STEAM, Literacy, Music & Movement Integration
Debby Mitchell, Ed.D.
In this Session:
Majority of session is movement-based to experience meaningful movement or movement with intention that will give positive learning outcomes
• Use of Movement Chart to improve academics• STEAM• Literacy • Importance of the integration of movement, music, and learning
• I have taught school for over 35 years from science, health, to physical education.
• I began teaching at the University of Central Florida in 1987. I left public schools because I wanted to reach more people and felt by teaching teachers I would have more impact. I have helped train over 800 pre-service physical educators.
• I retired as Coordinator of Sports and Fitness – with one undergraduate degree with 5 specializations, 3 minor’s, a graduate degree with 2 specializations, and all the activity classes at UCF.
• I founded GeoMotion, Inc. in 2002 for the same reason – to reach more people and show them that physical activity can be fun! Through GeoMotion, I have trained over 3,000 educators.

Let me find out more about you –Please stand if something applies to you
• Parent• You are a classroom teacher• Grandparent• You work with PK – 2nd grades• You work with 3rd – 5th grades• You work with middle or high school grades• You are an administrator• You like to dance• You work in higher education
Introduction
• You are from or have visited another country• You were active in a sport in school• You played an instrument • Watch less than 15 hours a week of Television• Physically Active (5 times a week – 60 Min.)
• How many of you feel that healthy, active children have a better chance for school success?
• How many of you feel that healthy, active people have a better chance for life success?
*FYI - By moving and standing you just engaged your brain!
Introduction
• How do you know someone is engaged in learning?
• Individuals need to move approximately every 10 to 17 minutes or they loose focus (Jean Blaydes-Madigan)
• Children need to move more often –they have shorter attention spans – approximately 1 minute for each year of age
• SO – We will have many brain breaks throughouttoday’s presentation!
Engage Your Brain

1. = Run2. = Touch your shoe3. = Touch elbow to knee4. = Stomp the floor5. = Do a hand jive6. = Do low kicks7. = Reach up to heaven8. = Sit / stand up straight9. = Wiggle your spine0. = Show me your favorite Hero!

Letter Balance:
• Movement-based programs focus on student learning by utilizing multi-sensory integration strategies that has participants:
– jumping, clapping, and moving – singing meaningful lyrics to music– learning academic concepts by engaging more parts of the brain
Increase Brain Functioning
• You will remember:
• 10%- Read• 20%- Hear• 30%- See
• Learning improves dramatically when multiple senses are engaged –– individuals typically retain about
• 50%- See & Hear• 70%- Discuss• 80%- EXPERIENCE• 95%- TEACH SOMEONE ELSE

Twister / Body Balance•Alone•With a Partner
• As participants listen to lyrics, they move to the correct solution of a problem on the Learnercise Phone Mat.
• For example if the answer to a problem is 15, the student would stand with:– Their right foot on - 1 (representing the 1’s column) – their left foot on - 5 (representing the 10’s column)
* if needed the hand becomes the 100’s column

Linking Movement & Learning• Brain Research = • most of the brain is activated during physical activity –
much more so than when doing seatwork
