AWARDS NIGHT
Congratulations to the prize winners from our Awards Night and Sports Awards Ceremony. In my address on the Awards Night, I gave a brief summary of the many highlights which made up our school year. These included -
• Visual Art success in the Regional Creative Generation competition
• A long list of performing arts achievements – Beijing Olympic Orchestra,
Fanfare, Showcase and Eisteddfod wins
• The introduction of Events Management as part of the Tourism subject
• Catering4Futures achievements in many prestigious events in Mackay
• The highlights of the Anzac tour and the opening of the Anzac Garden
• The dedication of the Tony Willis Chemistry Honour Board
• The support and progress of 54 students in the Special Education Unit
• Recognition of individual winners in competitions
I also spoke of the need for Governments to increase funding to schools, quoting countries such as Finland which dedicate an extremely high percentage of their budget to education and consistently score highly on international test for their students. As this is my last Awards Night at North High, I reflected on the magnificent support that I have been fortunate enough to receive during my eleven years here. I have been privileged to work with a dedicated band of par-ents and supporters, along with so many loyal and committed staff members. It is impossible for me to know all students personally, but as I look back over the years, I can really appreciate the respect and consideration which I have received from the students. Awards Night is a significant event in our school life and guests have commented on the very smooth running of the night, the exceptional work of the student presenters and the depth of talent and achievement evident in the award winners. Well done to all involved. Linda Boyle PRINCIPAL

YEAR EIGHTS TAKE FAIRYTALES TO FITZGERALD
During term 3, Year 8 students at Mackay North studied traditional storytelling. After
completing their oral assessment, a presentation of fairytales, some Year 8 students visited
Fitzgerald School to put their storytelling skills into action.
Their traditional and fractured fairytales were presented to an attentive and eager audience,
consisting of Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students. The high school students performed with
confidence and passion, while representing their school with enthusiasm, enjoyment and pride.
Presentation of their stories involved the use of a variety of storytelling techniques including:
drama, storyboards, Power Points, puppets, felt boards and illustrations. The Fitzgerald
students thoroughly enjoyed listening to stories like: Little Red Riding Hood, Pinocchio, The
Emperor’s New Clothes, Three Billy Goats Gruff and Snow White.
It was a great opportunity for real life learning; young children being entertained and educated
through storytelling. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for both the primary and
secondary students involved.
Congratulations and thanks to all 16 students: Thomas Raines, Milan Stanimirovic, David
Lamperd, Rachel Bishop, Amanda Terry, Georgina Kelleher, Subarna Raut, Lydia Crothers-
Stomps, Rachel Demspter, Imagion Carlyle-Brauer, Georgia Rosier, Olivia Attard and Susie
Richards.

SENIOR ARTISTS & ART ON DISPLAY
The Year 12 Art Exhibition held at the Mackay City Library was an outstanding success. It was attended by some of Mackay’s “Who’s Who” of the Art Scene including Leonne Sneddon (artist) and Kathy Knezevic (Gallery Owner). Both were delighted with the work and commented on the high quality of skill and intelligent development of themes.
With lots of glamorous gowns and North High’s String Quartet creating the ambience, it was a classy finale for the very talented group.
Three students were recognized by Tracey Heathwood (Education Officer from Artspace) with Encouragement Awards – Tanesha Termine, Sacha Wohlfahrt and Isere Meaney.
These three students, and more, plan to study art at various tertiary institutions around the country.
Congratulations to the Senior Art students of 2008 and their teacher Ms Gorman.
