“Come, let us kill him and acquire his inheritance." The tenants in
today's parable murdered because of their greed. They had no respect
for either the servants or the son of their landlord. Motivated only by
their desire to own the property they cultivated, they did whatever was
necessary to further their cause. But they were fools. They only thing
they inherited was a death sentence in return for their wickedness.
Greed can act like poison to an otherwise healthy mind. Instead of
allowing one to think clearly, an obsession with having "more" can
cloud a person's judgment. Certainly it won't always lead to murder,
but more often than not it leads to using people for our own ends or
dismissing those who cannot help us get what we want. Treating
others this way is never acceptable. It is an offense to human dignity
and to God who made us in his own image. Greed can also have a
blinding influence, preventing us from seeing the blessings that
surround us. When our focus is on what we want instead of what we
have, the tendency is to forget that we have anything at all. The only
thing we can see is that which we don't yet possess.
Ultimately, greed makes us miserable. It fosters discontent for our
life and disrespect for the lives of others. It is certainly not a fruit of
the kingdom of God. Belonging to this heavenly realm means living a
life of generosity instead of greediness. It means looking for ways to share what we have to improve the lives of others instead of hoarding
more to "improve" our own lives. Jesus tells us that his kingdom
belongs to those who produce its fruit. May we root out the weed of
greed and instead cultivate generosity in the vineyard of our hearts.
Brownbaggers Homeless Outreach
The Brownbaggers project serves the poor in the
NYC parks during the winter months. Since
2009 we have delivered thousands of lunches.
Meeting monthly in the Parish Hall at 12:30pm,
we assemble 100 brown bag lunches with food
and clothing items donated by our volunteers.
We then travel via subway to multiple
Manhattan parks to distribute our lunches to
those most in need, returning to Brooklyn by
3:30pm. John Olash is the current director of
our Brownbaggers Homeless Outreach program.

“ If your desires be endless, your cares and fears will be so, too.” - Thomas Fuller
Next weekend the Bishop has asked
that we have a special collection in response
to the devastation wrought by Hurricane
Maria upon Puerto Rico and beyond. The
funds collected will be distributed through
the Catholic Charites National Disaster
Relief, or sent directly to the affected
dioceses. Please be as generous as you can.
WE HOPE THE PARENTS OF OUR FAITH FORMATION PROGRAM ARE ENJOYING AND
SHARING WITH THEIR CHILDREN THE OCTOBER EDITION OF PARTNERS IN FAITH. OUR
EMPHASIS THIS YEAR CONTINUES TO BE ON HELPING FAMILIES TO PUT PRAYER,
SACRAMENTS, AND CATECHESIS AT THE CENTER OF FAMILY LIFE. PLEASE NOTE A FEW
HIGHLIGHTS:
• PRAYER IS THE FOUNDATION OF A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD AND THE
ROSARY CAN BE A STRONG PILLAR OF THAT FOUNDATION. OUR MAIN ARTICLE ON
PAGE 1 HELPS PARENTS PASS ON A LOVE OF THIS UNIQUELY CATHOLIC PRAYER TO
THEIR CHILDREN FOR LIFELONG PRACTICE.
• HALLOWEEN IS A FAVORITE FALL HOLIDAY AND HAS CHRISTIAN ROOTS. OUR MAIN
ARTICLE ON PAGE 2 GIVES FAMILIES IDEAS FOR INCORPORATING CATHOLIC
IDENTITY INTO THIS FUN FALL FESTIVAL.
• THE DESIRE FOR JUSTICE WHEN WRONGED IS DIFFERENT THAN THE DESIRE FOR
VENGEANCE. OUR PARENT TALK FEATURE DESCRIBES HOW ONE PARENT
STRUGGLED WITH A DAUGHTER WHO REJOICED OVER A BULLY’S PUNISHMENT
INSTEAD OF SEEKING JUSTICE FOR A WRONG.
WE WELCOME THE PARENTS OF OUR CHILDREN WHO ARE ASKING TO RECEIVE THE
SACRAMENTS OF PENANCE AND HOLY COMMUNION ON MONDAY OCTOBER 23, 2017 AT
7:00 PM IN THE CHURCH.
WE WELCOME THE PARENTS OF OUR CHILDREN WHO ARE ASKNG TO RECEIVE THE
SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION ON TUESDAY OCTOBER 24, 2017 AT 7:00 PM IN THE
CHURCH.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION AND COOPERATION!

Martha’s Ministry
Is a new initiative to invite more members of our
parish to take stewardship for the events and
activities that require some “helping hands”. It is
so deemed Martha’s Ministry in honor of Jesus’
dear friend who concerned herself with the
“details” of hospitality. It is our hope, that many
will come forward to participate in this wonderful
means of practicing stewardship and so help
maintain the vibrancy or our beloved parish.
Ministry is open to Teens, Young Adults, Married
Couples, Single Men & Women, Seniors… Young
and Old alike. Whatever talents you can offer as
our events come along during the year! Look for
upcoming meeting dates and events that we need
your help. Contact Geri Anne 718-965-9151 or
e-mail at [email protected], if you would like
