Say “i caN dO this” out loud every day. Write it on a giant stickie note and put it on your mirror. Say it every morning and evening.

NOte: It’s not enough to believe you can – and there will be lots of times you don’t believe you can – but you have to tell yourself that you caN do this regardless of how you Feel.

Vocal practice: (Use Singer’s Gift Warmups)

Do 30 minutes every day (20 min warmups, 10 min song practice).

lyric writing practice: (Use Song Creator Daily Pages sheet).

Write one title per day and write lyrics for 5 minutes every day. This practice of writing every day even if it’s a small amount of time keeps your brain focused on writing and it goes to work on ideas even when you are not focused on it.

Keep a pad and pencil by your bedside as you may wake up with song ideas running through your head. Jot everything down just as soon as the ideas come (you won’t remember them later – trust me on this one!).

your Mindset practice:

Visualize your career for 5 minutes every day. See yourself performing on a stage you’d love to perform on. Make it as real as you can – what are you wearing, who is in your band, see your fans

take one action once a week toward your goals:

W hat holds us back in our lives is our fear. And sometimes, when you take a very close look, you find out that your

fears aren’t exactly what you thought they were.

Our deepest fear – is not that we are inadequate – our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

It’s our light – not our darkness – that most frightens us.

We ask ourselves – who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?

But actually – who are you not to be? YOU are a child of the universe.

You’re playing small doesn’t serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.

We are all meant to shine – as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of the God (or say Universe) that is within us. It’s not just in some of us – it’s in all of us.

And as we let our own light shine – we

subconsciously give other people permission to do the same.

As we are liberated from our own fear – our presence automatically liberates others.

So it’s holy work to move past your own fear.

It doesn’t just help you – it helps the world.

9. Dress the part, live the part – because you are 24/7 marketing yourself – and there’s a lot of competition out there.

7. Never, never, ever burn bridges – there’s absolutely no reason to be vindictive or look down on anyone in the business – because hopefully you will have a long career and everyone’s working hard just like you.

as some of you may know, I am in the process of writing a book about vocal health. It’s all about how to

keep your voice super healthy, avoid hoarseness and vocal loss, what to do when it breaks down and how to prevent vocal problems and injury on tour.

But also included under the subject of vocal health is the performance anxiety that rears its head for at one time or another for every artist. Most artists, being the sensitive perfectionist’s that they are, tend to suffer from the pressures of performing and it has nothing to do with how talented they are. Often the most talented suffer more.

One’s psychological attitude can have a big influence over how badly one suffers, as well as their physical & vocal health. In my book-in-progress, I offer up some solutions that can turn things around rather quickly in some cases. From homeopathic solutions to setting personal goals (and not thinking about your audience) to changing one’s attitude about performing, can reap benefits.

HERE’S AN ExCERPT fROM THE CHAPTER ON “STAGEfRIGHT”:

There is fear and anxiety about performing and then there is stage fright. Stagefright is when you are absolutely terrified of the stage and have not performed much. It also has to do with low self esteem or too high of a bar that you set for

yourself. Perfectionists suffer more than others. In most cases I also find that musicians/artists who have stage fright are often underprepared in their craft.

I will address stage fright more deeply in my book and if you suffer make a note if any of the above is true about you and go to work on it. You are welcome to set up a session with me (see the end of this article) to dig into it more deeply. But do read on as everything below regarding performance anxiety relates to you as well.

Fear and anxiety about performing are natural emotions that come to performing artists and vary in relation to how important the performance is. If it’s your television debut, it’s going to be tougher going than if they’ve had several performances on the tube. A competition tends to make singers more nervous than if they are simply performing their own material before and audience (who already loves them) is coming to see them. You can see how different situations will ramp up the nerves more than others.

– we then start the process of “over-dubbing” (at my studio) the layers of guitars and keys as well as vocals and backgrounds. Then we mix (at a mixing studio – takes approx 1.5 days per song) and master (the process of smoothing out the volumes and overall EQ on all 5 songs).

Another way to record is to work with a producer who builds tracks for your

songs. I use this process for artists I write with who are looking for cool electronic sounding instruments. Typically this path is for dance music (ala Lady Gaga), R & B – or for those with a tighter budget who can’t afford a band (more expensive).

A Producer will build tracks in the studio using electronic drums and instruments. This usually cuts costs down as you don’t have to rehearse or pay for musicians. Some producers record real drums first and then build the track also keeping costs down (some Rock and Pop producers work this way).

Get your own studio for home recording. This is only good for demo’s

and not for “record quality”. This can work great for tech minded artists who are into learning recording software. However, I find that most folks don’t learn how to do it well enough to make records – and it’s better for demo-ing. But you need to demo new songs as well as record so I suggest that every artist have a home studio.

To get the right equipment, consult a professional and then hire them to hook it up for you and teach you how to use it!

INSIDER TIP: Recording with a band is the more expensive way to record. Some artists raise money to make a record with pre-sales or donations.

INSIDER TIP: Sometimes producers will do what’s called a “Spec Deal”. They will work for a small fee in exchange for a % of the profit (or points on the sale of the record) should you become famous or get signed. This is not as common as it used to be and is the exception. If you go this route, be sure you listen to recordings the producer has produced to hear the “sound” and “style” he/she creates.

INSIDER TIP: Recording outside of NY or LA tends to be less expensive as studios and musicians are cheaper. Nashville is known as the “Demo-City” since it is filled with songwriters who demo all the time costs are lower. However if you are looking to do a pop or rock project I say NY or LA is better suited for your sound (Nashville musicians tend to give a country sound even when playing pop).

INSIDER TIP: For my artists who are on a super tight budget, I work with a demo producer who builds tracks (much cheaper than doing a commercial quality record) and then I record their vocals at my studio. Or I may do a professional quality demo of their voice with one instrument (piano or guitar) – which is the best way to demo on a super tight budget.

T he truth is there are many different paths in the music industry. It’s all about finding which one is right for you & developing a Strategy.

Whether you are looking for a record deal or simply looking to sell your own records or perform and develop a following, the music business is a complex and confusing industry that requires more than casual knowledge to navigate a career. In this “Designing Your Strategy” overview, I am hoping to help you gain clarity and a figure out what path is right for you.

Here I’ll present some typical Game Plans and outline the basic stuff as well as include some Strategies. I’ll start off with details about getting a record deal and the basics of what the industry looks for.

Here’s what the industry doesn’t tell you:

There is a certain blend of features and characteristics they take in to consideration when signing an artist – it isn’t just about talent – although talent is absolutely required.

One of the most crucial elements a new artist has to deal with in today’s industry is the fact that artist development funds are pretty much

non-existent. Whereas record companies used to take on a certain amount of artists to “develop”, they now are only interested in signing artists they can be absolutely certain of. This means the job of development falls more upon the artists themselves. Also because the cost of recording is less than it used to be and most artists make “record quality” recordings, the competition is more fierce.

Before you present yourself to any company or as a DIY’er – is it important that you have the following:

1. 5 song EP (professionally produced) of your own original music with your own “sound”.

2. A killer live show.

3. Great photos, Image, Web page/site and Story (see Insider Tip below).

First, I’d like to make the distinction between an artist going for a record deal or a DIY’er. Both are artists that have written at least 20 some songs and recorded a commercial record of at least 5-7 songs. An artist going for a record deal it is generally recommended to not exploit their songs on the internet before approaching a label with new material and a DIY’er releases their songs on their own. Some DIY’ers go for a deal but they won’t garner much attention from their independent efforts unless they sell upwards of 50,000 records.

BEFORE APPROACHING A MUSIC MANAGER YOU MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING:

A “no-apology” well recorded and produced EP of your music (your own original songs).

Professional looking photos of you or your band.

A basic website with your own URL of your stage name. It is important that your website is regularly updated and current. Ghost town sites are a big turn off and will not be visited twice.

A well written bio that describes your music and highlights your accomplishments.

A mailing list to capture people who visit your site and whom you meet.

INSIDER TIP: Hostbaby.com is an inexpensive service (a $20 monthly fee) for musicians to set up their own website.

INSIDER TIP: I recommend splurging to have your bio written by a professional music writer/critic. This will speak volumes for you and your music and help capture serious attention.

INSIDER TIP: Having a strong list is crucial to building your fan base and career. I recommend Constant Contact for Ezine templates and a place to store your mailing list. Folks can Opt in to your list from your website directly into your database at Constant Contact for easy managing.

INSIDER TIP: Find a good photographer who shoots music artists - do not use a head shot photographer. Exchange photos of other artists that you like so you can discuss composition and ideas before the shoot.

FINDING A MANAGER THAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU – AND YOUR MUSIC.

A good manager is hard to find. And the truth is finding the right manager is much easier once you have tried managing your career on your own for several months, if not years.

The best way to know what qualities to look for are from a first-hand understanding of the job yourself. And remember the time to work with a manager is when you have a product and are ready to go sell it in the marketplace and/or get signed.

Most music managers fall into these basic categories:

Friends and acquaintances that artists know and trust – responsible,

business minded and willing to part with their time because they believe in you.

Professional music executives, or industry people, who do music

management full-time or do music business related work for a living and have connections, experience and leverage that make them able to help aspiring artists.

Mom‐agers and Dad‐agers.

Wealthy individuals who love music and want to be in the music business

for any number of reasons. Let’s just call them investors/managers.

The best way to meet managers, if you don’t have many connections,

is face to face at music conferences and music industry events. For conferences you can read bios ahead of time and Google photos so you can spot them. Know who you’re approaching and why. Read up on their history in the biz (Wikipedia, Google etc.) Knowing who you want to work with puts you “in” the industry.

Another way is to research online and approach managers you are

interested in working with directly (in person is always better). Again, knowing who you want to work with puts you “in” the industry.

Other artists and people in the industry are another source for referrals.
