This course was designed and written by the following contributors: Kary Vannice
In 2008, after deciding she wanted to take her life in another direction, and live outside her native country, Kary became certified as an ESL teacher. Having no previous English teaching experience, she researched the process online, took a TEFL certificate course and found an assignment teaching English at a private school in the state of Veracruz, Mexico. Over the three school years Kary taught there she taught primary and secondary students from beginners to advanced learners. Although Kary now works as a freelancer, she continues to teach private English lessons to adults and children whenever possible. Kary’s background is not in English or even education, but in nearly every job she ever had, she found herself in the position of disseminating information in one-way or another. In many of her jobs she created her own educational materials, programs and curriculums. She has worked for government
agencies, private business and even owned her own education camp for kids. Kary is living proof that you don’t have to be a PhD or have classroom experience to succeed at teaching English abroad.

Mairéad later taught for Berlitz, in Brussels, before returning to Canada in 1998, where she taught English to foreign post-graduate students at the University of Guelph and Global Awareness Through English (G.A.T.E.). After completing her doctorate in history, focusing on the role of language in identity, Mairéad taught at universities across Canada and in the U.S.
She has designed and taught courses in History, Film and European Studies, professional development courses in ICT (information and communications technology) for highschool teachers and education consultants. She currently works as a freelance writer and is always planning her next adventure. Dr. Bob Pesek

In 1978, he completed the master's degree in TESOL from Indiana University and left shortly after, with his wife, Christine, for a position teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) at the University of Kerman in Iran. After finishing classes there, Bob returned to Ohio and taught English to international students at the University of Toledo and began doctoral studies in Higher Education. During this time, he also taught a TEFL methodology course for the University of Alabama in Bogota, Colombia. In 1986, with his Ph.D. in hand, Pesek was appointed director of the ESL program at Western Illinois University, traveling frequently to Japan, Korea, and throughout South America recruiting students for the program. In 1996, Pesek continued his international travel as Director of Operations for a private ESL teaching company based in Portland, Oregon. In 2000, he returned to the Midwest and took a position as ESL Program director at the University of

INTRODUCTION By this point, you should have an idea of what type of job might suit you, be it Business English or Young Learner English or Private tutoring. You may even have an idea of what type of certification would best support you in getting your future teaching job, if any. Now the real test is to find a job that matches your criteria:
Type of Job
Country or City of Interest
Salary & Benefits Offered
Duration of Contract
All of these details will be unique to you, and your needs. There are many different kinds of jobs out there, as you have already discovered. The great thing about that is if you are focused on any one of these criteria more than another there is a good chance you will find the right job. It’s time to “let your fingers do the walking” as they used to say, only now that not only means using the yellow pages and dialing a phone it also means striking a keyboard and clicking a mouse! We are going to be going to be focusing mostly on the latter in your search for the perfect ESL job.

So Many Choices The first thing you need to keep in mind as you begin your search for the right ESL job is, this area is incredibly diverse. You’ve already seen this in Step #1-‐Job Options and Step #2-‐Certification Options. The same applies to your job hunt: There are as many types of ESL teaching jobs as there are schools, countries, and approaches to training. This is why doing your research ahead of time is so important. A few lessons ago you discovered that there were 1,700 ESL jobs available on one website alone! Now that you have learned more about ESL jobs you are well prepared to narrow your search down and find the job that is perfect for you. If you are still unsure what certification option might be best for you, searching for jobs will tell you what type of certification (if any) is necessary to get the job you are aiming for. The good news is that there are literally thousands of ESL teaching jobs out there and, once you know your job search options, you will have no trouble finding them. Where should you start? If you are one of the lucky ones who already knows exactly where you’d
like to go, start by narrowing things down to your country, region or city of interest. If you’re more like the rest of us, decide on a rough area but explore various possibilities within that – and be open to change, as you might
discover an opportunity that hadn’t occurred to you, which might be much more your speed.
Like every stage in this process, the more you know the more you’ll figure out what you want – knowing your option is the key to making a choice that is right for you.

How do you start? All of the options listed below fall under one of three categories:
1) You pay a placement or recruitment agency to match you to the right ESL job for you 2) You do a broad job search 3) You respond to an advertisement posted online, either on a job board or online advertising site
None is better than another, they are each simply different avenues to the same goal. You might want to try more than one or even all three.
PLACEMENT AGENCY Placement agencies (or recruiters) make their money by filling positions for schools and finding positions for candidates. You submit your resume to them, they screen you and have you in their database for when a suitable position appears. You must already be in their system to be matched when the jobs come in, but you don’t have to do the job search yourself – they do it for you. There is a fee for this service but it differs according to the placement agency. In most cases either you pay a fee for placement, or the employer pays it as a fee to the agency for doing the work of finding a good candidate. If you want to use a specific placement agency just ask them who pays the fee, it may be both! International Examples:

Each agency serves as a portal to schools offering a variety of teaching jobs in various countries for schools that use their services. Local Recruitment Agencies There are hundreds of lesser know agencies around the globe that specialize in finding teachers for specific countries, regions, schools, etc. You may be able to find one in the area you are interested in with a quick Google search. Placement agencies will be able to offer you a standard description of the school, as well as complete information on housing, travel, health insurance, etc. It is their job to make sure that you and the school are as happy. There success rests on the fact that both parties end up in a mutually beneficial relationship.

Tip: Agencies tend to have higher paid positions to fill. Schools using their service are often affluent schools that can
afford to pay their fees. If you choose to include a placement agency in your job search strategy don’t confine yourself to just one, or even just to agencies in general. Their market is limited by the fee structure – make sure you explore the other options listed here as well. If an agency isn’t completely forthcoming on details like salary, accommodation, hours of work or other basic job conditions, don’t deal with them. If you are committing to a contract of 6 months to a year in some far off country, you are entitled to ask a lot of questions. Placement with Certificate Program
As you learned in the Certification Lesson, some certification programs offer a graduate placement service. This certainly seems like a great all-‐in-‐one option for potential teachers looking to both earn certification and get a job quickly. However, they only place their own graduates. If you want to go straight from your certification course to the classroom, this is a wonderful option. Almost every country in Latin and South America will have a company that offers this “combo deal”. There are also many agencies in Asia, Europe, and Africa that will guarantee placement after you complete their course.
Before committing to this package deal, you should find out from the organization exactly where they offer their placement services, for what types of positions, for how long, and at what price. The devil is in the details, as they say, so educated yourself thoroughly before you jump at a placement that isn’t right for you. EMBASSY AND GOVERNMENT JOB BOARDS Governments are always a good safe place to find a job. There are not as many jobs to choose from, but they are out there and you can count on them to be legitimate. And finding these jobs can be easy. Just check your countries’ Embassy website for the country you wish to work in.

Find out more about these ESL job opportunities through the US government by listening to our audio interview with
Marilee McKlintock and Reading the Bonus Report “Working for an Embassy”.
For those of you who hail from Canada check out this government site to find out more about teaching abroad:
http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/subjects/travel/abroad.shtml Nearly every country will have similar government sponsored programs that will offer job opportunities for their citizens to share their English language ability abroad either as a volunteer or in a paid position. Local government web site in the country you choose may also offer jobs in their country. If the program you plan to teach in is government-‐sponsored, there will be information available either on the website or through embassy staff.
CONSLUSION As you can see there are many, many different businesses, organizations and people who can help you find your first teaching job. There is no need to “go it alone” if that is not something you are comfortable with. Just do a little research and you will find there are helping hands in nearly every corner of the globe just waiting to point you in the right direction.
The key is not to be afraid to seek the help of others as you embark on
this new adventure.

Step #4 Part 1 Assignment 1) Check out one of the International Recruiting Agencies listed in the lesson and then use Google (or another search engine) to search for a local recruiting agency in the country of your choice. If they have jobs listed on their website, see what the basic requirements are for at least 3 jobs. If they do not list their jobs, write an email or call to find out what jobs they have available. Take this opportunity to find out what their fees are for job seekers, if any. 2) Put the word out, start asking people you know if they know of anyone who has taught abroad or lives in the country you are interested in.
Use our special ‘Ideas Folder’ to start keeping a list of names and contact information.
This will prevent you from having a corkboard full of sticky notes and little scraps of paper with names and phone numbers of people you won’t remember in a week, let alone in 6 months when you are getting ready to move. 3) Listen to the interview with Marilee McClintok and read the Bonus Report “Teaching English for the US Embassy ” to find out more about working for government agencies.
