A STUDENTS GUIDE
He waka eke noaWe are all in this together
To get the best out of your learning, we have put together a guide to “staying connected at
Hamilton Girls’ High School”.
With the COVID-19 pandemic in full swing, what does this mean for you... the learner?
• More independent work than may previously have ever been expected of you.
• Your success will depend on how effective you are at planning ahead and managing your tasks and time.
• How do I keep it together while stuck at home?
• What platforms will we be using at HGHS?
• How can I connect and collaborate with my peers and teachers?
Introduction

STUDENT LEARNING INFORMATION3
STANDARDS FOR ONLINE LESSONS: • Prepare by reading the activities outlined for the week on Schoology
• Make a schedule for conferences and work deadlines.
• Set up your learning space with device, pen, paper etc.
• Be on time, quiet and ready to participate
• Ensure that your technology works correctly before the conference starts
• Communicate your challenges or questions to your teacher appropriately
• Follow your teachers’ expectations for the conference
STUDENT ONLINE CONFERENCING ETIQUETTE:• Dressed appropriately (e.g. no pyjamas)
• Sitting appropriately, set up for learning (as in class)
• Having equipment ready e.g. notebook, pens where necessary
• Informing others in your household when you are joining a conference to avoid disruption
• Phones should not be used while engaging in conferences (unless permitted)
BEHAVIOUR AND EXPECTATIONS FOR YOUR CONFERENCES: Online classrooms have the same standards and expectations as a classroom. Attendance to online learning is generally compulsory. If you have issues, let your teacher know by email. Try to figure out some solutions like using a notebook to complete the work.
Students who are not behaving appropriately may be asked to leave the conference. Follow up from the teacher will occur via email or a phone call to parents/caregivers. If the behaviour continues or escalates then you will be moved into a disciplinary matter via Dean/HOS/SMT as per regular processes. At all times contact will be made to your parents/caregivers.
RESPECT EVERYONE: Our virtual classrooms should be a safe space for all of our students and staff. Consider your classmates’ and teacher’s time, privacy and wellbeing when interacting. Respect ideas, discussion and people as you would in your classroom. You should not be filming, taking photos, muting or blocking others. If you are having any issues, let your teacher know.
OFFENSIVE LANGUAGE: Any offensive or rude language is not acceptable at any stage. If this occurs then the teacher will deal with it in the first instance and it will have consequences. Contact with your parents/ caregivers will be made and will be forwarded to your Dean/HOS.

These words remind us that procrastination and dis-organisation are age-old enemies and if we are to learn effectively, we must learn to overcome them
• Breaking your time up into small pieces helps your organisation and concentration.
• Keep to your school timetable during term time.
• Communicate with your teachers during the school day via Schoology discussion groups or updates (try not to clutter email inboxes).
• Write out what you want to get done that day/week and put it somewhere you can see. Cross off things you finish, this gives you a sense of accomplishment.

#4Tip
Engage, Build and Consolidate
which techniques help you to learn?
ENGAGE IN THE LEARNING listen, read your course notes, make summary notes, ask questions, find ways to make the learning meaningful
FORM a PEER STUDY GROUP - it is a great way of keeping the motivation going.
BUILD ON YOUR KNOWLEDGE Discuss your knowledge with others to learn new things - on Schoology, messenger, shared google docs etc.
DON’T just be a bystander - join the online conversation
Research further with recommended websites:
there are many websites that can help you - contact your teacher and they may be able to help you.
CONSOLIDATE YOUR LEARNING Write out your notes in a way that YOU understand it. You could use colours, stickies and pictures. Access youtube for help.
Revision Keep revising what you are learning throughout the week so that you don’t forget it. Go over your notes more than once.
Check your understanding by explaining it to someone who would be willing to listen and collaborate (at home or video conferencing) - teach part of what you have learnt to others and make notes. Ensure they ask you 3 questions (if not more),

#5Tip
Look after yourself
• Physical activity - set some physical activities to your daily schedule. Exercise Routines HERE (courtesy of Mrs McCarthy). Use Youtube for Yoga routines etc.
• Beauty treats - if you’re able to add mani’s and/or pedi’s to your week. These ‘feel good’ treats/activities will ‘pick you up’
• Virtual coffee/hot chocolate dates - set time aside to connect with friends socially like you would at a cafe. Use messenger, Google meets, zoom, facetime to have a ‘virtual’ date.
• Keep a personal journal or diary of your thoughts and feelings - living with the same people for a long time may be challenging for some. It is a place to provide you with opportunities to think about challenges you may have and how they make you feel. This will be a platform for you to collate your thoughts and to share with a friend or a teacher you feel comfortable sharing with. One of our amazing teachers’ Ms Powell, has designed a wellness journal for her class - you may find it helpful.
• Hobbies - You’ve now got the time to invest in the things you love! Try one of these each day. E.g - reading, baking, building, painting designing, learning Te Reo Maori. There are stacks of ‘How to’ youtube clips to help you upskill.
• Sleep schedule - Go to sleep at a reasonable time and keep a constant routine so that you are able to focus during the day.
• Social media and News updates - Schedule a time to do that. Turn off notifications. Stay in your BUBBLE of school work and study for the time you have allowed in your schedule.
• Mindfulness activities - breathing exercises - meditation
• Gratitude - Recognise things to be grateful for. Wake up each morning and write down 5 things that you are grateful or thankful for. FOCUS on the POSITIVE.
