The Exodus: Moses’ Excuses

I. Moses’ Excuses

A. I’m not worthy (Ex. 3:11-12).

God’s Response: But, I will be with you (v.12)

B. I Don’t know Enough about God (Ex. 3:13-23).

God’s Response: Tell them “I Am” sent you (v.14).

C. The people will not believe me (Exod. 4:1-9).

God’s Response: Use the staff, hand and the Nile authentication process.

1. Staff—turns to a serpent. (Ex. 4:2-4)

2. Hand—turns leprous (Ex. 4:6-7)

3. Nile—waters turns to blood on dry ground (Exod. 4:8-9)

II. The Plagues.

God used 10 plagues to persuade Pharaoh to release God’s people, but due to the hardness of his heart, Pharaoh refused. The result were catastrophic for Egypt, but wondrous for Israel.

Plague 1: Nile and water turn into blood for 7 days (Exod. 7:14-25).

Plague 2: Frogs everywhere (Exod. 8:1-15).

Plague 3: Gnats as Dust of the Earth (Exod. 8:16-19).

Plague 4: Swarm of flies (not in Goshen)(Exod. 8:32).

Plague 5: Severe Plague on Egyptian livestock (Exod. 9:1-7).

A. Purpose of the Plagues

Purpose 1. To show that Yahweh alone is God (Exod. 7:17)

a) Pharaoh was thought to be a God.

b) Animals were of religious significance (e.g., frogs, etc).

c) God alone controls nature

d) Act of Judgment on Egypt’s false gods.

The Exodus: The Red Sea

I. The Dramatic Red Sea Climax (Exodus 14)

A. God’s people were in Egypt 430 years (Exod. 12:40). By a strong hand God delivered his people and brought them to the Red Sea (lit. Yam Suph (Sea of Reeds).

B. Israel was pinned between the mountains, Egyptians and the Red Sea.

1. The people panicked and grumbled in fear indicating that they’d rather be in Egypt than in fear running for their lives! (Exod. 14:10- 12).

2. Moses encouraged the people to be courageous, yet he cried out in earnest prayer

to God (Exod. 14:15).
