Steel Industry & Smart City
Jacob Chacko Steel Authority of India Limited
Preface • India is mirroring the world’s trend - being one of the rapidly
urbanizing countries. • Cities are engines of growth for the economy of every nation. • Present status
Population in Urban area - Approx 31% (370 million) Contribution to India’s GDP - 63%
• Expected scenario in 2030 Population in Urban area to go up to 40% (590 Million) Contribution to GDP – 75%
• This requires comprehensive development of physical, institutional, social and economic infrastructure.
• All are important in improving the quality of life and attracting people and investments to the City, setting in motion a virtuous cycle of growth and development.
Development of Smart Cities is a step in that direction.
Smart City Mission
Objective
Provision of core infrastructure and decent quality of life to citizens
Application of Smart Solutions
Ensuring clean and sustainable environment
Focus is on sustainable and inclusive development
Strategy City Improvement (Retrofitting) - Development of an existing built
area greater than 500 acres
City Renewal (Redevelopment) - Replace existing built environment in an area of more than 50 acres and enable co-creation of a new layout
City Extension (Greenfield) - Develop a previously vacant area of more than 250 acres
Pan-city development - Application of Smart solutions
Core infrastructure in Smart Cities
Infrastructure cannot be complete without STEEL
Steel Solutions
Infrastructure including flyovers , culverts, roads, buildings - Rebars,
Structurals , Plates, Tubular sections, etc
Sanitation – Steel pipes
Water supply – Steel pipes
Garbage – Stainless steel bins,
Lighting Towers
Architectural marvels in Steel – Bandra-Worli sea link, Airports, Chenab
bridge, Bailey bridge, etc

Steel Industry – A solution Provider to Smart City
Steel
Steel is a major commodity
Backbone of Indian economy
Contributes 2% to GDP
Major contributor towards infrastructure development
Steel – Organized and Unorganized sector
Steel – Long & Flat products
Long - Primarily for Infrastructure which includes Roads, Railways, etc.
Flat - Automobile, Defense, Pipelines, etc
Steel - Large Employer directly & indirectly ~ 6 lac people
Major Cog in the Growth story of India

Sectoral consumption of Steel in India
Others (15%)
Construction (35%)
Infrastructure (20%)
Automobiles (12%)
Pipes and Tubes (10%)
Capital goods (8%)
Advantages of Steel Structures
Long-life Durability Lower Life Cycle Cost
Environment friendly
Recycling of Steel structures
Better aesthetics Ease of design and greater flexibility
Design comfort
Cost effective 20% less than conventional structure
Shorter Lead Time Reduction by 50% for erection of structure
Steel – Solutions for Smart city
Steel - Should be most preferred material of choice
long life low overall costs considering life cycle cost.
Smart City initiative Is an urban renewal and retrofitting programme. Major facelift of the existing inadequate infrastructure, including
roads, flyovers, airports, residential areas, city sewage systems, community areas, including parks, shopping centers, hospitals and schools.
For structures with at least a 100 year life cycle with minimal maintenance & quick completion
Steel is the solution, whether it is underground or above ground or
in buildings.
Steel – Solutions for Smart city
If made with steel All sewage, drainage, water, casing for cable for Internet or transmission,
will ensure zero wastage and maintenance. Roads laid with concrete & strengthened with steel, translates to lesser
damage over a period Buildings across the globe are steel intensive. Drinking water pipes made of stainless steel for transporting water, not
only good for health but also stop leakage of potable water, a precious commodity today .
Bridges & culverts would have a longer life span Installing crash barriers of steel on highways will provide safety and
protect valuable lives
Steel, by virtue of its properties provides greater flexibility for fabrication for
infrastructure requirement
Steel – Solutions for Smart city
Steel offers distinct advantage Life cycle cost Can be recycled, No debris Environment friendly Fastest and cost effective with steel structures No debris Faster execution of projects
The principle of life cycle cost has been included in Rule 136 (1) (iii) of the new General Financial Rules (GFR), 2017
Projects relating to roads, bridges, buildings, construction of railways, shipping and rural roads, the principle of life cycle cost would be crucial while designing. steel-intensive projects may see higher initial costs. But, in the long run, their overall cost comes down — determined by factors such as material, quality, repairs needed, the time for execution of the projects, etc. Buildings would be eco-friendly and sturdy
Steel would provide sustainable solutions
Summing up….. Steel would play a major role in ….
Road connectivity for connecting these houses.
Rail connectivity
Arranging water would require laying out of pipelines for transportation of
water.
Small pipes would be required while constructing these houses.
Transmission line towers for transporting electricity to these houses
Once the houses are made, then other basic amenities like schools,
hospitals, banks, shopping units, etc would also come up at these place.
Think STEEL for smart solutions
