Summer is a great time to kick off ‘Stay Sharp’, our inaugural uniform industry publication. Stay Sharp is a seasonal magazine, with informative content written by experts in the field. It is specifically designed to showcase interesting news, tips, latest fabrics and designs for readers who understand that a distinctively dressed workforce is vital to the success of their organisation.

We plan to bring you a wide-ranging selection of articles, and welcome your feedback and questions. I hope you enjoy our polo feature – as soon as the sun comes out, there is a surge in demand for the cool and comfortable polo. Some companies offer them alongside conventional button-up shirts, or use them as a ‘Casual Friday’ uniform – a bit more relaxed but still maintaining the team look of their staff.

SCrubSThe increasing popularity of scrubs is apparently almost entirely due to the influence of American TV shows such as; ER, Scrubs and Greys Anatomy which all feature doctors and nurses wearing Scrubs. Everyone wants to look like these fabulous sitcom characters and live their dramatic lives that are portrayed on screen. This trend is not only found in Australia but also throughout North America where even Pharmacists and Vets are seen dressed in scrubs.

It’s a bit like this. Scrubs were worn underneath the surgeons operating gowns who – when they had finished their operation – took off their gown, presumably had a coffee or a break, before starting again by “scrubbing up” (washing their hands thoroughly) then putting on a new gown in preparation for their next operation. Thus they wore the same ‘scrubs’ all day and were often spotted in and around their wards and offices dressed in the scrubs well.

A new generation FreshChoice supermarket opened recently in Glen Eden Aukland to a lot of “hoop-lah”. Mr. John Key the Prime Minister cut the ribbon and declared the enterprise ‘open’ much to the delighted of expectant customers and the staff.

Everyone looked resplendent in their new uniforms designed and produced by the Specialized Apparel team in conjunction with the FreshChoice brand guardians. Using a Cool Comfort fabric in complementary colours of Avocado and Charcoal the gear carries the FreshChoice brand and transformed the staff into an integral part of that brand.

The FreshChoice Glen Eden site is one of a string of supermarkets around New Zealand and this was their second store in the North Island. An aggressive expansion programme is underway to bring stores into every region in

New Zealand over the next few years. Owned and operated by local businessmen, the management and staff have strong community link and involve themselves at local projects of benefit to schools and organisations nereby.
