Safe Space Challenge

Here's our step-by-step guide:

1 Build an awesome fort (think blankets, cushions, duvets!)

2 Take a snap of your fort & share on social media with the hashtag #safespacechallenge

3 Nominate your friends & family to take on the challenge in their own homes

4 Donate £3 to Barnardo's by texting SAFE to 70570, and ask your nominees to do the same!

What will your fort look like?

Look up in the sky! Is it a bird? Is it a plane?

It’s a Stay at Home Hero – they’re changing the world from the safety of their own homes!

The Coronavirus crisis is having a profound effect on the mental health of children and families already living in poverty. Many families are struggling to find money to provide even basic necessities; and young people living alone after leaving care do not have the support networks they need to see them through.

This is resulting in acute anxiety. Many children rely on the face to face activities and counselling Barnardo’s provides. Already living with mental health issues, they are finding their problems compounded by this pandemic.

But with the country in isolation, face to face meetings are no longer possible. So we’re providing smart phones and tablets, data and phone credit so they can keep in touch; and mental health packages which provide families with much needed advice, as well as toys and activities for children who have very little to keep them active and distracted.

Coronavirus is pushing vulnerable children and families to the edge. It’s putting them under unimaginable emotional and financial pressures. They need Barnardo’s more than ever.

How YOU can become a HeroBarnardo’s project workers are working as hard as they can to keep on supporting the children who need them the most. However, they are on a quest for some faithful sidekicks, to help them on their vital mission.

By taking part in the fun-filled fundraising activities throughout this pack, you can become a Stay at Home Hero and help us make a difference to the lives of vulnerable children, at the time when they need us the most.

All you need is a sprinkle of enthusiasm, a dash of creativity, and a passion for fun – we’ll provide the rest!

£10 could provide craft equipment for a child to make a calm box, helping them manage their emotions.

£25 could help pay for a week’s food and vital phone credits for a young person living alone.

£50 could help to fund 1-2-1 virtual counselling session.

£100 could help provide a smart phone for a family so they can stay connected with Barnardo’s care workers in this unsettling time.

Barbers for Barnardo’s

Is every day a “bad hair day” in lockdown? Are you beginning to embrace the “caveman” look?

Well why not be brave and give yourself a new hairdo, and then donate the cost of your normal trip to the hairdressers/barbers to Barnardo’s. Or you can ask your friends and family to sponsor you to go for a full-shave, or even a crazy shade of green! Whatever you choose, set up a JustGiving page so your family and friends can support your lockdown makeover.

If you think you can get away with not showing anyone the results because you’re self isolating – think again!

We want to see your ‘before’ and after photos with by using the hashtag #barbersforbarnardos, and don’t’ forget to challenge friends, families and colleagues to do the same!

Many children already living with mental health issues are finding their problems compounded by the Coronavirus pandemic. Strains on mental health include feeling anxious, lonely and unsafe at home. Parents/carers may also feel anxious about not being able to support their children making it difficult for them to care for their child’s wellbeing.

Your support can help us remotely counsel and support children through this crisis as well as providing personalised packs containing items to help them cope with this unprecedented crisis.

Michaela, one of our project workers, said:

“We support many children with mental health issues, and now their families have no money, food or electricity. It’s having a huge impact on the emotional health and wellbeing of these children who are already traumatised by their experiences of abuse and trauma.”

Isolation Inspiration

We’re sure you have lots of your own ideas in ways you can raise vital funds for Barnardo’s while in isolation and we’d love to hear them. Please be careful to adhere to the social distancing advice sent by the Government.

1. Big ToddleBig Toddle is Barnardo’s yearly sponsored walk, where flocks and packs of little fundraisers toddle any distance, to raise money to help transform the lives of the UK’s most vulnerable children. Organising a Big Toddle Home Safari and bringing the roar-some fun to your home is easy-peasy.

You could:

• Sponsor your little ones to toddle around the garden, competing to achieve a record number laps!

• Hold an animal-themed scavenger hunt• Challenge your little ones to walk a set distance in the style

of various animals – and sponsor their roar-some efforts!

2. Ultimate Family Quiz It’s time to channel your inner Richard Osmond or Sandi Toksvig, and host your own Ultimate Family Quiz!

You can re-create your favourite TV Quiz show, or even make up your own. Make it a challenge, and get everyone to donate £1 for each incorrect answer. If you’re missing your weekly pub-quiz fix, then why not organize a virtual one with family and friends – set up a video-call, and charge an entry fee to donate to Barnardo’s.

3. Bop for Barnardo’sListening to music is a great way to for us all to unwind during isolation, with more opportunity that ever to dance like no one’s watching!

Why not pay tribute to your favourite artist by recreating your favourite music video and challenging friends and family to a dance-off? Get the “audience” to sponsor your dance-battle, and bop ‘til you drop!

Daily Good Deeds

What have YOU done today to make you feel proud?

1. Daily spend donationHopefully we’ve inspired you to give yourself a fresh new haircut, and donate the cost of your haircut to Barnardo’s. However, there might be many other ways that you’re making small savings. Missing your morning coffee, evenings at the pub or dinners at a restaurant? Are you enjoying those commute-free mornings, and wondering how you can put your savings to good use? Every little helps, so consider donating your isolation savings to Barnardo’s today.

2. Barnardo’s Big BakeAre you missing your favourite tea-time treat from that bakery round the corner? Well we don’t want you to have to miss out so why not follow the link to help you bake your very own baked goodies. Donate the amount you would usually spend on your sugar fix. Your gift today could help provide food and food vouchers so children and families can maintain good health during their time in isolation.

3. Upcycled Fashion ShowGetting dressed just to hang out in your living room is a real look right now. Why not raid your wardrobe and see if you can upcycle any of your clothes? Add buttons, chop sleeves off and even stitch items together. Then donate the amount you would have spent on getting your bit of retail therapy.

Story from a fellow fundraiser

During these unprecedented and challenging times, our volunteers continue to inspire us with their tremendous fundraising efforts. One of these inspiring individuals is Jamie, who is running 10k every day for 21 days of lockdown to raise vital funds for Barnardo’s work.

Jamie has been volunteering at Barnardo’s Portlethen Shop since September 2019. “Volunteering at Barnardos has helped me to improve my confidence interacting with all types of people and I am enjoying making a difference towards a great cause.

Since the shop has had to temporarily close due to the Coronavirus pandemic, and is therefore unable to receive donations and raise money, I thought it would be a great idea to set up my own fundraiser to try to help out. I wanted to do something that I was good at, which happens to be running, to help vulnerable young people and their families who are affected by Coronavirus.

I also felt the need to focus on something positive, which would help to create a structure in my

day during the lockdown period, whilst also doing something to help less fortunate people. I have therefore decided to run 10km per day for the 21 days of lockdown around the Aberdeen area starting on 25th March. I set up a Barnardo’s fundraiser page on Facebook and upload my daily progress.”
