Pirates TodayToday differ greatly from the pirates of the

past.

Today they have speed boats instead of sailing ships and advanced weaponry instead of swords. The image of these pirates is often misconstrued because of the media view of pirates.

PiracyMost of the modern pirates patrol the seas off

the coast of Africa near Somalia instead of Caribbean.

The piracy became more intense in the early years of the 21st century when disgruntled Somali fishermen were angered about the increase of commercial fishing in their waters.

Motives of PiracyThe main motive of the Somali pirates is

money. In the past three year the pirates have made

an estimated $30 Million from conquering approximately 14 different ships.

The pirates hold long deliberations in order to get what they want and as they talk the ships and crew remain under the pirates control.

Perspectives There are different perspectives on the

Somali pirates these perspectives include:The pirates perspective is that their lively hood

as former fishermen was being threatened because of the rise in foreign commercial fishing in their waters.

The outside perspective is that the pirates are menaces and are causing chaos in the sea.

Effects on GlobalizationThe amount of money that pirates make effect

globalization. The pirates intake a vast amount of money from many different countries.

Piracy in one area could hinder trade in that region. The trading ships would fear the pirates much like old trading vessels feared pirates in the Caribbean. Countries would not like to trade there because of the pirates might take over their ships then the country would lose money.

Some countries may form anti-pirate alliances to combat the pirates. Just like the US and France have an alliance against the pirates.

Solving the Pirate ProblemThe United States Navy has ships patrolling

the oceans surrounding Somalia searching for the elusive Somali pirates.

The pirates are very difficult to locate because of the vast expanse of oceans that they roam.

Famous PiratesOn April 8, 2009 four of the pirates boarded

the cargo vessel Maersk Alabama and took Captain Richard Phillips and the crew of the ship hostage.

Captain Phillips allowed the crew and ship to be set free and he remained in the custody of the buccaneers aboard on of the ships covered lifeboats.

Famous Pirates (cont’d)When the lifeboat ran out of fuel it was towed

by the USS Bainbridge with the pirates and captain still aboard.

Navy Seals were set up on the stern of the Bainbridge with snipers pointed directly at the pirates.

While one pirate was on board the Bainbridge three Navy seals fired shots and killed the three remaining pirates on the lifeboat and rescued the captain.
