War of th

e worlds

came out in 2005

and was a

thriller/sc

i-fi.

Mise-en-scene: The high mass or army personal in one area emphasises the seriousness of the calamity that is about it occur. This will build suspense for the audience because they’ll be asking them questions for example ‘will the people survive’, ‘will they be able to stop the threat.

War of the worlds

Camera angles: Spielberg uses a long shot to show the width of how many shoulders are in that one small area. This is effective because all though you cant see the soldiers full body you can see their heads thus giving the audience an idea of how many personal are there.

Colour: In this scene of the film there is a burst of a dull but light colour over the threat. The key light is shining on the ‘head’ of the threat, the back light is sky behind and the light shining on the pavement is the filler light. Spielberg may have done this to represent something mysterious emerging from the distance. He didn’t want to reveal it all at once so he covered it with the light to create some sort of suspense on the audience behalf.

Camera angles: The wide shot shows how the area is desolate and everyone is astonished by this new threat that has appeared. This gives the audience a perspective on how they might have felt.

Location: The film is set in the Northern states of America, typical sci fi/ disaster films seem to be set in the northern states, the majority New York. Spielberg could be trying to connate that America/ New York is the capital of corruption.
