Stereotypes: How Media perceives Upper Class and Working Class

They are seen to have lots of money and are well off. They look presentable, so they own expensive/beautiful

clothes and jewellery. Big, happy families. Good jobs- father’s work in offices for big businesses in

London. Mother usually stays at home to have quality time with

children. They go to fun events- dinner parties, days out… They have good close family friends which could also be

working with the father. Polite.

Upper Class- Positives

Snooty personality- look down on people. Rude to people who they think are lower classes than

themselves. Don’t want their children to mix with working class children. Can be over-protective of their children. Often spoil their children, so they expect that everything in

life is like that. Can be stubborn. Argumentative.

Upper class- negative

o Down to earth honest people.o Family oriented.o Have large families and relations.o Work extremely hard, usually in rural industries.o Fathers try their best to provide for the family.o Are careful with their money.o Are willing to give to charities or the poor.o Mothers stay at home to help the children with their well-

being/education, or mothers can work to help out their partner.

o Children can sometimes be expected to work, and they can live in rough conditions.

Working class- Positive

o Could be jealous of the Upper class.o Could be rude or argumentative to some others who aren’t

nice to them.o Are treated like dirt.o Might not have many friends.o Are looked down upon. o Could be seen as never having clean clothes or close

washing facilities.o Could have very basic houses which aren’t that stable/safe.

Working class- Negative
