Chapter One “NANCY, YOU’RE DRIVING me nuts!

Would you please finish that sundae? Ourplane leaves in an hour!” Bess Marvinlooked longingly at her friend’s dessert. Then she pulled a pink beret over herstraw blond hair and reached for thematching pink jacket that was hanging onthe back of her chair.

Nancy Drew looked at Bess, her blueeyes sparkling with amusement. “Take iteasy, Bess. We’re five minutes from theairport. George’ll get us there in plenty oftime.”

Nancy and Bess were flying to NewYork City to visit Nancy’s aunt, EloiseDrew, and George was dropping them off.

It was early, so they had decided to stopfor ice cream near the airport.

“Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne saidwith a laugh, throwing an arm around hercousin’s shoulders. “You’re just jealousbecause Nancy’s eating that fantastic, splendiferous, mouth-watering—”

“Mmmm. And it’s so-o-o good,” Nancysaid, licking her lips.

“Quit teasing, you guys,” Bess muttered.“I swear I gain weight just looking atsomething that fattening.”

“It does look good,” George said, wistfully agreeing. She and Bess werecousins as well as best friends, but theycouldn’t have been more different. Withher tall, athletic figure, her dark hair andeyes, and her levelheaded approach to

life, George was her cousin’s opposite inevery way.

“When you two get back from NewYork, we’ve got to come here again,”George said. “You can fill me in on yourtrip, and by then I’ll be able to ordersomething disgustingly rich and gooey.Just like those banana splits we had at thatwonderful restaurant, Rumpelmayer’s.”George sighed. “I wish I were going withyou.”

“I’ll never understand you,” said Bess.“How can you pass up a chance to go toNew York, the most glamorous city in theworld, just so you can run in some stupidrace? What’s the big deal?”

“Don’t be dumb, Bess. I’ve beentraining for this race for months. It may

only be the River Heights marathon, butit’s important to me.”

“Yummm,” Nancy savored one lastmouthful of ice cream before putting downher spoon. “Okay, I’m ready,” she saidwith a toss of her reddish gold hair.

Bess eyed the remains of Nancy’ssundae hungrily. “No,” she told herself, “Irefuse to blow my diet before we even getto New York. I mean, you never knowwho I might meet,” she said, looking at herfriends. “In New York, anything’spossible.”

Nancy and George exchanged knowingsmiles. Bess was sure to find cute guys inthe Big Apple, just as she did in RiverHeights.

“Well, if I know Nancy,” George said,

Page 10: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

“you two will probably wind up in themiddle of an adventure. Remember thelast time we were in New York? Wedidn’t even have time to go shopping!”

George was right. Intrigue and mysteryseemed to find Nancy wherever she went.At eighteen, she was already a rising starin the world of detectives.

“No way,” Nancy protested. “This timeI’m just going to be a tourist. I’m going tospend some time with my aunt, Eloise, dosome shopping, see a Broadway show—”

“A Broadway show? Are you kidding? There are at least six that I’m dying tosee!” Bess exclaimed.

“Hey, you two,” Nancy declared, looking at her watch. “Now we had betterhurry.”

Page 11: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

And with that, the three girls paid theirbill and filed out of the ice cream shop.

“Here we are,” Bess said, staring up at

the elegant old apartment building. “Thisstreet always looks like a movie set of‘old New York’ to me. Like it’s a hundredyears old, at least.”

It was true, Nancy thought. The streethad old-world charm, from the tall gingkotrees with their fanlike leaves to the old-fashioned gas lamps along the sidewalkthat fronted the many brownstonebuildings.

“Did I tell you my aunt bought herapartment last year when— Oh, look, there she is!” Nancy cried, waving to heraunt, who was coming out the front door.

Tall and elegant, Eloise Drew was afemale version of Nancy’s father, Carson. They had the same lustrous brown hairand aristocratic features.

“Nancy!” Eloise cried, hugging herniece warmly and planting a kiss on hercheek. “I’m so happy to see you! AndBess,” she said, taking Nancy’s friendwarmly by the hand. “How good it is tosee you again. How was your trip?”Eloise asked as they entered the building.

“Kind of boring,” Bess admitted with asmile.

“Wonderfully uneventful is more likeit,” Nancy said in the elevator up toEloise’s second-floor apartment. “I’vebeen so busy lately that it was great just tosit down and leaf through a magazine.”

“Well, here we are!” Eloise said, pushing open the door to her apartment.“I’ve redecorated a bit since you werehere the last time.”

The apartment was spacious and homey.Bright sunlight splashed across the walls, which were papered in a dainty floweryprint.

“I love what you’ve done!” Bessexclaimed enthusiastically as they werepassing through the living room. Shepaused to look out the window. “I hadforgotten there were trees in thebackyard!”

“In New York we call it a courtyard.Unfortunately, though, as you probablyremember, your room faces the street.”Nancy’s aunt led them across a small

hallway to a cozy bedroom. “Don’t worry, the street is usually pretty quiet.”

Just then a fire engine came careeningdown the block, its siren blasting. Eloisewaited for it to pass before adding, “Quietfor the city, that is.”

The room was all ready for the twogirls. Both beds were freshly made withlight blue comforters, and two sets offluffy white towels were neatly folded ontop of the modern oak bureau. Eloise slidopen a pair of white louvered doors, revealing a nearly empty closet.

“Here you are, ladies,” she announced.“And after you’ve unpacked, we’ll have asnack. For dinner, I thought we could go tomy favorite Chinese restaurant.”

“Super,” Nancy said, looking over at

Bess, who seemed enthusiastic. “As longas there’s no mystery involved, I’m gamefor anything.”

“Well—” Nancy’s aunt said hesitantly.“I wouldn’t go so far as to say ‘nomystery,’ Nancy. I was going to save it forlater, but since you brought it up . . .”

“Oh, no! I don’t want to hear anotherword. I’m here for a week’s vacation, andthat’s that!” Nancy flung herself on the bedand covered her head with a pillow.

“Okay, okay.” Eloise shrugged. “I onlythought you’d be interested because it hasto do with a TV show. . . .” She staredabsently at the ceiling, showing noemotion.

“What TV show?” Bess asked. Nancy’saunt didn’t answer. “Come on, Nancy, ask

her. I’ve got to know!”Nancy peeked out from under her

pillow, looking back and forth from Bessto Eloise. “Okay, Aunt Eloise,” shemuttered. “I give in. What show?”

“Well, let me start at the beginning,” theolder woman replied, sitting down next toNancy. “Yesterday, I happened to tell mydownstairs neighbor you were coming tostay with me. Her name is Mattie Jensen, and she’s an—”

“The Mattie Jensen? Of ‘Danner’sDream’?”

Eloise nodded, and Bess nearly faintedwith excitement.

“I don’t believe it! Mattie Jensen isyour neighbor! Is she as beautiful in reallife as she is on TV? Is she anything like

Serena Livingstone?”“Hey, wait.” Nancy propped herself up

on one elbow, looking bewildered. “Youguys are way ahead of me! Who’s SerenaLivingstone?”

Bess looked at Nancy as if she had justarrived from Mars. “That’s MattieJensen’s character on ‘Danner’s Dream.’Gosh, Nancy, you’re really out of it. Youat least know who Rory Danner is, don’tyou?”

Nancy shook her head.“His real name is Rick Arlen. He and

Mattie are the stars of the show,” Eloiseexplained. “Anyway, I told her that you’rea detective, and she got very excited.”

“Well, is she?” Bess persisted. Nancyand Eloise looked at her, puzzled. “As

Page 18: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

beautiful in real life, I mean. And astogether as Serena?”

“Oh!” Eloise laughed. “Well, let’s see.If anything, I’d say she’s more beautiful inperson. As for together—well, Mattie’s asweet girl, but she’s very emotional. Iguess you could say she has an artistictemperament.”

Eloise turned back to her niece.“Anyway, she was really hoping youwould stop by the set. It seems somestrange things have been happening toRick Arlen. She said she could get both ofyou guest passes for tomorrow morning. Ifyou’re willing, that is.”

“If we’re willing? Of course we are!”Bess declared. “I can’t believe I’m goingto visit the set of ‘Danner’s Dream’! Wait

till George hears about this! She’s ascrazy about Rick Arlen as I am.”

“Don’t tell me George watches‘Danner’s Dream,’ too,” Nancy cried insurprise. George was always eithertraining for some athletic event or lost inthe pages of a book. How could she havetime to watch daytime TV?

“Her mother tapes it for her,” Bessexplained. “Everybody watches Serenaand Rory. They’re the hottest couple onthe soaps!”

“I think I have heard of them, actually. He was featured in Chatter magazine lastmonth, right?” Nancy asked.

Bess nodded. “Blond hair, dazzling blueeyes, muscles out to here,” she said, indicating large biceps. “Need I say

more?”“I get the picture,” Nancy replied. “But

I promised myself—no mysteries.”“Oh, come on, Nancy. How many

chances do you get to meet real stars?”“Well, it would be kind of interesting to

see how a television show is put together—”

“Interesting?” Bess cried. “It’ll befantastic! I’ll die if we don’t go!”

“Then I guess I can’t say no, can I?”She turned to her aunt. “Okay, you can tellyour neighbor we’re on.”

“Great,” said Eloise. “Mattie said youcould show up at the studio around ten.”

“All right!” Bess exclaimed, her lightblue eyes dancing. “Now, I’ve just got todecide what to wear tomorrow.”

Page 21: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

“I’d rather check out that snack youwere talking about, Aunt Eloise.”

“Wait a minute!” cried Bess. “I’mcoming, I’m coming. I’ll pick out myclothes later.”

Nancy had to laugh. Bess was soexcited. She just hoped that Mattie Jensenwas as prone to exaggeration as AuntEloise had said she was. If so, how muchof a mystery could there really be?

“Are you sure this skirt fits?” Bess

asked. She and Nancy had just walkedthrough the huge glass doors ofWorldwide Broadcasting.

“You look fabulous,” Nancy assured herfriend. All morning Bess had been fussingin front of the mirror, getting ready for

Page 22: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

their visit to the set of “Banner’s Dream.”And the results were definitely worth thework. In her soft suede skirt, tights, andankle boots, Bess looked like a starherself.

“Okay, people,” a voice behind themshouted. “We go in here! Make sure yourguest pass is visible.”

Nancy turned and saw a group of aboutthirty people push through the same glassdoors she and Bess had just entered.

“It’s okay, Harry,” the tour guide in anavy blue uniform called to the securityguard. “They’re with me.”

“Where you going? ‘Danner’s Dream’?”the guard asked.

“You guessed it,” replied the tour guide.“It’s going to be a zoo in there today,”

Page 23: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

the guard muttered. “But whatever—Management must know what they’redoing. Take them into studio one, Joe.”

“Well, if I were Serena, I’d kill him,”Nancy heard a woman in the tour groupsay. “I mean, who does that Rory Dannerthink he Is?”

“They may have to kill him,” hercompanion replied. “I heard he’s leavingthe show at the end of the season.”

“No!”“Yes! Didn’t you read the Star Sentinel

last week? He wants to break his contractto make a movie.”

“Well, if you ask me, Rick Arlen hasgotten too big for his britches,” the firstwoman said. “We fans count, you know.“.

At the rear of the group was a large man

Page 24: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

in an old sweatshirt. He was shifting fromfoot to foot and muttering, “You’ll findout, Rory. You’re not that great.”

At last they all disappeared through aset of swinging doors. “Boy, they sureseem angry,” Nancy remarked.

“That’s nothing,” the security guardsaid. “Ever since Arlen decided he wasleaving the show, seems like everybodyhates him. I wouldn’t want to be him rightnow, no siree.” He shook his head. “Can Ihelp you girls?” he finally asked.

“We’re here to see Mattie Jensen,”Nancy said politely. “She’s expecting us.”

The guard checked his book. “MissDrew and Miss Marvin?” he asked. “Let’ssee—ten o’clock . . . she’s probably justgoing into makeup. It’s down the hall and

around to your right. First left after theproducer’s office.”

Thanking him, the girls made their waythrough the set of swinging doors that ledinto a long hallway. The noisy tour grouphad gone directly onto the set, but Nancyand Bess continued on, looking for themakeup room.

“This must be the hall he means,” saidNancy.

“Maybe we’ll pass the castingdirector’s office,” Bess whispered, following her.

Just then, two young secretaries steppedinto the hall ahead of them. “Well, I thinkhe has a good point!” one was saying tothe other.

“He may have a point, but that’s still no

way to talk to people. Even if he is theproducer!”

Feelings seem to be running higheverywhere, Nancy thought. Suddenly shegrabbed Bess by the wrist and signaledfor her to be quiet.

They stopped by an open door with asign that read William Pappas, Producer. They couldn’t see in or be seen. Inside, aman was shouting, probably into a phonesince no one responded to him. “I’ve toldyou before, he can’t do this to me! I don’tcare if he is Rick Arlen. If he leaves thisshow, he’ll never work again! Nobody—nobody—breaks a contract with me. I’llkill him before I let him work for someoneelse!”

Chapter Two “I CAN’T BELIEVE he feels that

strongly about Rick Arlen,” Besswhispered angrily.

Nancy peered into the office, takingcare to remain hidden. William Pappas’sface was flushed with anger as he staredat the phone he had just slammed down.He fumbled in his pocket for a cigar.

“Actors! They’re all alike! No class—none at all,” he muttered to himself. Thenhe rose and shouted to a timid-looking girlin an inner adjacent office. “Get thewriters on the phone and tell them I want aRory Danner death scene—the morerealistic the better. That idiot doesn’tdeserve to live after what he’s put me

through! And where’s my Danish? Youknow I can’t think before I’ve had mysecond coffee.”

“Come on!” Nancy said in Bess’s ear.“Let’s get out of here.” They hurried downthe long hallway without looking back.

“Gosh, Nancy,” Bess announced afterthey’d rounded a corner and were safelyout of sight, “I’ll bet he’s the one who’scausing all the trouble.”

“I don’t know, Bess. Maybe he has anartistic temperament, too. Remember whatmy aunt said about Mattie Jensen?”

Bess’s attention, however, was caughtby something else. “ ‘Makeup.’ Here weare.” Bess placed her hand over her heart.“I can’t believe I’m about to walk throughthat door and meet Mattie Jensen! How do

Page 29: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

I look? Are you sure this skirt is okay?”Nancy couldn’t help laughing. “You’re

too much,” she said teasingly. “It stilllooks great, but if you’re so uncomfortablewhy did you wear it?”

“Because it looks great—you just saidso yourself!” Taking a deep breath, Bessknocked on the door.

“Come in,” someone called out. Bessimmediately recognized the voice of herfavorite soap opera character.

Inside, Mattie Jensen was sitting in alarge, barber-style chair. Her famousauburn curls were wrapped in purplecurlers, and her porcelain skin wasscrubbed clean. Not a hint of makeupanywhere. But she still looked incrediblybeautiful, and her green eyes sparkled.

Page 30: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

“Mattie J-Jensen,” Bess sputtered.“You must be Nancy Drew,” Mattie

replied. She held out a manicured handand gave Bess a warm smile.

“No, I’m Bess Marvin. She’s Nancy.”“Oh, of course,” Mattie corrected

herself, taking Nancy’s hand. “It’s great tomeet both of you.”

“Thanks, same here,” Nancy answered.“Nancy, Bess, I’d like you to meet Kay

Wills. She’s our makeup artist and one ofthe great ones. Without her, I’d be lost.”

“Come on, Mattie, don’t be so modest.”Kay rolled her eyes at the girls and begandotting ivory base on Mattie’s forehead.“With looks like yours, you’ll never belost.”

“Well, looks aren’t everything, are

they?” Mattie sighed, holding her headstill as Kay blended in the foundation.

“Try telling that to your leading man,”Kay sniffed, continuing to work.

“Poor Rick,” Mattie murmured. “He’sso misunderstood. And now all this awfulstuff is happening to him. Nancy, maybeyou’ll be able to help.”

Nancy leaned against the wall. “To behonest, Ms. Jensen, I’m in New York onvacation. I really don’t want to getinvolved in anything complicated.”

“Please, call me Mattie. And you’ve gotto help him, Nancy! It’s a matter of lifeand death!”

“You know, you’re a lot more upsetthan he is, Mattie,” Kay put in. “As far as Ican tell, he loves the attention, no matter

Page 32: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

how negative it is.”Nancy was puzzled. “If you tell me

what’s going on, maybe I could give you afew suggestions,” she offered. After all,she told herself, giving advice wasdifferent from actually getting involved.

“Didn’t Eloise tell you?” Mattie askedfrantically, her luminous eyes filling withtears. “Someone is trying to kill Rick!”

“Don’t cry,” Kay ordered, dabbingMattie’s eyes with a tissue. “You’ll ruinyour makeup.”

“Sorry. It’s just so upsetting.”“Maybe you should start at the

beginning,” Nancy said, taking an emptychair next to Mattie.

“It began with the chocolate,” Mattieexplained, leaning forward. Kay chased

Page 33: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

after her face with a powder puff. “A boxof it came in with the rest of the fan mailone day. Rick is a maniac for chocolate,so he opened the box and ate one rightaway. It was so bitter that for a minute hethought he’d been poisoned. After a while, though, when he didn’t keel over, hefigured it was just a practical joke. We alldid. But then a letter arrived. It saidsomething like, ‘Scared you, didn’t I?Good, because this was just a dressrehearsal.’ About two days later, a watchcame in the mail. It was set at five tomidnight, and there was a note attachedthat said, ‘Your time’s running out.’ Yousee? Somebody is trying to kill him!”

Mattie was practically standing up inher chair. Kay gently pushed her back

Page 34: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

down and began working on her eyes.“Take it easy, hon,” she said matter-of-factly.

“Maybe this is a stupid question,”Nancy ventured, “but has anybody calledthe police?”

Kay laughed. “If we called the policeevery time we got a nasty letter aroundhere, we’d be calling them every day! Youshould see some of the fan mail.”

Mattie wheeled around in her chair.“But this is different! These aren’t justnasty letters, they’re real threats! Thetrouble is, nobody is taking themseriously!”

“Not even Rick?” Nancy asked.“Especially not Rick,” Mattie said

huffily. “He thinks nothing will ever hurt

Page 35: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

him. As far as he’s concerned, the wholething is the work of a single loony fan outfor kicks. I’m the only one who’s reallyworried, and that’s why I need your help.”

“She’ll help you, won’t you, Nancy?”Bess said, not really asking the question.“We’ll stay here as long as it takes!”

Nancy smiled wryly. Bess would havepromised anything if it meant she couldspend more time with her idols.

“But, Bess,” she said, protesting. “Wehave a lot of sightseeing planned, and—”

Just then, the door flew open and RickArlen burst in. Bess gasped. He reallywas even more gorgeous in person. A lockof blond hair had fallen over his forehead, and he impatiently brushed it away. Hewas holding up a black-and-white glossy

photograph of himself. The photo had beenscratched almost beyond recognition.

“Mattie,” he said, thrusting the pictureinto her hands, “it’s happened again! Lookat this!”

Mattie looked at the photo, and at themessage scrawled beneath it. “ ‘If youwon’t be mine, you won’t beanybody’s,’ ” she read. She looked up atNancy. “You see what I mean?”

“At least it’s an old picture,” Rick said, trying to make a joke. “It’s not even verygood, actually.”

Bess was standing, absolutely frozen, staring moronically at Rick. Noticing herobvious interest, Mattie hastily introducedthe girls to Rick, but it was clear that hismind was on other things. He hardly

was saying. “Imagine, tearing up my facelike that.”

“Please, Rick,” Mattie begged, “if youwon’t call the police, will you at least tellsecurity about this?”

“Come on, now,” he said, waving awayher concern. “What are they going to doabout it? Shake their heads and wring theirhands, that’s what. Anyhow, it’s probablyjust old man Pappas trying to scare me.”

“Rick!” Mattie gasped. “You don’treally think—”

“I don’t know what to think,” hemuttered with a shrug. “All I know is thatwe’re scheduled to be on the set in fiveminutes for dress rehearsal, and I haven’t

got time for nonsense like this.” Rickturned toward the door. Jaw set, eyesablaze, he was the picture of that perfectromantic rebel, Rory Danner. “See you onthe set, Mattie. Oh, and nice meeting you, girls.”

He gave Bess and Nancy a cursory nodas he left the room. “What a hunk!” Besswhispered hoarsely. “Oh, Nancy, you’vejust got to take this case! Just think whatmight happen to Rick if you don’t.”

“Bess, sick as it might be, sending hatemail is not a felony.”

“Please,” Mattie said, breaking in.“Something’s very wrong here, I’m sure ofit. I’d feel so much better if you’d at leaststay and watch this morning’s dressrehearsal.”

Nancy looked from Mattie to Bess andback again. There was no way they wouldlet her say no. Besides, she reasoned, watching a soap rehearsal was kind oflike sightseeing, wasn’t it? “Okay, we’llstay,” she agreed.

“Oh, Nancy!” Mattie cried happily.“You won’t regret this! I promise!”

Nancy hoped not. But she couldn’t getrid of the depressing feeling that for thehundredth time, a relaxing vacation wasabout to be ruined.

On their way to the set, Nancy filled

Mattie in on what she and Bess hadoverheard outside Pappas’s office.

“Those two are really on the outs thesedays,” Mattie said. “Ever since Rick got

that film deal and gave his notice, it’s asthough a war has been declared betweenthem. I can’t really blame Mr. Pappas, though. The show’s ratings depend onRick. If he goes, ‘Danner’s Dream’ couldbe in big trouble, and that means troublefor all of us.”

“Hmmm.” Nancy thought for a moment.“So it’s not just Mr. Pappas who’s downon Rick.”

“Oh, no. In fact, lately it’s been Rickagainst the world.” She stopped. “Well, here we are.”

Mattie pushed against a vacuum-sealeddoor. With a whoosh, it opened, and thethree of them walked onto the set.

Nancy and Bess gazed around themassive studio. In straight rows, rooms

that had three walls but no ceilings wereset up. Rows of klieg lights hung onsuspended bars. Above the lights was anarrow catwalk, and above that, totaldarkness.

On the ground level, the activity wasincredible. Hundreds of cables woundacross the floor, and several huge cameraswere mounted on dollies. Each one wassurrounded by people. On the set of theDanner living room, where the first scenewas about to be shot, set dressers wereputting the final touches on the scenery. And in the middle of it all stood RickArlen. Kay was fussing over his makeup, and he was going over his lines with ascript girl. But in case he or anyone forgota line, a teleprompter stood in either

corner of the room. All an actor had to dowas cast a glance at one of them and readhis lines from the screen.

Nancy and Bess were struck by thestrangeness and complexity of it all. Theylooked dazed as Mattie motioned them toa spot on the floor where they could watchthe rehearsal and still be out of the way. Then she disappeared behind the walls ofa set.

“Can you believe this?” Besswhispered excitedly.

“Could somebody tell Rick to get on theset, please?” A beautiful black-hairedwoman barked impatiently into a smallmegaphone.

“I’m right here, Lillian, dear,” Rickpurred sarcastically. “What would you

trying too hard to keep the anger out of hervoice. “You shouldn’t need ateleprompter, Rick. You’re a big boy anda professional.”

“If you’re referring to that one smallincident, Lillian, you’ll also recall that Ireceived a death threat that morning. Itwasn’t exactly my best day.”

Suddenly a voice boomed over the set’ssound system. “Lillian, back off, willyou?”

“Who’s that?” Nancy wondered outloud.

A bearded stagehand who was walkingby with a line of cables answered her.“That’s Luther Parks, the director. He’s upthere.” The stagehand pointed to aPlexiglas booth above the door at the backof the room. “He watches the rehearsal ona bank of TVs up there, and then chooseswhich camera shots they’ll use.”

“And who’s Lillian?” Nancy asked.“Ready to roll, ladies and gentlemen,”

the director’s voice interrupted them.“Let’s have quiet on the set, please.”

“Places, everyone!” the stage manageryelled. “Charlie, are we locked up?” Theman at the door nodded. A bright red lightwent on above him.

“That light means we’re shooting,” thesame stagehand explained in a soft

whisper. With a quick smile, he was gone.In the silence of the huge studio, Nancy

could feel the crackling of tension. For asplit second no one moved. Then Rickappeared on the set and sat down on thebeige sofa in the Danner living room. Withhis head in his hands and his elbows onhis knees, he looked just like the torturedRory Danner, brooding over his life. ThenMattie, playing the cool and dignifiedSerena, appeared in the living roomdoorway.

“Rory?” she called out softly. “May Icome in?”

Rick looked up, but then dropped hishead back into his hands. “I don’t want tosee you, Serena,” he growled. “Just getout and leave me alone!”

Mattie stood by the door, cold as ice.“Rory, I have to talk to you—right now.”The cameras rolled in for a closeup.

Just then, Nancy noticed a faint shadowmoving back and forth on the back wall ofthe set. She glanced up to see what wascausing it. High overhead, she saw a klieglight wobbling wildly on its track.Horrified, Nancy watched, as it broke offthe bar with a sickening snap and hurtleddownward. It was heading right for Rick!

Chapter Three NANCY STOOD UP and dove across

the set, landing on top of Rick. The sofabeneath them toppled over backward.Everyone watched in frozen terror as theheavy lamp hit the floor where the couchhad been, shattering into a thousandpieces.

Moments later pandemonium broke outas the cast and crew gathered around thescene of the disaster. Mattie rushed up toNancy and Rick, who were still in a heapon the floor, gasping for breath.

“Rick! You could’ve been killed!”Mattie cried. The stage manager wascalling for everyone to remain calm on theset, and Bess tried to push her way

“What in the world is going on aroundhere?” William Pappas hurried onto theset, pushing people aside as he went.“This is all I need! Our insurance rates arehigh enough as it is!” he muttered angrily.“Is anybody hurt?”

“Nope,” Rick replied from his positionon the floor. “I was just rescued by thisbeautiful creature.” He looked up atNancy with a grateful smile. “Hello, gorgeous. Where have you been all mylife?”

Nancy turned red to the roots of her hairas she scrambled off Rick and onto herfeet. Brushing herself off, she started to

push her way through the crowd ofonlookers. She had to find Bess.

“Wait!” Rick called after her. “Don’tleave me now!” With that, a group ofstagehands who were standing nearbybroke out in nervous laughter.

Just then Nancy felt a hand on hershoulder. It was Mattie. “Thank heavensyou were here. If you hadn’t gotten to Rickso quickly . . .” She shivered. Turning tothe crowd, she called out, “Everyone, I’dlike you to meet Nancy Drew. She’s myguest today.” Everyone clapped, andMattie smiled weakly. “And now I’mgoing to call security. Maybe they’llbelieve that someone really is after Rick!”And with a toss of her pretty head, shestepped off the set, headed for the

intercom behind the scenery.“Well, dear, that’s one way to meet a

star,” Lillian observed caustically, glaringat Nancy.

“Wait just a minute—” Nancy began. But then she decided it would be betternot to say anything. Lillian might not bethe friendliest person she’d ever met, butthe last thing Nancy wanted was to makean enemy at the beginning.

Beginning of what? Nancy askedherself. An investigation? Was therereally anything to investigate? After all,she reasoned, accidents do happen.

Dodging Lillian’s pointed remark,Nancy excused herself and made her wayover to the corner of the set. Rick wasthere, chatting with Bess.

Page 51: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

“Ah, my savior!” he said when he sawNancy. But her quick frown made it clearthat she wasn’t going to fall for his lines.

“Hey, girls,” Rick suggested, “whydon’t the three of us go back to mydressing room? We can have a soda andget to know each other a little better whilethey’re cleaning up this mess.”

“Oh, we’d love to!” crooned Bess.Elbowing Nancy in the ribs, she promptedher friend. “Wouldn’t we?”

“I guess that would be all right,” Nancyshrugged. Until security had finishedlooking around, no one would be allowednear the scene of the accident anyway. And maybe she could use the time to findout a little more about Rick Arlen.

“By the way, who was that woman—

Lillian somebody—who was so angry atyou earlier?” Nancy asked him as theyheaded down the empty corridor.

“Her name is Lillian Weiss,” he hissed, making the name sound snakelike. “She’sthe assistant director. While Luther is upin the booth playing God, she’s hiswatchdog.”

“Sounds like she’s not your favoriteperson.”

“She’s not. But then, Lillian’s just anobody around here. I don’t let her get tome—she’s not worth even thinking about.”

Just then they came to a door with apolished brass star on it and Rick’s nameabove the star. “Come into my parlor, saidthe spider to the fly,” he quipped lightly. He ushered them in and closed the door

quietly behind them. The bright lights in the dressing room

blinded Nancy for a moment when shestepped in.

“I love this room—it’s so warm andbright. This is the place I go to get awayfrom the craziness out there.” He pointedtoward the door. “Let’s see, now,” hemumbled. “I’d offer you a chocolate, butI’m afraid they’re a little bitter. But can Iget you something to drink?” Rick openeda small refrigerator.

Bess pushed a lock of blond hair behindher ear before she said, “Okay. Um, a dietsoda for me.”

“P o u r vous?” he asked, turning toNancy.

“The same, thanks.”

Page 54: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

“You’re a very smart girl. And brave, too. Would you care to marry me?” Rickhad taken Nancy’s hand gently in his own,and now he offered her a bouquet ofimaginary flowers with the other.

Nancy pulled her hand away and lookedat him. “I have a boyfriend. Sorry,” shesaid, apologizing.

“Ah—I’m crushed. Well, then,” hepurred, instantly turning to Bess and takingher hand. “How about you? Would youmarry me?”

Bess’s eyes twinkled mischievously.“Okay, you’re on.”

“Oh, you only like me for my looks,”Rick complained. Nancy saw him catch aquick glimpse of himself in the mirrorbefore he gazed back at Bess

Page 55: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

appreciatively. “But then, you’re not toobad yourself.”

Bess blushed. She seemed to melt intothe dressing table as Rick stared at her.

Rick Arlen obviously knew how to flirt,Nancy observed. And Bess was definitelybeing taken in.

“Well,” said Nancy, trying to break thespell, “for a guy who just barely escapeda terrible accident, you’re in an incrediblygood mood.”

“Of course! Of course I am!” Rick saidagreeably as he poured the sodas. “I waslucky. That’s the best way to be if you’regoing to be in an accident. Don’t youagree? But then, I’ve always been a luckyguy. I mean, I just met you two, didn’t I?”

“Some people don’t think the things that

have been happening to you lately areaccidents,” Nancy said.

Rick sank into a plush chair and lookedat her impatiently. “Some people are alsofrightened of their own shadows. Look, when you’re a TV star, you have to expecta little craziness. It comes with theterritory. Along with a lot of good things, too. Has anyone ever told you that you’rebeautiful,” he added offhandedly to Bess. She almost swooned into his costumerack.

She’s really eating this up, Nancythought. Bess actually seemed to takeRick’s baloney seriously.

“Look, I’d better get back to the set,”Nancy said, putting down her soda.“Security should have had a good look

around by now, and I want to find outexactly what happened. Are you coming,Bess?” she asked.

“Is it okay if I meet you back there in alittle while?” Bess responded.

“Don’t worry about Bess here,” Rickput in with a grin. “I’ll take care of her.”

That was just what Nancy was afraid of. Pushing through the thick, soundproof

door, Nancy stepped back onto the set.Immediately she saw Mattie trying tobreak up a fight. One of the men wasWilliam Pappas. Nancy hadn’t seen theother man before. He was slim, handsome, and at that moment his eyes were ablazewith anger.

“It was an accident!” Pappas was

Page 58: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

shouting. “Technicians are only human. Now, if you’ll get off my back, I’ll findout who was responsible and deal withthat person. I can’t do anything if you’regoing to stand here and scream at me allday!”

“You still don’t get it, do you?” theother man shouted back. “Mattie couldhave been killed in there! And I promiseyou, if so much as a hair on my client’shead is ever hurt, your network will befacing the biggest lawsuit the world hasever seen! Come on, Mattie!” He grabbedMattie’s arm and marched toward thedoor. Nancy ducked behind a piece ofscenery and continued to watch.

“Dwayne, please, calm down!” Mattieprotested. “No one was trying to hurt me! I

was nowhere near the accident!”“It’s the network’s responsibility to

protect you from things like this, Mattie.Look at those shards of glass! What if oneof them had cut your face? Your careerwould be ruined.”

“Nobody is going to get hurt, Dwayne,”Pappas said, calmer now. “This is nevergoing to happen again. Now, will youplease get out of here so we can clean upthis mess and get on with the show?”

As Dwayne stalked off, Nancy heardPappas remark to Mattie, “It’s just myluck that that idiot agent was here today. The last thing I need is a nervous Nellieon the set the day the roof falls in. Nooffense, Mattie, but the man is a completefool. Excuse me, please, will you?”

As Pappas breezed by her, Nancygrabbed Mattie’s elbow, and theyfollowed him. The producer walkedimmediately over to the chief of securityand began asking questions. Nancy andMattie got as close as they could withoutbeing noticed and listened intently.

“It looks like an accident, plain andsimple, Mr. Pappas,” the security manwas saying.

“Thank you,” Pappas muttered. Then hestrode directly over to where the lightingtechnicians were gathered. “Which one ofyou was responsible for checking thelights this week?” he asked.

“I was,” admitted one of the menunhappily. It was the man with the beardwho had talked to Nancy and Bess earlier.

“But they checked out fine. In fact, just thismorning—”

“What’s your name?” asked Pappasdarkly.

“Uh, MacPherson, Mr. Pappas, but—”“You’re fired, MacPherson. Stop by the

front office and pick up your severancepay. I don’t ever want to see you aroundhere again, understand?” Before the mancould say another word, Pappas was gone.

Mattie and Nancy looked at each other.“You’ve got to believe me,” Mattiewhispered urgently. “That was noaccident, I’m sure of it!”

Nancy sighed. If security thought it wasan accident, it probably was. Still . . . “Ithink I’ll take a look around myself. Younever know.”

Page 62: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

There wasn’t much to see. All the glassfrom the broken light had been swept intoa pile in the corner, and the light itselfwas in pieces against the wall. Each piecehad been tagged for reference. Securityseemed to have done a thorough job.

Nancy was about to give up and go backto Rick’s dressing room but decided totake a last look around. As she walkedover to the back wall of the living room, aflash of something metallic caught her eye,and she bent to the floor. There, almostcompletely hidden from view, was a pieceof metal with a bolt attached. One edge ofthe metal was shiny, as if it had beenscraped or cut.

Nancy walked over to the lightingtechnician, who was gloomily gathering

his things together. “Excuse me,” she said,“but—could I ask you a question?”

The man turned around and looked ather for a moment. “Oh, hi, I rememberyou. You’re the girl who saved Rick’slife,” he said with a smile. “I guess Ishould thank you. I’d have been in realtrouble if he’d gotten hurt.”

“You don’t have to thank me,” Nancywaved him off. “But you could tell mewhat this is.” She showed him the boltshe’d found.

“Why, that’s a C-clamp. They’re used tohold the lights on the bar.”

“Does it look odd to you? Is thereanything strange about it?”

MacPherson studied the clamp briefly.“One end’s been sawed,” he gasped.

“Almost clean through. The rest looks likeit snapped off. This must be— But if—”

“Just what I was thinking,” Nancy said, agreeing. “That was no accident thismorning. The light was rigged so it wouldfall. Somebody tried to kill Rick Arlen—and almost succeeded!”

Chapter Four “DO YOU BELIEVE me now?” Mattie

was on the verge of tears as she pleadedwith the chief of security. She and Nancyhad just shown him the broken clamp.“I’ve been telling people for weeks thatsomeone was after Rick, but nobodybelieved me. You’ve got to believe menow!”

“Now, Mattie,” Pappas said, patting hisleading lady on the arm. “Let’s not gethysterical and blow this out ofproportion.”

“Well, I’ll be,” the security manmuttered as he examined the C-clamp.“Where exactly did you say you foundthis, young lady?”

“Well, it proves the light wassabotaged. No doubt about it.”

“This is just what I need,” Pappasmuttered in frustration. “I don’t haveenough problems without someonesabotaging my show!”

“Mr. Pappas, who actually has accessto this stage?” the chief wanted to know.

“Well, the crew and the actors, ofcourse. Nobody else, really. Maybe anoccasional guest, but they all register atthe front desk.”

“Wasn’t there a tour group in hereearlier today?” Nancy asked.

Pappas snapped his fingers. “Right!”“And some of them were mad at Rory

Danner, too,” Nancy said.“You don’t suppose some crazy fan

could have—” Pappas shook his head.“There’re a lot of nuts out there, Mr.

Pappas,” the chief said. “All it takes isone person who can’t tell fantasy fromreality.”

“That settles it!” Pappas exclaimed.“From now on this set is closed to anyonenot directly involved in the show.”Yelling across the studio, Pappas repeatedhis order for everyone to hear. “Thatmeans no guests, no agents, no mothers, fathers, sisters, or brothers. I want this setsealed tighter than a pharaoh’s tomb!

“Now, we’ll take a couple-hour breakand then back to work. If you needanything, I’ll be in my office.”

After Pappas walked away, Nancyturned toward Mattie.

“Thank goodness he gave us a break,”she told Nancy. “I’ve got to go rest.”Rubbing her eyes, she added, “See youlater. And thanks again for saving Rick’slife.” Flashing Nancy a grateful smile,Mattie walked off the set.

Since the set was closed to guests,Nancy and Bess had to leave. Nancybegan to make her way back towardRick’s dressing room to collect Bess. Butshe soon realized she must have gonethrough the wrong door or made a wrongturn somewhere. One long corridor led toanother, and for a moment Nancy didn’tknow which way to turn. Then the soundof a door slowly opening caught her

Page 69: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

attention. Instinctively knowing that sheshouldn’t be there, Nancy moved back intoa recessed doorway and waited silently.

Nancy could just see Lillian Weissnervously looking both ways beforestepping into the hall. Once the door wasclosed behind her, Lillian seemed torelax. Nancy’s heart was in her throat asshe realized Lillian was heading straightfor her. Nancy opened the door behind herand slammed it, making it sound as if shehad just come through that door. Shestepped out into the corridor.

“Well, well,” Lillian said, greetingNancy with a snarl. “Is our fair rescuerlost and helpless?”

“Yes, I guess I am. I was looking forRick’s dressing room, actually,” Nancy

Page 70: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

told her. Well, it was almost the truth.“Continue down this corridor and make

your first left,” Lillian snapped. “And bythe way, it was nice knowing you. I’msure now that Pappas has closed the set,you won’t be around anymore. Too bad.I’m sure you were Rick’s favorite littlebodyguard.” With a smug smile, Lilliancontinued down the hall and disappearedaround a corner.

The room that Lillian had come out ofturned out to be the prop room. Aftermaking sure she was alone, Nancyventured inside.

At first she was overwhelmed by whatshe saw. The room was huge, with severallong aisles. Stacked from floor to ceiling, making an incredible clutter, were

Page 71: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

thousands upon thousands of items—anything that could ever possibly beneeded on the set of the show. Asorganized as the room seemed to be, witheverything numbered and labeled, therewas no way to keep it all neat. Dustcovered some of the items that hadn’t beenused recently, and Nancy felt her nosebegin to itch.

There seemed to be nobody there, butwhen Nancy sneezed, she heard a rustlingin a far corner. A copy of the Daily Newsmoved, and a grizzled head poked outfrom under it. The old man had a mop ofunruly white hair flowing out from anancient orange cap.

“Who’s there?” a crackly voice called.“I’m awake, I’m awake. On the job all the

wizened old man. He wore redsuspenders, which held up a pair of baggygray pants, and he was covered with asmuch dust as everything else in the room.Nancy would have almost believed that hehad been sleeping there uninterrupted foryears.

“Sorry, I must have opened the wrongdoor,” she said, apologizing.

“Oh, it’s good to have a littlecompany,” the man said. “This week hasbeen just kitchen stuff and living roomknickknacks, day after day. I’ve beensitting here reading my paper all weekwithout seeing a soul.”

“But wasn’t the assistant director in

Lillian in ages. The only time she evercame into the prop room was to complainthat a butcher knife didn’t look sharpenough. I had to put a little oil on it to giveit that threatening gleam when the camerapanned in on it. That’s an old prop man’strick, you know.”

“Achoo!” Nancy couldn’t help sneezingagain. “Are you sure no one was in hereearlier?” she asked again, persisting.

“Absolutely one hundred percent, younglady. And nobody gets anything by me.”

That’s what you think, Nancy thought asshe said goodbye to the prop man. As shestepped back into the corridor and madeher way to Rick’s dressing room, Nancy’s

mind was in a whirl. Maybe one of thefans from the tour group had tamperedwith the klieg light. She supposed it waspossible. But even so, something funnywas definitely going on. What had Lillianbeen doing in the prop room? And whywas she so hostile? Nancy wasdetermined to find out. And that meant shehad to get onto the set again the next dayand do some more checking around.

Here I am, she said to herself as sheturned a corner and saw the familiar doorwith the star on it. Wait till I tell Besswhat I found!

A moment later, after a quick knock, shethrew open the door, smiling broadly. What she saw made her stop dead. Besswas in Rick’s arms, and they looked about

Chapter Five “NANCY!” BESS CRIED, awkwardly

trying to disentangle herself from rick’sembrace.

Nancy looked from a blushing Bess toRick and back, “I’m sorry to interrupt, but—”

“It’s not what you think!” Bess said, interrupting her as she tossed her blondhair over her shoulder and straightenedher collar. “Rick just asked me to helphim rehearse, that’s all.”

“She’s very talented,” Rick said, puttinghis arm around Bess’s waist and drawingher closer.

“Well, I just came to tell you thatPappas closed the set to all visitors,”

ruin her day. “Nancy, you’ll never guesswhat Rick has offered to do!”

“It’s really nothing,” Rick said,protesting.

“Nothing?” Bess replied, her eyesdancing with excitement. “You call takingme all over the city in a limousinenothing?”

“Well, I already have the limousine.”Rick shrugged modestly.

“He’s going to give me a personal tourof the city on Saturday! Would youbelieve he’s never been on top of theEmpire State Building?”

“How can you live in New York andnot visit the Empire State Building?”

never been there,” he explained. “Wealways say we’re going to go someday, but somehow we never get around to it.It’ll be a real treat for me.”

Bess continued to gaze at the handsomeTV star. Nancy couldn’t help worryingthat her friend might be getting in over herhead.

“Bess, aren’t you forgetting that Rickmight be in danger? I don’t know if it’ssuch a great idea for you to be alone withhim, you know.”

“Don’t be silly!” Rick laughed, wipinghis makeup off with a thick cloth. “I cantake care of both of us. Listen, I’ve got aneven better idea—why don’t you come,

“That’s great!” Bess cried happily, turning to Nancy.

“Okay, count me in,” Nancy agreed.Spending the day with Rick was one wayto keep an eye on him. And on Bess.

“Come on, Bess,” she said, taking herfriend by the elbow. “We’d better leavethe set. Nice meeting you, Rick.” Nancyturned to the door, but Bess wasn’t quitefinished talking to Rick.

“Well, I’m sorry we have to go so soon, but we’re definitely on for Saturday, aren’t we?” she asked.

“I can hardly wait, love,” he replied, blowing her a kiss. “Till then, ‘Parting issuch sweet sorrow.’ ”

“I heard,” Nancy replied uneasily.“Oh, Nancy,” Bess cooed, “he’s so

wonderful! Not at all conceited like somebig stars probably are. Just think, I have adate with the Rick Arlen. Me—BessMarvin, regular person! Do you knowhow many girls would kill for a date withthe star of ‘Danner’s Dream’?”

“Yeah—” Nancy said, only half payingattention. She was wondering who wastrying to kill Rick Arlen—and why?

“We were standing there, watching this

intense scene. I mean, it was so quiet you

Nancy looked up from the microwave, where she was getting ready to bake threepotatoes. “Uh-huh,” she agreed.

“And Nancy saved the day. You shouldhave seen her,” Bess said, continuing. “Idon’t know how she reacted so fast. Thelight only missed him by a few inches. And Rick is amazing. He wasn’t evenafraid! He said it was all in a day’s work. Can you believe it?”

Eloise’s eyes clouded over with worry.“I’m not sure I want you two poking

Nancy looked over at Bess and put herfinger on her lips, but Bess didn’t pick upon it.

“Oh, no!” Bess went on. “It wasn’t anaccident! Nancy found the evidence—somebody tampered with the light!”

“Nancy!” Aunt Eloise exclaimed. “Doyou mean to say Mattie was right tosuspect something was wrong? Oh, dear, please be careful! I don’t want you gettinghurt.”

Bess laughed and shook her head.“Don’t worry, Rick says it’s just somecrazy fan trying to scare him. Now thatthey’ve closed the set, I’m sure there

Mattie, we’re here. Come on up.”Replacing the receiver, she said, “I hopeit’s all right if Mattie joins us. I shouldhave asked you first.”

“It’s fine with me!” Bess cried happily.Nancy went to the vegetable bin and

took out another potato. After rinsing it,she popped it into the microwave.

“That’s it,” Eloise said. “Dinner in tenminutes.”

In a few minutes there was a knock onthe door, and Nancy went to open it.

“Hi, everybody!” Mattie called as shebreezed into the apartment with a bouquetof spring flowers. Nancy was amazed at

how carefree Mattie seemed. “Oh, I’m sohappy you’re on the case,” she cried, embracing Nancy warmly. “I knownothing bad can happen to Rick now.”

Nancy frowned slightly. Everyoneseemed to think Rick Arlen was safe, including Rick himself. She wasn’t at allconvinced.

“Did you hear about your niece, thismorning’s heroine?” Mattie said, goingover to kiss Eloise and hand her theflowers. “You weren’t exaggerating whenyou told me how brave she was.”

Eloise reddened and looked over atNancy. “Don’t get the wrong idea,” shewarned. “I’m proud of you, but thatdoesn’t mean I approve of your takingunnecessary risks. Please be careful.”

gathered around the large oak table in thedining area.

“Marinated steak. Smells great, and Idon’t mind saying so myself,” Eloiseremarked. “I may not be the greatest cook, but every once in a while I do all right.”

“I can testify personally that she’s afantastic cook,” Mattie said with a laugh. After they ate and chatted for a while,Mattie turned more serious and asked,“So, Nancy, what do you think? Was itsomeone from the tour group whotampered with the light?”

“Well, some people seem to think that,”Nancy answered. “But from what I cantell, his fans aren’t the only ones who’re

angry at Rick. There are other people—people who see him every day. Pappas, for instance. Or Lillian Weiss. Maybeothers, too.”

“Hah! You don’t know the half of it,”Mattie said. “There isn’t a person on thatset who Rick hasn’t alienated at one timeor another.”

“Really? Why?” Nancy wondered.“Oh, Rick’s just— He’s talented,

handsome, and rich. Some people wouldhate him just for that, but he’s also walkedover a lot of people to get where he is.He’s used a lot of people, broken a lot ofhearts—” She sighed deeply.

Was one of those broken heartsMattie’s? Nancy wondered. The actressseemed so fragile and sad when she talked

about Rick.“I wish I could point to just one person

and say, That’s the one,’ but Rick hasmade a lot of enemies.” Mattie shook herhead and reached for her glass of mineralwater.

“People resent his success,” Besscommented. “He was telling me about thattoday, about how jealous people are ofhim. How they all want something fromhim.”

“Oh,” Mattie said, turning to face Bess.“You two were talking together?”

“Uh-huh!” Bess said happily. “Wefound out we have a lot in common.”

“I see,” Mattie said, looking down ather plate.

“Wait a minute,” Bess said slowly.

“Oh, no,” Mattie quickly replied. “Thatis, not anymore.”

So, Mattie was one of those brokenhearts! Nancy thought.

“Oh, phew.” Bess breathed a sigh ofrelief. “I wouldn’t want to steal somebodyelse’s boyfriend or anything. You see,he’s asked me out for Saturday.”

“He—he asked you out?” Mattiewhispered. Her eyes grew incrediblywide, and her mouth fell open.

“Yes,” Nancy interjected soothingly.“And I’m going along, too. It’s perfect, don’t you think? That way I can keep aneye on Rick.”

“I see.” Mattie looked somewhat

Chapter Six “LISTEN, BESS—” MATTIE relaxed

her stare a bit, trying hard not to look sosevere. “I really don’t want to upset you, but, honestly, Rick can really love themand leave them. Maybe it’s because deepdown inside, he’s very unsure of himself.Or maybe he’s become too successful toofast, and— Sometimes I wonder if he canreally handle it.”

“Rick? Unsure of himself?” Bess shookher head, in disbelief. “I’m sorry, Mattie. Idon’t think you know the real Rick.”

“Maybe not, but I’ve known him a longtime. We did summer stock together yearsago. He was different then, warm andsincere. In the past few years, he’s really

“Well, maybe he just hasn’t met theright girl yet,” Bess suggested.

“Wait a minute,” Nancy interrupted.“Mattie, why are you so concerned abouta man you’ve just told us is cold, cruel, and steps on people?”

“Oh, I don’t know,” Mattie answeredsoftly. “I guess I still think of him as afriend, even if it didn’t work out betweenus.” Looking over at Nancy imploringly, she added, “Rick would never admit it,but I’m sure that way down deep he’sscared. I’d just feel so much better if youwere on the set tomorrow.”

Bess rolled her eyes and got up from thetable. Nancy watched her go. She hoped

“I’d like to be there myself,” Nancyreplied, turning back to Mattie. “But nowthat the set’s closed to visitors—”

“Wait a minute!” Mattie cried. Her eyesshimmered with excitement. “I just got abrilliant idea! We’re shooting a hospitalscene tomorrow, and I’ll bet I could getyou and Bess jobs as extras! What do youthink? Will you do it?”

Across the kitchen, Bess couldn’t helpjumping up and down with excitement.“That would be fantastic!”

Nancy thought for a moment. “Are yousure you could do it?”

“Almost sure. Here, let me call thecasting director. Eloise, do you have a

Bess loaded the dishwasher. “Justimagine, Nancy, appearing oh my favoritesoap!”

“We’re in luck!” Mattie announced, hanging up the phone a few minutes later.“She says you two can be nurses. Justreport to the studio at seven sharp, and gostraight to the costume room as soon asyou get there.”

“But what if people recognize us?”Nancy wondered out loud.

“Oh, they won’t recognize you.” Mattielaughed and stood up to leave. “No oneever looks at the extras. Besides, whenyou’re on camera you’ll probably havewigs and uniforms on. You probably

Mattie had gone. “No matter what anyonesays, I’ve read that a lot of big starsstarted out as extras. You never know—this could be my lucky break!”

Bess and Nancy had reported to the

studio at seven the next morning. After thedry blocking, in which they learned whatthey were to do, they reported to makeupand wardrobe. Now, standing onpedestals as two wardrobe peoplefinished their final fittings for the dressrehearsal, Bess and Nancy couldn’t helpgiggling.

“You’re really a knockout as a brunette,Nancy!” Bess said.

Page 95: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

Nancy looked over at her friend, whowas wearing an identical uniform. She hada white nurse’s cap over her bright redwig, and Nancy had never seen her lookmore excited.

“Your dress rehearsal will be third, ladies,” a production assistant told them.“After the big love scene, which is thesecond, report to Lillian. You know whereto stand and what to do from the firstrehearsal. So, break a leg. Oh, if you wantto catch Rick and Mattie in rehearsal, youcan. Rory and Serena are going to have abig scene. It’s supposed to be pretty hotstuff.”

Bess immediately dashed down thecorridor to the set, determined not to missa word of Mattie and Rick’s scene. It was

all Nancy could do to keep up with her.Watching the cast and crew gather

around the set of Serena Livingstone’sliving room, Nancy could feel theiredginess. The near-disaster of the daybefore had obviously gotten to everyone.Even though the set was closed tooutsiders, Nancy could tell that nobodyfelt truly safe.

The only person who seemed at easewas Rick. Flashing a smile at Bess as hewalked onto the set, he looked as if hewere on top of the world.

He took his place in the middle of theset, and slowly Rick Arlen seemed to fadeaway. When the director finally called“Action,” he had become Rory Danner.

In the scene, Rory was supposed to tell

Serena that he’d be hers forever, if shewould have him. Even though it was anintense scene, Nancy noticed that Rickwas reading nearly all his lines from theteleprompter. But then, with all theexcitement the day before, she reasoned,he probably hadn’t had time to memorizethem.

Mattie was having trouble with herlines, too. She had excused herself earlythe night before to go home and work, butobviously she didn’t remember much.Although she was really throwing herselfinto the scene, Nancy noticed that she, too, kept glancing over at her teleprompter tocheck her lines.

“Should I leave, Serena? Is that whatyou want?” Rick asked, pacing in front of

Mattie nervously.“No, Rory, don’t go. I love you,”

Serena said. Her voice was quivering, andher emerald eyes were full of tears. “I’vealways loved you, even when you didn’twant me.”

“Cut!” came the director’s voice.“Mattie, I need you to cool it a little. Ifyou start the scene at such a highemotional pitch, we won’t have anywhereto go.”

“Right, Luther.” Mattie nodded up to thedirector’s booth.

“Okay, everyone, take it from ‘Should Ileave,’ ” Lillian ordered.

“Should I leave, Serena? Is that whatyou want?” Rick said.

“No, Rory, don’t go. I love you! I’ve

They were into it by then. Mattie andRick were utterly convincing, makingeveryone who was watching reallybelieve they were desperately in love.Bess had tears in her eyes as she watchedthem move slowly toward each other. Finally, Serena collapsed in Rory’s arms.

“Here comes her big speech,” Lillianmuttered under her breath to nobody inparticular. “Watch her screw it up.”

“Oh, Rory, I want to do so many thingswith you,” Mattie whispered hoarsely. “Iwant to take walks in the rain with you, Iwant to sit with you under the stars on adeserted beach. I want to dance with you,to sing with you, to—”

was lying on the floor. After what seemedforever, her eyes began to flutter open. She looked dazed. Mattie struggled to herfeet with Rick’s help. The look in her eyesonly grew wilder.

“Look!” she cried, pointing to theteleprompter.

Her monologue had been changed. Itread:

“I WANT TO DANCE WITH YOU, TOSING WITH YOU, TO MURDER YOU.

“What in the name of— What is this?”Pappas yelled. “Get me the teleprompteroperator! I want to talk to her right now!”

“I’m here, Mr. Pappas.” A short red-haired girl spoke up.

“Would you care to explain this?” heasked, arching his eyebrows.

“Well, sir, I, uh—I really can’t explainit,” the girl stammered. “I got here early totype in the scene, and I was at thekeyboard all morning. The only time I leftwas to take a phone call. And I know Iwasn’t gone for more than a minutebecause when I picked up the phone, there

the operator a harsh look. “You’re fired. And whoever’s job it was to keepstrangers off this set, you’re fired, too.”Then, to the frightened cast and crew hesaid, “I’ll fire every last one of you if Ihave to. This nonsense has got to stop!”

Nancy watched the producer from thesidelines. He seemed genuinelyconcerned, but what if it was all an act? What if beneath all his theatrics, there wassomething completely different going on,something much more calculated—andsinister?

She noticed Lillian Weiss, too. Lillianwas off in a corner, trying to beinconspicuous, but nothing could hide the

“Okay, everybody,” Luther’s voiceboomed from the director’s booth. “Lunchbreak. And when we come back, let’s tryto get this show back on schedule, shallwe?”

“Calm down, Mattie! You’re not going

to let some practical joker ruin your day,are you?” Rick opened the front door ofthe studio for them, and Mattie, Bess, andNancy filed past him onto the sidewalk.

“Come on,” he added with a grin. “Letme treat you all to lunch—while I’m stillalive, that is.”

“Stop it! Stop pretending everything’sfine!” Mattie turned on him, her green eyes

“Me? Terrified? Don’t be ridiculous.—they can’t kill me. The world needs me!Besides, it’d spoil the ratings if I died.”

“Oh, I could just punch you,” Mattiegrowled. “And I’ll pay for my own lunch, thank you.”

“Whatever you say.” Rick shrugged.“I’ll just have to treat Bess—and Nancy,of course. Right, ladies?”

Bess and Nancy said nothing, embarrassed by the way Rick was tauntingMattie. Nancy started to walk off byherself.

“Hey, look who’s here!” said Rick, hisattention caught by a man at the studiodoor. “It’s the president of the losers’

Nancy stopped and observed thescene at a short distance from the others.“Mattie!” he cried, throwing his armsaround her. “I was bringing some of yournew head shots to the front office and Iheard what happened. It’s absolutelyoutrageous! Are you all right, darling?”

“Oh, I suppose so,” Mattie repliedsoftly, shaking free of his embrace. “Itwas awfully upsetting, but—”

“But nothing,” Dwayne said, interrupting. “You’re in danger, and Iwon’t have it!”

“Keep your shirt on, Casper,” Ricksaid, with a scornful laugh. “This nut is

“Yeah, don’t worry, old buddy. I’ll takecare of Mattie,” Rick said, trying to assurehim.

“Oh, I’m sure you will.” Dwaynesneered. Then he turned to Mattie and tookher by the hand, looking deeply into hereyes. “I want you to promise to call me ifthere’s any more trouble on the set.”

“Oh, Dwayne’s not so bad,” Mattieanswered, watching the man disappear.“Remember, he took me on as a clientwhen nobody else would even give me aninterview.”

“But you’ve come a long way sincethen. You’re a star now. You should havea major agency representing you,” he saidas they started walking to catch up withNancy.

“Mumpfh—” Nancy mumbled, buryingher head under the pillow. Was it reallymorning already?

She and Bess and her aunt Eloise hadhad such a great time the night before. They’d gone to see Soft Shoe, theBroadway musical smash of the season. The show was wonderful, but they’dstopped for a bite to eat afterward. By the

“Our special ‘Soap Opera Weekly’guest today is the star of ‘Danner’sDream’!” the announcer said. “Will heand Serena Livingstone finally tie the knotthis time? Mr. Sex Appeal himself, RickArlen, will be here with us in just a fewminutes! But first—”

The commercial came on, and Nancyrealized there was no way she was goingto get back to sleep. Not with Bessrummaging around the room, tossing oneoutfit after another on the bed and saying

things like, “What do you think, Nancy? The pink or the yellow?”

Pulling herself up onto her elbows,Nancy yawned and looked out thewindow. It was a glorious day outside—warm and sunny. A perfect day for seeingthe sights, she thought happily.

“He’s on! He’s on!” Bess shouted a fewminutes later. Nancy turned from thecloset and saw Rick. He was seatedcasually across from the interviewer, waving and nodding as the audienceclapped and cheered.

Cleverly refusing to give away any ofthe show’s carefully guarded secrets, Rickdid admit that he was considering leavingthe show at the end of the season to star ina movie. The audience groaned, then

interviewer prompted. “Could we behearing wedding bells soon?”

Laughing, Rick made an old joke aboutthe gossip columns having him engaged tothree different girls. “But then, you nevercan tell,” he added slyly, blowing a kiss toa “special lady out there.”

“He means me!” Bess cried happily.“I don’t think so. That’s just talk, Bess.

He could mean anybody—or nobody.”Bess shot her friend an angry scowl,

and Nancy decided to back off. After the interview with Rick, the show

moved on to an update of that network’sdaytime and evening soap operas.’ Besssnapped the TV off then.

“He said he’d be here in an hour. I can’twait!” Bess scooped up her makeup andheaded for the bathroom. “Hey, I wonderwho he’ll bring for you, Nancy. I mean, any friend of Rick’s is probably cute, but Iwonder what he’ll be like.”

An hour later the apartment intercombuzzed, signaling the arrival of Rick andhis limousine.

Bess checked herself in the mirror onelast time. She looked terrific in anoversize cotton cardigan and flowing skirtand flats. “Not bad,” she pronounced.“Come on, Nancy!” With that, she flewdown the steps of the brownstone to thewaiting limousine.

“Not bad at all,” Nancy admitted, looking admiringly at Rick’s limo. The

uniformed driver ushered them into thebackseat, where Rick was waiting.

“Good morning, girls!” he said brightly.“Welcome to my abode on the road.”

The first order of business was to pickup Rick’s friend, a guy named GilbertFrost. “He’s an old pal from actingschool,” Rick explained. “You’ll lovehim.”

Bess threw Nancy a meaningful look, but Nancy just sighed and looked out thewindow. There was no way that she wasgoing to fall for any of Rick Arlen’sfriends—not when she was in love withNed Nickerson. Of course, Ned wouldunderstand her being on this date—shehad to go. Someone’s life was injeopardy.

At the corner of Twenty-third Street andPark Avenue South, she noticed a skinnyguy in jeans and running shoes, leaningagainst a streetlight. He looked totallynormal, except that he was wearing bigblack-rimmed glasses and a false nose.

“What?” Nancy mumbled as the limostopped in front of him. The man sweptdown in a low courtly bow.

“Hey there, Gil!” Rick laughed, openingthe door. “Girls, I’d like you to meetGilbert Frost. Say hello, Gilbert.”

“Hello, Gilbert!” the guy mimicked, sliding into the plush limo.

Bess was giggling uncontrollably, andNancy couldn’t help smiling as Rick’sfriend took off his glasses, revealinganother pair underneath.

Finally, they pulled back into traffic andNancy got a good look at Gilbert. Withouthis getup on, he was pretty cute. He hadglossy black hair and warm brown eyesthat twinkled with laughter.

“Gil is going to be the next host at theComedy Basement,” Rick said. “He doesstand-up.”

“I also do sit up and grow up,” Gilannounced. Everyone groaned.

Throwing a proprietary arm aroundBess’s shoulder, Rick instructed thedriver to take them to Forty-second Streetand the Hudson River.

“Today we’re going to do all thosecorny things you see in old movies aboutNew York,” Rick said. “Like go on a boattrip around Manhattan and to the top of the

Empire State Building. Bess is a very old-fashioned girl,” he explained to his friend.

“Rick Arlen! I am not!” Bess protested.Secretly, though, she was flattered by hisremark.

By the time they got to the West Sidepier, the four of them were relaxed andhaving a great time. Before leaving thelimo, Rick put on sunglasses and an oldhat. That way, most of his face wascovered. “Just normal precautions,” heinsisted. “These go everywhere with me.Otherwise, the fans—well, I’m sure youcan imagine.”

“I think you look adorable like that,”Gilbert said. Rick punched his friendlightly on the arm, and they all piled out ofthe car.

“So, Gil, how did you get involved inshow business?” Nancy asked while theywaited on deck for the cruise to start.

“Oh, now we’re going way back—tothe day little Freddie Gilbert was born inIllinois in a log cabin— No, no, justkidding. How did I get involved in showbusiness, you ask. Thank goodnesssomeone cares besides my mother.”

In spite of his nonstop chatter andputdown humor, Nancy decided she likedGil. He seemed a little lonely, somehow, and afraid to be just himself, but instincttold her he had a good heart.

“You see, my real name is Fred Gilbert.I had to change it after I got to New York. There already was a Fred Gilbert outthere in the show business stratosphere.

Page 120: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

And so Gilbert Frost was born. But he hadthe wrong nose. So I changed that, too.And then I had to darken my hair. By thetime I was finished, the same club ownerswho used to tell me to get lost were dyingto sign me. What can I tell you? It’s acrazy business. Maybe someday I’ll evenmake enough to pay my rent. And if I’mreally lucky, I might even hit it big like oldRick here.”

“I’m sure you will,” Nancy said, looking up.

The view from the boat was spectacular—the skyline sparkled in the noon sun.

But as the boat trip continued and theyfinally circled the northern tip ofManhattan, Nancy couldn’t help feelingthat something was wrong. All through the

ride, she had been keeping an eye on Rick. And she noticed other people werewatching him, too. Nancy saw two womenlook at him, jab each other, and whisper. And a child tugged on his father’s sleeveand pointed toward Rick. A portly manwas also watching him, although hepretended to be looking at something else.

As the boat swung into the final leg ofthe tour, Nancy recognized the portly man.He had been the one cursing Rory Danneron the tour of the set just two days before.

“Attention, ladies and gentlemen. Wewill be docking in a few minutes. Pleasedisembark via the white stairs on the portside of the boat. That’s the left, to all youlandlubbers,” the tour guide instructed.

“That’s him! That’s Rick Arlen!” a

young woman suddenly shrieked. An excited murmur went through the

crowd, and everyone turned to look atRick.

“Take the hat off, Rory! We know it’syou!” a woman called out good-naturedly.The group laughed, and Rick cooperated.

“Ah, my fans.” He smiled and waved.“You’re the greatest—all of you! I loveyou madly!”

“Rick, may I have your autograph?” awoman cried happily. Everyone crowdedaround him and began rifling through theirbags for pens, too.

“Write one for my niece, Rick!”“Oh, Mr. Arlen, thank you!”Rick was standing by the guardrail

signing the backs of envelopes, napkins,

Well, I won’t let you!I’m not going to let filth like you near her! You’re going to die, Rory Danner—rightnow!”

With that, the man lunged for Rick, sending him halfway over the rail. He wasabout to plunge into the river!

Gilbert grabbed him just in time andpulled him safely back over the rail.Nancy felt a pair of hamlike hands on hershoulders. She turned to face the assailantand delivered a swift kick to his left shin. Then she seized his hand and flipped himhead over heels onto the deck. The ship’screw then held him pinned against thedeck until the ship had docked and thepolice arrived, followed by a couple ofreporters.

“Okay, fella, let’s go,” a police officersaid, leading the man to a patrol car.“You’ll feel a lot better after a nice longrest.”

“Sure, sure,” another police officersaid, agreeing. “You can tell the doctor allabout it.”

As their limo pulled out of the parking

lot, the crowd cheered Rick. He wasleaning out the window, smiling andwaving.

“Thank you, everyone!” he called. Heslipped back into the car. “Well, thankgoodness that’s over. And thank you, Gil.And Nancy.” Turning to Bess, he added,“You certainly know how to pick yourfriends, love.”

Gil still seemed a bit shaken. “You

“Let’s just put the whole thing behindus, okay? Now it’s time to celebrate!”Rick grinned devilishly. “Why not go forthe best! Driver—take us to TrumpTower!”

Later, riding up the escalator from the

lobby of the brass-and-marble palace,Bess and Nancy looked around in wonder. The place, was amazing!

“This makes the River Heights malllook like a mom-and-pop store,” Nancywhispered. She looked all around her as

“Tell me about it!” Bess saidenthusiastically. “Rick, I can’t believepeople actually live in this building.”

“They do,” he assured her. “There areapartments here that sell for millions.”

“Seriously?” Bess couldn’t believe it.“What do they have, solid gold faucets?”

“Almost,” Gil replied. “You’d beamazed at what people spend their moneyon.”

“Cappuccino, anyone?” Rick broke incheerfully. They had just come to anattractive cafe on an upper level.

Soon they were all sitting around a tablesipping cups of the strong Italian coffee.

“You know what being here makes me

“I think you’d make a lovely one, too,”Rick said, flirting. “In fact, I sawsomething in a shop across the way that Ithink you should have. Be right back.”

A minute later Rick came back to thetable, holding a silk scarf printed in pastelgeometric shapes. It matched Bess’s outfitperfectly.

“Oh, Rick!” she exclaimed. “It’sbeautiful!”

“Wear it and think of me,” hemurmured.” “So, everyone, are you readyto scale the heights? It’s such a clearbeautiful day—what do you say we catchthe view from the Empire State Building?”

“Sounds great!” Bess was beaming.

Anything Rick said would have soundedgreat to her.

“I used to sell souvenirs at theobservatory,” Gil threw in. “That waswhen I still worked for a living.” Hestraightened up and helped Nancy fromher chair. “Madame?” he said. “Yourchariot awaits. That is, Rick’s chariotawaits,” he said, correcting himself.

By the time they reached Thirty-fourthStreet and made their way up to the top,the sun had slipped much closer to thehorizon. Rick and Bess, their arms aroundeach other’s waists, stood at theobservatory’s edge, gazing into thedistance. Gil had stopped to chat with hisold coworkers at the souvenir shop, soNancy wandered off by herself.

Up that high, the wind cut like a knife, seeming to come from all directions. Itblew Nancy’s hair wildly around her asshe stared down at the magical city. Thenoise from the street sounded like a lowmoan up there, almost human and full ofsadness. It made Nancy shudder for amoment.

As she looked out over the city belowher, she felt a growing sense of dread. Thepolice had arrested the deranged fan thatafternoon, but she was still worried. In thelate afternoon sun, Nancy had a sudden, powerful feeling that someone else wasafter Rick. Someone who was not onlycrazy, but also clever, determined, anddeadly. Nancy felt an icy shiver gothrough her. Someone was waiting down

on the street—she was sure of it—waitingto end Rick Arlen’s life.

Bess scooped up one last mouthful of

chocolate mousse pie and sighedcontentedly. “What a dinner! I’m inheaven.”

“Not bad,” Gil agreed, glancing aroundat the glass walls of Tavern on the Green.Positioned on the edge of Central Park, theview out the windows of the restaurantwas of trees decorated with tiny whitelights. The park looked like an enchantedfairyland, in direct contrast to the cityaround it.

When the check came, Rick picked itup. “What’s money for if not to treatfriends?” he asked, placing a gold credit

“What a day!” Bess remarked happily.“What a night, too! I’ve had such afabulous time today, Rick . . . thanks toyou.”

Rick looked genuinely pleased as hetook her hand in his. “There’s just onemore thing I’d like to do. I could use alittle exercise after this dinner, and it’ssuch a great night—why don’t we take awalk beside the park?”

Bess’s eyes were twinkling withdelight. Rick seemed to be having a hardtime saying good night to her!

“A walk sounds wonderful,” Nancysaid.

“Good, we’re on!” Gil agreed.

Stepping out onto the sidewalk along thepark, Rick and Bess linked arms. Theywere completely caught up in each otheras they giggled and joked, walking aheadof the other two. Nancy watched themcarefully as she half listened to Gil, whowas telling her the rest of his life story.

“Then I realized I had to change mymaterial,” he was saying. “Nobody goesfor rubber-chicken jokes anymore. So Ibegan writing myself a whole newact. . . .”

Nancy couldn’t help worrying aboutBess. She was heading for trouble, Nancywas sure of that. Even if Rick wassincere, how could it last? They livedmiles from each other. And a broken heartwas the last thing Bess needed.

The sound of a speeding car madeNancy spin around. A taxicab jumped itslane and screeched diagonally across thestreet. Suddenly a broken heart was theleast of Bess’s troubles. The out-of-control cab was headed onto the sidewalk, aimed straight at Rick—and Bess!

Chapter Nine “WATCH OUT!” NANCY screamed.

Racing up to pull Bess away from theoncoming taxi, she managed to get justclose enough to grab her friend’s arm asthe taxi swerved onto the sidewalk. Itbarely missed the stunned Bess beforejumping the curb back onto the street andcareening away.

Bess stood absolutely still in the middleof the sidewalk. “Nancy? Am I okay?” sheasked in a dazed voice.

“Your shirt is torn, but I think you’refine.”

Suddenly Bess looked aroundfrantically. “Rick! Where’s Rick?”

“Right here,” he answered. They all

“Don’t tell m-me that was just anaccident,” Gil stammered, running a handnervously through his hair. “He nevereven hit the brakes.”

“He’s right, Rick.” Bess seemed quiteshaken now. “Maybe there’s more thanone crazy fan after you.”

Nancy bit her lip and thought for amoment. This latest incident confirmed herworst fears. She knew now that the crudeattempt on Rick’s life on the boat trip wasjust a sideshow. The main event was stillto come.

Page 137: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

Gil was still shaking. “Well, I don’tknow, about you folks,” he said, “but I’vehad about all the excitement I can take forone day. Next time we get together, Rick, remind me to take out extra insurance.”

“Hey, calm down. It’s the price of lifein the fast lane, that’s all.” Rick laughednervously. “Come on, I’ll give you a lifthome on my way downtown. Bess?”Turning to Bess, he pulled her gently tohim and gave her a lingering kiss.

They walked back to the limo, andNancy and Gil climbed in. Nancy turnedher head away, embarrassed, while Bessand Rick stood on the sidewalk. Theywere whispering, probably about whathad just happened.

Nancy frowned. Things looked bad,

very bad indeed. It was as if Bess hadn’teven noticed that she and Rick had almostbeen killed!

“It’s just a feeling I get, Ned, but it’s a

strong one. Something’s very wrong here.”Nancy flung herself down on the dark bluesofa and filled her boyfriend, NedNickerson, in on everything that hadhappened since she’d arrived in NewYork. “I only wish you weren’t so faraway.” She sighed wistfully.

“Same here,” Ned agreed. “I miss you.”“I miss you, too. And I could really use

your help on this case.”“Can I do anything from here?”“Honestly, I don’t think so. Except share

a little of your wonderful insight. I’m

“Sounds like you need some on-the-scene help. I’d be on the next flight, but Ihave a big paper due. I do want you topromise not to take any unnecessarychances, though.”

“Come on, Ned, you know me. I’malways very careful,” Nancy said, teasinghim.

“Yes, I know. That’s why I want you tokeep a low profile. I want you to be in onepiece the next time I see you.”

Nancy blew a kiss into the phone andsaid goodbye. After she hung up, shesmiled sadly. If only Ned were able tomeet her in New York . . .

Just then, the front doorbell rang. Nancy

“Hiya, kiddo!” the actress said, bubbling. “Eloise told me she was goingto the ballet tonight, so I thought you guysmight want a little company.”

How could anyone as beautiful andsuccessful as Mattie Jensen be all alone atten o’clock on a Saturday night? Nancywondered. It didn’t seem possible. Butthere she was. She’s lonely! Nancyrealized.

“Sure. Come on in,” she said. “Bess isin the shower.”

“Hey, I read about what happened to

“Hmm-hmm,” Nancy replied, wishingshe could have shared Mattie’s sense ofrelief.

“They said the guy was released from amental institution a few weeks ago.”

“I didn’t hear that, but from the way hewas acting . . .” Nancy’s voice trailed off.

“Oh, Nancy, I’m so relieved. Now I’llfinally be able to sleep at night!” Mattiesmiled softly, but Nancy just turned away.“What’s the matter, Nancy? Are you stillupset?”

Nancy heaved an enormous sigh.“Mattie, I hate to say this. I know you’re

not going to like it, but I don’t think theman they arrested today is the personwe’re after.”

“But—but they said he’d been stalkingRick for weeks.”

“He may have been, but I don’t thinkhe’s the one who tampered with the light, and sent the chocolates.”

Mattie gazed at Nancy in amazement. Then she nodded. “Okay. Tell me why youthink it isn’t the same person.”

“Two reasons. For starters, someonetried to run Rick over tonight.”

“No!” Mattie exclaimed.“I’m afraid so. Don’t try to tell Rick that

—he insists it was a hit-and-run accident. But I was there, Mattie. The cab neverblew its horn, never slowed down—and

Mattie was silent, taking it all in. “Andthen,” Nancy said, continuing, “there’s thephotograph of Rick, the one that was allscratched up. It wasn’t just a publicityshot, the kind he might autograph for a fan. There was a résumé of all the shows he’sbeen in stapled to the back of it. Correctme if I’m wrong, but actors don’t just giveout their résumés to the general public, dothey?”

“No, of course not. But lots of peoplewould have them.”

“Like who? A producer?”“Sure. When an actor auditions for a

I suppose even Dwaynemight have a few left, unless he cleanedout his files recently.” Mattie stared at thewall with a faraway look. “But Dwayne isharmless. I’m sure—”

“Wait. Why Dwayne? I thought Ricksaid he was with InternationalManagement.”

“Yes, but when Rick was first in NewYork, Dwayne was his agent. The summerI first met both of them, we were in anacting company doing Shakespeare inOregon. We were so sure of ourselves,”she mused. “Anyway, that fall, we set outfor New York and the ‘big time.’ Rick and

I did all right, but Dwayne, who wastrying to make it as an actor still, ran intotrouble getting parts. He was the wrongtype somehow. So, he decided to open atalent agency instead. He really got ourcareers moving, too.”

Just then Bess stepped into the room, aterry bathrobe wrapped around her. “Ithought I heard somebody! Hi, Mattie,”she chirped. “Did Nancy tell you aboutour day? Kind of wild, huh?”

“I read about part of it in the paper,”Mattie said. “It was—” The telephonerang, interrupting her.

“That’s probably for me!” Bess said asshe dove for the phone. “Oh, hi!” shepurred into the receiver. “Yes, I thoughtyou might— Really? Hmmm—” Suddenly

Bess turned a deep crimson and let out awild giggle. “Umm, just a minute,” shesaid. “I think I’ll take this in the otherroom.”

Carefully putting the receiver on itsside, Bess gestured wildly at Nancy andthen the phone. “It’s Rick!” she whisperedexcitedly. “Hang up for me, okay?” Withthat, she ran into the bedroom.

Nancy turned to Mattie. She was paleand her glamorous face was drawn tight.Staring vacantly toward the bedroom, herenormous eyes began to fill with tears.

Nancy replaced the receiver.“Mattie . . .” she murmured gently, “youstill love him, don’t you?”

Mattie collapsed back into her chair.“Yes, I do. Heaven knows why,” she

Nancy put her hand comfortingly onMattie’s arm. As they listened to Bessgiggling happily in the other room, Nancycould feel Mattie’s grief. If a girl weretalking with Ned like that, she’d becrushed, too.

“But then,” Mattie said with a sadsmile, “Rick obviously doesn’t feel thesame way. Well, I’d better go. I might aswell get some sleep. We’re still havingbrunch tomorrow morning, right?”

Nancy nodded and walked Mattie to thedoor, watching as she went down thestairs to her garden apartment. Just as theactress was about to disappear, Nancy

remembered what she had been thinkingbefore the phone rang.

“Mattie! Wait!” she called. The actress looked up from the

stairwell. “Yes?”“How could I get into Dwayne Casper’s

office? I’d just like to take a look around.”“Well,” said Mattie, her brow

wrinkling as she thought, “I suppose youcould set up an appointment and say youwere an aspiring actress. You could evensay we did a show together once.”

“That might work. I don’t think he evernoticed me before. Whenever I saw him Iwasn’t near you or him. But I don’t haveany pictures or résumés,” she remindedMattie.

“Oh, that’s okay,” Mattie assured her.

“Just tell him you’re new in town. Askhim for advice—he loves that. Dwayne’sreally good with newcomers, and he’ll beflattered that you came to him forguidance. If you call first thing Mondaymorning and say I told you to call, Iguarantee you’ll get in. But I promise you,Dwayne is harmless. I should know—we’ve been friends for years.”

“I hope you’re right. But if Dwayne’sgot anything to do with this, I’ve got tofind out. And, Mattie,” she said softly,“don’t worry about Bess. I know her. Shefalls in and out of love all the time. She’llget over Rick as soon as she gets backhome, you’ll see.”

Mattie stared into the distance, trying tohide her feelings. “Maybe,” she murmured

softly. Giving Nancy a strange look, shedisappeared down the stairwell to herapartment. Nancy could hear her doorclose behind her.

That night, tossing and turning in her

bed, Nancy couldn’t sleep. Her eyes keptpopping open, and she’d lie still and stareat the ceiling while her mind was in highgear and she worked through detail afterdetail. If only they added up.

Rick Arlen. She could picture hishandsome face with that winning grin ofhis, and those sparkling azure eyes.Someone wanted him dead, but who? Rickmight not win any popularity contestsamong the people who knew him best, butonly one person hated him enough to want

such powerful hatred so successfully.Nancy tried to imagine who it might be,but there were so many people wishinghim ill: Pappas, Casper, Lillian Weiss, and who knows how many others therewere just on the set alone. Nancy had hadcases this difficult before, and she’dsolved them successfully. But this timethere were so many possibilities; whichone should she investigate first?

As she drifted to sleep, the shadowyfigure of Rick came back into her mind.He was signing autographs for a crowd offans. A monstrous figure walked towardhim, slowly stalking him. Nancy tried tocry out, but her voice was caught in her

throat. The figure turned toward her, seeing her for the first time. Eyes ofindescribable evil glowed at her, paralyzing her with fear.

Then the figure drew a long and sharpknife that glinted in the dim light. Nancytried to scream, but nothing happened. Theshadowy figure was getting closer andcloser—

Nancy awoke with a gasp and sat up inbed. The clock-radio by her bed read 5:05A.M. It was only a dream, thank goodness!she thought, her heart racing. But it was soreal.

Sighing with relief, she turned over, ready to go back to sleep. That’s when shenoticed that Bess’s bed was empty.

In an instant, Nancy was up and out of

Bess was gone!

Chapter Ten THE SOUND OF a car pulling up in

front of the building sent Nancy to thewindow. Opening it and leaning out, shesaw a shiny black limousine gleaming inthe light of a streetlamp.

A second later Bess stepped out ontothe sidewalk. She was followed by Rick, who wrapped his arm around hershoulder. “You won’t mind if I don’t walkyou to the door, will you?” he asked, justloud enough for Nancy to hear.

Bess twirled around and leaned closerinto his arms. “Of course not,” she said. “Ihad a great time. It was fun, zippingaround the city, just the two of us.Thanks.” They fell into a kiss that seemed

as if it would never end.Standing at the window, Nancy was

alarmed. As flighty as Bess could be, itwasn’t like her to sneak off in the middleof the night. Rick had gone to Bess’s headlike bubbly champagne. Nancy could onlyhope her friend wasn’t in for a nasty“hangover” when it was all over.

“Nancy!” Bess called out in surprisewhen she saw her friend waiting for her atthe door to the apartment. “What are youdoing up?”

“Excuse me,” Nancy answered in a lowvoice, careful not to wake her aunt. “Butwhat are you doing up is the question.”

Bess’s eyes were sparkling. “Oh,Nancy,” she said breathily. “New York iss o wonderful! I’ve never really noticed

before how incredible it is. I just have tolive here someday. Soon.” Turning to herfriend, Bess continued, “We wenteverywhere. We rode around Wall Streetand went to the South Street Seaport andthen to this incredible disco, Le Grandine.Absolutely everyone there knew Rick. And he likes me. I mean, he really likesme! This could be it! This could be theman I’ve been looking for all my life!”

“Bess,” Nancy began as gently as shecould, “didn’t you think it might be just alittle dangerous to be going out with Rickin the middle of the night when someone istrying to kill him?”

Bess looked annoyed. “Don’t spoil thisfor me, okay?” She walked past Nancyinto the apartment and went to their room.

Page 157: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

Nancy glared at her friend as shedisappeared down the hall. Bess could beso irritating sometimes. Earlier that dayshe had narrowly missed getting herselfkilled, and here she was laughing in theface of danger. “You think I’m beingsilly?” Nancy asked, following after her.

“Of course I do! They arrested the guy, didn’t they? Rick convinced me that therunaway cab was only an accident.Besides, nobody would mess with Rick. You should feel his muscles—they’re likesteel!”

Bess slipped out of her satiny dress andkicked off the slingbacks she had worn togo dancing. Too tired to change into anightgown, she fell back on the bed in herlacy pink slip.

Page 158: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

“Oh, Nancy,” she murmured excitedly.“He’s so wonderful—and so cute.”Reaching over, she snapped off the lightbetween their beds. “Am I going to havehappy dreams tonight!”

As Nancy lay in her bed, watching thelight of dawn brighten the room, shecouldn’t help worrying about Bess. Thiswas obviously more than just a schoolgirlcrush. And Nancy was more convincedthan ever that this fairy-tale romance wasnot going to have a happy ending.

The clock by Nancy’s bed read 9:04

A.M. Bess was still asleep, a contentedsmile on her lips. Nancy figured she’d beout for a few more hours.

The apartment was quiet. Looking out

Page 159: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

the window, Nancy saw only one personon the street. The whole city seemed tostill be asleep. At eleven, she’d be goingout to brunch with her aunt and Mattie, butthat was still two hours away.

After pulling on her favorite jeans andslipping her new yellow sweater over herhead, Nancy decided that a walk might bejust what she needed to help her think andunwind.

Stepping out onto the street, Nancy tooka deep breath of the fresh spring air. Thebirds were singing, and the golden-greenleaves on the trees swayed in the morningbreeze. On this quiet Sunday morning, with church bells ringing in the distance,New York seemed like a small nineteenth-century town. Nancy loved it. As she

walked, she imagined she was part of thatolder, simpler time.

After a while she came to a tiny parktucked between two buildings. Themorning sun was just beginning to warmthe benches, and a few people were outwith their children, pushing them onswings and watching as they ran andplayed. Nancy couldn’t help herself; shesat down on a bench and let the sun warmher face, relaxing for the first time in days.

A minute later the touch of a hand on hershoulder made Nancy jump. Glancingaround, she found herself looking into thedark eyes of Lillian Weiss.

“Well, if it isn’t our fair rescuer,”Lillian smirked. “Fancy meeting youhere.”

Page 161: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

Nancy was puzzled. New York was ahuge city. The odds of running intosomeone that she knew were small, to saythe least.

“Mind if I sit down?” Lillian askedcasually. “I’m dead tired. Haven’t sleptall night.”

Nancy moved over to make room forher. She felt uncomfortable in the companyof such an unpleasant person, but shedidn’t want to be impolite.

“Are you still trying to save RickArlen’s life?” Lillian asked suddenly, looking right into Nancy’s eyes.

She certainly is blunt, Nancy thought.Well, I might as well be blunt right back.Whoever was trying to kill Rick alreadyknew that she was on the case. “Still

Page 162: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

trying,” she admitted.“You really shouldn’t bother,” Lillian

said. She looked down at her feet, soNancy couldn’t read her expression.

“I don’t understand,” said Nancy,prompting her.

Lillian looked at her curiously, as if shewere sizing Nancy up. After what seemedan eternity, she fixed her eyes on Nancy.“Rick is going to die, and there’s nothingyou can do about it. And I’ll tell yousomething else—whatever happens tohim, he has coming. He got where he is bystepping on a lot of people, but he madeone mistake. Along the way he stepped onthe wrong person, and he’s going to payfor it.”

Nancy couldn’t believe what she was

Page 163: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

hearing. Was this a confession? Awarning? She wasn’t sure how to takeLillian’s statement.

As suddenly as she had appeared,Lillian stood up to leave. “Well,” shesaid, fingering the hem of her purplelamb’s-wool sweater, “nice running intoyou.” She gazed at Nancy with a tightsmile. “I’ll say one thing for you—you’vegot guts.”

Nancy watched as the strange youngwoman walked, away. She was sure nowthat Lillian had deliberately arranged torun into her. But why? Nancy was more inthe dark than ever.

“The restaurant we’re going to isn’t far

away, Nancy. We’ll just ring for Mattie on

Page 164: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

our way out.” Eloise was standing in frontof the hall mirror, fussing with a teal bluesilk scarf. “Is Bess ready yet?”

“Bess!” Nancy called as she knocked onthe door of the room where her friend laysleeping. “Don’t you want to have brunchwith us?”

The answer was muffled, so Nancyopened the door. “Leave the address,”was all Bess could manage. “I’ll meet youthere.” With that, she flopped over andburied her face in the pillow.

Nancy closed the door. Eloise waitedby the main door of the apartment whileNancy wrote down the address and left iton the telephone table. “Ah, youth,” Eloisesaid, smiling wistfully. “I used to be ableto sleep like that on weekend mornings.

Page 165: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

Now I’m always up at the crack of dawn!”With a wink, Eloise tugged on Nancy’s

arm. “Shall we? If I wait for my morningcoffee much longer, I won’t be worthknowing.”

As they sat in the restaurant eating eggs

Benedict, Nancy couldn’t stop thinking ofher conversation with Lillian Weiss. Thelook in her eyes had been so intense.Could it be that Lillian was the one whowas trying to kill Rick? Or maybe she wasjust hiding the identity of the person whoreally was.

Nancy decided not to mention runninginto her. Still, she had to know whatLillian’s personal situation regarding Rickwas. “Mattie,” she began offhandedly,

Page 166: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

“tell me more about Lillian Weiss. I knowyou said lots of people hate Rick, but sheseems to hate him more than most.”

Mattie looked up, amazed. “You don’tthink she’s behind it all, do you?”

“I don’t really know,” Nancy replied.“But I’d like to know more about her.”

“Lillian’s the one Rick broke up withme for,” Mattie blurted out. She lookeddown at her plate unhappily. “I couldn’tbelieve it when he fold me. I mean, I’dstuck by him through all the bad times. When he finally made it, he just droppedme. It was so—” she paused for amoment, unable to go on “—sohumiliating.” She took out herhandkerchief and blew her nose. SuddenlyMattie laughed. “But that’s Rick for you.

Page 167: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

They were only together for two months. He stuck with her till she introduced himto the film people she knew, then hedumped her. I really can’t blame Lillianfor hating him. I just wish she’d get onwith her life. She’s Just—I don’t know—the kind of person who nurses a grudge. The kind that never lets go of anything, know what I mean?”

“Yes,” said Nancy thoughtfully. “I thinkI do.”

“Oh, do I dare try one of these?” Eloisewas asking with a smile as the waiter heldup a plate of miniature pastries.

“Oh, go ahead, Eloise,” Mattie saidwith a grin, trying to put all thoughts ofRick and Lillian behind her.

Eloise looked at the pastries and thought

for a moment. “Why not?” she quipped, lifting a small one onto her plate.

Just then, the manager came up to thetable. “Excuse me, ladies. Is there aNancy Drew at this table?”

“Why, yes,” Eloise answered, lookingat her niece.

“Ms. Drew, you have a phone call,” themanager said. “You can pick it up at themain desk by the coatrack.”

“It must be Bess,” Eloise guessed. “Sheprobably woke up and realized she’dnever be able to make it here after all.”

Nancy thanked the manager and madeher way to the phone.

“Hi, Bess,” she said into the receiver. But it wasn’t Bess. A raspy electronic

voice warned her, “Stay away from Rick

Arlen, Nancy Drew! And tell your littlefriend she’d better stay away, too!” Withthat, the phone line went dead in Nancy’strembling hand.

Chapter Eleven “BY APPOINTMENT ONLY!” “Put

Your Picture And Résumé Under TheDoor!” “Do Not Ring Buzzer Without AnAppointment!”

Nancy read the signs and gulped.Although she’d called earlier and left amessage on Dwayne’s answering machine,Nancy felt she’d have a better chance ofseeing him if she went in person. Butgetting inside Dwayne Casper’s officewasn’t exactly going to be easy.

With a sigh and a deep breath, shepressed the buzzer. For a moment it wasso quiet that she wondered whetheranybody was in the office at all. Then, crisp footsteps sounded on the other side

Page 171: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

of the door.“Do you have an appointment?”

Dwayne’s voice was all business.“Well, no,” Nancy replied. “Not

exactly.”“In that case, I suggest you learn to

read!”“But, Mr. Casper!” Nancy said in her

most polite voice. “I left a message onyour machine. Mattie Jensen said youwould talk to me. My name is DianeElliot. . . .”

Nancy heard a click as he unlocked thedoor. It swung open, and a smilingDwayne Casper greeted her. “Well, whydidn’t you just say you’re a friend ofMattie’s?” he asked. “Come in! You mustunderstand that if I opened the door to

every struggling actor in this town, I’dnever be able to get any work done.”

“Oh, thank you, Mr. Casper,” Nancysaid, sounding grateful. In the frontreception area was a large empty desk. Noreceptionist, Nancy noted.

“Right this way,” Dwayne said with asugary smile. He led her into his plushoffice. “How do you know Mattie?”

“Oh, well, I was an extra on ‘Danner’sDream,’ and she was kind enough to talkto me. She did say she’d call you aboutme. But I guess she got busy.” That muchwas true Nancy thought.

Dwayne settled into his chair andlooked at her appraisingly. “So you knowLuther Parks too?”

“Well, no. Not personally, that is.”

Page 173: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

“I see. Has Mattie ever seen your work?Apart from extra work, that is.”

Here we go, Nancy thought. Time tostart lying—and lying big. “Oh, yes,” sheassured him. “We did a production of TheSound of Music together in the Midwest.Mattie played the oldest daughter, and Iplayed one of the younger children.”

An amused look passed over Dwayne’sface. “That must have been at least eightyears ago. Mattie wasn’t more than a kidherself, back then. Unfortunately, Icouldn’t see that production.”

I know, Nancy thought. That’s whatMattie told me.

Dwayne leaned back in his swivelchair. He seemed warm now, evenfriendly. “So, let me guess, you’ve come

Page 174: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

to the big city because you want to be areal actress.”

Delighted that the agent had bought, herstory, Nancy threw herself into her real-life acting role. “Yes, sir,” she answeredbreathlessly.

“Well, well, well— What shall we doabout that?” Dwayne pursed his lips, thinking. Then he stood up, walked to thedoor, and locked it. “So we won’t bedisturbed,” he explained.

A sudden chill made its way downNancy’s spine. If the electronic voice onthe phone yesterday had been Dwayne’s,she was now trapped.

“What did you say your name was?”Dwayne had a pen poised over a smallpink index card.

Page 175: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

“Diane Elliot,” Nancy said, looking theagent squarely in the eye. “With two Lsand one T.”

“That’s a good name for an actress. You’re lucky.” He smiled. “Now tell me,Diane, why did you come to me? Thereare hundreds of agents in this city.”

“Well, Mattie spoke so highly of you,Mr. Casper,” Nancy began. Dwayne’sface grew pink with pleasure. “And Iknow you once represented Rick Arlen—”

At the mention of Rick’s name, theagent’s face clouded over. “Ah, yes, theirrepressible Mr. A.”

“He’s not with you anymore, is he?”Nancy was being bolder than she liked tobe, but she had to lead Dwayne on.

“Rick? His real name is Richard

Page 176: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

Aburtuski, by the way. No, he’s no longerone of my clients. I don’t deal withfailures, Ms. Elliot.”

Nancy looked genuinely surprised.Dwayne laughed derisively. “You thinkI’m being ridiculous—after all, he’s at theheight of success! But I can tell you withcertainty that leaving this agency is thebiggest mistake Arlen ever made—exceptfor his decision to be an actor, of course. The man can’t act his way out of a paperbag. He depends on his looks to get himby, but he’ll learn. They all learneventually that the biggest factor insuccess is loyalty. And he has none.”

Dwayne’s face was red with anger. Hewasn’t through on the subject of RickArlen, but just then the buzzer rang.

Page 177: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

“Whoever it is will go away,” he said. “Ihave no appointments scheduled today.”

The buzzer rang through the office onceagain, and then again and again. FinallyDwayne couldn’t stand it anymore. Hebolted from his chair and unlocked thedoor. “I’m going to tell this idiot to goaway. Do you have an appointment?” heyelled, hurrying through the receptionarea. “Because if you don’t, you’d betterlearn to read!”

“But, Mr. Casper! You must see me!”Bess’s voice was muffled through thedoor, but her sense of urgency camethrough loud and clear. “I’m a really greatactress and I need an agent! Let me readfor you, Mr. Casper, and you can judge foryourself!”

Page 178: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

Laughing bitterly, Dwayne calledthrough the door. “Young lady, I’m a verybusy man, and I don’t handle streetperformers. Please leave me alone.”

“But I’m an actress! Just listen.” Bessbegan to recite a passage from Romeo andJuliet.

Good old Bess, Nancy thought with asmile. She really was quite an actresswhen she had to be. They had devised aplan: After Nancy was able to get insideDwayne’s office, Bess would divert hisattention so that Nancy could search it. Assoon as Dwayne was out of sight in thereception area, Nancy began to rummagethrough the papers on his desk. The longerBess was able to divert his attention fromNancy, the more Nancy would be able to

Page 179: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

find out. And from the sound of things,Nancy thought she just might have all day.

“And I sing, too! Just listen to this, Mr.Casper.” Bess launched into a well-known show tune in a loud, off-key voice.

“Please, young woman!” Dwaynebegged. “Why don’t you go sing in thepark or something? You’re giving me aheadache!”

Aha! Nancy’s eyes opened wide as shelooked at the papers in front of her. Aneviction notice—and several large billsfrom creditors. Searching further, shefound warnings from collection agencies, even threats. Dwayne Casper’s talentagency was obviously in desperatetrouble.

“But, Mr. Casper, I’m the next Mattie

Jensen! Everyone says I look just like her, except I’m prettier.”

“What?” Dwayne exploded. “Nobody,b u t nobody, ever was,” is, or will beprettier than Mattie Jensen! Mattie is oneof a kind—absolutely unique!”

Nancy cocked her head to listen. It wasclear to her that, where Mattie wasconcerned, Dwayne’s interest was morethan just professional.

“Well, I’m unique, too, Mr. Casper—terribly unique and incredibly talented!”

“My dear young woman”—Dwaynewas practically screaming now—“if youdon’t leave at once, I’ll call the police. And may I say in parting that with yournerve, you’ll probably go far in thisbusiness!”

Page 181: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

Quickly Nancy put everything back inthe desk exactly where she’d found it.When Dwayne returned, he was tryinghard to calm down.

“I’m sorry. Now, where were webefore that ghastly woman interruptedus?”

Nancy shifted uncomfortably in her seat.Dwayne’s eyes had a wild look in them, and having found what she’d come for, allshe wanted to do was get out as quickly asshe could.

“You know, Mr. Casper, I feel like sucha fool, but I just remembered—I’ve got anappointment with a photographer in fifteenminutes! He’s going to take head shots ofme.”

“Oh, I see,” Dwayne replied, still

Page 182: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

“His name? Uh—” Nancy panicked fora moment. What could she say? Finallyshe blurted out, “Ned Nickerson. He’snew in town—just got in from L.A. ButMattie says he’s good.”

“Hmmm.” Dwayne frowned. “Neverheard of him. Well, Diane, come and seeme when you’ve got your pictures. I’ll seewhat I can do for you.” He extended hishand for her to shake. His grip was firm, like iron, and his eyes searched hersintently.

“Come to think of it, have we metbefore? You look a bit familiar,” Dwaynesaid.

“Well, we’ve never actually met,” she

“That must be it, then,” he said. “You’dbetter get going if you don’t want to belate for your shoot. Look forward toseeing you again, Ms. Elliot.”

“Thank you so much. You’ve been agreat help!” Nancy said and left the office.

on a candy bar and smiling broadly.“How’d I do?” she mumbled, her mouthfull of chocolate.

“Bravo!” Nancy applauded, laughing. “Iespecially loved your rendition of‘Tonight.’ It was—different, verydifferent.”

“You really think so?” asked Bess,

Nancy said, grabbing her friend by thearm. “But we’d better get over to‘Danner’s Dream’ right away. I wantMattie to hear this, too.”

The crisp spring air whirled aroundthem as they walked briskly up Broadwaytoward Columbus Avenue.

“He’s really in bad shape, huh?” Bessasked incredulously after Nancy filled herin.

“Everybody in the world is after him.And when people are that desperate, it canmake them pretty crazy. I want to keep aclose eye on Dwayne Casper, Bess. I thinkhe may be our man.”

Pushing through the glass doors of

Worldwide Broadcasting, Nancy and Bessbeamed at the security guard.

“Hi!” Nancy called out. “We’re backagain.”

“Why, hello, girls. You heard the setwas closed, didn’t you?” the man asked.“They’ve been having a little trouble inthere and Pappas sent down the order. Ican’t let anybody in, not even you two.”

“I know,” Nancy told him. “But couldyou call Mattie Jensen? We just need totalk to her for a few minutes.”

The security guard ran his finger downthe list of telephone extensions on hisdesk. “Sure thing. Mattie, let’s see— Ah!Here it is.”

But before he had a chance to pick upthe intercom, he was interrupted by the

boom of a powerful explosion. The soundof shattering glass tore through the air, followed by a bloodcurdling scream.

“Nancy!” gasped Bess in terror. “Thatwas Rick!”

Chapter Twelve WITHOUT WAITING FOR permission,

Nancy and Bess followed the securityguard backstage. Losing themselves in amob of people, the girls made their waytoward Rick’s dressing room.

The lighting designer had been the firstto reach the room itself. “Call anambulance!” he bellowed frantically.

Nancy and Bess arrived a minute laterand watched in shock as Kay Wills, themakeup artist, staggered down the halltoward them. Her skin was ashen, and shewas trembling all over. Choking backtears, she turned around and sobbed, “It’sbad—really bad.”

Nancy stood on tiptoe and craned her

neck to see inside Rick’s dressing room. The first thing that caught her eye was thewide mirror over the makeup table. It hadbeen shattered into a thousand pieces!

An emergency medical team hadarrived, and they were on their way up thehall now, pushing aside the crowd ofonlookers. “Make room!” Nancy called, flattening herself against the wall.

“Rick! Oh, where is he?” Bess criedfrantically. She bit the back of her hand asshe strained to get a good look. Just then,Rick appeared in the doorway. He had astunned look on his face. His blond hairhad been blown every which way, and thewhite towel around his shoulders wasstained bright red. Looking down, Nancygasped—Rick’s hands were bleeding!

As soon as the paramedics saw him, they broke into a run. Gathering aroundhim, they picked him up and laid him on astretcher. They began pulling slivers ofglass out of his hands as Rick winced inpain.

“Back off, everybody!” one of theparamedics shouted as the crowd began topress in on them again. In what seemedlike just a few seconds, they had finishedtheir immediate task and lifted thestretcher. They carried the wounded stardown the hall, out of the building, and intoa waiting ambulance.

Once Rick was gone, the bystandersmilled around, not knowing what to do.The police arrived and began inspectingthe scene, interviewing people, and

collecting evidence.Nancy walked over to Kay, who was

now sitting on the floor in a corner of thehall. She still looked pale as a ghost.

“What happened, Kay?” Nancy askedgently, crouching down beside her.

“He was w-wiping off h-his cold cream—” Kay stammered, staring off into space.“And the mirror just exploded! Thank Godhe had that towel over his face. He’d beblind—worse, maybe. And I was just onmy way in there—it could have been me,too!”

A few minutes later, while policecombed the area for clues, Pappasassembled the cast and crew.

“Listen up! I have a report from thehospital about Rick.” The excited buzzing

died down as the producer’s voiceboomed out into the vast studio.

“He’s going to be okay. They said itlooked a lot worse than it really was, andthat they’re going to release him tonight. His hands will be bandaged for a while,of course, but we can work around that.I’ve already contacted our writers to comeup with some material that’ll explain hisbandaged hands. If we can’t work this intothe story line somehow, Luther will juststick to closeups. In any case, we’re notgoing to let this shut us down. As far asI’m concerned, you’re all still undercontract, and that includes Rick. I wanteverybody back here tomorrow at sevensharp!”

Just then the police officer who had

been examining Rick’s dressing room letout a long low whistle. “Hey, chief! Lookwhat we found!”

The policeman held up a small metalobject. “It’s a twenty-four-hour timer.Whoever set this up must have done ityesterday.”

Pappas, standing a few feet away, nearly choked. “That’s impossible! Thisset is closed down tight on Sunday. I evenhired extra security. My own mothercouldn’t have gotten in here!”

“Which means,” said the chief, “that itwas probably an inside job.”

Now Nancy finally had a definite lead. She could rule out Dwayne Casper. Hecouldn’t have gotten onto the set to plantthe bomb.

Page 193: Stay Tuned For Danger - The Creative Archivethecreativearchive.weebly.com/uploads/2/4/9/2/24925026/...for ice cream near the airport. “Admit it, Bess,” George Fayne said with a

But that left her with only two othersuspects—Pappas and Lillian. Their facesfloated in front of her tightly shut eyes asshe leaned against the wall, trying toconcentrate amid the confusion.

Nancy shook her head and opened hereyes. She was back at square one with adangerous killer still on the loose rightunder her nose! I’ve got to get put of here, she suddenly realized.

Quickly, Nancy sprang up and elbowedher way through a group of technicianshovering by the studio door. “Come on,”she shouted to Bess. “We’ve got to go!”

Pulling her friend by the arm, Nancymade straight for the front exit. But shestopped short when she saw Lillianstanding directly in front of her, a smug

smile on her face. “I’m way ahead of you,Miss Teen Detective,” she said, smirking.“Way ahead.”

“What’s wrong with her?” Bess wantedto know as they hailed a taxi on thecorner. “She gives me the creeps.”

Nancy didn’t answer. She told the cabdriver the name of the hospital as theypiled in. “And hurry,” she added.

Stepping off the elevator on the fifth

floor, Nancy and Bess had no troublefinding Rick’s room. It was the one withthe two police officers in front of it.

Oh, well, thought Nancy, at least he’ssafe in there. Still, she couldn’t helpfeeling as though she had failed miserably. The police were in on the case now, so

there wasn’t much point in continuing herinvestigation. And besides, she hadn’tmanaged to come up with very much, hadshe?

“Sorry, miss. You can’t go in thisroom,” one of the officers told Bess whenshe tried to enter.

“I must see Rick,” Bess said frantically.“A Miss Jensen’s in there with Mr.

Arlen now.”Bess froze. “Oh. I see—” she finally

managed to say. “Has she been there verylong?”

“Ever since we got here, miss. Abouthalf an hour.” He cracked open the door tolook inside. “Seems like she might beawhile longer, too.”

Bess stepped back, staring anxiously at

the half-open door. Through it, she couldhear Rick’s voice. And it was not thevoice of a confident TV star.

“Mattie! Oh, Mattie, I’m so scared.Someone really is trying to kill me!”

“Don’t worry, my darling,” she repliedin a soft voice. “The police are here. They’ll protect you.”

“You know, Mattie, you were right allalong. You were the only one who saw thetruth. Mattie, if I come out of this messalive, I swear I’m going to makeeverything up to you. I need you, Mattie, Ineed you so badly—no one else evermeant a thing to me. You’re the only oneI’ve ever loved!”

“I’ve heard enough!” Bess turned andran down the hall, covering her mouth

with her hands.“Bess! Bess, wait!” Nancy called after

her.“Leave me alone!” She was fighting

back her tears but losing the battle. “Ican’t believe it,” she sobbed. “I just can’tbelieve it!”

Nancy started to go after Bess butthought better of it. Right then Bess neededto work this out on her own. But Nancywondered about the force of her friend’sreaction. What was it about this guy thatcaused women to fall instantly in lovewith him?

Mattie and Rick had stopped talking, and the police officer silently closed thedoor again. No sense waiting around,Nancy decided.

Out on the sidewalk, Nancy found Bess. Her eyes were brimming over with tears, and her mascara was smeared all over herface. She looked utterly forlorn.

“Come on, Bess. Let’s go home,” Nancysuggested, gently taking her friend’s hand.Bess nodded listlessly, allowing herself tobe led.

The two friends were silent all the wayback to Eloise’s apartment. Looking overat Bess, Nancy wished she could comforther somehow. She knew that Bess reallyhurt. Bess’s brave hero had turned out tobe not so brave after all. And worse thanthat, he was in love with someone else.

As they got out of the cab, Nancy caughtsight of her aunt Eloise entering thebuilding. “Hi, Aunt Eloise,” she called as

she hurried up to greet her.“Hi, Nancy—Bess,” she said as they

entered the building. “Did you have a niceday?”

“You’re never going to believe whathappened today,” Bess said in a softvoice. She had finally gotten control ofherself.

“Well, as soon as we get upstairs, let’skick off our shoes and relax, and you cantell me all about it,” Eloise replied, moving toward the mailboxes.

The three were in the mail alcove whenEloise looked down and spotted a smallbox wrapped in brown paper on thepackage table. She glanced at it andscooped it up. “Nancy, it’s addressed toyou,” she said, noticing it had no stamps.

As she started to hand it to Nancy, shefroze.

get on the house phone and get someone tocall the police.”

While Bess was contacting a neighbor,Nancy and Eloise examined the package.“I think the ticking sounds different now,”Nancy’s aunt said in a frightened whisper. She was still holding the box, but now intrembling hands. “Let’s take it outside.”

Slowly and calmly, the two went out ofthe building and walked to the curb. Assoon as they had stopped and put the boxdown, two police bomb-squad officersarrived. It didn’t take them long todiscover that the box contained anordinary, harmless alarm clock.

“I’ve never been so happy to see analarm clock in my entire life.” Nancy’saunt smiled with relief and clasped herhands together to stop them from shaking.

“Somebody went to a lot of trouble toscare your niece, ma’am. And from thesound of this note, that person is serious.”

“ ‘Last warning, Nancy Drew, leavetown now,’ ” the officer read.

“Nancy, I think maybe we should getback to River Heights today.” Bess hadrejoined them and stood listening as thenote was read.

“Bess is right, Nancy. This is serious.Your father would never forgive me ifanything happened to you while you werehere. Worse, I would never forgivemyself. In fact, after the officers leave, I’m

calling the airport.”Eloise, Nancy, and Bess thanked the

men, and they turned and headed back intothe building and up to Eloise’s apartment.

Nancy bit her lip. “Wait a minute, AuntEloise,” she said, trying to stop her auntfrom calling the airport. She knew her auntwas only trying to protect her, but howcould she leave New York while adangerous killer was still after Rick?Even if he wasn’t the greatest guy in theworld, he didn’t deserve to die. Andobviously, the killer was getting closerand closer. Next time he might succeed.

“Our tickets are for the day aftertomorrow,” she called out as her aunt wasabout to lift the phone. “Maybe I can solvethe case before then.”

“Forget it, Nancy. I’m not going to letyou risk your life—not even for a couplemore days.” Eloise sounded definite.“And besides, the police are on the casenow.”

“She’s probably right, Nancy,” Bessagreed.

“Wait a minute, everybody.” Nancy wasgroping for the right words. “You can’task me to just walk away from this! Aman’s life is in danger!”

They looked back at her withquestioning stares, unconvinced.

“How about this—I promise that if Idon’t come up with any answers bytomorrow, I’ll go straight back to RiverHeights as we planned originally. Buthonestly, I could never live with myself if

I knew I’d walked away when I couldhave helped.”

Eloise looked down at the floor. Nancyhad gotten to her. Bess, despiteeverything, had to smile. Sleuthing was inNancy’s blood.

“All right, Nancy,” Eloise saidreluctantly. “I do have only myself toblame—I did introduce you to Mattie.”

“Thanks, Aunt Eloise,” Nancy criedwarmly, throwing her arms around theolder woman’s shoulders. “You’re apeach, you know that?”

“Some peach. I invite you to New Yorkfor a vacation, and you wind up runningall over town, tracking down a murderer. And getting bomb threats delivered toyour door!”

“He or she is not a murderer—not yet, anyway,” Nancy said. “Nobody’s beenkilled, and I hope we can keep it that way. Now, if you’ll excuse me, there’ssomething I’ve got to take care of rightaway.”

“Who’s there?” came Mattie’s

surprised voice in response to Nancy’sknock.

“It’s me. May I come in?”“Oh, Nancy,” Mattie said when she

opened the door. “Wasn’t it awful?”Mattie looked exhausted. Obviously, shehad just been through quite an ordeal.“Come on in,” she added distractedly.“Sorry the place is such a mess. I just gotback from the hospital.”

“How’s Rick doing?” Nancy asked.“He’s going to be okay. But—oh,

Nancy, his hands! They hurt him terribly. Ijust can’t believe he’s actually going to dothe show tomorrow.”

“What?” she gasped. “Tomorrow?”Nancy was truly amazed—he had

sounded so frightened at the hospital. Ihave to give him a lot of credit, shethought. He really was brave.

“Pappas showed up at the hospital. Hejust burst in past the guards. I was therefor the whole thing. He couldn’t stopapologizing for this and all the other thingsthat have been happening on the set lately. He even promised to hire Rick abodyguard and to get some plainclothesdetectives to be at the studio until this

whole thing is over. But Rick saidsomething about loyalty to his fellowactors, and just shrugged it off and toldPappas he’d be back at work tomorrow. As shaken up as Rick was, he just couldn’tsay no.” She sighed miserably.

“I don’t know how I’m going to getthrough tomorrow,” she said. “I’m soworried about him. Oh, Nancy, what am Igoing to do? If he’s killed, I’ll just—I’ll—oh, I don’t know what I’ll do!” Mattieseemed to be on the brink of hysteria.

“Hold on, Mattie. It’s going to be okay,”said Nancy, trying to comfort her. “I’mstill here, and I’ve got one more day intown. I haven’t given up yet.”

Mattie looked into Nancy’s eyes, and aglimmer of hope showed on her face.

“You—you mean it?”“Mmm-hmm. Maybe I’m not exactly

closer to solving this case, but I sure knowa lot more than when I started. And I’ll domy best for you until it’s time for me toleave,” Nancy assured her. “Please don’tworry.”

But what Nancy didn’t tell Mattie wasthat she was hoping the criminal would tryagain and this time make a mistake—thekind of mistake he or she had managed toavoid until then. Her experience showedthat most criminals tripped themselves upsooner or later.

“Oh, I hope you’re right,” Mattie saidwith a nervous laugh. “I guess I’d betterget you and Bess hired on as extras again, huh?”

When it was all arranged, Mattie wentback to the hospital to get Rick, and Nancywent back upstairs for a quiet dinner withher aunt and Bess.

Just before turning in, she went into theempty living room, picked up the phone, and dialed. She was in luck.

“Twice in one week?” came Ned’sfamiliar voice. “What’s going on, Nancy?Could this be true love?”

Nancy giggled, with a wave of warmfeeling passing over her. Good old Ned.He was just what she needed right then—the voice of sanity. “You know I loveyou,” she said with a laugh. “But thanksfor trying to be funny. I can use a littlehumor right now.”

“Things aren’t going too well there, are

they?”“That’s putting it mildly,” she said, and

told him the latest developments in thecase.

Ned tried to sound comforting. “Look,Nancy, I’ve known you for a long time, right?”

“Forever,” she replied.“And in all that time, I’ve never seen

you blow a case. So just hang in there. You’ll figure it out.”

“But, Ned, I have only one more day!”she protested.

“Something will happen, and the pieceswill all fall into place. You’ll solve thisone, I know you will, Detective Drew.”

“Well, I’m glad somebody thinks so.”She sighed, not really convinced. “I

appreciate the vote of confidence,though.”

“And, Nancy . . .”“Yes, Ned?”“Be careful, okay? I’d hate to have

anything happen to you.” Once again, the girls were slated to play

nurses. Rick’s injuries had been writteninto the script. In the new story line, Rory,in a fit of despair, would try to throwhimself out a window. He would berescued, but not before he had cut hishands to pieces and had to be taken to thehospital.

“Nancy! How do I look?” Bess askedlater that day. Twirling around in hernurse’s uniform, she fluffed her red wig

carefully so the pert white nurse’s capwouldn’t fall off. Her heart didn’t seemhalf as badly broken since she had foundout she’d be working on “Danner’sDream” again that day. She even had a“silent bit”—she was the nurse whowould greet Serena when she arrived atthe hospital.

“I called my mother to make sure she’dtape the program,” Bess said excitedly.“Then I can take it around to castingdirectors and stuff.”

Nancy smiled at her friend. Even in themiddle of all this craziness, she was stillmanaging to have a good time. Of course, her fun was tempered by her feelings forRick. Whenever she saw him on the set,she turned and purposely avoided him.

“Oh, and you know what? I found outthat that lady with glasses and clipboardover there is the casting director,” Besswhispered, pulling Nancy by the arm. “I’mgoing to go hang around her for a while. You never can tell, Nancy, this could beit. And won’t Rick feel like a fool when Ibecome a bigger star than he ever was!”

Nancy sighed and looked at her friend.“Bess, as a friend, I’ve got to tell you this:You are totally insane!” Then pushing herfriend playfully, she whispered, “But gofor it. I hope she notices you. I’ll see youwhen it’s time for our scene, okay? I wantto check out Rick’s new dressing room.”

Rick was dressing and being made up inan improvised area across the hall fromthe costume room. He sat staring listlessly

“So, Rick,” she was saying, trying tocheer him up, “are you going to give me ahand here, or do I have to do this allmyself?”

But Rick didn’t move. He seemed soscared—as though there was a voiceinside his head telling him over and overagain that someone was trying to kill him.And that he or she might very wellsucceed.

Nancy leaned up against a wall andwatched as Kay put some warm water intothe sink. “No mirrors in here, I hopeyou’ve noticed,” she said, trying to make ajoke. When she saw she wasn’t getting

“Okay, here we go,” she said, uncapping it. Then, “Oops!” she cried asthe stick slipped out of her hands and fellinto the wet sink.

“Clumsy me,” she said to herself, shaking her head. Suddenly, there was ahissing noise. The water in the sink beganbubbling furiously.

“What the—?” Rick gasped. A sharpodor rose from the sink.

Nancy recognized the smell. “That’sacid,” she whispered.

“Oh, my God!” Kay cried, her hands onher cheeks as she watched the acid eatholes in the stainless steel sink. “Rick, thatcould have been your face!”

had it!” He tried to pick up his suedejacket, but even a simple action such asthis was difficult because of the bandageson his hands. Growling with disgust, hestormed out of the room.

“Rick?” Kay called, following himdown the corridor. “Where are yougoing?”

“Forget it, Kay. I’m taking a nice longwalk and going someplace where nobodycan find me.”

Just at that moment, a beet-facedWilliam Pappas stepped into the hallway.“What’s going on here?” he asked as thehandsome actor flew down the hall.

“But you’re under contract, Arlen! Youcan’t just leave!”

“Oh, yeah? Watch me.” With that, Rickpushed past the angry producer and madehis way toward the entrance.

Pappas made a lunge for him, but acouple of crew members restrained him.

“Come on, Mr. Pappas, calm down,”they urged him. “Give him a break. Theguy’s been under a lot of stress lately.”

Pappas let the men straighten his suit ashe muttered under his breath, “He’s undertension? What am I—chopped liver? I’mbehind schedule, and the network isbreathing down my back. I have ratings tothink of!”

But it was too late. Rick was out thedoor and gone. Nancy and Kay looked onas the producer fumed, powerless to stophim.

Seconds later Luther Parks hurried up tothem, running a hand nervously through hissilver hair. “Bill, someone just said RickArlen left! What do you want me to do?”

But Pappas was in no mood for creativesolutions. “You’re the director,” hesnarled, heading back to his office. “Thinkof something!”

Luther shrugged and turned to Lillian, who was standing beside him. “We’llshoot the hospital scene with Mattie,” hesaid.

“Whatever you say,” Lillian drawled, throwing a wink Nancy’s way. “Report to

Standing in the make-believe operatingroom as the crew adjusted the lights,Nancy’s spirits sank. Rick was out on thestreet somewhere, unprotected. And thereshe was on her last day in town, about towalk around in the background of afictional scene instead of tracking down avery real criminal.

Someone had found a way to get aroundthe set undetected, again and again. Thatwas the key. In spite of guards at thedoors, and people everywhere, Rick’senemy had gotten in. If she only knewhow! If she could only discover themethod behind the madness, she felt surethe rest would fall into place. But how

could she do anything now?“Action!” came Lillian’s voice. Taking

her medicine tray, Nancy crossed the set,put the tray down, and walked back again, heaving a deep sigh.

Action. That’s exactly what wasneeded. If only there was some action shecould take!

“Cheer up, Nancy.” Bess peered

sympathetically into the mirror at herfriend’s reflection. Nancy wasn’t used tolosing and it hurt. Bess pulled a combthrough her blond hair and twisted it up inone deft move. She fastened it in place, and searched for something comforting tosay. “I know it’s a bummer, but you winsome and you lose some.” Somehow those

weren’t the words she had been lookingfor.

“Well, I don’t really feel like going outto dinner, that’s for sure,” Nancy repliedlistlessly. She reached for her makeupcase on the bathroom counter.

“But we’re going to a really greatrestaurant! Your aunt, Eloise, said it’s oneof her favorites. And I can’t wait to tellher about my big scene today. Thevideotape editor told me he was sure I gotinto the shot. Can you imagine? There Iam, actually handing a paper to MattieJensen on national TV! My mother willflip!”

Nancy lifted the collar of her mauvejacket and fastened a rhinestone pin to thelapel. “There’s just so little time left and

so many unanswered questions.”Suddenly the door buzzer rang. “Come

on, Nancy. That’s the signal. Your auntand the cab are waiting!” Bess cried. “Beright down!” she called into the intercom.

At the restaurant the girls were seated

by a lovely young hostess, who lookedmore like a model than a restaurantemployee.

“Pierre will be your waiter,” she toldthem.

Just then, a young man with twinklingeyes and a handlebar mustacheapproached the table.

“Bonsoir. Je m’appelle Pierre. Here Ihaf ze menu,” he said in a thick Frenchaccent. Bess couldn’t help giggling as he

handed the menus around the table, givingeach of them a seductive look. “I can tellzees table will be my favorite of ze night.”

“I didn’t know this place served Frenchfood,” Eloise mused out loud, watchinghim go.

“It doesn’t,” Bess remarked in surpriseas she looked over the menu. “A Frenchwaiter at an American restaurant. That’sweird.”

“Not for New York it’s not,” Nancy’saunt replied.

Nancy’s eyes followed the waiter to thebar, where he put in an order for someother customers. “Hey, Steve,” he yelledin a regular voice, “give me three mineralwaters and a Coke.”

Nancy looked up when the waiter

“Huh?” he asked, confused. “Want torun that by me again, lady?”

“You’re not French?” Bess exclaimed.“Mais non, mademoiselle,” the waiter

admitted with a shy smile. “I mean, nope.Never even seen the place.”

“I’ll bet I know what’s going on,”Eloise ventured. “You’re an actor, aren’tyou?”

The waiter looked at Eloise for asecond and then laughed. “Okay, okay. Iconfess. I’m guilty. I am an actor, butplease don’t be mad.”

With that, he tugged on the end of hismustache and pulled it off. “I have an

audition for the part of a French waitertomorrow, so I thought I’d get in a littlepractice tonight. Now, ladies, what can Iget you?” He proceeded to take theirorders and then left.

“Does that happen a lot around here?”Bess asked.

Eloise smiled and shook her head no.“But many of the waiters in New York areactors, Bess. And a lot of the deliverypeople, word processors, dog walkers . . .They do many different kinds of work justto survive between acting jobs.”

Bess was sobered by the thought that anacting career could be so difficult. ButEloise’s words also had a great impact onNancy.

“Playing different roles,” she murmured

softly to herself. Suddenly a big piece ofthe puzzle had fallen into place. That’show the culprit does it, she told herself.Hadn’t she herself gone anywhere on theset completely unnoticed in her nurse’suniform? No one had even looked at hertwice. Of course! How could she havemissed it?

“And when the director called ‘action’ Iwas supposed to be sorting these papers atthe front desk,” Bess was telling Eloise.“And Mattie walks right up to me andsays, ‘Excuse me. Did Rory Danner leavea message for me?’ And I nod and I handher an envelope. We must have done thescene six times, right, Nancy?” Bessdidn’t wait for an answer. She just wenton, filling Eloise in on every little detail

of her big day on “Danner’s Dream.”Nancy ate her dinner in silence, trying toput the final pieces of the puzzle together.

“I’m stuffed,” Bess said as they climbed

the stairs to Nancy’s aunt’s apartment.“That dessert was too much.”

“After you girls leave, I’m going tohave to go on a diet,” Eloise said, reaching into her bag for the keys.

Just then, through the door they heardthe phone ring. “Don’t worry—themachine will get it,” Eloise said, lettingthem in and flicking the lights on.

“Hello,” came Eloise’s recorded voiceon the answering machine. “I can’t cometo the phone right now, but if you leave amessage at the sound of the beep, I’ll get

shiver ran down Nancy’s spine. It was thevoice of Lillian Weiss. “It’s Lillian,Nancy. There’s something I have to tellyou. It’s a matter of life and death. Meetme on the set tomorrow morning at sixo’clock, before rehearsal. I’ll leave a passfor you.”

Chapter Fifteen “NANCY, YOU’RE NOT thinking of

going, are you?” The color drained fromEloise’s face, and she sat down on thesofa. “You told me yourself that youthought this woman might be the killer. Ican’t allow you to put your life in dangerthat way, even to save someone else’s.You’re my niece, and you’re the onlychild my brother has. Think how he wouldfeel if something happened to you!”

Nancy sat down beside her aunt andtook her hand. “Aunt Eloise,” she saidcalmly, “ever since I was a little girl, I’vebeen trying to solve mysteries. I can’t quitnow! It’s my life, Aunt Eloise. It’s what Ido best. Don’t ask me to give it up now,

please.”Tears in her eyes, Eloise hugged her

niece fiercely. “I’ll be biting my nails thewhole time, you know that?” she said witha resigned laugh. “But why do you have tomeet at the studio?”

“Oh, you know how dramatic soappeople are. Just a little added mystery. Now, come on, there’s nothing to worryabout,” Nancy countered with a smile.“And besides, I know quite a lot of karate, remember? All those lessons ought to begood for something.”

When she got to Worldwide

Broadcasting, Nancy picked up her pass atthe security desk, then slipped into themain corridor. Every muscle in her body

was tensed. There was something wrongabout all this—she knew it the moment shehad heard Lillian’s voice. But somethingdrove her on, step by step, toward thestudio.

As she turned down a corridor, she sawsomeone and ducked back around thecorner. It was the janitor, mopping thefloors. Not wanting to run into anyone, shewent back around, taking the long way tothe studio in order to avoid him.

Finally, she reached the vacuum-sealeddoor and pushed her way in. The set wasdimly lit, but Nancy’s eyes adjusted to thedarkness. At first it seemed to be deserted, but then Nancy saw her.

Lillian was sitting oh a chair on the setof the Danner kitchen, holding her head in

her hands. As Nancy approached, sheturned around.

“Our fair rescuer,” she said, under herbreath. “How kind of you to come.” Thewords were full of, bravado, but the oldself-assured Lillian was gone. Themocking look had disappeared, andLillian’s face was now fearful.

“Why did you ask me to come here?”Nancy demanded. “What’s all this about?”

“Oh, I’m not the maniac, if that’s whatyou’re worried about. In fact, I asked youhere because—” Lillian’s voice wavered.“Because he’s after me now.”

Nancy crossed the room and sat downnext to Lillian. Then she listened intentlyto every word of her story.

“When things started turning weird

around here, I got curious. Actually, I waskind of hoping Rick would get what hedeserved, if you get my meaning. But thenI found something. It was that day I raninto you in the hall. I had just found it in acloset. I didn’t want to tell anyone aboutit, so I hid it where no one would comeacross it.”

“The prop room, of course!” Nancy’seyes lit up. So that was why Lillian hadacted so secretively that day!

“Right. And this little item I found mademe want to find out more. So I did. I kepton finding more and more, until—”Lillian’s voice was barely a whisper.“Until I got this yesterday.” She handedNancy a typewritten note. “Were youthinking of blackmail, my pet?” it read.

“Not if I kill you first.”“So you see,” Lillian went on, “that’s

why I called you here. In case anythinghappens to me. I mean, I knew you wereon the case, and, well, you understand.”She picked up a shopping bag that lay ather feet and, taking something out of it, sheheld it up for Nancy to look at.

“A long-haired wig, glasses, a T-shirt—” Nancy sifted through the contents, hersuspicions confirmed. “It looks like adisguise. Whoever it was used it to getaround the set unnoticed.”

“Exactly,” Lillian agreed. “And whatbetter disguise than as a stagehand? Oneof those anonymous people walkingaround during every shoot. Everyone elseis so busy doing their work, no one

notices. It’s perfect!”“What else did you find?” Nancy asked.“Oh, more of the same. Different every

day. I knew immediately that it was anactor. Or an ex-actor—”

Then I was right! Nancy said to herself.“You see,” Lillian went on, “I finally

put two and two together. Which, I hate tosay, is more than you’ve done.”

“I take it you have proof of the maniac’sidentity, then,” Nancy said.

“Of course I do,” she said with awicked smile. “It is—”

Lillian didn’t get a chance to finish hersentence. All of a sudden, every light inthe entire studio flashed on. Shading hereyes, Nancy glanced up to the director’sbooth, where the lighting controls were.

There, looking down at them frombehind the thick Plexiglas, was DwayneCasper! His expression was furious, andin his hand was a gun—pointed straight atNancy!

Chapter Sixteen “WELL, HELLO, YOU two!”

Dwayne’s voice boomed at them, seemingto come from every imaginable direction. He let out a monstrous laugh. “I onlyfollowed Lillian, but I’ve trapped both ofyou. How lucky! Congratulations, yourdeath scenes will look so lovely onvideotape. A videotape for my personalviewing pleasure only!”

For an instant, Dwayne relaxed his gripon the gun a bit. Nancy, seeing her chance, made a dash for the door. Just as shereached it, she heard it go whooossshh, and the red light above it flashed on. Thedoor was locked—vacuum sealed.

“Are we locked up down there?”

Dwayne screamed in a grotesque parodyof Luther Parks. He laughed again. “Alittle stage fright, Ms. Elliot? Actually, Ididn’t know until yesterday that you andMs. Elliot were one and the same. Verygood bit of acting. Very realistic. You see,we strive for realism here—real bullets, real blood, real death.” He waved his gunplayfully at them.

“You two are only the first act. RickArlen’s death will be the climax of mylittle soap opera. He’s gotten away fromme so far, thanks to you, Nancy Drew. Butwith you two little nuisances out of theway, I don’t think he has much of achance. Do you?”

Dwayne paused, waiting for a reply.Nancy had to think fast. This might be her

only chance to save her life and Lillian’s.Somehow she had to distract him, makehim forget he had a gun.

“Dwayne, why? Why do you hate Rickso much? Lillian and Mattie have morereason to hate him than you do!”

Her words seemed to ignite Dwayne’sfury. He exploded at her, just as he had atBess that day in his office.

“More reason than I? What do you knowabout it? Keep your ignorant little mouthshut! Rick Arlen has to die, and I’ll tellyou why. Because he killed me, that’swhy. He killed Dwayne Casper.”

Dwayne paused for breath. Nancy hadthe feeling Dwayne’s story was a longone. That was good. She needed time—time to think of a way out.

“I was an actor,” Dwayne cried, all thehurt and rage in him pouring out with hisstory. “I’d studied every aspect of mycraft and was a master of Shakespeare, dialects, stage combat—everything. I wasunderrated and underappreciated—butbrilliant. Then I met Mattie.

“We fell in love, and I was the happiestman on earth. Then—then came August. We did Romeo and Juliet. Mattie wasJuliet, but Rick beat me out for the role ofRomeo. The director was a sucker for apretty face, and so, I soon found out, wasMattie.

“From that moment on, my life wasnever the same. And I never forgot whathe had done to me.”

As Dwayne ranted on, Nancy looked

“I made them stars. I did it all. And howdid Rick pay me back? By leaving me,that’s how. I got nothing in return for allmy hard work—nothing at all. He haddestroyed me again.

“Once Rick left, other clients began toleave. All I had left was Mattie. And then—” Dwayne paused, and his expressiongrew dark with rage. “Then he startedluring Mattie away from me. That’s when

I decided to kill him. Which brings meback—” he raised the gun at Nancy, looking down at them “—to you twoladies.”

“Dwayne!” Nancy shouted, shaking himout of his daze. “Your story sounds like asoap opera. That stuff doesn’t happen inreal life!”

“That shows what you know about life,Nancy Drew,” Dwayne rasped into themike.” “Real life is a soap opera. You’lllearn that. Or rather, you would have, hadyou lived.”

“Rick didn’t kill you,” Nancy insisted.“You’re still—”

Dwayne erupted again. “Enough!” hescreamed. “It’s time for the final closeup.I’m going to write you two out of the

script forever.”Quickly, he disappeared from sight.

Nancy guessed that he was on his waydown to the set. That only gave her a fewseconds to think of something.

Nancy looked frantically around. Lillianwas standing, shocked, unable to help inany way. She was frozen with fear. Asclever as she had been in figuring out whothe criminal was, she was utterly uselessright then.

In the few seconds she had left, Nancyscanned the set, looking for something—anything. Then, she saw it.

Over in the corner stood a large metalcylinder. On it were written the words“Smoke Machine.” Rushing over to it,Nancy found the control switch and turned

Seemingly from nowhere, Dwayneappeared.

“Ah, there you are, my nosy little friend.Would you care to rejoin Ms. Weissonstage?”

Nancy moved slowly back to the kitchenarea, hoping that her plan would work.

“What’s that hissing?” Dwayne turnedand looked around nervously, but all hecould see was the nearer half of thestudio. The rest was hidden by a thickwhite fog, which was made even worse bythe spotlights.

Quickly, while his back was turned,Nancy grabbed Lillian by the arm andpulled her into the protection of the fog.

By the time Dwayne realized what washappening and turned around again, theywere gone!

Dwayne cursed loudly as Nancydragged Lillian into a foggy corner on theset. She left Lillian there and began towalk toward the sound of Dwayne’svoice. She had to get the jump on him frombehind.

Then she heard a sound that made herheart sink. It was the sound of a giant fan—the wind machine.

“Very clever, Nancy Drew,” cameDwayne’s voice through the diminishingfog. “But there’s an antidote for everypoison, or vice versa.”

The fog was now down to a very smallarea, and Nancy knew that her time was

Rearing back, Nancy flung herselfthrough the air at Dwayne. At the lastmoment, he turned and saw her. The twoof them fell together, toppling over eachother, and Dwayne’s gun emptied itself.

“THOSE WERE GUNSHOTS comingfrom the set!”

“Quick, this way!”When the police raced onto the set they

found Dwayne Casper flat on the floor. Ontop of him was Nancy Drew, holding hisarms in a double hammerlock.

“His gun is on the floor over there,” shetold the police breathlessly as theyrelieved her of her burden.

“Nancy!” Eloise exclaimed, rushingover to her.

“I’m fine, really, Aunt Eloise.”“Well, all the karate lessons in the

world wouldn’t have helped if this bullethad come any closer!” Eloise poked at the

Nancy looked down at the hole, herheart skipping a beat. “Please, don’t tellDad,” she begged. “And I promise I’ll bemore careful from now on.”

Throwing her arms around her niece,Eloise sighed. “Oh, Nancy, I’m just gladyou’re alive!”

Bess rushed up to them and threw herarms over theirs in a three-way hug.“Thank goodness, you’re all right!” shecried. “When we heard the shots—” Shecouldn’t go on.

The police had handcuffed Dwayne, who stood there passively, a dull look inhis eye.

“Do you know how close I was to

“Tell your story to the sergeant, buddy,”the police officer said. “Ms. Drew, I’llneed to get a statement from you and fromMs. Weiss. Would you see that she makesit down to the station house?”

“Of course,” Nancy agreed. In all thecommotion, she hadn’t even given athought to Lillian. Apparently, the frighthad been a bit too much for her—she’dfainted.

“I had to call the police, Nancy,” Eloise

At the door, Dwayne spun aroundsuddenly. “Rick Arlen was going to die.He should have died! And I would havekilled him if it hadn’t been for you, NancyDrew!”

“Whew.” Bess sighed as the officerpushed Dwayne outside. “He’s crazy—”

“He’s in the right hands now,” Nancyadded soberly. “And not a moment toosoon, either.”

“Flight four-seventeen will be boarding

at gate three in five minutes.”“That’s our flight, Aunt Eloise,” said

Nancy, putting down her luggage so shecould give her aunt a hug.

But when Nancy and Bess turned to go,they heard their names being called out.

“Nancy! Bess, wait!” A familiar voicefloated down the airport corridor. Turningaround, Nancy saw a radiant MattieJensen running toward them, her auburncurls flying around her face. “We couldn’tlet you leave without saying goodbye,”she cried.

Beside her, Rick Arlen was cradlingtwo large bouquets of roses in his arms.He handed the first to Nancy and said,“Thank you for saving my life, Nancy—I

Then he turned to Bess, who seemedmore than a little flustered. “This one isfor you, love,” he murmured, giving herthe flowers.

“Oh, Rick, thank you,” she cried, lettingdown her guard. For a minute, Nancyalmost felt sorry that she had been thinkingof him as such a heel. She was sure theflowers were his way of saying he wassorry for toying with Bess’s emotions.

But the hopeful light went out of hereyes when he explained, “They’re fromPappas. He asked us to give them to you.”

“Pappas sent us flowers?” asked Nancyincredulously.

“And Pappas rehired everyone that hefired,” Mattie added. “All thanks to you,Nancy.”

Nancy’s eyes twinkled. Nothing beat thewonderful feeling she always had aftersolving a case. “I’m glad I could be ofsome help,” was all she could say.

“But the best news of all is—” Rickflashed Mattie a million-dollar smile.

Nancy noticed that Rick avoided Bess’seyes as he spoke. “Well,” Nancy said,“that’s great news, you two.Congratulations.” Looking over at herfriend, Nancy could tell that Bess wishedshe were in Mattie’s shoes. “Well, we’dbetter get going, though,” Nancy said.“See you next time we’re in New York!”
