SFO People Mover

The major SFO Terminals and Passenger Support facilities are tied together by the automated guideway shuttle PEOPLE

MOVER tramway. The three major domestic terminals, the International Terminal, Rental Car Areas and Central Parking

Areas are linked by the elevated, articulated, bus-tired, computer controlled system. PBQD were the design engineers,

Adtranz were the procurement suppliers and our firm provided bridge architecture and the groundscape landscape planning

work.

Guideway columns, hammer-head beams, long span girders, and rounding-shaping of engineering elements were our

architectural contributions. Our renderings and models were needed for approvals. Kwan Henmi provided station designs.

Reverse Engineering for the BART HQ

Office Building

Oakland Downtown, California

As a part of the system wide earthquake

safety program, this building was

evaluated by BART seismic engineers.

Whereas many of the older East Bay

stations and support structures were

deemed to be repairable and upgradable

– this headquarters facility required

prohibitive repair measures and also it

would be too small to house the

expanded modern administrative

functions of BART.

So it was decided that the forty year old,

steel moment frame, concrete precast

curtain wall, building should be removed.

But because the mid-rise structure

straddles a Key BART Station, it couldn’t

be demolished. It had to be dismantled;

slowly, gingerly & sensitively.

Because we have done similar sensitive

removals (for SFO, EBUMUD, SF

Redevelopment) our firm was selected.

Hazmat issues, safety protocol and

structural bracing were other key

considerations. Our team included PSI,

Degenkolb, Swinerton Mgmt. Safely

taking down this mid-rise was almost as

complex as putting it up.

Chinatown Station

Landscape Design

The Chinatown Station is located

on busy Stockton Street, in the

heart of Chinatown. Early

designs for this station had

traditional Chinese elements

incorporated in the design. The

final design is clean and

contemporary. Traditional

Chinese landscaping materials

were explored as well as street

trees with protective tree grates.

Ultimately, due to the intense

urban site and difficulty of

maintenance, a single tree is the

only landscaping proposed for

this station.

Design

Located on the corner of historic

Union Square, the new Central

sensitive site. While the

In the end the more subdued

design statement was approved.

BART Warm Springs Extension Landscape Design Warm Springs, California

Design Criteria

The goals of the landscape planting in

parking areas, station and other facility

sites, and trackway / trainway are:

Provide a pleasant visual experience

and reinforce the site organization.

Emphasize shade and relief from the

sun.

Allow good visibility along the ground

plane for security and

pedestrian/vehicular circulation.

Incorporate drought-resistant plants

and utilize efficient irrigation systems.

Be low maintenance – avoid borders of

ground cover and shrubs that require

continuous maintenance and lawns.

Fit into adjacent community visually

and functionally.

Provide BART patrons with a sense of

location or regional expression by

emphasizing outstanding views or

landmarks.

Provide BART patrons with visual

variety through planting and views.

Provide windbreaks where site

characteristics make this desirable.

Bay view Opera House Streetscape

San Francisco, California

The proposed urban spaces around the Bay view Opera House will consist of an attractive

streetscape / plaza environment for public events, transit, performance, recreation and art

exhibits. An urban design concept will provide an existing opportunity to create a series of

content-rich community spaces. This could serve as a relevant community learning, cultural and

engaging space that celebrates and reflects the diversity of the past, present and future. Transit

interface, outdoor opera house open space, an additional new events building, and SFUSD

buildings are the focus of this project.

With the seismic retrofitting of the BART Transbay Tube, came the possibility of

the need to relocate the existing Port of San Francisco ferry berthing

accommodations. The layout of this floating terminal was done by Moffatt and

Nichol by the request of the Port. As a part of the Parsons Brinkerhoff transbay

team, chosen by BART, Stevens & Associates provided 3-D architectural

visualizations of the impact regarding the massing of the proposed floating

terminal on the harbor environment. A bulkhead to match existing embarkation

portals, an accessible gangway, floating terminal arched roof element, and

glass walled waiting areas were illustrated for BART.

Ferry Terminals and Marinas

Hunters Point Shipyard Redevelopment

San Francisco, California

Near the existing submarine pens, on the north side of the

shipyard in deep draft waters, our planning team in June 1999,

conceptualized a commuter facility to serve the new shipyard.

Using a two to three float facility, it featured a new loading pier

with open waiting areas as well as covered walkways.

Located just off Fisher Street at Lockwood Landing, the

terminal could handle Marine and East Bay ferries of the

Mendocino class. An approximate passenger loading capacity

of 75 patrons was proposed.

Dry Dock Re-Use As Marina

Hunters Point Shipyard Redevelopment

San Francisco, California

This former United States Navy Base is being converted into

San Francisco’s newest neighborhood. The development

team, which includes Stevens & Associates, envision a wide

variety of new uses.

The first priority is housing. The second priority is to provide

a wide variety of commercial redevelopment options. These

will range from waterfront pier reuse as an African Market

Place to standard commercial and retail mixed uses.

Important project elements include a ferry terminal along the

north side of the shipyard (described above) and reusing old

dry dock # 3 as a new small boat marina. New berthing slips

were planned around the new central plaza. New ADA

gangways and service facilities were clustered around the

terminal and marina.

Fisherman’s Wharf Public Access Plan

Port of San Francisco: Hyde Street Pier, Fish Alley, Pier 45 a,

b, e, d, Pier 47, Pier 47a, Inner Lagoon

Historic Fisherman’s Wharf – San Francisco’s northern

waterfront between Hyde and Taylor Streets – is the home of

an active, colorful fleet of commercial fishing boats which work

the waters of San Francisco Bay and the northern California

coast.

The public access plan calls for maintaining the charm of the

Fisherman’s Wharf by retaining the existing berthing and the

familiar buildings and walkways. The berths in the “old” harbor

section will continue to be used by charter fishing boats and the

historical commercial fleet.

The public will be encouraged to visit the site and observe the

working wharfs. Public access will be provided along the entire

waterfront piers. Some pier faces are reserved for visiting

ceremonial ships, most of which invite the public aboard during

their stay, and for historic submarine displayed for public

visiting. The east apron of Pier 45 would lead to the Fisheries

Institute displays and possibly a public access plaza under

consideration for the end of the pier. Information displays are

planned to inform visitors about the fisheries resources of the

area, conservation measures, and related topics, and some of

the fish handling tenants at the Seafood Center will provide

windows and other viewing opportunities into their plants. A

retail fish market will be encouraged in the truck loading areas

on the weekends and at other times industry activity permits.

New benches, lighting, kiosks, curbs, signage, pavers, trash

containers, pavement painting, bollards, plazas and music

gathering areas are being designed to improve the public

access of the site.

Stevens & Associates was established in 1978 and offers specialized

services in the areas of architecture and landscape architecture. We are

a minority-owned firm whose main office is located in downtown San

Francisco. The projects of Stevens & Associates touch the lives of

thousands of people every day. We have completed more than 200

projects for over 100 clients. Those projects include airports, rapid

transit, high-rise buildings, recreation facilities, water and waste water

treatment plants, housing, landscaping and master planning ranging in

size from $100,000 to $1 Billion. Our clients, and the public we serve,

share in the belief that new futures can be shaped by applying

architectural design in the service of environmental quality and

community benefit.

Stevens & Associates’ client list includes numerous agencies of federal,

state, and local governments, private developers, institutions, engineers

and other architects. Whether prime or sub-consultant we strive for

excellence in the delivery of services to our clients.

Architecture – Landscape Architecture – Civil Engineering

The development of the design concept into the most logical solution

involves the integration of functional, aesthetic and human

considerations. We approach each project by assisting our clients to

clearly identify not just their problems, but also their goals. Then, with

the clients continuing input, we determine solutions and develop an

individualized project approach. The success and longevity of a project

is insured by the continual oversight of senior staff.

Stevens & Associates - Our Role

A successful project consists of several stages, which follow in a

necessary sequence. Our participation in each project phase is essential

and our continuous involvement throughout these phases enables us to

maintain project quality from beginning to end. With careful attention to

every detail, we guide the project from a series of conceptual sketches,

to technical drawings & specs to a completed building.

Planning + Programming

Facility programming identifies the needs and objectives of clients and

potential users for new or renovated facilities. Our calculations for the

building, operation, life-cycle cost, and return-on-investment analyses

provide a basis for evaluating the benefits of a project.
