MISSION AND VISION Mission
l To enable SLU students to share STEM knowledge and enthusiasm with local students
Vision l Engage local students in STEM thinking l Increase STEM educaFon outreach from SLU l Provide opportunity for underrepresented students
PROBLEM l Students are falling behind in STEM fields in the US l 25th/34 countries internaFonally in Math* l 18th/34 countries internaFonally in Science* l Fewer than 12% of baccalaureate engineering graduates in the US are underrepresented minoriFes
l Idea: Students lack opportunity and interest in STEM fields

SOLUTION Spark STEM interest in local students with long-‐term outreach vision:
• Projects: Hands-‐on experience • PresentaHons: Videos and speakers to keep
interest
• Volunteerism: Weekly and biannual events
• Powerful tools: Mentoring and projects
• Other resources: Local professional engineers, tours of companies, student group volunteers
WHO ARE WE? -‐ A New outreach group on campus -‐ Funded by SLU’s Bright Idea Grant, Student United
Way of St. Louis, and Parks College Alumni Board -‐ Belief in project-‐based learning Core ideas of the project:
• Hands-‐on learning for students provides confidence and excitement
• Good experience for SLU students – teaching is the best way to learn fundamentals
• Providing opportuniFes for leadership and service for SLU students
WHAT DO WE DO? • Go to schools and help students get excited about STEM subjects by teaching hands-‐on classes
