Steeplechase Community Association Newsletter - February 2008 Volume 6, Issue 2 February 2008 The Official Newsletter of The Steeplechase Community Improvement Association, Inc. and Steeplechase 2008 Home Owner Association Fees The 2008 annual assessments are due now. Every homeowner should have received a statement from the respective association. These fees fund community operations including sheriff’s patrols, streetlights, landscaping, pest control etc. as well as needed capital improvements in the subdivision. If you need any additional information please contact our management company, PCMI, at 281-870-0585. Babysitting Co-op Interested in meeting other families in the neighborhood? Need a play group for your children? Having trouble finding a babysitter? Want a Ladies Night Out? Meet your neighbors and make new friends at the Steeplechase Babysitting Co-op. For info on our next meeting, call Candace at 832-237-2773. Cy-Fair Fire Department A half-century ago a core group of volunteers banded together in a effort to keep homes, farms and businesses safe from fire and other emergencies in the quiet and remote Cy-Fair community. That spirit is alive and well today with 375 volunteer firefighters working alongside 200 employees to provide fire, rescue and emergency response services to more than 300,000 residents. The non-profit Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department is now the largest volunteer fire department in the country. It started with one station and a second-hand pumper truck. Today it has ladder trucks, tanker trucks, ambulances and even thermo-imaging cameras that allow firefighters to see through thick smoke and flames. Firefighters and EMS personnel now respond to almost 20,000 calls a year from 11 stations throughout the 167-square mile territory. The area covers neighborhoods southwest and northeast of Highway 290 between Clay Road and the Harris-Waller County lines. After years of relying on donations and billing services, Harris County Emergency Services District No. 9 (ESD#9) was formed to levy property taxes to provide funding. ESD#9 contracts with Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department and provides a $13 million revenue stream through that property tax, which is $.0591-per-$100 property valuation. Gail Schubot, President of the Board of Directors and a volunteer firefighter, said the department relies primarily on that property tax to fund operations, but does receive donations from the community. Though considered a “combination” fire department – with both volunteer and paid employees – the firefighter duties are largely covered by volunteer staff. A small staff of paid firefighters covers the daytime weekday shift – because many volunteers are at work out of the district. Paid staff primarily covers the EMS services. The department is always looking for good volunteers to help with the 24/7 coverage. All new CFVD volunteers train for a minimum of 125 hours over 8-10 weeks before going on emergency runs. Volunteers continue with monthly training sessions. For more information on volunteer opportunities call 281-550-6663 or go to www.cyfairvfd.org. Information made available from Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce Clubhouse Rentals Looking for a special place for a birthday party, graduation or anniversary reception? The Steeplechase Clubhouse can be rented out on weekends for private events. Steeplechase homeowners in good standing (all HOA fees are paid) can rent the clubhouse at reduced rates. For more information, call Phyllis McFarland at 832-922-8031. February R.A.D. Classes R.A.D. classes will be held at our community center on February 18, 19 and 20 from 6-10pm. These rape prevention defense classes are open to women age 14 and older. This is a highly acclaimed national program taught by specially trained Harris County Constables. Women of all ages have benefited from this course sponsored by our Steeplechase Community Improvement Association. What should your main objective be in coaching, teaching or parenting a Little Leaguer? Is the objective to win? I would say Yes but also No. Winning is important but it is a result. Results, especially in sports are many times determined by actions outside of our control. A game may be won by the opponent on a bad hop, a ball lost in the sun or lights or even by an umpires supposed “bad” call. A game may be lost when a batter with bases loaded does everything right and hits the ball hard o n a line drive but right at the left fielder that doesn’t have to make a move to catch the ball. Yes, in baseball, we may do everything right but still lose. Many times we stress the “results” when instead we should be emphasizing what produces the results. When we teach to do the “little things” right we are putting our players in a position to win. Note: This often means doing repetitive drills which can be boring. A bored player is not learning. One thing that kids love is to make a game or competition out of the drills. In Little League there can be a wide variance of skills among players on the same team. But there is one common denominator that all players need in increasing measure. (including High School, College and Majors) Can you guess? That one thing is Confidence. As the saying goes, Confidence is everything! But confidence in what? Their arm, their bat , their glove? Given that all of those can and will fail what they need is increased confidence in who they are. Many teams give out stars for the players caps after a game for winning. But I suggest giving out stars or rewards at practice for doing the little things right. Especially putting an emphases on “hustle” when making the extra effort for trying to stop a ball (whether they made the play or not) or as a batter hanging tough with a pitcher by fouling off many pitches (even though he may eventually strike out) or showing great attitude or encouragement toward a fellow teammate. What does this do? It builds confidence in themselves. They should be instantly rewarded for doing and being their best. Lastly, as their confidence increases, you as a coach, teacher and parent are looking for one thing. It is called a “breakout.” A breakout can occur in practice or in a game. It may be a breakout “at bat” when a batter gets a hit after a long slump. It might occur on a play he has never been able to accomplish until now with his increased hustle. It is that moment when he realizes, yes I can do this! It is that memorable point when he comes off the field smiling so big, it makes the whole season worth it whether your team is 10-0 or 0-10. But remember, a “breakout” in confidence is not limited to sports and little leaguers.

What is the Main Goal in Little League Baseball?
