencia del pueblo cubano.

“Ninguno de esos carros tienen partes origi-nales. Ellos han simplemente inventado algo para que sigan funcionando”.

Northern Feed y Larry Lande de Bean quiere vender frijoles pintos a Cuba. Colorado produce ahora la séptima cosecha más grande del país de frijoles, que se siem-bra en el Condado de Weld. A los rancheros del estado también les gustaría comenzar a exportar carne y cerdo a Cuba.

Pero qué hace a Cuba un destino para los turistas americanos es también lo que los preocupa acerca de lo que se puede perder cuando se eliminan todas las restric-ciones de viaje y termina el embargo: su ‘viejo encanto mundial del ayer’.

Y aun cuando el elemento de la nostalgia lo hace especial a los americanos, lo mismo no se puede decir para los que llaman a la isla su casa. El internet es un ejemplo per-fecto. Ningún cubano va a echar de menos la car-estía de la comida con la que viven. Tarde o temprano, la mayoría cree que lo viejo dará paso a lo nuevo. La mayoría también esperan que el progreso no deje cicatrices.

La Vieja Habana, Plaza Viejo, Plaza de Armas y el Malecón, un amplio malecón que proporciona una de las vistas más bellas de la isla del océano, y que son inolvidables. Existe la preocupación de que un gran flujo de turistas americanos y compañías puedan cambiar las cosas. Pero de alguna manera, los cambios ya han comenzado.

Cuba está invirtiendo bastante en el dilapidado Puerto de la Habana. Está gastan-do todo lo necesario para dar cabida a que lleguen las cargas de productos americanos que estarán llegando pronto. Hasta ahora y en este año, más de 150 americanos han hecho el viaje a Cuba, un aumento de más del 50 por ciento del año anterior. Pero otros cerca de tres millones de visitantes, la mayoría de Canadá y Europa Occidental, también vienen de vacaciones.

Se calcula que cuando se abran por completo los viajes, más de 10 – millones de americanos tocaran suelo cubano cada año. Ellos dejaran mucho dinero comprando de todo desde Cohíbas y cigarros Monte Cristo hasta ron cubano.

En muchas maneras, esta nueva era puede traer lo mejor que ha sucedido a Cuba y los cubanos en más de medio siglo. O, quizás no. Pero será un cambio; la única cosa que es constante.

and located in El Paso County. The expansion of La Voz Bilingüe newspaper into the city will prove to be a strategic move. The City of Colorado Springs reported a total popula-tion of 445,830 of which there were over 70,875 Hispanics living in the city in 2014. As for the total population of El Paso County, it was estimated to be 622,261 in 2014 with over 97,572 Hispanics residents. El Paso County had a total of 40,823 Spanish Speakers living in the County.

Colorado Springs was originally called the Fountain Colony. In 1859 the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush brought people into the region and in 1871 Colorado Springs was founded by General William Jackson Palmer. The 1891 gold strike in Cripple Creek started a gold rush that had a huge impact on the city of Colorado Springs.

Colorado Springs was nicknamed “Little London” because of the high number of visitors from England. The first railroad was built in 1885 and called the Colorado Midland Railroad. The city was noted for being the junctions for seven railways and making it a thriving transportation center.

The population is 76.8 percent White, 6.3 percent Black, 1.0 percent Native American and 16.1 percent are Hispanic.

There were total of 167,788 households in the city. The medi-an income for a household was $53,962, while the median income for family was $68,836. The census documented that 13.7 percent of the population were below poverty.

Colorado Springs had a total of 196,816 employed work-ers, with 78,862 that are in management and business, with 36,861 in the services occupations, 48,730 in sales, 15,596 in natural resources and construction, with 16,767 in produc-tion and transportation. Gold mining was the historical eco-nomic driving force in Colorado Springs along with tourism. Tourism in the Pikes Peak region accounted for over 13,000 jobs and 5 million visitors that leave $1.35 billion in revenue.

Today the defense industry plays an instrumental role in Colorado Springs’ economy. These industries include General Dynamics, Lockheed Northorp Grumman Boeing Martin and the Space Foundation.

Military bases in Colorado Springs dominate the employ-ment numbers with Fort Carson employing 10.20 percent of the people working in Colorado Springs. Peterson Air Force Base employees 4.11 percent, Schriever Air Force Base at 2.86 percent, the Air Force Academy at 2.29 percent. The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), Higher education facilities, the school districts and the city and county government dominate the rest of the employer

is that it is home to the United States Olympic Training Center and the headquarters for the United States Olympic Committee. Broncos surpass texansAgain, it’s only the Pre-Season

but Bronco fans are excited about what they’ve seen these past two weeks. Denver hasn’t won their games by a lot of points nor have they completely shut down the likes of the Seahawks and Texans, but they have shown glimpses of football brilliance coming from veterans all the way down to the rookies.

In Denver’s win over the Texans last week they managed to get 121

yards rushing from Ronnie Hillman, Juwan Thompson and C.J. Anderson, all while Denver Quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Brock Osweiler passed for a combined 173 yards. Catching those passes were 11 recipients all of which combined for 262 yards and 2 touchdowns with Denver’s longest coming from a 57-yard pass and an easy trot into the end zone with the connect from Osweiler to Andre Caldwell.

Denver’s defense had an even bigger game with 5 sacks

and 53 tackles. It’s no secret that former Denver head coach and now defensive mastermind Wade Phillips is not afraid to show opposing quarterbacks why Denver has one of, if not the best sack tandems in the league and with the acquisition of Shane Ray league quarterbacks will definitely be grunting when facing the Broncos.

Up next on the preseason schedule are the San Francisco 49ers who have had a pretty stout defense them-selves, but have struggled offensively since their run at the Championship in 2012. Denver will then head to Phoenix to face the Cardinals in their last preseason game before hosting the Baltimore Ravens September 17th at Sports Authority at Mile High for their first regular season game.

In Major League Baseball, the Colorado Rockies were swept by the New York Mets last week, and continue to struggle in all areas. Their fan base barely continues their team loyalty.

But what makes Cuba a destination for American tour-ists is also what makes them worry about what might be lost once all travel restrictions are lifted and the embargo ends: its ‘yesteryear, old world charm.’

And while the nostalgic element makes it special to Americans, the same might not hold true for those who call the island home. The internet is a perfect example. Right now, it is tightly controlled by the government, there is lim-ited bandwidth and, unlike what Americans take for granted, it’s heavily censored. Of course, no Cuban is going to miss the food shortages they routinely live with. Sooner or later, most believe that the old will give way to the new. Most also hope that progress will not leave a scar.

Old Havana, Plaza Viejo, Plaza de Armas and the Malecón, a broad promenade that provides one of the island’s most breathtaking views of the ocean, are timeless. There’s concern that a flood of American tourists and com-panies might change things. But in some ways, change has

already begun. Cuba is investing heavily in its dilapidated Havana port. It

is spending whatever necessary to accommodate arriving pay-loads of American goods that will soon be coming. Yachting excursions out of Miami are landing in Havana on a daily basis. The beginning of the end may have already started.

So far this year, more than 150,000 Americans have made the trip to Cuba, an increase of more than 50 percent from the previous year. But another nearly three million visitors, most from Canada and Western Europe, also came on vacation.

It is estimated that when full travel opens, more than 10-million Americans will touch ground in Cuba each year. They will leave plenty of money, buying everything from Cohibas and Monte Cristo cigars to Cuban rum.

In many ways, this new era may usher in the best thing that has happened to Cuba and Cubans in more than a half century. Or, it may not. But, it is change; the only thing that is constant.

Donald Trump como Birther fue en realidad un chiste. Pero ahora como anti-Constitucionalista se ha convertido en una genuina amenaza para América.
