Stewart Brothers Nurseries Ltd
Remembering Bill StewartWilliam Whitworth (Bill) Stewart was a pioneer of the nurseryindustry in Western Canada. In 1940, Bill joined Stewart BrothersNurseries, founded in 1911 as a fruit tree nursery by his father anduncle. Early operations of Stewart Brothers Nurseries focused onsupplying fruit trees to the then fledgling Okanagan Valley andWashington state fruit industry. Under Bill's direction, the nurserywas expanded in 1953 to include a full line of shade trees andshrubs. Recognizing there was growing need for trees in the PrairieProvinces; Stewart Brothers Nurseries became the major supplier ofcity boulevard trees and the major wholesale supplier to a growingnumber of nurseries, garden centers, municipalities andlandscapers. In 1987, the business expanded again with additionallocations in Grand Forks and Midway, British Columbia.
As an employer, Bill will be remembered as a man quick to helpfamilies get their start in Canada. His employees came from as faraway as Hungary, Portugal, Italy, Germany and India. Bill'sgenerosity to his employees earned him tremendous respect andloyalty as evidenced by the many long-term employees at StewartBrothers Nurseries.
Bill was deeply rooted in the community. In addition to runningStewart Brothers Nurseries, Bill was also a director of the KelownaGrowers Cooperative Association, he served his community as aCouncilor for the municipality of Glenmore and he was also an activeMason.
Bill was also a loving and devoted family man. Along with his wifeJean, they raised six children. Bill set an example for his childrenwith the values and work ethic so evident in his life. Five of Bill's sixchildren still reside in the Kelowna area demonstrating how deeplyrooted they too have become in their community.
Bill was passionate about the nursery. He loved the earth, heloved the trees. He loved being at the nursery and spent most ofthe day there until he was well into his eighties. Bill's face wouldlight up when he spoke of the nursery - it was his passion and itremains his legacy.
