As I sit here writing this letter to

you, it is pouring with rain outside.

The kind of rain that makes me want

to cuddle up on the couch with a cup

of tea and a good book while I wait

for the warmer days of spring. Even

though the weather outside is not

cooperating, spring has arrived, both

on the calendar, and the pages of this

magazine.

In each issue we share our newest

obsessions in gift ideas, home décor,

fashion, beauty and more. While

we’d like to take all the credit, the

fact is that our inspiration is found

while browsing the boutiques in our

neighbourhoods. Coming out of the

long, dark, wet days of winter, just

wandering through the shops is an

instant pick-me-up. Filled with the

brighter, lighter colours of the season,

I can feel my mood lifting and, dare I

say it, a bit of spring fever kicking in.

Along with my usual urge to do

some spring cleaning and purging,

I am inspired to change up the

accessories in my home (see “It’s

in the Details” on page 11). While

boots are my go-to choice of winter

footwear, my feet are itching to be

set free in a pair of peep-toe wedges

(like the pair shown in “Spring Mix” on

page 20). I am even going to do away

with the notion that a well laid out

platter of meats and cheeses paired

with red wine is a feast best-suited to

winter, and indulge in the charcuterie

platter featured on page 24.

So, while it may still feel like winter

outside, I invite you to take heart in

the pages of this edition while you

wait for the rays of spring sunshine to

arrive.

fter selling their executive home in 2010,

Rob and Katy Loewen and their two

children, spent a year without a place to call

their own. So when Katy’s father decided

to downsize, this busy couple jumped at the

chance to purchase his 2,500 square foot

house in Cloverdale, B.C. They quickly set

about putting their own mark on the

space, and after a four week renovation,

moved into their new abode.

As a sales executive, Katy spends a lot of time

travelling and wanted to create a space where

she could recharge. “Our home is my sanctuary,

my safe place,” says Katy. “I want to feel good

when I’m in it.” And feel good it does. Flooded

with natural light, Katy built on that by selecting

a neutral palette as the foundation of her design.

“I chose furnishings in an off-white colour so that

your eye isn’t distracted by the bigger pieces in the

room,” she says. “For me, it’s all about the details. I

am inspired by the places we have visited and the

things we’ve experienced. Natural elements really

speak to me.”

The story of the Loewen’s life is evident throughout

their home. From hurricane vases that house the

collection of shells Katy has gathered from all over

the world, to the stack of books on the coffee

table. “Growing up I was enthralled with the book,

Visions of a Nomad, written by Wilfred Thesiger.

When I had the opportunity to travel to Africa at

the age of 18, I literally tracked down Mr. Thesiger

and met him in his hut in the village where he was

living.” This is only one such story that can be told

from the pieces throughout the space. “My son

made the driftwood ball in the corner by collecting

pieces on our local beach,” smiled Katy.

To keep the space feeling fresh, Katy regularly

switches up her accessories: pillows, throws,

and even artwork are rotated throughout the

home and changed seasonally. Lighting is also a

very important component to creating the right

ambience. “Every light in my home is on a dimmer,”

states Katy.

While the space has a very expensive feel, Katy

takes an economical approach to her decorating.

Lighting is often from Home Depot and some

accessories from HomeSense. “I also hunt down

things on Craigslist and haunt second hand shops,”

she says. “One of my best finds is the acrylic coffee

table. Typically this would sell for over $1,000, and

I picked it up for $150.” It is that kind of thrifty

thinking that allows her to spend a little extra

where it counts, like on the tile surrounding the

fireplace. The stunning hues of blue add a special

touch to the space without detracting from the

overall feel. Another splurge? Sid Dickens tiles; a

collection that now numbers over 100.

Like all creative people, this couple is constantly

planning their next adventure, but one thing is

certain; upon their return they’ll be welcomed into

a space that reflects who they are and how they’ve

chosen to live life. That’s something that even the

dog, Pandy, takes pleasure in.

profile Forever Yours Lingerie has been a beacon of undergarment

salvation for the modern woman for over 18 years. Located in the heart of the downtown Langley shopping district, this family owned business is anything but small. It is their focus on the customer’s experience, coupled with their staff’s bra fitting knowledge, that has catapulted this boutique into the lower mainland’s largest independent lingerie store. Once serving only the plus size woman, the shop now carries a huge selection of styles for women of all sizes. “We realized that women of all shapes and sizes needed professional bra fitting services,” says owner, Sonya Perkins. “With our move to a larger location five years ago, we were able to expand our offerings and serve all women.”

The moment you step through the doors of the recently renovated 6,000 square foot boutique you will feel as though you are inside a sexy boudoir. Plush pink accents pop beautifully against the black and white interior, enveloping you in comfortable luxury. With 10 fitting rooms that feature shimmering wallpaper, mini-chandeliers, and back lit mirrors, you’ll look forward to trying on that swimsuit. “We wanted to create an atmosphere that is sophisticated and relaxing,” says Sonya. “Many women find lingerie shopping stressful and having a beautiful place to try things on is an automatic boost in confidence.”

Carrying a wide variety of brands, including many from Europe, there is a price point and style to suit every need. Whether you’re looking for the perfect everyday t-shirt bra, or something a little spicier for that special occasion, you’ll find it here. For those that

prefer shopping from the comfort of their own home, you can now order the same great products from their online store.

Forever Yours Lingerie recently captured international media attention with their sports bra campaign featuring Elly Mayday, an up- and-coming plus size model who is currently battling cancer. “Our focus has always been on helping women embrace their bodies and feel confident in their skin,” says Sonya. “We have stayed true to that mandate from the beginning.

Indeed, their commitment to celebrating a real woman’s body is evident in everything they do. From the mannequins in various shapes and sizes, to photographing truly curvy models, Forever Yours Lingerie has transformed the way women shop for bras and lingerie.

Charcuterie 101 More than just meat and cheese!

Follow this easy guide and put together your own delicious charcuterie.

Photo & text by Linda Horn

Whether sharing an evening with your best girlfriends, or entertaining family, a charcuterie plate is an elegant way to present a delicious variety of nibbles. Charcuterie, by definition, is all about the preserved meats. This girl cannot live by meat alone — I also need bread, cheese, and other yummies. And don’t forget the wine! We have some wine pairing suggestions to enhance your taste adventure.

To put together your own charcuterie, make sure you include some of the following:

Something SaltySalty, preserved meats fill this requirement quickly and easily. On my plate, I have used pepper-crusted sausage, salty prosciutto and rich mortadella.

Something SweetI chose local Langley preservatory Vista D’Oro (vistadoro.com) for their heavenly Fig & Walnut Wine artisanal preserve. Red or green grapes pair excellently with rich cheeses.

Something Spicy, Something crunchyI whipped up some sweet ‘n’ spicy nuts (see recipe on the next page). The fragrant spices and crunch of the nuts pairs with everything you see here. Watch out, they are addictive!

the vehiclePile your choices on baguette slices; you could also include crackers.

Something creamyOne of my favourite local farmgate shops, Milner Valley Cheese in Langley, (milnervalleycheese.com) provided two of my cheeses; creamy fresh chèvre, and a beautiful aged Gouda. My blue cheese is Roquefort imported from France.

taste

To continue our Langley-inspired charcuterie adventure, we visited local Langley winery, Backyard Vineyards (backyardvineyards.ca), to choose some liquid libations to accompany our meats and cheese.

caBernet Sauvignon You need a bold, red wine to stand up to the strength of the blue cheese. It also pairs beautifully with meat.

Syrah This well-balanced red goes well with the spicy meat and nuts, as well as the goat cheese.

rieSling A crisp and refreshing white. The acid pairs wonderfully with creamy cheeses such as brie, and strong cheese like the aged goat cheese on our platter.

You can use whatever nuts you like; I used almonds and pecans.

Which Wine?

Go NutsingreDientS1 egg white1/8 tsp cinnamon1/8 tsp nutmegPinch of ground gloves1 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper1/2 tsp chili powder1/2 tsp ground cumin1 tsp sea salt1/4 cup sugar2 1/2 cups of assorted nuts

Bake for about 15 minutes, then stir nuts and return to oven.

Reduce oven temperature to 250°F, and continue baking for another 10 minutes, or until medium brown. Cool completely on pan, then break nuts apart. Store in a sealed jar.

west coast wanderings

Weekend EscapesFor most of Canada this winter has been cold, dark, and long. We on the west coast saw hints of spring as early as February as bulbs were looking to show — until being covered with snow. Itching for a little west coast adventure we asked you, our readers, what your favourite place is to head to for a quick weekend pick-me-up. Here are your faves:

la conner. If you have 24-48 hours to sneak away, La Conner, Washington, a picturesque town with a population of just 891, is just over an hour’s drive for your weekend getaway. Beautiful and quaint are some of the words that spring to mind, along with tulips. During April, La Conner hosts the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. A great getaway if relaxing means tiptoeing through the tulips. If you’ve got a boat, take your own accommodation as the local marina provides guest moorage.
