Who We AreStep IT Up America, a UST Global national program, provides a vital formula to train and employ inner-city minority women. It equips them with the technological skills to launch successful IT careers.

Our immediate commitment is to train and employ 1,000 inner-city women in ten of the nation’s largest cities.

Within those cities, the program will reach 50 communities across America to train and employ hundreds of minority women each year.

Agents Of Social ChangeInformation Technology, along with other STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) occupations, are the biggest job creators in both America and around the world. Yet, we fi nd that minorities are severely underrepresented in these positions. As corporations are under pressure for cost and speed of technology implementation, more and more of these jobs and opportunities are concentrated on very few sectors in the society and in a few countries around the world.

We believe this can be changed. It is incumbent on Corporate America to make this happen. UST is investing in recruiting, training, and employing a thousand women from inner-cities who display the commitment to attend a community college. Those selected participants will go through intensive training on several aspects of information technology. They will be trained in visualization, mobility, quality assurance, and other aspects of Information Technology. Once they graduate from our training program, UST will hire these women as Information Technologists. We work with local community colleges and civic organizations to identify those individuals who have the desire and aptitude to be successful in the program. We have engaged our partner, Knowledge Crossing, to design the curriculum and to help assess the candidates. STEM Connector® has endorsed our plan and is working with us to engage the support of government offi cials.

UST will launch the program at a major media event in each chosen city, and invite that city’s corporate citizenry, state and local government offi cials, heads of civic and community groups, notables and celebrities. We will seek civic and community groups to help us screen the candidates. A er the participants have completed the training, UST will host another major media event to introduce the graduates and corporations which agree to engage them.

We are looking to partner with local corporations to make this program a success. We guarantee work for all program participants who complete the training and ask corporate citizens to give them an opportunity to change their lives forever.

We believe this program will be a win for all: the individuals, corporations, and America.

The Numbers Behind The NeedOnly three in 10 high school graduates are employed full time, compared with college graduates who are employed at nearly twice that rate. For those who graduated high school in 2006, 2007, and 2008 (before the recession) 37% are employed full time, compared to only 16% who graduated during the recession era. [i]

Among 18 -34 year olds who are employed, less than half (46%) say they have the education and training necessary to get ahead in their job or career. Among those who are not working, only 27% say they are adequately prepared for the kind of job they want. [ii]

African-American women represent 4.8% of the graduate enrollment in computer science, yet they represent 7% of the US population. [iii]

Since 2010, the share of young adults ages 18 to 24 currently employed (54%) has been its lowest since the government began collecting this data in 1948. The gap in employment between the young and all working age adults (~15% ) is the widest in recorded history. In addition, young adults employed full time have experienced a greater drop in weekly earnings (down 6%) than any other age group over the past four years. [iv]

Each year, every “disconnected” youth imposes an immediate taxpayer burden of $13,900 per year and an immediate social cost of $37,450 per year. [v]

Despite high unemployment, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports there are more than 3 million open jobs in the U.S. that employers are unable to fi ll with qualifi ed workers. [vi]

STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) jobs are the fastest-growing category of jobs in the United States, and 70% of those jobs involve computing. [vii]

Computer science jobs command some of the highest starting salaries in the US: $65,000 per year -- about twice the median household income of a Black or Latino family. [vii]

The Numbers Behind The NeedThe unemployment rate for STEM works is lower than for all workers; the unemployment rate for African-Americans and Latinos is three times the nationwide rate. [viii]

So ware developers are in demand. At the current rate that computer scientists are graduating, there will be 1 million so ware jobs unfi lled by 2020. [viii]

Fewer than 4% of Black and Latino students study computer science and only one in 14 technical employees in the tech hub of Silicon Valley is Black or Latino. [viii]

The US will be majority-minority in the year 2040 with 42% of the country reporting as Black or Latino. [viii]

“We want to create a program that connects to the heart and soul for fundamental social change. Knowing that there are 160,000 IT jobs in our country and that by 2018, the current majority of Americans under the age of 18 will be the minority, how do we build the quality scale? “A diverse staff is one of the best ways to bring fresh concepts and new ideas into your company. It’s a great way to keep from indulging in groupthink and make sure you’re hiring the best people.” - Josh Tolan, CEO, SparkHire

“As markets expand globally being able to understand and reach out to the individual needs of people from other cultures and regions will be paramount. A multicultural, talented, and trained employee base gives companies that key advantage.” –Equality Magazine.com, http://equalitymagazines.com/index.php/why-diversify/why-hire-diversity

“History has proven that those companies that fully tap into the women in their workforce benefi t from the diverse talents and perspectives they bring and are the most successful. We need to provide more fl exible education…” - Jim Kirsch, CEO, Professional Diversity Network,

UST Global Is Recognized as Leader of STEM Eff orts Across the GlobeSajan Pillai Named to 100 CEO Leaders by STEMConnector®

ALISO VIEJO, CA--(Marketwired - June 26, 2013) - UST Global, an information technology and solution services company for Global 1000 enterprises, announced CEO Sajan Pillai has been recognized by STEMConnector® as one of the 100 CEO Leaders in STEM for promoting education and innovation in technology. Pillai’s work and perspective on the future of U.S. competitiveness and the need for a STEM workforce has been profi led in an unprecedented publication produced by STEMConnector®.

CEO Sajan Pillai also presented UST Global’s contributions to the report, “EDTech: Revolution in Education 2013” at the U.S. News STEM Solutions 2013 conference to more than 2,000 attendees and 100 CEO leader honorees. Pillai was among a select group of distinguished CEOs who spoke at the event, along with Michael Araten, CEO of K’Nex and Seth Harris, the 11th United States Deputy Secretary of Labor and acting Secretary of Labor. An invaluable resource, EdTech: Revolution in Education is the latest and most comprehensive report showing how America can maintain its position as the innovation leader of the world.

UST Global believes STEM education and workforce development are critical to America’s future, stating that 15 out of 20 high growth careers of this decade require signifi cant STEM skills. According to the EDTech: Revolution in Education 2013 report, however, less than one third of the population has any exposure to core STEM education. UST Global has active initiatives with Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Greece and the UK to provide technology training to thousands of their citizens. For example, UST is currently training 30,000 youths expected to graduate with a degree in information technology. UST Global is also exploring the application of technology-driven delivery of training for U.S. veterans.

Speaking at the conference, UST Global CEO Sajan Pillai said, “In this technology-driven global business environment, there is a tremendous need for talent. The challenge we have right now is the limited availability of talent ready to leverage this opportunity. As business leaders, we expect to fi nd highly motivated, skilled individuals who are able to drive business innovation and revenue. But, we o en fi nd that this is not the case.”

He continued, “As a market leader, excelling in the training and development of talent is expected from us. We take this responsibility seriously. At UST Global, we have taken on the task of training local talent in countries that have a high population and limited job opportunities. We are very proud of our success in Mexico and look forward to replicating this across the globe. Private enterprises have to think beyond immediate gains and look at training and development as a long term investment in our community.”

UST Global was born out of a need for talent arbitrage, and the company realizes the challenge of fi nding employable talent. The EDTech: Revolution in Education 2013 report addresses this problem. UST Global is a sponsor of this publication based on its contributions to advance innovations in education to close the gap between STEM skill demand and human capital resources. This report seeks to close that gap by exploring educational technology resources and strategies from kindergarten to higher education to lifelong learning opportunities. Information technology will become a key ingredient for STEM progress.

Former Mexican President Vicente Fox Visits UST Global to Announce IT Innovation Partnership

Former Mexican president Vicente Fox, right, visited UST Global’s headquarters in Aliso Viejo on Monday, July 16, 2012 to announce a partnership between the IT services company and Centro Fox, a presidential library and learning center dedicated to leadership development throughout Mexico and Latin America. At le is Sajan Pillai, CEO of UST Global.

The partnership will result in the expansion of UST Global’s IT services to support the Latin American operations of international businesses, as well as local organizations in the region, the company said. It plans to create an infrastructure of new development centers, and has begun providing technical training for thousands of Mexico’s workers.

“UST Global is partnering with Centro Fox in order to help accomplish nothing less than the transformation of my country into a world-class technology economy,” said Fox.

Sajan Pillai, CEO of UST Global, has joined the board of directors of Centro Fox.

Why Participate?“The desire to create a program that connects to the heart and soul for fundamental social change. Knowing that there are 160,000 IT jobs in our country and that by 2018, the current majority of Americans under the age of 18 will be the minority. How do we build the quality scale? Leading high-technology companies need employee diversity to remain globally competitive and innovative. Diversity leads to better group decisions, creativity, and innovation, as people from diff erent backgrounds bring diff erent skills and ideas to teams and companies. A diverse perspective creates enhanced market opportunities and better ideas. [ix]

A recent industry report by Gartner estimated that by the year 2012, teams with greater gender diversity (when compared to all-male teams) will be twice as likely to exceed performance expectations. [x]

Gender diversity in the high-tech workforce fuels problem solving and innovation – the driving force of technology. [xi]

Companies tend to re-create social inequality through organizational practices that are non-inclusive. [xii]

The criterion used in hiring and retaining workers is heavily dependent upon existing organizational composition. [xiii]

A non-inclusive organizational practice sends a message that diversity isn’t truly valued by an organization. The absence of well-managed diversity initiatives can lead to frustration and turnover for women and people of color. [xiv]
