On our second or third visit to a city, we want to find something a little more personal. To find a fantastic restaurant, discover a niche museum or relaxing coffee shop; something that gives us a connection and makes us feel like an insider. We’ll wander down a street simply because of its architecture, browse through a quirky shop or be willing to sample new cuisine. We want to explore.
But what happens to that enthusiasm when we come home? For most of us that passion for exploration diminishes and we return to our set routines, habits and traditional favorite places. Big Bus Miami encourages you to keep that enthusiasm for exploration!
Miami, our home city, has global appeal. We receive hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, all keen to explore. With our hop-on hop-off sightseeing tour, Big Bus Miami is able to help visitors discover our city, fulfilling not just the ‘must do’ visit to South Beach and Ocean
Drive, but also taking visitors to places such as the Bass Museum, Botanical Gardens, Vizcaya, Barnacle State Park, Coral Gables, Little Havana plus many more.
As these visitors travel across MacArthur Causeway, wind through Downtown or meander through Coral Gables they learn about the city from our guides; local experts who are happy to share their knowledge on Miami’s history and tell the fascinating 100 year story of how Miami developed into the dynamic metropolis we see today. The experience is enhanced by the elevation of the double-decker, open top buses, providing perfect views of Miami’s many landmarks. It is a perspective that enables everyone to see Miami with fresh eyes.
Miami and the Desire to ExploreWhen visiting a new city for the first time, we’ll often go out
and see the places and landmarks that make that city famous.
We’ll probably have a tick-list of the things we want to see
and do. In New York it’ll be the Statue of Liberty or the view
from the Empire State Building, in Washington, D.C. it’s a walk
along the National Mall and the grand Memorials. For visitors
to Miami a visit to South Beach and Ocean Drive is often that
‘must do’ activity.

As a Life & Career Coach, I work with my clients to achieve a healthy work life balance. Fortunately many of my clients work and live in beautiful South Florida. This location allows us to treat our weekends as mini stay-cations. A time to head to the beach, stick our toes in the sand, and feel the warm ocean air as we release all the stresses of our work week. This is also the time we daydream of the life we wish to have.
So what prevents us from achieving the life we dream of? In my experience, it is often limiting beliefs. These are thoughts which constrain us in some way and are programmed into our subconscious at a very young age. According to Dr. Bruce
Lipton, PhD, cellular biologist and author of “The Biology of Belief”, most of our beliefs are in place by the time we are 5 or 6 years of age, and some of our “core” beliefs, things like whether or not we think the world is a friendly place, can be “programmed”
while we’re still in the womb. Our beliefs come from interactions with our parents and the people around us during childhood, our religion, community, or any traumatic event. We don’t usually
consciously choose what beliefs to hold. We soak them up from our life experiences when we’re too small to have any way of evaluating them, and they become core components of how we see ourselves, other people, and the world.

Tell us about your background and what brought you to Miami.
I was a small-town boy who grew up in Iowa, and after spending seven years in Omaha, NE, which is significantly larger than my hometown, I decided that I had enough of the snow and wanted to move to warm weather. I started in the hospitality industry in Omaha in reservations and worked my way up through the ranks until I moved to Miami in 1996 and went into sales, which is the perfect fit for me.
The theme for this quarter’s publication is Stay-cations. What are the offerings at
Kimpton’s Surfcomber that would contribute to locals having a great experience in their own backyard?
The Kimpton brand is one of the best brands at creating added value to the guest experience. Hotel guests and locals alike are often exposed to the fabric of Miami, and the concierge team gives them the scoop on not-to-be-missed SoBe hotspots, many of them in the hotel’s backyard. Right on property, guests can partake in a bevy of activities including yoga, beach volleyball, paddle boarding, bike tours and more. Surfcomber even offers discounts for Florida residents looking for a sunny South Florida Stay-cation.
Tell us about how you would spend a Stay-cation in Miami.
I would choose a boutique, beach hotel that’s within walking distance to restaurants, shopping and nightlife – ironically, probably Surfcomber, which is why I feel so happy to be to a part of such a great property and great brand. My ideal Stay-cation day in the life? Enjoy breakfast on the patio at the hotel and spend the day at the pool and beach while reading my nook or just soaking up the sun. Then explore Miami
with a city tour, biking tour, walking the beach or enjoying a volleyball game. After a day of activity, relax during dinner at Surfcomber’s Social Club – the jerk chicken sandwich is my favorite!
You have both public & private sector job
experience. How have you been able to leverage your contacts to grow your business?
It all really comes down to the relationships you build with people, being personable and treating each person with respect. I take my genuine, mid-west personality and add a bit of Miami spice, which people seem to relate to. The secret is not just building a relationship, it’s maintaining relationships that really matters – this is something I really enjoy and I believe I excel at.
Kimpton has long been supporters of the LGBT community. What makes MDGLCC worthy of your support?
Kimpton has been a supporter of the LGBT community for over 30 years. We’ve assisted community organizations with not only monetary donations, but service and product donations as well. We stand behind the LGBT community and any organization that promotes and generates awareness to an initiative led by equality. We are proud of our LGBT employees – Kimpton was the very first hotel company to score 100% on the HRC Corporate Equality index. We will continue to lend our support for these organizations that work to better the community that we call home.

Although Miami will always be a sensual “sun and fun” playground, the gay and lesbian scene has evolved way beyond circuit parties – offering more urbane options for locals and those looking for more than just casual diversions.
Greater Miami and the Beaches’ gay universe is undoubtedly sexy and sassy, when you explore everything it has to offer. True, we were named “Best Beach to See and Be Seen” in GayCities.com’s 2010 Best Gay Beach Cities survey, and ranked among About.com’s World’s Best Gay Urban Beach Destinations in 2012, but we offer more than premium eye-candy.
The social scene here is highly integrated, rather than segregated in terms of gay versus straight hotels and clubs – although you can find those oases if you like. A great place to make your plans is the new LGBT Visitor Center in South Beach
(1130 Washington Ave.), one of the first in the country, operated and funded by the MDGLCC Foundation, Inc.,
the non-profit arm of the Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. Designed to specifically meet an LGBT’s traveler’s needs, and sponsored
by MetLife, the visitor center is a one-stop destination for information, publications, wireless internet access, LGBT curious and weekly community events. The LGBT Visitor Center can also assist with any last minute needs such as hotel and excursion reservations, dining and attraction recommendations. The Chamber offers a unique Pink Flamingo Certification for businesses which guarantee a welcoming space for LGBT travelers. Another great resource for inspiration is GoGayMiami.com, featuring a great community calendar listing all events happening in the area.

South Floridians should think seriously about staying in this area for a vacation instead of going off to another city. There are so many attractions that one can visit in South Florida without even getting on a plane, in addition to rich cultural and architectural history for the more intellectual types. Take Vizcaya Museum and
Gardens as an example; this estate was modeled after an old Italian country villa. From my perspective as an interior designer, this is a must see. It is so rich in history and art.
A GOOD CHALLENGE Miami has so much to see and do...

As a community chamber (versus a civic chamber), we encourage both our gay and gay-friendly
family to support those who support us. One of the benefits of membership in MDGLCC is the knowledge that a $6 billion local LGBT market searches our roster of members first when making purchase decisions about goods and services. With
