SOAR8 Committee Budgets Adopted,

Franciscan Retreat Needs Ideas for Workshops

We adopted budgets for all committees for the November SOAR8 Convention at our March 2 meeting. On

Saturday, March 3, several of us toured the Grand Island Resort at the Sandpiper on St. Pete Beach, where

the convention will be held.

The site was impressive and we think that members from around the region will have a truly enjoyable

experience when they come. We saw the meeting rooms where business will be held. We were awed by the

beach looking out on the Gulf. We viewed guests rafting down the paddle pool and even got to see a large

white swan, though not the more famous black swan.

We all have a lot of work to do and would like more volunteers to attend the next meeting. We will meet on

April 13 since April 6 is Good Friday. The meeting is at Morton Plant Hospital in the Tuttle Auditorium, the

same place as the intergroup meeting.

We are trying to hold a retreat in early August at the Fransican Center in Tampa. The Suncoast Intergroup

has decided not to support this retreat but we feel that we in Pinellas can successfully conduct this event

ourselves. We need an attendance of 25 people to make the event successful but last year got only 15. With

effort and input from our members we believe we can convince enough people to attend. Think of what topics

you would like to include in workshops if you attend the retreat. Discuss this in your groups and if you have

ideas, bring them to the PTI meeting on March 16.

The Franciscan Center offers an environment of peace, simplicity and hospitality for all those seeking

spiritual renewal. It welcomes people from all faiths to come and find acceptance, peace and healing and to

listen to God amidst the beauty of creation.

The Center is a private, non-profit retreat house staffed by the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, NY and

dedicated laity who are assisted by loyal volunteers in carrying out their ministry.

The Center is located on eight acres of riverfront property in a quiet residential neighborhood minutes from

downtown Tampa and Tampa International Airport. The Center's facilities include a chapel, conference area,

dining room, library, labyrinth, riverside pavilion, gift shop, and 38 comfortable bedrooms with private

showers. The 15 single rooms are assigned on first-come, first-served basis. Two of the bedrooms are fully

equipped for handicapped access. All public areas are disabled accessible and assistance can be obtained for

the hearing impaired. The building has central air conditioning and heat and ceiling fans in each room. Meals

are prepared by our staff. Bed linens and bath towels are provided.

The Gift Nook continues to be a source of all things Franciscan to enhance your retreat experience, including

cards, books, music, Franciscan Tau and San Damiano crosses.

CHAIR CHATTER MARCH 2012

Good news! Our committees are up and running for the November SOAR 8 Business Assembly and Recovery Convention at the Tradewinds Grand Island, which we are hosting. :-) Please join us and lend a hand to the committees as we plan and work on themes …decorations ... banners … crafts … costumes …skits … and put together packets. The fellowship is amazing and fun! Next meeting is Friday, April 13, 2012 at Morton Plant, Tuttle Auditorium, 6:30 pm. Tuesday, March 27th we will be at St. Pete College for the Career Day Fair. We arrive at 10:00 and leave at 1:30. Our mission is to carry the message to those studying in the health care fields so they know about our fellowship and maybe sometime in their career carry the message to their patients. We have had a few students attend our meetings to observe and see firsthand what we’re about. So please make time and help us carry the message. Sometimes while doing this service I forget to take care of me ... I did get to the Florida State Convention to give me the shot that I always love! I love seeing all my program friends from near and far. I even got to meet the author of a book I read so long ago in the beginning of my recovery, which helped me tremendously. Our Action in Abstinence committee has planned some things for this month; be sure to check it out on our web page. I am sad to say we had to close two meetings: Anona on Wednesday night and St. Dunstan’s on Thursday. We are still keeping the Pinellas Park Library meeting alive thanks to two members who have stepped up. Please try to support that meeting once in awhile if you can. Also the St. Anthony’s meeting needs support. Please check time and locations. We had one Scholarship Fund application for the Raleigh Convention. Thank you to all the groups--keep those donations coming. Next month I will be attending the Word Service Business Conference. This is where the motions are voted on by the delegates from Intergroups around the world. Thanks for taking the time at our last meeting to voice our Intergroups opinion ... I will carry the message. Thanks for letting me share and serve! Love N Hugs, Linda H.
