ELEMENTS

Relationship :The windows are intentionally designed to be low and within the bedroom and kitchen space so that the elderly confined to the bed can watch the passing of time while the couple enjoying their meal in the kitchen can wave and greet their neighbours pass-ing through the pathway.

Consideration :The low kitchen wall allows for the resident to have full views of the space and outside, to avoid feel-ing enclosed even in a small space

The different exterior wall colors distinguish the different unit types within the building

UNIT TYPES

Assisted Living Units

The focus on the comprehensive studio this semester was on the theme of ‘Elemental En-counters’ whereby singular details hold genera-tive power to impact the development of spatial organization in plan, section, mass and volume in response to the design challenges in housing the elderly. Typical housing studios often view the‘unit’ as an irreducible cell. Nevertheless, this project approach the elemental of the ‘kitchen’, the ‘door’ and the ‘wall’ as three key spaces to promote interaction in multigenerational living and thus possess the strength to generate archi-tecture which can impact day to day living.

Inspired by the site in Austin, Texas - this project draws reference from the relevance of courtyards in warm climate to propose a scheme based on the rationalization of the Mexican hacienda and the economic and social value in Accesory Dwelling Units in order to develop a new model for multigenerational housing.

Elemental Studies

Progressive model making studies allowed for experimentation of different elemental details within the housing unit. Materials, textures, colors and composi-tion within the architectural elements were explored in relation to the human scale and the program of assisted living.

Final Unit Cluster ModelMaterials used for the model indicate their construction typology and relationship between parts to the program. The materials used were stained balsa wood, corrugated cardboard, craft paper,

foam core and medium density fiber board

Increase Density

Increasing Density

There are two levels of density explored in the project which reflect both the spatial and atmospheric experience while still keeping within the theme of ‘Elemental Encounters’. The scale of the proposed project is intentionally kept smaller but in order to maintain the validity of the pro-posal, this project explores the changes in construction system which can allow for increased densification. A maximum of 4 storey walk-up is allowable without the need for elevator shafts and ADA accesibility is still provided on the ground floor.

GROW ON: Detroitspeculative networks in the sharing economyfall 2014 graduate design studiocritic :assistant professor kathy velikov

This project looks at the rise of the sharing econ-omy introduced by Jeremy Rifkin in “Zero Mar-ginal Cost Society”. Cities today have largely be-come part of a network of resources and human capital. The project examines this new landscape as a model for rebuilding Detroit through the mode of speculative design as defined by design-ers Anthony Dunne and Fiona Raby.

There are three components to the design ; firstly a mapping study of the urban typologies of Midtown Detroit in a collective book titled ‘Mid-town Morphologies’. Then, the work takes the form of documentary filmmaking to understand the nature of artist collaboratives in the sharing economy of Detroit from the ground.

Finally, by building on a set of value codes as design tools, this project takes the form of a prototypical living space and artist gallery within an active greenhouse. Small residential pods are nested in between bands of productive green spaces and artist exhibition galleries. This hybrid of programs aims to speculate on the relation-ships that exist between food cooperatives and artists collaboratives in shaping the city. There-fore, the residents of the Woodward Collaborative are not just casual inhabitants of Midtown, but pioneers in manifesting the sharing economy as a new model for rebuilding Detroit.
