Careless or improper use of the machinemay cause serious injury. Have yourSTIHL Dealer show you how to operateyour blower. Observe all applicable local safety regulations, standards andordinances.

Minors should never be allowed to use ablower : Bystanders, especially children, and animals should not be allowed in thearea where a machine is in use.Never let the unit run unattended.Do not lend or rent your machine withoutthe owner‘s manual. Be sure that any-one using your unit understands the information contained in this manual. Most of these safety precautions andwarnings apply to the use of all STIHLblowers. Different models may have different parts and controls.

See the appropriate section of yourowner‘s manual for a description of thecontrols and function of the parts of yourmachine.

You must be in good physical conditionand mental health and not under the influence of any substance (drugs, alcohol, etc.) which might impair vision, dexterity or judgment. Do not operate ablower when you are fatigued .Be alert - if you get tired while operatingyour machine, take a break. Tirednessmay result in loss of control. Workingwith any blower can be strenuous. If youhave any condition that might be aggra-vated by strenuous work, check with yourdoctor before operating the machine.

Prolonged use of a blower, (or other machines) exposing the operator to vibrations may produce whitefinger disease (Raynaud‘s phenomenon)or carpal tunnel syndrome. These condi-tions reduce the hand‘s ability to feeland regulate temperature, producenumbness and burning sensations andmay cause nerve and circulation damage and tissue necrosis.

The STIHL blower is not equipped withan antivibration (AV) system. OtherSTIHL blower models are available withan AV system designed to reduce the transmission of engine vibrations to theoperator’s hands. An AV system is recommended for those operators whouse blowers on a regular or sustainedbasis.

Antivibration systems do not guaranteethat you will not sustain whitefinger disease or carpal tunnel syndrome. Therefore, continual and regular usersshould monitor closely the condition oftheir hands and fingers. If any of the above symptoms appear, seek medicaladvice immediately.

Use of gloves when working with the blower isrecommended.

Good footing is most important. Wear sturdyshoes with nonslip soles.

To reduce the risk of injury associatedwith the inhalation of dust, use a face filter mask when using your blower in dusty conditions.

Proper eye protection is a must. Eventhough the discharge is directed awayfrom the operator, ricochets and bouncebacks can occur during blower operations.

Never operate a blowerunless wearing gogglesor properly fitted safetyglasses with adequatetop and side protection

which comply with ANSI Z 87.1 (or yourapplicable national standard).

Blower noise may damage your hearing.Wear sound barriers (ear plugs or earmufflers) to protect your hearing. Conti-nual and regular users should have theirhearing checked regulary.

Always turn off the engine before puttingdown blower. When transporting yourunit in a vehicle, properly secure it to prevent turnover, fuel spillage and damage to the machine.

+This STIHL unit uses an oil-gasoline mixture for fuel (see the chapter on"Fuel" of your owner‘s manual).

Gasoline is an extremelyflammable fuel. If spilledor ignited by a spark or other ignition source, itcan cause fire and

serious burn injury or property damage.

Use extreme caution when handlinggasoline or fuel mix. Do not smoke or bring any fire or flamenear the fuel.

+

Fuel your machine in well-ventilated areas, outdoors only. Always shut off theengine and allow it to cool before refuel-ing. Relieve fuel tank pressure by loosen-ing fuel cap slowly. Never remove fuel filler cap while engine is running.

Select bare ground for fueling and moveat least 10 feet (3 m) from the fuelingspot before starting the engine.Wipe off any spilled fuel before startingyour blower and check for leakage.

Always tighten fuel filler cap securely after fueling.

Check for fuel leakage while refuelingand during operation. If fuel or oil leakage is found, do not start or run theengine until leak is fixed and spilled fuelhas been wiped away. Take care not toget fuel on your clothing. If this happens, change your clothing immediately.

Always store gasoline in approved container.

,

Page 7: STIHL BG 75 - STIHL – The Number One Selling Brand of Chain

Unit vibrations can cause an improperlytightened fuel cap to loosen or come offand spill quantities of fuel.

In order to reduce risk offuel spillage and fire, tighten fuel cap by handwith as much force aspossible.

You should always inspect your unit before starting it. Make sure the controlsand safety devices are working properly.

Your blower is a one-person machine. To reduce the risk of eye or other injuryfrom thrown objects, insure that by-standers are at least 50 feet (15m) away during use. Stop the engine immediately if you areapproached.

For specific starting instructions, see theappropriate section of your owner‘s manual. Place the machine on firm ground or other solid surface in an openarea. Maintain good balance and securefooting.

When you pull the starter grip, don‘twrap the starter rope around your hand.Do not allow the grip to snap back, butguide the starter rope slowly back to permit the rope to rewind properly.

Failure to follow this procedure may result in injury to hand or fingers andmay damage the starter mechanism.

- .

Never operate your machine if it is damaged, improperly adjusted or notcompletely and securely assembled.

Start and operate your unit outdoors in aventilated area.

Keep the space behind and beside theengine clear at all times to allow for theescape of hot and toxic exhaust fumes. When working with a handheld blower, always carry it with the muffler awayfrom you to reduce the risk of burns fromcontact with the hot muffler or hot exhaust fumes.

Operate your machine under good visibility and daylight conditions only.Work carefully.

-&

Operate the blower under good visibilityand daylight conditions only.

Your blower produces poisonous exhaust fumesas soon as the combus-tible engine is running. These gases (e.g. carbonmonoxide) may be color-

less and odorless.

To reduce the risk of serious or fatal injury from breathing toxic fumes, neverrun the blower indoors or in poorly ventilated locations. Ensure proper ventilation when working in trenches orother confined areas.

Use of this product can generate dust, mists, and fumes containing chemicalsknown to cause respiratory disease, cancer, birth defects, or other reproduc-tive harm. If you are unfamiliar with therisks associated with the particular dust, mists or fumes at issue, consult your employer, governmental agencies suchas OSHA and NIOSH and other sourceson hazardous materials. If the substancebeing blown or vacuumed is a commer-cial substance, review the material safety data sheet for that substance and/ or consult the material manufacturer /supplier. The state of California andsome other authorities, for instance,

/

Page 8: STIHL BG 75 - STIHL – The Number One Selling Brand of Chain

have published lists of substancesknown to cause cancer, reproductive toxicity, etc.

Control dust, mist and fumes at the source where possible. In this regarduse good work practices and follow therecommendations of OSHA / NIOSHand occupational and trade associa-tions. When the inhalation of toxic dust, mists and fumes cannot be eliminated, the operator and any bystanders shouldalways wear a respirator approved byNIOSH / MSHA for the substance at issue.

Dust with silica in its composition maycontain crystalline silica. Silica is a basiccomponent of sand, quartz, brick, clay, granite and numerous other mineralsand rocks, including masonry and con-crete products. Repeated and / or sub-stantial inhalation of airborne crystallinesilica can cause serious or fatal respira-tory disease, including silicosis. In addi-tion, the state of California and some other authorities have listed respirablecrystalline silica as a substance knownto cause cancer. When encounteringsuch materials, always follow the re-spiratory precautions mentioned above.

Breathing asbestos dust is dangerousand can cause severe or fatal injury, re-spiratory illness or cancer. The use anddisposal of asbestos containing productshave been strictly regulated by OSHAand the Environmental Protection Agency. Do not blow or disturb asbestosor asbestos containing products, suchas asbestos insulation. If you have anyreason to believe that you might be disturbing asbestos, immediately contactyour employer or a local OSHA representative.

When working with the blower, alwayswrap your fingers tightly around thehandle, keeping the control handle cradled between your thumb and forefinger. Keep your hand in this position to have your machine undercontrol at all times. Make sure your control handle (and grip for vacuum attachment) are in good condition andfree of moisture, pitch, oil or grease.

To reduce the risk of personal injury, donot direct air blast towards bystanders, since the high pressure of the air flowcould injure eyes and could blow smallobjects at great speed.

Always shut off the engine before cleaning or servicing the unit or replacing parts.

The blower fan between the air intakeand output openings rotates wheneverthe engine is running. In order to reducethe risk of injury from contact with thefan, never operate your unit without aproperly mounted intake screen and blower tube. Never insert any foreign object into the air intake or output openings of the machine.

Pay attention to the direction of the wind,i.e., do not work against the wind.

This engine is certified to operate onunleaded gasoline and with themix ratio 50:1.

Your two-stroke engine requires a mixture of brand-name gasoline and quality two-stroke engine oil with theclassification TC.

Use regular branded unleaded gasolinewith a minimum octane rating of 90 RON (U.S.A./Canada: pump octanemin. 89!). If the octane number of the regular grade gasoline in your area is lower use premium unleaded fuel. Fuel with a lower octane rating may result in preignition (causing "pinging")which is accompanied by an increase inengine temperature. This, in turn, increases the risk of the piston seizureand damage to the engine.

The chemical composition of the fuel isalso important. Some fuel additives notonly detrimentally affect elastomers (carburetor diaphragms, oil seals, fuel lines etc.), but magnesium castings aswell. This could cause running problemsor even damage the engine. For this reason it is essential that you use onlyname branded fuels!

Use only STIHL two-stroke engine oil orequivalent branded two-stroke air-cooled engine oils with the classificationTC for mixing.

We recommend STIHL 50:1 two-strokeengine oil since it is specially formulatedfor use in STIHL engines.

Do not use BIA or TCW (two-stroke water cooled) mix oils!

Take care when handling gasoline. Avoid direct contact with the skin andavoid inhaling fuel vapour.

The canister should be kept tightly closed in order to avoid any moisture getting into the mixture.

The fuel tank and the canister in whichfuel mix is stored should be cleanedfrom time to time.

&()

Only mix sufficient fuel for a few dayswork, not to exceed 3 months of storage.Store in approved safety fuel-canistersonly. When mixing, pour oil into the canister first, and then add gasoline.

Dispose empty mixing-oil canisters onlyat authorized disposal locations.

&

Before fueling, clean the filler capand the area around it to ensure that nodirt falls into the tank.

Always thoroughly shake the mixture inthe canister before fueling your machine.

*+In order to reduce the risk of burns or other personal injury from escaping gasvapor and fumes, remove the fuel fillercap carefully so as to allow any pressurebuild-up in the tank to release slowly.

*+After fueling, tighten fuel cap as securely as possible by hand.

Large leaves, cardboard or pieces ofbark can be taken up by the suction tube with its large diameter.

Never take up wet leaves as they mayclog the fan!

To minimize blowing time, use rakesand brooms to loosen debris before blowing.Recommended working techniques tominimize airborne debris and pollution:

• In dusty conditions, slightly dampensurfaces.

• Use the full blower nozzle extension so the air stream canwork close to the ground.

• Do not direct debris at subjectssuch as open windows or freshly-washed cars.

• After using blowers, clean up. Donot blow debris onto neighbouringproperties.

Recommended working techniques tominimize noise:

• Operate power equipment only atreasonable hours - not early in themorning, late at night or during thenoon-break when people might bedisturbed. Comply with times listedin local ordinances. Usual recom-mendations are 9:00 a.m. to 12:00a.m. and 03:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. onworkdays for professionals. Specialconsiderations should be given toneighbours on weekends.

• Fewer engines mean less noise;therefore use only one piece of

power equipment at a time, whenpossible.

• Operate power blowers at the lowest possible throttle speed to dothe job.

• Check your equipment before operation, especially the muffler, airintakes and air filters.

Conserve water by using power blowersinstead of hoses for those lawn and garden applications where a blower canbe properly used, such as cleaning patios or porches.

Wrong fuel mix (too much engine oil inthe gasoline), a dirty air filter andunfavorable running conditions (mostlyat part throttle etc.) affect the condition ofthe spark plug. These factors cause deposits to form on the insulator nosewhich may result in trouble in operation.

If engine is down on power, difficult tostart or runs poorly at idling speed, first check the spark plug.

• Remove spark plug -see chapter “Starting”:

• Clean dirty spark plug.• Check electrode gap -

it should be 0.5mm/0.02" # -readjust if necessary.

• Use only resistor type spark plugsof the approved range.

Rectify problems which have caused fouling of spark plug:Incorrect carburetor setting, too much oilin fuel mix, dirty air filter, unfavorable running conditions, e.g.operating at part load.

• Fit a new spark plug after approx. 100 operating hours -or earlier if the electrodes arebadly eroded.

*+To reduce the risk of fire and burn injury, use only spark plugs authorized bySTIHL (see “Specifications”). Alwayspress spark plug boot snugly ontospark plug terminal of the propersize. (Note: If terminal has detachableSAE adapter nut, it must be attached.) A loose connection between spark plugterminal and ignition wire connector inthe boot may create arcing that could ignite combustible fumes and cause afire.

A factory new machine should not berun at high revs (full throttle off load) forthe first three tank fillings. This avoids unnecessary high loads during the break-in period.

As all moving parts have to bed induring the break-in period, the frictional resistances in the engine are greater during this period. The engine develops its maximum power after about 5 to 15 tank fillings.

?

After a long period of full-throttle operation, allow engine to run for a whileat idle speed so that the heat in the engine can be dissipated by flow of cooling air. This protects engine-mounted components (ignition, carburetor) from thermal overload.

#4

Storing for a short period:Wait for engine to cool down. To avoidcondensation, fill the fuell tank and keep the unit in a dry place until youneed it again.

Storing for an long period:see chapter "Storing the Machine".
