Step: Ahead, a project motivated to bring people together, reaches beyond just transferring information from point A to point B but works to connect people in New York City from all backgrounds and walks of life. By collecting their footprints and essentially their story, we are bringing together a larger picture of New York City pedestrians.

We decided on Madison Square Park as our point of intervention. It represents the public spaces in Manhattan which are filled with people, yet still feel isolating to pedestrians. In this new and ever-growing digital world, people are constantly hooked to their “screens” and never give a second thought to who they are passing on the street. People are normally not talking to others in this area and we saw this as a site with great potential for connection.

We constructed a mobile station which consists of a table, informational poster, ink pads, wipes, and sheets of 11X17 paper on which we collected our data. Upon set up, we brought people from around the site location to add their footprint to our collection by creating a fun and positive atmosphere (as well as promise of a free book).

During the intervention the participants were invited to stamp their footprint onto a sheet of paper and write down where they are “from” and where they are “going.” Contributors were then given information about an online archive of all the footprints where they will be able to download a digital book of all the footprints at a later date.
