    Keys for Lead Official

Lead must work ball side Be8er early than late

Work as wide as the ball Work outsidein in rela=on to ball Posi=on adjust as necessary

When rota=ng keep eyes on compe==vematchup Eyes should not look ahead to matchup

that should already be covered by Center

If, while rota=ng, there is a quick shot, drive,or skip pass stop rota=on and go back

The closer the Lead is to closedown, theworse angle he/she has for rebounding foulsand therefore must trust C/T to see thosetypes of plays

Lead is responsible for lane viola=ons, but, must be prepared to assist, when workingoutside, on three point shots on strong side. This becomes a tworeferee play.

Lead should work a step off the end line as areference point

Lead should look for the ball to stop and/orpause when ball is opposite, above, or at thefree throw line extended to ini=ate a rota=onfrom close down

On drives to the basket the Lead must focuson his defender, which is usually thesecondary defender on the play

Most plays, Lead ini=ates setup in eitherclose down (if ball is coming up the oppositeside or middle of court) or wide angle (if ballis coming up strong side of court).

    Keys for Trail Official

Posi=on yourself so that youkeep the 10 players and yourpartners in view

When officia=ng the dribblerfrom backcourt to front courtmaintain a 2+2 posi=on (twosteps back, two steps outsidedribbler)

    Trial should primarily workoutside in

When ball is pinched onsideline in front court, strongside, Trail can work inside outto maintain good angle

Trail should stay outside thenear laneline extended

Trail should officiate over thedribblers outside shoulder intransi=on

When the ball moves to Csprimary, eyes should godiagonal (through lane to lowblock on Cs side)

Stay in on rebounding do notleak out

Trail marks 3point shots fromstrong side corner to oppositelane line above the key

On a dribble drive to the basket from from Tsprimary T should stay with the play to the basket.

T may step down or in to maintain angle on the playIf Ts primary defender is beaten (X1):

The secondary defender who engages in theplay, either Cs defender (X2) or Ls defender(X3) will assume priority on any contact on the

    dribbler.

C should also insure that if X2 jumpsout to defend the ball there is not

    LThis is a trouble area

    for the T and C:

C must be availableto accept the ball/

defender as it getspinched/ or a trap

    occurs along Cs

    sideline.

Once T recognizes Chas accepted the

    play, T can rotate to

    new C

Lead must recognizethis trouble play and

    rotate to strong side

to put the crew in the

    best posi=on

    X Defenders

    No=ce that C has

    responsibility from

    sideline to sideline

    when quick pass from

    back court to mid

    court area takes place.

    Trail would not have a

    good look from

    behind that play.

    C should move with

    the players as ball is

    transi=oning up the

    court.

    C

When the ball is passed to player in front of C (at freethrow lineextended) it is most advantageous for C to step DOWN to get an angle

    rather than immediately step UP.

By stepping DOWN one step the C is s=ll in a posi=on to assist withac=on in the key area as well as create a good angle on primary

    defenders.

C should maintain a flat posi=on (shoulders parallel to sideline)C can, when ready, step up to adjust angle when there is not acompe==ve matchup on the ball.

C must not step up when ball is closely defended as this may cause C tobe temporarily straightlined on his/her compe==ve matchup.

C should rotate up when ready even if Lead has already rotated to Csside

This illustra=on is intended to show that Cposi/on adjust(move) to get good angles (looks) on jump shots (across the

    lane) and rebounding ac=on.

C should be in the best posi=on to see between defendersand shooters for contact on jump shots

C should be in the best posi=on to see between offensiveand defensive rebounders for illegal ac=on.
