Day 1 – 28th August 2019: Leave St. Louis for overnight flight to Edinburgh

Day 2 – 29th August 2019: Arrive Edinburgh 7:45 AM Welcome to Scotland! Upon our arrival, we will collect our luggage and meet with our guide and driver. We will be escorted to Stirling Castle , one of Scotland's most historically important sites and was once a favoured residence of the Stewart kings and queens who held grand celebrations at the castle. Knights, nobles and foreign ambassadors once flocked to Stirling Castle to revel in its grandeur with its superb sculptures and beautiful gardens. It was a favoured residence of the Stewart kings and queens who held grand celebrations from christenings to coronations. After touring the castle we can have snack lunch at the on site restaurant before departing on coach at noon. Visit the Carfin Grotto at Parish of St Francis Xavier and the National Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes. For more than ninety years the Grotto at Carfin has been a special place of pilgrimage, prayer and grace for those who visit it. Since its inception many thousands of people, through their prayers, sacrifices, practical help and financial generosity have helped to sustain and expand the Grotto. The Grotto was visited by Pope Benedict when he visited Scotland in 2010. Mass is at 1:00 pm in St Francis Xavier's Church. Go to Apex City of Edinburgh Hotel for check in for 3 nights.

Day 3 30th August 2019: Following a full breakfast at the hotel, we will be escorted to Mass at the Metropolitan Cathedral of St Mary's, of the Archdiocese of St. Andrew's and Edinburgh. The site of this holy Church was chosen by Bishop Hay, Vicar Apostolic for the Lowland District. After seeing his previous Chapel in Blackfriars Wynd burned by a mob, he hoped that this new site would provide safety for the Church due to the surrounding buildings. The Church was further embellished and became the pro-cathedral of the Archdiocese in 1878, during the restoration of the Scottish hierarchy, and Roman Catholicism in Scotland. After Mass, we will proceed to lunch on our own, followed by a city tour. We will begin with a visit to Edinburgh Castle. This castle holds much historical significance as its purpose has transformed from a battle ground, to a home, to an army headquarters, and finally a tourist attraction. We will see the numerous, fascinating sites of the castle such as, the Great Hall, David's Tower, the Scottish National War Museum, the Queen Anne Building, and many more. You will be able to witness the oldest standing building in Edinburgh, St. Margaret's Chapel, which withstood numerous destruction attempts. This structure dates back to the 12th century during the reign of King David I, who dedicated this Chapel to his mother, Saint Margaret of Scotland also known as, Queen Margaret. The tour will continue to the UNESCO Palace of Holyrood House at the end of the Royal Mile. The Palace of Holyrood House is the Queens official residence in Scotland, as well as many other successive kings and queens of the monarchy of Scotland. After the fun-filled, busy day we will head back to our hotel for dinner & overnight.

Day 4 – 31st August: Edinburgh - St. Andrews - Perth

After breakfast, we will continue to explore the countryside on the way to the town of St. Andrews in Fife, named after the apostle Andrew; patron Saint of Scotland. As the remains of St Andrew were commonly believed to be buried here, the site became a major Shrine for Christians up until the Norman Cathedral. This Cathedral is the largest in all of Scotland, and was cleansed by Calvinist zealots during the Scottish Reformation and the ruins still remain. The shape, in which St. Andrew was crucified, is a symbol present on the Scottish national flag to remind the country of his martyrdom. St Andrews is also known worldwide as the home of golf, as the modern sport is believed to have been invented here in the 15th Century. The Old Course, devised in 1754, is still in operation. We will celebrate Mass at the church of St. James, a small Roman Catholic parish situated on a clifftop which overlooks the North Sea.

Page 3: Stirling Castle Carfin Groto Metropolitan Cathedral of St ......escorted to Stirling Castle , one of Scotland's most historically important sites and was once a favoured residence

Following, we will continue our Journey with a visit to the town of Perth , including Scone Palace, one of the finest examples of Georgian Gothic architecture in the UK. We will go back to our hotel in Edinburgh for dinner & overnight.

Day 5 – Sunday 1st September 2019 – Shannon – Cliffs of Moher – Galway. Depart hotel at 6:15 AM to go to Edinburgh Airport for 8:50 AM flight to Ireland. Arrive into Shannon Airport where you will be met by your driver in the arrivals hall and escorted to your awaiting motorcoach. Stop for Tea/coffee and homemade scones at a local hotel before visiting the Cliffs of Moher - Ireland’s most visited natural attraction with a magical vista that captures the hearts of up to 1 million visitors each year. The Cliffs rise up to 214 (700 feet) at the highest point and range for 8 km over the Atlantic Ocean on the Western seaboard of Co. Clare. Visit the eco-friendly visitor centre which operates using environmental best practices & features a state of the art Cliff’s exhibition. Continue northwards through County Clare and the area known as the Burren - The Burren takes its name from the Irish word 'bhoireann' meaning, 'a stony place' or 'a rocky place', which is a good description for this 350 sq kilometres limestone plateau in North Clare. The rough, intriguing and attractive landscape was formed 320 million years ago under a tropical sea. Later it was shaped by ice, hard weather and, of course, man and his beasts. The many wedge tombs and megalithic tombs prove that people have been living in the Burren for more than 5000 years. See the Poulnabrone Dolman - One of the more famous megalithic tombs is the portal dolmen - Poulnabrone Dolmen - The name Poulnabrone literally means 'the hole of the sorrows' and it is one of the most famous Irish dolmens. The thin capstone sits on two high portal stones to create a chamber and a low cairn. This site dates back to about 2,500 BC. Mass details to be confirmed.

Arrive into Galway City for a brief panoramic tour of the main highlights - Galway nestles at the neck of Galway Bay and is reputed to have been Columbus’ final point of departure on his epoch-making voyage of discovery. The city was founded on the east bank of the river late in the 12th century by the Anglo-Norman family de Burgo. It attracted many Welsh and Norman merchants who enclosed the city within a defensive wall. Under the control of the fourteen leading families, known as the ‘tribes’ an extensive trade developed, not only with the continent, importing French and Spanish wine, but also with the West Indies. See the famous Spanish Arch, located on the left bank of the Corrib, where Galway's river meets the sea. The Spanish Arch was originally a 16th century bastion, which was added to Galway's town walls to protect merchant ships from looting. Its current name "Spanish Arch" refers to former merchant trade with Spain, whose galleons often docked here. Dinner & overnight at the Galway Bay Hotel.

Day 6 – Monday 2nd September 2019 – Knock & Ballintubber Enjoy a full Irish Breakfast at the hotel. Mass details to be confirmed. Travel to Knock Shrine in Knock, County Mayo, an international place of prayer and pilgrimage where over one and a half million people make their way every year. The story of Knock dates back to the 21st of August 1879 when fifteen people from the village witnessed an apparition of Our Lady, St Joseph, St John the Evangelist, an altar, cross and lamb. Following this miraculous event, numerous cures were reported, the first being that of Delia Gordon, a young girl from the neighbouring town of Claremorris who was cured of deafness. Since then pilgrims have come to Knock in search of healing, reconciliation and peace. The personal pilgrimage of Pope John Paul 11 in 1979 to commemorate the centenary of the apparition and the visit of Mother Teresa of Calcutta in 1993 inspired an even greater devotion to the shrine.

Page 4: Stirling Castle Carfin Groto Metropolitan Cathedral of St ......escorted to Stirling Castle , one of Scotland's most historically important sites and was once a favoured residence

Today Knock Shrine is set in one hundred acres of beautiful landscaped gardens with meandering pathways and a diverse range of flowers, shrubs and trees. The complex incorporates five churches including the apparition chapel, parish church and basilica, a religious books centre, caravan and camping park, Knock Museum, Café le Chéile and Knock House Hotel. In the afternoon travel to Ballintubber Abbey - The story of Ballintubber Abbey began when, in 441, St Patrick baptised the people at the Druidic Well and established a church here. There are still remains of that early church in the graveyard and the Irish name, Baile Tobair Phádraig, means the townland of St Patrick’s Well. The Well is still flowing. Situated less than a mile east of the main Galway-Castlebar Road (N84), north of Ballinrobe, the Abbey which celebrates its Octo-Centenary year, still in daily use, unfolds a story of endeavour, architectural excellence, perseverance against odds and worship. Now tastefully restored, it has a dual role as a national monument and a rural parish church which has become again a Christian centre for prayer and retreats. Partially burned in 1265 and rebuilt in 1270, the Abbey flourished and became rich and powerful, accumulating a lot of land locally. It was connected with local kings and chieftains. Peace reigned for three hundred years. In 1603 their lands were confiscated and in 1635 the Augustinian Friars took over the Abbey. In 1653 Cromwellian soldiers attacked the Abbey and burned it. The Abbey became associated with an influential Norman family, the de Burgos of Mayo, and several members were interred in the Abbey including the elaborately carved tomb of Sir Theobald de Burgo (Tiobóid na Long) who was murdered nearby.Return for dinner & overnight at the Galway Bay Hotel or similar

Day 7 – Tuesday 3rd September 2019 – Connemara. After breakfast today the group will explore some of the beautiful countryside of Connemara, with its rolling hills, flowing rivers and coastal landscapes. Connemara is a wild and beautiful region of mountains, lakes, tumbling streams undulating bog, unspoiled beaches and panoramic views. It is a Gaelic- speaking region and has attracted many artisans, who can be visited at work in their studios. The centre of Connemara is composed of mountain peaks, the Twelve Bens or Pins which culminate in Benbaun. The sharp grey peaks of quartzite rock which is resistant to weathering are too steep and hard to be clothed in blanket bog. The region is now largely uninhabited, although in the past the more fertile lowlands were cultivated and the uplands were used as pasture for cattle and sheep.

Experience the beauty and tranquility of the 1000 acre estate of Kylemore Abbey & Gardens, home to Ireland's only Benedictine community of nuns since 1920- Set in a dramatic landscape, and originally built as a castle in 1867 as a romantic gift, Kylemore is steeped in history and tales of tragedy and romance, engineering initiatives, model farms, royal visits, spirituality and education. Experience the Victorian atmosphere of the restored rooms of the Abbey and miniature Gothic Church Explore the magical 6 acre Victorian walled garden where only Victorian varieties of flowers and vegetables are grown and visit the Head Gardener’s House. Vegetables and herbs from the garden are used in the café where they offer traditional home cooked food made to the recipes of the Benedictine nuns. Mass details to be confirmed Return for dinner & overnight at the Galway Bay Hotel or similar

Day 8 – Wednesday 4th September 2019 – Bunratty – Blarney – Cork. After breakfast travel southwards to Bunratty village to visit Bunratty Castle & Folk Park. The folk park set on 26 acres, is a stunning recreation of 19th Century Ireland and features various types of farmhouses, a church, a magical walled garden and village street complete with pub, post office and various shops. Bunratty Castle, built in 1425, is the most complete and authentic medieval fortress in Ireland and contains furnishings, tapestries, and works of art from the period.

Page 5: Stirling Castle Carfin Groto Metropolitan Cathedral of St ......escorted to Stirling Castle , one of Scotland's most historically important sites and was once a favoured residence

Continue further southwards to Blarney village. Visit Blarney Castle - Situated 8km from Cork City, this historic castle is most famous for its stone, which has the traditional power of conferring eloquence on all who kiss it. The word “Blarney” was introduced into the English language by Queen Elizabeth I and is described as pleasant talk, intended to deceive without offending. The stone is set in the wall below the battlements, and to kiss it, one has to lean backwards (grasping an iron railing) from the parapet walk. In the grounds of the castle the Rock Close, and its surroundings, is a curious place of ancient trees and far more ancient stones, by legend a garden of druidic origin and a centre of worship in pre-Christian days. The place has an aura of magic and mystique with Wishing Steps, Witch's Kitchen, Druid's Cave and many other delights telling a story of centuries past. Blarney Castle Estate offers visitors the chance to stroll in one of the country's most spectacular gardens. Blarney Castle & House are set in acres of parkland filled with rare and unusual trees and plants. Group will have some free time for shopping at the Blarney Woolen Mills Store in Blarney Village.

We will have a short panoramic tour of Cork City, Ireland’s second largest city. Built on a marsh, the city proper is interlaced with winding canal and the river, which gives it a distinctly European air. The River Lee divides the city in two and is perhaps best reflected in the well-patterned architectural development incorporating the best of old and new. Cork is the home of Murphy’s stout and also to the world famous Jazz Festival. Your panoramic tour of the city includes the City Hall, St Finbarr’s Cathedral, The Grand Parade and St. Patrick’s Street with Shandon Steeple overlooking the city to the North. The principal streets are lined with fashion houses and department stores stocking quality Irish goods. Pass by the English Market. The Market has entrances on Princes Street, Patrick Street and the Grand Parade. It is a covered market for fish, fruit, meat and vegetable. The origins of the market can be traced back to James 1st in 1610, but the present building dates from 1786 Continue to check in for dinner & overnight at the Rochestown Park Hotel, Cork or similar.

Day 9 – Thursday 5th September 2019 – Cashel & Dublin. Depart Cork after breakfast and travel to County Tipperary to visit the Rock of Cashel, one of Ireland’s spectacular and archaeological sites. The Rock of Cashel is a collection of medieval ecclesiastical buildings set on an outcrop of limestone in the Golden Vale.

The 12th-century round tower is of the oldest surviving building on the Rock, also include a high cross, and the ruins Romanesque chapel - Cormac's Chapel is one of the earliest, and finest churches built in the Romanesque style. The 13th century Gothic cathedral is a large cruciform Gothic church without aisles built between 1230 and 1270.Also a 15th century castle and the Hall of the Vicars is the entry point to the ecclesiastical enclosure. The Hall houses the museum where the original Cross of St. Patrick can be found. The site includes an audio-visual show and exhibitions.

Mass details to be confirmed. Continue into Dublin City for a short drive around the main city highlights. The capital of the Republic of Ireland sits on a splendid bay at the mouth of the River Liffey with the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains rising from its southern suburbs. It is internationally noted for its writers, Georgian architecture, witty natives and the production of Guinness! See sights such as the Guinness Brewery, St Patrick’s Cathedral, the Four Courts, Christchurch Cathedral, the Ha’penny bridge; O’Connell Street, the GPO & the Spire; Trinity College, Government Buildings, St Stephens Green and Georgian Dublin.

See Merrion Square, the heart of Georgian Dublin - Mapped out 250 years ago in 1762, it has fine Georgian Houses on three sides and the garden of Leinster House and the National Gallery and Natural History Museum on the 4th. Today many of the houses are predominantly used as office space but there is a wealth of history attached. Oscar Wilde lived as a child at 1 Merrion Square & there is now a statue of him in the Merrion Square Park, while W.B Yeats lived at No 82, and Daniel O’Connell at No 58. Georgian architecture in Dublin was built originally the early 18th century and the building continued through to the 1830s. This style was named after King George of England as Ireland was ruled by England then. Georgian architecture consists of tall red brick terraced houses, four floors over basement. The houses were built in straight lines and squares and in the centre of the squares was usually a park for the exclusive use of the residents of Georgian Dublin. Time permitting the group might like to have some free time in the city before travelling outside of the city to the hotel.
