For many years as cow/calf outfits continued tooperate, next year was always going to be better.Unprecedented prices in the cattle business starting inthe spring of 2014 right through to the fall run in allclasses of livestock has been a very rewarding turnaround. The excitement throughout the business fromcow/calf to backgrounder to finisher is certainly verygratifying to see and be part of.

The continued development of every cow herd as wemove forward has many exciting selection and decisionsto be made. Our main focus of selection still has toremain with the cowherd to raise a top end product withthe basics of fertility, maternal traits and structuralsoundness.

Not every ranch uses the same selection criteriawhen selecting their next herd bulls but raising the bestpossible end product under their ranch conditionscertainly is.

As you look through the bulls on offer, there are cer-tainly identifiable traits similar among the bulls. Eyeappeal, length of body, ability to move out and travelwell, good hair coats and having a strong maternal baseare what we strive for in this offering.

For a number of years we have included a “Did you Know...?” page in our Bull Sale Catalogue. the idea was tohelp spread the word that our beef industry is a vital part of the economy. It is also environmentally friendlyand sustainable. It seems the entire ag community is under fire more and more from special interest groupsthat like to spread false info and propaganda.

the following ten “Fast Facts” are both interesting and educational. www.beefadvocacy.ca is a websitedeveloped by Canada Beef to help proponents of our industry deal with questions or situations that mayarise both friendly and not so friendly. We think it is worth checking out.

1. Canada is the third largest exporter of grain fed beef, behind the USa and australia.

2. 1950’s feed efficiency was 10:1; today it’s 6:1.

3. In 2015 international demand for Canadian beef is projected to be above 2003 levels for the first time.

4. the beef industry contributes almost $25 billion to the Canadian economy annually as the 3rd highestgDP industry behind first place petroleum and second place automotive.

5. Scientifically, grass fed beef appears to be leaner than grain finished beef by 2 - 4 grams per 100g oftrimmed meat. this difference is quite small in the context of total fat consumption for a day ofapproximately 60g.

6. Feedlot production costs would be 8% higher if producers chose not to (or were unable to) useimplants, ionophores or beta-agonists. to produce the same amount of Canadian beef without the useof growth promotants would require 12% more cattle, 10% more land, 15% more feed and 4% morewater. It would also require 7% more fuel and fertilizer.

7. Every Canadian consumed an average of 44 pounds of beef last year.

8. annual Canadian steer carcass weight has increased an average of 7 pounds per year since 1975 to anaverage of 860 pounds for 2014.

9. 45% of Canada’s cattle producers are over 55 years old.

10. a 550 pound steer in alberta averaged $275/cwt in November 2014, up $670 per head from theyear before.
