Components inside the casing

FilterSupply and extract airfilters made of glassfibre. Filter class F7(EU7).An easy-to-operateclamping device isused to press the filteragainst sealing strips inside thecasing. The complete filter wall can be pulledout to ease cleaning and changing of the filters.STING Top has so called extensible ultra compact filter.

Rotary heat exchangerThe rotary heat exchanger is used for recycling and transferring of heat (at summertime sometimes chilled air) and eventual moist out of exhaust air into the input air. The rota-ry heat exchanger is deliv-ered as an non-hygroscopic (only heat transferring)and as hygroscopic ( heat and moisture transferring). It is made out of aluminium, equipped with a purging sector, electronic speed control and Rotation monitor. Defrosting is not necessary with normal comfort ventilation. If the relative humidity of the exhaustair is higher than 30% and the outside temperature is less than -15 celsius there might be a risk of FREEZE UP. Check with Fläkt Woods if there is a need for defrosting.

Adjustment panelsFlow adjustment panels are supplied with the unit size 10-50 to create the correct pressure balance across the rotor so that purging air flow will pass in the right direc-tion. The panels should be placed upstream of the extract air filter, if their use is nec-essary.(Not STING Top).

Unit casingThe unit casing is made of double-skin galvanizedsheet steel with an intervening layer of insulationconsisting of 50 mm thick mineral wool; sturdy longi-tudinal edge sections.Service doors with adjustable hinges, handle andlock for access to fans and filters.Unit size 10-20 is supplied with stable base feet.Unit sizes 30-85 are supplied with base frame.

FanThe STING fans have been selected with focus on their best all-round economy. The size 10 units have double-inlet centrifugal fans with forward-curved blades. This allows for a very short unit; and this is advantageous where space for installation is limited. The size 20-85 units have newly developed efficient Centriflow Plus plug fans that offer up to 77% efficien-cy. The fans are driven by efficient motors that make the air handling units extremely energy-saving.The speed of the fans is variably controlled by means of integral or EC-motors. Connections

The duct mountings fitted on the circular with a rub-ber ring and the rectangular with PG joint. The size 20-85 units can be ordered with fan and/or filter inlet for upward discharge/suction, respectively. To be specified when ordering. For the size 20-85 units, it is possible to connect exter-nal functional sections such as an air heater or cooler, silencers, etc., directly to the air handling unit.

STING CATALOGUE

DescriptionThe ETKC cooling unit is a complete unit section, which is fully installed in the EC air handling unit. The cooling unit is available in seven sizes for air flowsranging from 0.6 to 8.0 m3/s. The cooling unit is cost effective, environment friendly and easy to use. The cooling unit is a reliable, high quality product which is simple to engineer and install, and requires a mod-est amount of service. The cooling unit has the same casing and frame as other unit sections, and has an evaporator and con-denser with copper tubing and aluminium fins. The cooling unit cools the supply air by means of type R407C refrigerant. The supply air is cooled by an air cooler (evaporator) in which the heat is absorbed by the refrigerant which then transfers the heat to the condenser. The condenser is located in the exhaust air flow path. The heat from the supply air is thus transferred to the exhaust air. The cooling unit can be equipped with a water-cooled condenser connected upstream of the ordinary air-cooled condenser and in series with it. The water-cooled condenser is cooled by means of mains water.

Thefunctionofthewater-cooledcondenseris:– to allow for heat recovery for heating the domestic

hot water, for instance– to allow for operation with an exhaust air flow

which is lower than the supply air flow– to safeguard the performance of the cooling unit

even at extremely high outdoor temperatures.

The water-cooled condenser is an option which is integrated into the unit at the factory. It is equipped with a water connection and water-saving valve. The water cooled condenser has sufficient capacity

to handle about 50% of the total condenser rating of the corresponding output variant. The water-cooled condenser must be connected to the mains water supply (cold water) and drain. The condenser is self-regulating and provides cooling when the condensa-tion temperature is higher than the preset set point. No adjustments need be made.

LocationThe cooling unit should be located so that the con-denser is always nearest to and upstream of the ex-haust air fan. See Figure.

Technical dataThe cooling unit is controlled by an external 0–10 V control signal. The cooling unit contains 2 or 3 com-pressors, depending on the unit size, and these are switched in three output stages. Detailed particulars are given under each size.If the cooling unit is equipped with a water-cooled condenser, this is switched in as necessary. A me-chanical pressure-controlled water-saving valve, which senses the condensation pressure, opens to ad-mit cooling water to the water-cooled condenser

Project designIn the project design work, it is normally assumed that the exhaust air flow is higher than or equal to the supply air flow, in order to guarantee satisfac-tory cooling of the condenser. The product selection computer program is used for more accurate project design work. The cooling unit is designed for outdoor air tempera-tures between +20 °C – +32 °C and a min. supply air temperature of +12 °C. The lowest permissible air flow is specified below each unit size. The cooling unit is not suitable for use in conjunction with supply air temperature control.

The alarm circuit of the unit provides a group alarm signal, which can be connected to an external control-ler. This group alarm can be obtained as potential-free contacts at pins 57, 58 at the terminal board. To pre-vent unnecessary stops and alarms from the cooling unit, it should be interlocked from the extract air fan FF. Connect the unit as shown in the diagram below.

ControlThe external control signal should be adapted to suit a minimum temperature sensor (minimum temperature limiter) located in the supply air duct, as far as pos-sible from the unit, but upstream of the first supply air device, and a temperature sensor located in the premises or in the exhaust air stream. The cooling unit controller includes an input for controlling with the exhaust air fan and outdoor sensor as interlocks.

Overheating of the condenser (KD)If the condenser heat cannot be absorbed by the ex-haust air and the condensation temperature rises to approx. 57 °C (corresponds to an exhaust air tem-peratureofapprox.53-55°CdownstreamofKD:x),GP1a:1(highpressurein-servicepressureswitch)willstopcompressorKK:1inordertoreducetheload.Ifthe condensation temperature should increase to the maximumpermissible(+65°C),GP1:xwillstopthecorresponding compressor and an alarm will be initi-ated.GP1:xhasmanualreset.

AlarmThe cooling unit has a group alarm for motor protec-tion, phase sequence, 3-phase indicator, high and low pressure alarms. The high pressure switch is reset by pressing the ”button” on the appropriate pressure switchGP1:x.afterappropriatecorrectiveaction.If necessary, reset the motor protection breakers. Trip the power supply and then switch it back on again at the main circuit breaker in order to reset the control-ler. The group alarm can be connected to an external controllerorBMS

Water-cooled condenser (KD-W)The water-cooled condenser is used for heat recovery or when the exhaust air flow rate is too low for cool-ing the refrigerant upstream of the air-cooled con-denser (it should therefore be located upstream of the ordinary air-cooled condenser in refrigerant circuit 2 if the system has 2 circuits or in refrigerant circuit 3 if the system has 3 circuits). The water-cooled condenser KD-W is equipped with a pressure-controlled water-saving valve VW, which enables the condenser to come into service automatically to cool whenever the need arises.SizingThe project design work on the cooling unit is basical-ly the same as that for other unit sections. The cooling unit is fully integrated into the Sting and is equipped with complete control equipment. The following information is necessary for selecting theappropriateoutputvariantofthecoolingunit:Manual sizing presupposes knowledge on how a

Mollier Chart is used. For simple and quick sizing usetheStingCOOLERproductselectionprogram. For optimum performance of the cooling unit, the exhaust flow rate should be the same or higher than the supply air flow rate. If they are not, check that the condensation temperature t1 is <57 °C when the unit is operating at maximum capacity

Flow compensation

Conventional sequential control

The heat exchanger will start if heat is necessary, theheater starts when full heat recovery is given and heatis required. When both the heat exchanger and theheater are at maximum effect and there is a need forextra heat the supply air temperature will drop. Thiscan be prevented with comfort control. Summer / winter compensated flow /pressure (STYZ-01, h=2)One way to prevent a temperature drop in a room isto reduce the flow / pressure when the outdoortemperature drops. To prevent a temperature increase in a room the flow/ pressure is increased when the outdoor temperatureincreases. The preset values for flow / pressureare adjusted independently with the help of a fourpoint graph coupled to the outdoor temperature ifthe heat exchanger and heater gives full effect.Regulating fan speed on both fans is done to preventnegative pressure in the building.Setting:Adjustthefourpointbreakpointsalsothemax and min flow / pressure using the control unit.

Outdoor temperature controlled fan speed(STYZ-01, h=1)Asimple way of preventing temperature drop in aroom is to prevent forced fan operation when theoutdoor temperature drops below the preset value.Setting:Adjustthebreakpointforoutdoortempera-tures using the control unit.

Comfort control (Heat exchanger- heatflow reduction)(STYZ-01, h=5)It is advantageous to utilize this function in places withextremely low outdoor temperatures. When theoutdoor temperature is so low that even with full heatrecovery and full effect on heating, more heat isrequired, the fan speed is decreased so that the desiredsupply air temperature is obtained.Adjusting fan speed on both fans is done to preventnegative pressure in the building.Setting:Adjustthemaximumflow/pressurelimitusing the control unit.

Web CommunicationA web application that offers you the same functionality as a conventional supervisory system although at consider-ably lower cost is available as an optional extra for STING units. Since the web server is integrated into the unit, there are no extra hidden costs or subscription fees.

HINT!BecauseaGSMmoduleisused, itisadvantageoustoutilise a so-called refill card which spares you from having to pay subscription fees. At present, cell phone users have to refill their accounts once every year in Sweden to avoid blockage. This can be done when changing the air filters, for example.

The web application is completely independent of opera-tive systems in PCs, i.e. no special software is necessary - only a web browser and an ordinary computer. The web server can be connected to a common local TCP/IP network. In this way you can communicate with the air handling unit from an optional computer in its local network. If no network is available, then it is possible to either connect a cable between the unit and the computer, or utilise a modem.

Duct connections are designed for PG jointing to ducting. For the STING 65 – 85, the coil is built into the air handling unit casing and is mounted together with the possible cooling coil inside

the same casing. Can be connected directly to the unit or out in the duct system. Specify this when ordering because the end connections in the heater casing vary depending on how it is connected. On the size 20 – 50 STING units, the air heater can be mounted directly to the air discharge connection of the unit. The distance from the bend to the air heater should be at least a distance equal to the diagonal distance across the duct. The air heater can be installed either horizontally or vertically. If installed horizontally the terminal box must only be on the side, not on the top or the underside. The air heater is equipped with 2 overheating circuit breakers, one that resets automatically and one that has to be reset manually which is done via the cover on the heater. The air heater is controlled from the unit’s elec-trical equipment cubicle by means of a 0–10 V signal. The air heater bears the CE label. Min permissible air velocity:1.5m/s.Maxpermissibleoperatingtempera-ture:40°C.Theairheaterisinterlockedviaterminalblock inside unit’s electrical equipment cubicle. Power must be supplied separately; the power supply cable is not included in the delivery. Signal cable for alarms, and operating the air heater has a quick connector for connection to the appropriate socket inside the electrical equipment cubicle in the STING.
