About RudolfSteiner

In the face of

increasing global

challenges, Dr.

Rudolf Steiner

(1861 - 1925)

pointed to the

need for a spiritual renewal of

western culture, in areas including

education, agriculture, medicine,

economics, the sciences, religion and

the arts. Today there are literally

thousands of schools, clinics, farms,

and other organisations doing

practical work based on his insights.

He offered a comprehensive path

of spiritual development and

research, which when pursued can

contribute to the creation of a more

humane world.

The Anthroposophical Society in

Great Britain is based at Rudolf

Steiner House and is part of the

General

Anthroposophical

Society founded

by Rudolf Steiner.

Anthroposophy was developed by

Rudolf Steiner (1861 – 1925), as ‘a

path of knowledge to guide the

spiritual in the human being to the

spiritual in the universe’. Starting

from his insight that thinking is a

spiritual activity, Steiner showed how

we can extend our scientific

consciousness to embrace

knowledge of the spiritual dimension

of existence. The outcome is a

science of the spirit capable of

providing us with the ability to

comprehend the

spiritual as well

as the physical

nature of life, and

to recognise the

importance of this

knowledge for the

future of

humanity.

The understanding gained by

Steiner’s research into the spiritual

nature of each human being and of

the world around us has led to a

wealth of practical initiatives such as

Steiner Waldorf education,

biodynamic agriculture and

anthroposophic medicine and

therapies. On-going work takes

place in many other fields, including

science, drama, speech, music and

eurythmy (an art of movement),

architecture and the other visual

arts, as well as social care, sociology

and economics.

Rudolf Steiner’s published work

includes some 30 books and the

transcripts of over 6,000 lectures,

many of which are available in

English translation from the original

German. Copies are available from

the Bookshop or Library at Rudolf

Steiner House.

The AnthroposophicalSocietyFounded by Rudolf Steiner at

Christmas 1923, the General

Anthroposophical Society is, as

Steiner expressed it, ‘an association

of people whose will it is to nurture

the life of the soul, both in the

individual and in human society, on

the basis of a true knowledge of the

spiritual world’.

The Society has its centre at the

Goetheanum in Dornach,

Switzerland, and is connected with

national societies and initiatives

throughout the world, with its

members coming from many cultures

and all continents. The aim of the

Society is to make a spiritually based

contribution to the life of humanity.

As such, the Goetheanum provides

a space where members of the

Society, as well as the general

public, can come and learn and

collaborate by participating in a rich

programme of conferences,

performances and courses. The

heart of the Society is the School of

Spiritual Science, which aims to

continue Steiner’s research and its

practical application.

The Anthroposophical Society in

Great Britain provides a focus for

activity in Great Britain and is a

branch of the General

Anthroposophical Society. The

Society is entirely non-sectarian and

anyone is welcome to join. The only

requirement for membership is to

recognise that the existence of an

institution such as the School of

Spiritual Science is justified.

Membership of the Society is not,

therefore, dependent on agreeing

with the results of Rudolf Steiner’s

spiritual research. Steiner considered

freedom of thought to be fundamental

to human existence, including the

freedom to disagree with his

teachings.

Members of the Society come

together to pursue questions that are

important to them, ranging from a

general study of Anthroposophy to

the exploration of a particular field of

knowledge. The result is a lively

dialogue about Anthroposophy in

relation to contemporary life. The life

of the Society embraces local group

work, festival celebrations, courses,

lectures and artistic events as well as

major national and international

conferences. Members of the Society

receive regular newsletters that cover

activities in Great Britain and around

the world.

Joining the Anthroposophical SocietyIf you would like to know more about

membership or the activities of the

Society, please contact the

Membership Secretary at Rudolf

Steiner House.

If you would like to join the Society,

please request a membership

application form from the

Membership Secretary at Rudolf

Steiner House.

What is Anthroposophy? ExhibitionsMonday 30 September - Friday 22 November Kate Pickin:

‘Mind... Matter’Thinking things into being has been the

subject for debate for millennia and in my

own imaginings I favour that spirit forms

the basis of all matter, underlies our world

and causes things to become. The drops

of dew I have painted are an archetypal

symbol of spirit coming into matter

revered of old by alchemists. We are still

conjuring up our world.

Monday 2 December - Friday 10 JanuaryLili Matkovic and Nina Simunovic:

‘Christmas Imagination' and'Little Prince’A double themed special exhibition by two

Croatian artists presenting their

aquarelles, veil painted in accordance with

Goethe’s colour theory and the indications

of Rudolf Steiner. The two artists studied

in the Free Academy of Art in Split,

Croatia, in collaboration with the Art

Section of the Goethe Institute, Dornach,

Switzerland, in the class of Doris Harpers

and Donald Hall. We very much welcome

their exhibition.

Saturday 21 September 7.30 – 9pmThinking Alive with the World.Cultivating the Roots ofSustainabilityWith Craig Holdrege

How would the world look if our thinking

was truly modelled after the vitality,

dynamism and interconnectedness that

nature herself embodies? Imagine gaining

such flexibility of mind that our ideas were

no longer rigid, static and object-like, but

grew, transformed, and when necessary,

died away. What a revolution! This

revolution demands a shift in

consciousness through which we

wakefully engage with the living forces of

the world and learn to think and act in

harmony with them. In this talk Craig will

show, through many concrete examples,

how nature can become a master teacher

of living thought, which can be the

wellspring of responsible human action.£10 (£7 concessions) For information and to book email

Saturday 26 October 7.30 - 9pmThe Media and the Message.Anthroposophy in a Digital AgeWith Eugene Schwartz

For over 50 years, Waldorf schools

worldwide have been known for their

opposition to the media. Radio and

cinema, amplified music and televised

images, computer screens, video games,

ipods, earbuds, smartphones and tablets

have all lost their lustre when the bright

and clear light of Anthroposophy was

shone upon them. So why are so many

children - Waldorf school students among

them - still held in thrall by the media and

its devices? In tonight's lecture, Eugene

will use the methods of Anthroposophy

not to berate, but rather to better

understand the ‘screen’ and what lies

behind it. Eugene contends that we

cannot understand the enigma of today’s

child without a broader connection to

media technology. As Eugene is also a

Certified Apple iOS Developer, his

research and conclusions may prove

surprising and even refreshing.£10 (£7 concessions) For information and to book [email protected]

historical, the astronomical, the

geometric, the harmonic and the

philosophical aspects both of the

ancient and of this new ‘harmony of

the spheres’.£7 (£3 concessions) – Booking advisable

1 October – Dr Sue PeatOrgan Transplantation - Whatdoes it mean for our lives?Within our living memory transplantation

has become technically possible and is

now an increasingly common medical

intervention. All of us are liable to meet

another human being who has had their

life saved or transformed using

transplantation techniques that have

been developed within the last few

decades. Never before in the

history of the human race has it

been possible for one person’s life

to be so dependent on, and

affected by, that of another. During this

lecture we will review recent advances

in transplantation medicine and consider

what this can mean from a physical,

social and spiritual viewpoint.Dr Sue Peat is a medical consultant at King’sCollege Hospital, London.

8 October – Nick ThomasToday's TechnologyRudolf Steiner's spiritual science

enables us to retain our soul qualities

and live with much of modern

technology, but questions arise about its

relation to art. This lecture will explore

how to live with technology in a creative

and non-subservient manner, and also

Steiner's warning about mechanically

reproduced art.Nick Thomas was trained as an electricalengineer in the RAF. He has been interested inRudolf Steiner's Anthroposophy since his teensand lectures widely on many themes. Currentlyhe is engaged in research to develop a newspiritually-based scientific paradigm.

15 October – Julia DvinskayaIn Dialogue with LifeAs human beings we

grow and develop in

relationship to other

beings and events that

we meet in life. We seek

meaning and

understanding of our life

path and its turning

points, finding our

individual response to the questions of

today’s world, in dialogue with life. In this

talk, we will look at what biography work

and biographical counselling can offer on

this path. We will consider two aspects:

the larger social aspect and the personal.Julia Dvinskaya practices in London as abiographical counsellor and a workshopfacilitator. She came to counselling from abackground in Waldorf teacher training andmany years in university and adult education. She is a trainee tutor on ‘Diploma inBiographical Counselling Course’ and amember of counselling and psychotherapy

professional organisations.

We live in constantly changing, exciting

and sometimes challenging times.

Looking carefully into world and personal

events can lead to an understanding of

how humanity is developing. Working with

this using a careful meditative approach,

as outlined by Rudolf Steiner, can offer us

useful insights into hidden forces at work

behind what we presently experience

within and around ourselves.

s 22 October – Arthur EdwardsMoney Unveiled - Economicsbeyond the Banking CrisisThe 2007 global financial

crisis demonstrated the

inability of conventional

economic thinking to get

hold of events. We now

live in an unfamiliar

landscape but are apparently without the

conceptual tools to chart a new course. In

his economics course, given in 1922,

Rudolf Steiner talked about money, as

such, not existing, but only the three kinds

of money, and then indicated that it is with

money that we master the economic

process. What bearing does Steiner's

analysis have on today’s events? It is

money but not as we know it!

On Sunday 6 October, Arthur will be co-

hosting a Michaelmas tele-call on the

theme of money. Details can be found at

Moneyunveiled.comArthur Edwards gives courses in economics and

financial literacy and for the last 8 years has been

an editor of ‘Associate!’, a monthly journal

dedicated to associative economics. In 2008 he

completed a Research Masters at Buckingham

University entitled 'Three Kinds of Money: Rudolf

Steiner in the history of monetary economics'. He is

married with 2 children and lives in the UK near

Bristol.

29 October – Alexander MurrellScience, Pseudoscience andSpiritual ScienceIs meditation a life-style choice or a quest

for knowledge?

What are the scientific foundations of

Anthroposophy?

Is a clear view on science necessary for

recognising the spirit?

Does spiritual science extend natural

science or contradict it?

Rudolf Steiner worked for many years to

make Anthroposophy acceptable to the

modern scientific consciousness. The

foundations he laid are still of great help to

us in understanding Anthroposophy and

treading a modern path of spiritual

development. Without scientific awareness

the communication of spiritual

experiences, instead of being freedom-

enhancing, will rest on faith in

personalities or authorities, or a belief in

some kind of miraculous relationship

between the spiritual and natural worlds.

To help us beyond these obstacles we

need to understand the scientific attitude

and have a right feeling for the true

relationship between science and spiritual

science. This talk will give some ideas to

help with this aim.Alexander Murrell has worked as an Upper Schoolteacher of physics and mathematics for 21 yearsin Wynstones School. He is a member of theEducation and Natural Science Sections of theSchool of Spiritual Science.

5 November – Malcolm DanielsHow Karma affects our Lives TodaySometimes life appears to be cruel, chaotic

and non-fathomable. This is particularly so

when it comes to the complexity of modern

relationships; yet these are all part of our

modern path of initiation. This lecture is an

endeavour to make sense of it and take us

towards a deeper understanding of how

karma operates.Malcolm Daniels is a senior facilitator in the NewAdult Learning Movement and has run workshops, seminars and trainings in many parts of the worldincluding Greece, Ireland, Poland, Romania,Russia, South Africa, Switzerland, the USA and

extensively in the UK.

12 November – Dr Richard HouseEarly Learning in a Hyper-modern World: TheRelevance of Rudolf SteinerThe terms 'modernity', ‘late modernity'

and 'postmodernity' had not been

coined in Rudolf Steiner's time, yet

many of the difficulties and challenges

of modern living dominating these

discourses were pre-figured by Steiner's

cosmology and pedagogical insights.

This talk will show how and why

Steiner's many prophetic insights have

direct relevance to children's learning

experience today.Richard House, PhD, is a charteredpsychologist, a counsellor by first profession, and now Senior Lecturer in Education (EarlyChildhood Studies) at the University ofWinchester. A trained Steiner Waldorf class andkindergarten teacher, Richard co-orchestratedthe three celebrated Daily Telegraph openletters on childhood in 2006 and 2007 (with SuePalmer), and in 2011.

are particularly prone to conflict,

and how conflicts can be managed

constructively through spiritual

knowledge and practices.Howard Smith has worked as a scientist andscience teacher, and now runs a pianobusiness. As a result of his voluntary work as atrustee of a Camphill Community and Waldorfschool, he has developed an interest in thesocial health of communities and organisationsgenerally.

10 December – Rev Tom RavetzThe Assault on the Spirit andour ResponseIt is part of humanity's journey towards

freedom that we emancipate ourselves

from every outer authority. In recent

years, the vehemence of those who

oppose the thought of anything spiritual

- in reaction to dogmatic authority – has

grown and grown. At the same time,

there has been a tremendous growth in

awareness of our interconnected world.

What can anthroposophists do to help

humanity on our onward journey

towards a freedom which encompasses

Atlantean epoch, while 2013 marks 70

years since the 617 Squadron of

Britain, who risked everything to bomb

important dams in Nazi Germany. Like

initiation trials of fire and air, the

dambusters’ Michaelic fortitude never

lessened. But were the bombs of the

largest magnitude a

legitimate way to

combat evil, if ‘all is

fair in love and war’,

or were they of the

same source?Virginia Gilmer is a music teacher, composer andpainter whose connection with Anthroposophygoes back two generations through her motherand her grandparents.

18 October - Nick ThomasComing to Terms with TechnologyThe present fifth cultural age has ushered

in enormous advances in the transition

from toolmaker to technologist. This

challenges us spiritually, and we need to

grasp what has developed in a spiritually

positive manner. How do we find the

balance between subjection to technology

and using it to further our spiritual

evolution?

Nick Thomas was an engineer in the RAF andthen General Secretary of the AnthroposophicalSociety in Great Britain for 21 years. He lectureswidely and his research now concerns a new, more spiritual paradigm for science.

15 November - David LoweLight and Darkness in Western ArtThe exploration of light and darkness by

Western artists was a significant step

taken by Renaissance artists. It led on

to what developed in the work of

Rembrandt, Turner and Impressionists.

A key to the mystery they all stood before

in wonder is given by Goethe in his study

of colour. With slides.David Lowe is a teacher and lecturer in the UKand in the USA. He is the joint author of ‘Goetheand Palladio and the Discovery ofMetamorphosis’ and of ‘Michelangelo and theGrail Impulse’.

29 November - Sylvia FranckeThe Pivotal Position of OurRelationship to the Powers ofOpposition in the Fifth EpochAlienation from our divine origin is the

price humanity paid for 'freedom' gained

because of the 'Fall of Man’. Through the

previous soul epochs the gap has

widened between the two worlds of spirit

and matter. Rudolf Steiner described how

the ‘powers of opposition' sacrificed their

progressive position in evolution so that

we could eventually attain to a higher

position among the Hierarchies. In this

fifth epoch we are attempting to meet the

great challenges which these powers

present to us at the most crucial stage in

evolution. We are undertaking a

'Manichean' task.Sylvia Francke is the author of 'The Tree of Lifeand the Holy Grail' (Temple Lodge Publishing) inwhich she has used her knowledge ofAnthroposophy as an aid to solving the Mystery

of Rennes-le-Chateau.

One of the most fruitful thoughts that havegrown out of Rudolf Steiner’s spiritualresearch is the idea of cultural epochs. Eachone expresses itself in many different waysand through a different kind ofconsciousness. He gives the starting point forour own epoch as 1413, emphasising that itis only an approximate date. Has it becomeclearer what new mystery our own timepresents us with? What are the experiencesthat help us understand the meaning andpurpose of our times which present us withso many new challenges? All welcome.Speakers will assume some familiarity withbasic anthroposophical concepts.
