Dr Anne-Gret Iturriaga AbarzuaHead of Communications, INEOS in KölnEngaging young people in STEM careers: be the role model for tomorrow STEM Alliance webinar, 10 November 2017, 12.50 - 13.10 h CET
What is „TuWaS!“ in the Rhineland?
• STEM school program designed by the Freie Universität Berlin
• It helps to get 6 to 12 years old kids interested in STEM
• Schools may choose up to four units (à 16 double hours) per term
• Originates from Smithsonian Science Education Centre;
• Carolina Science is the distributor
• Similar programs in Chile, Luxembourg, Mexico, Sweden, the US
• Units delivered to schools; then collected and refilled again
• Teachers are trained in one-day seminars on each unit (no „fear“)
The „TuWaS!“ themes and units (to date)
• Eight primary school units: life cycle of a butterfly; weather; solids
and liquids; compare and measure; changes; electric circuits;
movement and construction; chemical tests
• Three secondary school units: magnets and motors; micro worlds;
nutrition chemistry

Why „TuWaS!“?
• The Chamber of Commerce did a survey on future challenges
• The member companies identified decreasing interest in STEM
• DYK: The Rhineland is Europe‘s biggest chemical cluster
• Boost the interest for STEM!
• Instead of inventing something new, „TuWaS!“was adopted
• „TuWaS!“ is funded by industry, companies, foundations
• Investment: 2,000 Euros per school and year
The beauty of „TuWaS!“ („do something“)
• Inquiry based science education program
• Every child is involved and works with the material
• Girls become „STEM confident“; demographics are addressed
• Teachers remain in the „background“
• Kids collaborate and experience basis scientific skills
• They make assumptions and work on solutions
• „TuWaS!“ boosts kids‘ vocabulary (e.g. refugees, special needs)
• They have to be precise, prudent, structured, innovative
• Kids talk about „TuWaS!“ units with peers and family members
