Staying Married

… IS NOT MAINLY ABOUT STAYING IN LOVE

Page 2: Staying married

Genesis 2:18-25

18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” 19 Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. 21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man.

23 Then the man said,

“This at last is bone of my bones

and flesh of my flesh;

she shall be called Woman,

because she was taken out of Man.”

24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

1. MARRIAGE IS GOD’S DOING

a) Marriage was God’s Design

“God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.’” (Genesis 1:27-28)

“It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” (v. 18)

“So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman.” (vv. 21-22)

“They shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.” (vv. 24-25)

b) God Gave Away the First Bride

“And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man.” (Genesis 2:22)

c) God Spoke the Design of Marriage Into Existence

“Jesus answered, ‘Have you not read that he [God] who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said [Note: God said!], “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”’?” (Matthew 19:4-5)

d) God Performs the One-Flesh Union

“ ‘The two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” (Mark 10:8-9)

2. MARRIAGE IS FOR GOD’S GLORYThe ultimate thing to see in the Bible about marriage is that it exists for God’s glory. Most foundationally, marriage is the doing of God. Most ultimately marriage is the display of God.

The Mystery of Marriage RevealedGenesis 2:24 – “hold fast to his wife;” “they shall become one flesh”

Marriage is a sacred covenant rooted in covenant commitments that stand against every storm “as long as we both shall live.”

Page 11: Staying married

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.

“This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.”

(Ephesians 5:31-31)

Marriage is patterned after Christ’s covenant relationship to his redeemed people, the church. And therefore, the highest meaning and the most ultimate purpose of marriage is to put the covenant relationship of Christ and his church on display. That is why marriage exists. If you are married, that is why you are married.

Christ Will Never Leave His Wife

“Till death do us part,” “As long as we both shall live”

What makes divorce and remarriage so horrific in God’s eyes is not merely that it involves covenant-breaking to the spouse, but that it involves misrepresenting Christ and his covenant.

“I am with you…to the end of the age…I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Matthew 28:20; Hebrews 13:5)
