FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Medical Applications Design Wins Multiple Awards at

International Competition

Sterling Surfaces garners honors for Best Countertop Design, Best

Commercial/Institutional Design and second place for Best Non-Traditional Design at

industry-wide trade show.

Sterling, MA – Sterling Surfaces, the solid surface fabrication division of Sterling-based

Kitchen Associates, came away with two top design and fabrication prizes and a second place

finish at an international design competition for industry professionals. The projects, which

utilized Corian solid surface in their construction, were part of a larger project of specialty

fabrication for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, NY, and for work done

with Hickory Business Furniture, a Furniture Brands business unit based in Hickory, NC.

The Best Countertop Design was awarded for a series of 18 surgeons’ scrub sink installed in

the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Fabrication of the sinks required specialized skills

in mold making, thermoforming of solid surface and CNC (computer numerically controlled)

router technology.

A First Place award was also received in the Best Commercial/ Institutional category for the

2005 Surface Fabrication Industry journal Annual Design Competition. The joint HBF /Sterling

Surface design features Corian solid surface used in conference and work tables specifically for

boardrooms and similar corporate work areas. In the Best Non- Traditional category, the HBF/

Barbara Barry/ Sterling Surface end table design featuring the organic egg shape took Second

Place.

"When you consider the international scope of these competitions, it is especially exciting to

win these awards,” stated Jon Olson, Production Manager for Sterling Surfaces. “The timing

makes these awards relevant because solid surface materials, like Corian, are quickly

becoming the surfacing product of choice to address infection control issues in medical

facilities."

Companies from all over the world submitted entries showcasing innovations in design and
