FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

My dear people, The past week was personally affirming. Last Sunday, I ended this column by mentioning a parishioner who had lost her source for remnants of yarn and was looking for another source in order to knit lap blankets as gifts. As I write, there are more than a couple of bags of yarn sitting in my office. So, to the donors I say: thanks for reading my column and thanks for taking the time to help. Thanks also go to our Women’s Club who got us off to a good start with Stations, Soups and Sandwiches this past Wednesday. The church was nearly full for Stations of the Cross which started at 6:15. I was a little concerned that we might not have enough soups and sandwiches and was pleased we started with one of our strong parish groups, the Women’s Club, to provide. This coming Wednesday, we look forward to soups and sandwiches provided by our Parish Staff, Choir, Parish Council and Deacon. Also, I want to give particular encouragement to those families with young children who participated. There were several and I am convinced that devotions such as Stations of the Cross (which involve the body through ritual genuflections and kneeling for prayers, aka “Catholic aerobics”) truly capture the imagination and can make a significant spiritual imprint. Likewise, we thank the youth of the parish who set up the Hall, served the food, and cleaned up afterward (their annual Lenten service project). Well done: thank you. If any men are still looking for a Lenten project (or even if they are not) you might want to consider our Men’s Reading Group. We meet in spurts and resume our meetings this Friday morning as we take up the classic Man’s Search for Meaning by Victor Frankl. I do believe, as others have written, that part of the crisis of our time is the abandonment of meaning. Far too many people today seem to have victimhood as their highest meaning in life. The human person is better than that and can do better than that. The Reading Group usually meets at 6:30 A.M. in the church (except for First Fridays) for the Sacrifice of the Mass, then adjourns to the Hall for breakfast and discussion of a section of the book until 8:00 A.M. Between books, we usually take a break for a few weeks (or more). If interested, please contact Deacon Vaughan in our office to get a book this week. For this coming Friday, please read: the Foreword, the Preface and pp. 1-48 Please remember this Friday, like all Fridays of Lent, is a day of abstinence from meat. But the next day, Saturday, March 14, is the annual Men’s Club’s St. Patrick’s Dinner which features the best corned beef ever. You don’t want to miss it! Father McInerny

PARISH NEWS AND ACTIVITIES

SUNDAY SCRIPTURE STUDY

Join us for Sunday Scripture study. We meet from 10:30 to 11:20am in the front room of the Sedes Sapientiæ (small white cottage across the street from the church). We will be studying the Acts of the Apostles. Books are available. Any questions, contact Jason Vaughan 843-883-3044.

BIRTHRIGHT For Mothers and Newborns

This Lent, we have a donation bin for Birthright in the parish hall. Please bring mom and baby items (large maternity clothes, newborn diapers, wipes, onesies, crib sheets, towels and rash ointment) and put them in the bin for families in need. A full list is located in the bin. Thank you.

COLLECTION FOR THOSE IN NEED... NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS

The St. Vincent de Paul society will be accepting donations after all Masses this weekend. Your offerings are carefully used to help those in the parish and local area in need of temporary assistance. Please call our confidential helpline, or encourage others who may need assistance to do so. Our number is 843-814-1229. In addition, we have flyers in the back of the church and hall explaining more of how we can help. Thank you for your past support which has been a blessing to so many.

STELLA MARIS MEN’S CLUB

The Stella Maris Men’s Club will hold their monthly meeting in the Parish Hall on Tuesday, March 10th, Social hour begins at 6:30pm, with dinner and club meeting to follow at 7:00pm. All men of the parish are welcome and encouraged to attend.

JOIN OUR BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY

When members of our parish community suffer a loss, our members step forward to bring food for the family after the funeral service. Each 8 member team supplies side dishes for the chicken and ham dinner for 25-35 or so that the parish supplies. The team captains coordinate the volunteers and deliver the main dishes

for the family. Being able to provide relief to a grieving family is a wonderful work of both corporal and spiritual mercy, for the benefit of both parties. Many of our volunteers have served for decades, either as captains or members. As we all age, new folks are needed to carry on this meaningful work. Captains who can pick up the larger orders from Sea Island Harris Teeter are always needed. Team members are usually called on only once or twice a year, as there are ten teams. You can be a

part of this very worthwhile effort by contacting Judy Snyder at 843-568-1126 or Mary Jones at 843-478-7825.

HOST FAMILIES

Calling all parishioners!! Anyone interested in being a host “family”? Whatever does that mean? Host families are those parishioners who greet you at the door before Mass and hand out the Orders of Worship, they bring up the gifts during Mass and they stay a little bit after Mass to pass out the bulletins and do a bit of housekeeping (picking up left Orders, etc. in the pews). We would love to welcome your family to our Host Family Ministry. For further information please contact Julie Rosebrock at [email protected].
