Program Notes

A Million Suns at Midnight was commissioned by the Arkansas State Band and

Orchestra Association and the Arkansas Choral Directors Assocation for the 2000

Arkansas All-State Convention. Though dark and dramatic in character, it is

ultimately a hopeful, optimistic work, evoking the struggles of humanity from our

beginnings (“listen to womb’s whisper”) to grow, achieve, and evolve, ultimately

overcoming our fear (and its most common manifestation: violence ) to transcend our

physical and mental boundaries.

The arrival of the the year 2000 provided a potent marker for this transcendence.

Societal and technological evolution throughout the world is accelerating at an

exponential pace, and we appear to be on the threshold of truly revolutionary changes

in the way the human species (co)exists. Progress in genetic manipulation and

nanotechnology, along with the increasing integration of computers into our lives, will

bring heretofore unimagined powers of creativity and destruction to common

individuals. We must all then become more than common individuals. We must

transcend our fear, “unleash our senseless sight,” and ensure that the million suns at

midnight are not those of fiery destruction, but of bright hope.

About the Composer

Steven Bryant (b. 1972, Little Rock, AR, USA) is an active composer and conductor

with a varied catalog, including works for orchestra, wind ensemble, electronic and

electroacoustic creations, chamber music, and music for the web.

His first orchestral work, Loose Id for Orchestra, hailed by celebrated composer Samuel

Adler as “orchestrated like a virtuoso,” was premiered by The Juilliard Symphony and

recorded by the Bowling Green Philharmonia for Albany Records. His orchestral work

Alchemy in Silent Spaces, commissioned by James DePreist and The Juilliard School,

was premiered by the Juilliard Orchestra, in Alice Tully Hall, in May 2006. Since its

2008 premiere, his seminal work for large ensemble and electronics Ecstatic Waters has

become the most performed work of its kind in the world.
