Learning about the effects of drugsA group Grade 10 pupils has learnedfrom experience that while drugsandalcoholmay seemcool to take in-itially, the long-term impact is any-thing but.Tohelp theclassof 20pupilsunder-

stand the effects of potentially dan-gerous substances, Vision AfriKaclass coordinator, Zukisa Xegwana, used experiential learning tech-niques to raise awareness and makethe issues appear more real.“People talk about these things in

school, church and on TV, but itseems remote and the pupils ignoreit. So I wanted them to experience ita little bit for themselves.”As a result, at the start of the ses-

sion, hebeganbysprayingtheVisionAfriKa classroom with insect spray. He had asked one of four student

volunteers from Stellenbosch Uni-versity to stand in front of the doorto prevent the pupils from leaving

and another to move in front of thewindow to stop it frombeing opened. When the pupils became anxious

and started to scream, Xegwana putthe insect spray can down and beganto spray air freshener instead. Atfirst, they were happy with thechange,butbythetime,hemovedon-to the thirdcan, theywerescreamingand asking him to stop again.Xegwana explained the rationale

behind the move: “The reason Isprayed the Insect spray was that Iwanted to show them how people re-act towards well-known dangeroussubstances. Using the air freshenerwas then meant to show how peoplerespond to apparently harmlessones.”The idea was that, although the

class enjoyed smelling the air fresh-ener at first, the experience becamenegative when Xegwana overdid itand sprayed too much.

“It’s very similar to when peoplestart smokinganddrinking. It seemscool to them at first, but they’re notthinking about the long-term reper-cussions,” he said.Next Xegwana asked the pupils to

organise themselves into smallgroups to discuss the experience. Af-ter their findingshadbeenpresentedto the rest of the class, he introduced“substance abuse” as a formal topicand linked it to what they had feltabout the initial spraying activity. When asked what substances they

wouldbeafraid toeven try, most saidtik, cocaine andmandrax, which Xe-gwanacompared to insect spray.Thesubstances that they consideredcool, however, were cigarettes andciderdrinks, whichheequated to theinsidious effects of the air freshener. For more info about the Vision K

Register early childhood centresAs part of a project to register allEarly Childhood Development(ECD) centres, Albert Fritz, theWestern Cape Minister of SocialDevelopment, visited several ofthese centres in the province.“We currently fund 1 060 ECDs,

but despite a major registrationcampaign in 2011 as many ECDsstill remain unregistered and arethereforenotable toaccess thesub-sidy of R15 per child per day. Thisdoes not necessarily mean thatthey are operating illegally, butthat their registration process isnot yet completed,” said Fritz.Fritz recently met with an ECD

forum in Mitchell’s Plain to hearfirst-hand what the stumblingblocks are and how governmentcan help. “Many of the stumblingblocks or delays in their registra-tion have to do with local govern-ment requirements, as they relateto health and safety.“I have subsequently met with

the City of Cape Town and we arenegotiating an agreementwith theCity torelaxsomeof theprovisionsfor compliance, without compro-mising the safety of our childrenand teachers,” he said.In the meantime, they have

asked the fully registered ECDs toreach out to those unregisteredones in their communities in a bidto bring them on board and up tospeed, not only in terms of healthand safety requirements, but alsosharing their learning materialsand curricula – similar to a men-toring process.“This is currently working very

well in Mitchell’s Plain, wheresome ECDs have even formedsmaller ‘hubs’ so as to work closerwith either new or existing ECDswho are still in the process of get-

ting their registration sorted.“It is not about competing for

government funding, but ratherbuilding bridges so that we canworkcollectivelytoimprovelearn-ing, stimulation and developmentof our young children.”Fritz plans on visiting several

more communities across theprovince. Dedicated ECD helpdesks are also being set up at localsocial development offices in a bidto inform and assist the ECD cen-tres that are still in the process ofcompleting their registration.“This exercise is not just about

chasing numbers. Apart from thefocus on statutory compliance, there is a huge focus on the qualityof learning programmes offered atthe ECD centres.“To this end we have since last

year trained over 800 ECD practi-tioners to administer a proper cur-riculum that will help develop thecognitive, language andnumeracyskills of young children.“I want to ensure that through

the opportunities extended by theWesternCapeGovernment for ear-ly childhood development, we pre-pare and produce the bestequipped learners in the country.”

New centre to help unemployedUnemployment is one of the biggestproblems in South Africa, which iswhy Lulaway is an important linkbetween people looking for jobs andcompanies looking for staff.

Lulaway Job Centre plans to com-bat unemployment in Stellenboschand surrounding areas using theLulaway Online recruitment plat-form. The platform provides corpo-rates with direct access to entry lev-el and semi-skilled workers. Lula-way has recently licenced WowInternet Café in Stellenbosch tohelp combat unemployment in Stel-lenbosch and surrounding areas.

The Job Centre will pride itself inoffering hope for a better (gainfullyemployed) future for the youth inthese areas and will ensure a highsuccess rate in both the screeningand job interviews that follow withwell-known employers includingMcDonalds, Dis-Chem Pharmacies, and Bidvest Prestige.

The recruitment centre will pro-vide a host of work possibilities,

which would not have otherwisebeenaccessible to thecommunities.

Considering that many peoplecannot afford to travel to the cityand recruitment agencies or evenknow how to put a curriculum vitaetogether, Wow Internet Café willgive them the opportunity of show-casing their skills and getting ontoan employment database at a mini-mal fee of R65.

The job seeker will receive aprinted CV after he or she has com-pleted the online registration proc-ess.

The Lulaway system takes the ef-ficient internet job-board to thenext level by creating a vibrant plat-form with Wow Internet Café on theground.

Job seekers can visit Wow Inter-net Café, situated at 38 LibertasBuilding, corner of Andringa andBanghoek Roads, Stellenbosch, where consultants will construct aCV, scan relevant documentationand take photographs.

Applicants are put though rigor-ous screening and testing, designedto test skills, knowledge, aptitudeand corporate fit.

This information is filteredthroughanonlinedatabaseandpro-fessionally presented in an accessi-ble and usable format.

An SMS facility is then providedto employers to communicate withapplicants individually or en masseat the touch of a button.

Contrary to some reports and sta-tistics, we, here on the ground, be-lieve that at least 50% of the youthare unemployed in Stellenboschand surrounding areas.

Gauteng’s Department of SocialDevelopment has fully backed theLulawayconceptandhasthrownitsfull support behind the Lulawayproject.

For more information visit theircentre on the corner of Andringaand Banghoek Roads.

October is Arthritis Month – there is helpALETTA VAN DER WATT

October is World ArthritisAwarenessMonth,butwhydedi-cate a whole month for a diseasethat only older people get?

Although it is a common percep-tion, arthritis is actually a catch-allphrase for a groupof over 150 differ-ent diseases that can strike anyonefrom babyhood, through the teen-age and adult years, aswell as olderpeople. Most people connect the idea of

arthritis to older people, but that isbecause Osteoarthritis is the mostcommonarthritisdiseaseand is theone suffered by a very high propor-tion of people as they get older. It comesaboutwhen the cartilage

between the joints wears down, causing friction of the bones of thejoint, resulting in pain and inflam-mation. It’s also caused by jointdamage from overuse through cer-

tain sports, or from a lifestyle ofsmoking or insufficient exerciseleading to obesity andweakmusclestrength.Other forms of arthritis include

gout, which is quite common, espe-cially here in the Winelands withall the good living we have on ourdoorstep. It is caused by too muchuric acid in the system formingcrystals that are deposited in thejoints, often the big toe, causing ex-cruciating pain. Luckily gout canlargely be controlled by reducingfoodswithpurines suchas redmeatand too much red wine, and withmedication. There can be quite asignificant genetic factor involvedwhich would lead to more severeforms of gout. That still leaves about 150 other

diseases. Almost all other arthritisillnesses are caused by a malfunc-tion of the auto-immune system forunknown reasons, although it’spossible that genetics, stress and

certain severe viral infections mayactivateoneof thesediseases insus-ceptible people.Auto-immune arthritis diseases

lead to the body’s own defencesturning against the cells in thejoints, resulting in serious inflam-mation, generalmalaise, severeun-relenting pain and eventual de-formity. About 1 in 100 people willdevelop one of these diseases, themostcommonbeingrheumatoidar-thritis. More women than men fallvictim to these diseases, althoughone of them, ankylosing spondyli-tis, is most common among youngmen, where the spine graduallystiffen to resemble bamboo.Children too get juvenile idio-

pathic arthritis. This disease isvery similar to rheumatoid arthri-tis, although children show anumber of variations. These chil-dren suffer terribly, not only fromsevere pain, swelling and increas-ing disability, but also from the

emotional trauma of losing thecarefree childhood everyonedreams of for their children. If you think you suffer from one

of these diseases, the first step is toconsult your general practitioneror attend the local clinic, who willprescribe basic pain and anti-in-flammatory medication. Remem-ber to ask what the side effectsmight be.However, be warned that very

few GPs have adequate training indealingwithmorecomplex formsofarthritis, so it’s a good idea, if youare still concerned, to ask for a re-ferral to a rheumatologist. We are very fortunate to have a

top rheumatology practice in DieBoord, run by rheumatologist Pro-fessor Helmuth Reuter and histeam. There are excellent medica-tions today that can make a hugedifference, some of whichmay onlybe prescribed by a rheumatologist. The Helderberg Hospital runs a

monthly arthritis clinic where youcan receive excellent care, but youneed to make an appointment withthe hospital and come prepared towait. The best thing to do if you suffer

from one of these diseases is firstlyto stop smoking, lose weight if youneed to, and eat a balanced diet offresh, unprocessed foods. The Ar-thritis Foundation in the Helder-berg/Boland runs a monthly openmeeting with relevant speakers atMediclinic Vergelegen and we’restarting the foundation’s supportgroup programme in the new year. The foundation’s helpline

number during office hours is0861 30 30 30. Their website, packedwithuseful information, iswww.ar-thritis.org.za or follow them on fa-cebook at Arthritis Foundation [email protected] or on thegeneral information address [email protected]

Keep stress under control during examsWith the exams around the cor-ner, you may already feel thepressure.

“Don’t let the looming examsturn you into a nervous wreck.Takeadeepbreathand follow thesetips,” says Monique Harrisberg,CEO of The Voice Clinic, situatedin Johannesburg, Pretoria, CapeTown and Durban. There are ways to make your life

less frantic during this period sothat you can perform at your best.Remember, cramming – an examtrademark – is not going to do yourbrain or nerves any favour.“That’s why it makes sense to

start planning for your exams as

soon as you receive your examtimetable,” says Harrisberg.Determine the amount of work

you have to cover, the time that itmay take you to do so and set upa study schedule.“Yourbest bet is to set fourweeks

aside for studying and two weeksfor revision. This will give you am-ple time to internalise your studymaterial and ask for helpwith diffi-cult subjects or topics. Divide yourstudymaterial for each subject intobite-sizedchunksandallocate themto specific hours or days on yourschedule.Although tempting, don’tmake your least favourite subjectsyour last priority.”Plan your time, draw up a realis-

tic schedule and stick to it. Includesome relaxation as it is not healthyto have your nose in your books allthe time. Break up your time withshort breaks.Don’t be unrealistic. You have a

good idea of what you are capableof. Being realistic about your re-sults will help prevent you frombe-ing disappointed.Avoid alcohol or recreational

drugs that are not the way to dealwithyour stress rightnow. Also trynot to drink too much coffee. Thecaffeine won’t help you to concen-trate.Revise methodically; simply

reading long swathes of text is notgoing to help you remember facts

and figures. Write out importantdates, facts or passages. Use lots ofcoloured pens and underline keyphrases. Go back over these notesa day later and a week after that.Yourmemorywillbebetterandyouwill feel more confident.Test yourself or get someone to

testyouonyournotes.Regular test-ingmeans that you remember factsbetter.Anygaps inyourknowledgecan be picked up in good time andthat makes the actual exam a lotless stressfulStick post-it’s with key facts and

phrases on these around yourroom. After a while these facts willsink in.Ignore your friends, not entirely

of course. Don’t use them as abenchmark. Know yourself andwhat you have to do – you are inthis for yourself. There is a great source of support

available.Aska teacher if youdon’tunderstand a particular topic.Remember, exercise is a great

way to give yourself a break. A 15-minute jog or a briskwalk is all youhave to do.PhoneTheVoiceClinic in Johan-
