I wish I knew whom to credit — one of the best sermons I’ve ever heard. It was a Holy Week sermon entitled, “You Were There!” … a play on words of the spiritual that asks the question “Were you there?” The preacher painted the scene of the crucifixion, then switched to first person accounts of being there. First, was the centurion whose terrible task was the execution detail. Grim work to be sure. but that day when they hung the sign, “The King of the Jews” on the cross, they did not hear the usual rant of curses as was the custom. Instead they heard Jesus say, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do!” Jesus looked the centurion in the eyes. later in the day Jesus cried again, “It is finished!” and died. The centurion sensed that this was not a cry of failure, but of completion. Then the centurion proclaimed, “That man is the son of God!” Then the preacher’s voice inflection changed to depict Mary. He began to describe the thoughts of Mary, the mother of Jesus, as she remembered the different scenes from the life of Jesus. He placed Mary at the feet of the cross, the worst day of her life. In the midst of the agony of that day, Jesus is pictured as noticing Mary and stating, “Mother, behold your son! John, behold your mother and care for her.” In the midst of his agony and suffering, Jesus looked at her and cared for her. The preacher has Mary replying, “That man loves me and cares for me!” The preacher then places barabbas at the cross. barabbas, the son of a rabbi, hated rome and everything about the oppression they imposed upon Israel. He had fought them with everything he had. He deserved to be on the cross that day. but by custom the roman sought to appease the Jews by releasing one criminal. This time they chose barabbas. He knew he was the guilty one. Seeing Jesus on the cross, barabbas said, “That man is dying in my place!” The preacher then summarized the sermon by observing that the whole of the Gospel is found in these state- ments: this man is the son of God; that man loves me and cares for me; and that man is dying in my place. According to the creative preacher, it is not a question of “Were you there?” It is a proclamation of the gospel to say, “You were there!” Join us for all the activities of Holy Week! 2015 STEPHEN MINISTRY u P D A T E We are so excited to bring Stephen Ministry to FuMCT! You may have groaned when you wrote the check (or will write the check) to the IrS this month. Start planning now to reduce your tax burden for 2015 by considering gifts of appreciated stocks, bonds and other securities to the church. You can often avoid the capital gain tax on the appreciated amount of the securities gifted. If you itemize deductions, you can also take a deduction of the fair market value of the gift.

The church can liquidate the asset and use it to develop and enhance min-istries like our involvement in love, InC. (in the name of Christ).

Every day, men and women come to the church looking for help with fi-nances—basic needs like food, cleaning supplies, and money for gas and power bills. The church puts them in touch with love InC. The organization screens the participants by checking with other local non-profits to ensure

that the applicant is not being helped elsewhere.

love, InC. has a yearlong program that helps the recipient learn money management skills, life skills that will not only set them back on the right track, but will teach them how to be successful in the future. our church hosts the life skills training on Thursday nights for 30 families and provides childcare for the participants. In-centives are offered for attendance.

The Discussions Class, a young adult Sunday School class, is helping to bridge some of the gaps in funding that love, InC. faces. For example, participants cannot buy home cleaning supplies and personal items like deodor-ant and toothpaste with government SnAP funds. This class is providing a “store” where love, InC. participants can shop for these supplies, using the incentive funds they receive by attending the weekly programs.

Discussions was impressed by the accountability that love, InC. demands of its participants and by the empha-sis on bible study in the weekly program.

If you would like to know more about love, InC. and its compassionate financial planning ministry, call the church office. As you make your financial plans for 2015, consider how you could ease your tax burden and provide financial resources to this important mission that helps the truly needy of our community.

Legacy giving Funds 2015 Budget shortFaLLsThe earnings from some of our endowment funds have been tapped this Spring to sustain and implement vital ministries. When you receive a card from the Card Care Team or hear a beautiful anthem from the choir or see our youth boarding buses for their big Stuff summer trip, thank those who gave to the church with a purpose to support future programs.

In the first two months of 2015, the Matthew 25 funds that we use to help people with needs for gas to get to the doctor or a Tuscaloosa Transit bus pass to get to work have been depleted. Tennie Davidson, a long time member of our church, named the church in her will, setting up an endowment that we tapped for $10,000 to fund the Matthew 25 ministry.

Praise God for the generous spirit of those who give so we can continue our important work.

Children born in 2014 (Jan. - Dec.) and their parents are invited to attend a Traditions worship service of their choice and be intro-duced to the congregation. The reception will allow time to meet other families and have a keepsake photograph made in the court-yard and/or sanctuary. Please come and let us celebrate the addition of your newest fam-ily member. Siblings are invited too! Contact Sandra reed for more information at [email protected].

Caregivers grouPAre you a caregiver for someone who suffers from Alzheimers or other age-related dementia, for someone suffer-ing from a chronic or terminal illness, or any kind of long-term physical or mental disability? If you are, you know how challenging life can be, and how often you seem to be living what has been called the “36 Hour Day.” The physical, emotional, financial and other challenges can be overwhelming, especially because they are so often confronted alone, or even kept secret. If you are a caregiver, you and your family need support, advice, encourage-ment, experience, strength and hope more than anyone.

The good news is that you are not alone! There is a large and growing group here at First united Methodist Church that wants to help you cope. our aim is to reach out to all those in our church and our community who are caregiv-ers for aging parents and other loved ones. Some are just now facing the prospects of becoming caregivers, and may be overwhelmed with fears, uncertainties and questions. others may have lived in difficult circumstances, but successfully, for years, and may have a great deal of wisdom and experience to share. Still others may feel lost and exhausted in the middle of it all.

Whatever your needs or situation, we invite all to join us on Sunday mornings in April (12, 19 & 26), either at 9:00 or 11:00 Am, in the Parker fireside room. Each week we will be sharing our experiences, our strength and hope. And soon we will be planning some other social gatherings in homes and about town. We offer mutual sup-port and encouragement to all. If you are interested in joining the group simply contact Jimmy mixson ([email protected]) or Susan Kizziah ([email protected]).

This past February, we celebrated the tenth anniversary of the bridge with a memory and music filled flash-back. A lot has changed since that first worship service in Callahan 10 years ago. People have come and gone. Children have grown up (and now participate in the service). new music has become popular. Technology has changed. And, we have become quite comfortable in our "new" venue, Chitwood Hall. but, with all the empha-sis on the changes and reflections on our history, we were quickly reminded how, most importantly, some things have not changed. We seek to provide a bridge between people and God. Jesus provided us with just that, and he also provided us the model for our doing so. The importance of love, grace and forgiveness are a hallmark of our faith and our mission. We strive to continue to provide a place and a means for people who might not otherwise feel comfortable or connected to God in a traditional worship environment to experience, nurture, and share a relationship with Him. thank you for supporting the bridge, whether with your attendance or your prayers (or both). meanwhile, we'll keep "bridging." how about you?

rev. cooper Shattuck, associate Pastor& Lisa waldrop, Bridge Worship leader

We will rehearse on Saturday, April 4 at 10:00 Am, and we would love participation for all three services! Contact [email protected]!

special opportunity

on March 14-18, the Student Minis-try staff took 30 students to one7 in Charlotte, nC. We were incredibly ex-

cited to go with our students to serve and share the Gospel in word and deed! We are so proud of our students for sacrificing part of their spring break to make an impact for God’s Kingdom! God has moved in incredible ways in our youth group this semester, and these students sacrificing their vacation time exemplifies the change that is taking place in their hearts due to a relationship with Jesus. Many of the students in our youth group have shown a heart to serve Jesus by serving people on this mission trip; through their eagerness to serve the homeless in Tuscaloosa through bus Stop Café; and through their everyday lives. our prayer is that the Holy Spirit would continue to move in these students’ lives and bring them ever nearer to Christ. Please pray with us that God would move and change students’ lives right before our eyes.

Hello Everyone! My name is Charlee rodgers and I have joined the FuMCT Student Ministry staff. Christy Copeland and I will continue to work to-gether organizing and scheduling student ministry events for the church. Preston Adair began this job four years ago and has made stepping into this position easy. My family and I moved to Tuscaloosa seven years ago after my husband Mike took a position with the university of Alabama Sys-tem office. Though we had planned to visit many churches in this area, we knew First united Methodist Church would be our home after our first few visits. Mike and I have three children; Maddie who is 20 and is a sopho-more at uA, Mary Calloway a 6th grader at rock Quarry Middle School, and barret a 4th grader at rock Quarry Elementary. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to work with Christy, brian, Kyle and your children!
