Principal’s Report 2013

In 2013, I returned to St Catherine’s following a year as Acting Principal at St Joseph’s School, Hectorville. It was wonderful to return to the community and be a part of the happenings in our school again. 2013 produced many valuable experiences which stimulated our students, engaging them in learning and personal development in a continued safe and encouraging environment. Throughout 2013, the School Board continued to keep our School Development Goals and Professional Learning Objectives a priority as we worked with our community to achieve successful learning outcomes for all. A whole school survey took place in early 2013 where our families were invited to contribute their thoughts and ideas on the future of our school through a family survey. The questions were: If you had a piece of advice for us as we continue in our work, what would it be? What are your aspirations for your child/children at St Catherine’s? What three words best describe St Catherine’s? This data was used by the School Board to discuss and prioritise our focus for the year. The board chose Communication, Student Well Being and Global Citizens for our focus work which continues in 2014.

Learning through Inquiry is at the heart of St Catherine’s staff practice in their systematic investigation to improve and change. Inquiry involves a purposeful process of researching, informing and reflection for action on the strategic priorities. Staff teams focussed on the following in professional learning: • Continuing to upgrade and meet ICT needs to assist students with their learning • Strong focus on establishing the Jolly Phonics programme through the Early Years • The establishment of a parent/family focus on Nature Play and improvements in our Forest Area • Striving to build community engagement with the highlight being the Stirling Arts Festival in November 2013 • Gathering more data on students to gain a deeper understanding of the needs. This was particularly through

numeracy professional learning throughout the year, as staff worked with two consultants from the CEO, Katrina Mattsson and Catherine McCluskey

• Building exemplary practice in professional practice by focus on staff professional learning goals • Improving the functionality of the school website with the launch of a new website in late 2013 A priority in whole school Professional Learning was the focus on Numeracy in the Australian Curriculum. Catholic Education Numeracy Consultants, Katrina and Catherine provided a series of workshops for teachers throughout the year in the conceptual understandings and deepening of content knowledge in Mathematics, particularly focussing on data collection and building competence and confidence to improve student outcomes. St Catherine’s School was asked to begin collaboration with the Early Childhood Organisation of SA as 6 schools focussed their learning on how best to build positive outcomes for students beginning school in Reception. We were privileged to gain a mentor through this programme and our team of Katie Ashmead, Gaby Lugg, Alison Edwards and myself, gained much from this experience. We joined other staff in learning days and I attended Leaders sessions. We will be part of this project again in 2014. This programme was under the guidance of consultant, Lisa Burman, who we have worked with for many years as our ‘expert in residence’. Our continued commitment to being an environmental and ecological focussed school saw the school focus on a new initiative as a Nature Play school. This will develop further in 2014 but has provided in its establishment a wonderful experience of working alongside our parents as together we plan for the future. This school snapshot of involvement and improvement in professional learning of teachers supports our core business to advance the educational goals for all students.

St Catherine’s welcomed Briony Fitzgerald who was appointed for a position as a Year 1/2 teacher within the Early Years team. Briony previously worked at St Joseph’s School, Barmera in the Riverland. Joining the Primary Years team is Kelly-Ann Kirby, nostalgically returning to St Catherine’s from St Joseph’s at Norwood, on a 12 month exchange with Andrew Merrigan. Jane Everett took up the position as a Design and Technology specialist teacher with the senior team, expanding the rich learning environment for students in Years 5, 6 and 7. We were pleased to welcome Michelle Weatherald, who brings enthusiasm and dedication to the position of Co-ordinator in the OSHC program at St Catherine’s. It is with great regret and sadness however, that Lizzie Gregory, our Music specialist resigned from her position at St Catherine’s as from the end of Term 1. We wish Lizzie every blessing as she pursues her passion for teaching music within the middle/senior secondary years. From April, we welcomed Alice Combe to this role. Alice went on to successfully gain a permanent 0.4 position as Music/Drama Teacher. Susie Ryan was appointed a Year 3 / 4 teacher for the 2013 school year, Unfortunately, due to ill health, Susie was unable to continue in this position. Jane Everett kindly accepted this position for the remainder of the school year. Katie Ashmead took Maternity Leave from the end of May with the impending birth of her second child. We welcomed Bec Percival as her replacement till the end of 2013. As well, permanent full-time positions were gained by Emily Wight and Lukas Antoniadis.

Principal’s Report 2013

2013 saw our major community event change to a Stirling Arts Festival. It was a wonderful success led by a magnificent team of parents with Esteé Fiebiger-Briggs as Coordinator. I thank the generosity of those parents who worked tirelessly and were rewarded with a highly successful family orientated day which our community thoroughly supported. It was truly a highlight of the year! As well, our community enjoyed a Cocktail Night, Movie Night and School Disco.

The vibrant and enthusiastic group of parents who form Parents & Friends group gathered twice a term with the aim of promoting and building community engagement and spirit. I commend this community group. Thank you to the School Board members and Parents & Friends group for the work you have carried out in 2013. We give thanks for the depth of expertise each member has brought to the St Catherine’s Community. As well, in 2013 I completed my 5 Year review and was delighted to be re-appointed to St Catherine’s School as Principal. As the year concluded I accepted a role for one term at St Francis Xavier’s Regional Catholic School at Wynn Vale as Acting Principal. We were fortunate to gain the expertise and experience of Terry Kluzek to take my role during this period. I wish to acknowledge and thank the exemplary staff of St Catherine’s for their commitment and professional expertise in 2013. Special thanks to the highly skilled administration staff of Helen Benbow, Samantha Ellul and Natalie Klein, who have provided much support, skill and enthusiasm to their roles at St Catherine’s. APRIM’s Report 2013

‘Opening Doors’ was the theme of our Beginning of Year Whole School Mass and it remained a call to action and source of inspiration and direction for the remainder of 2013. It was reflected in our pedagogy, deepening our commitment to hearing the voice of the child; in our pursuit of sustainability, by attending to the voice of creation; and in our desire to engage students deeply and authentically in Religious Education, to hear and value the voice of God. We continued to nurture our mutually supportive relationship with the Adelaide Hills Parish, in which we dwell. Fr Charles deepened his connection with our students and families, through his weekly visits to say Mass in our beautiful ‘Treehouse’. Each class attended one of these a term and it was a special opportunity for them to experience a simple and very personal experience of Mass, attuned to the age of the students. These proved to be rich times for relationship building, allowing the students, Fr Charles, staff and parents attending to get to know each other. Sue Sachse, the Parish Pastoral Coordinator was also often present along with the occasional parishioner, so we felt truly gifted by this tangible parish presence. Monthly Sunday Family Masses were hosted by classes in turn, and it was especially heart -warming to see families attend who would not normally do so. In early September, Fr Charles moved to the Aberfoyle Park parish and he was lovingly farewelled. In his place, we welcomed Fr Sam, who generously agreed to continue saying Mass for us. Through these weekly visits, we all began to get to know each other. A new cycle of Sacramental preparation began in June, led by a team comprised of Parish and school staff. This programme which is ‘Parish Based, School Supported and Family Based’, is yet another example of our interconnectedness. Student engagement in Social Justice increased this year in that many initiatives were the result of classes, through their learning in Religious Education, perceiving a need or an issue requiring attention and taking action. In the past, this had largely been the domain of the ‘Kids on the Case’ Social Justice Group. This ownership of, interest in and responsibility for ‘our neighbours’ both locally and globally, is a substantial mind shift and was a joy to behold and be part of. Staff continued to be active in terms of Professional Development. In 2103, our school participated in three inquiry projects; Rich Assessment in Religious Education; Leadership for Staff Spiritual Formation and Ecological Sustainability. All staff either have or are working towards a Graduate Certificate in RE (or equivalent qualification) one has a Master’s Degree and another continued progressing towards it. A range of Professional Development opportunities were offered by the Religious Education Team at the Catholic Education Office after hours and during holidays. Our staff attended these also, in order to deepen their faith and increase their knowledge and understanding. St Catherine’s is first and foremost a Catholic School. Our faith informs and underpins every aspect of school life and is the foundation of our identity. We have inherited a rich heritage and our task is to reinterpret it for the times in which we find ourselves. Inspired by Jesus whom we come to know through the gospels, and sure of God’s love, we are blessed in the partnership we have with families in the wholistic education and care of their children. CHAIRPERSON’s Report 2013

St. Catherine’s School Board continued to oversee another busy and productive year in 2013 that saw a further raft of measures implemented to support quality learning outcomes for our children and underpin the teaching and support staff in achieving those outcomes. During 2013 St. Catherine’s also saw staff appointments and exchange placements that further underpinned the strength and capability at St. Catherine’s School. A continuation of the current exchange placement program was extended in 2013, with Andrew Merrigan taking up a permanent position at St. Joseph’s School, Norwood commencing in 2014 and Kelly-Ann Kirby continuing at St. Catherine’s School. We welcome Terry Kluzek in 2014 as acting principal whilst Leonie DeGaris takes up a Term 1 secondment at St Francis Xavier, Wynn Vale. The Stirling Arts Festival is a much looked forward to event at St. Catherine’s and continued to enjoy wide and strong support / participation from our school and local business community. The exhibition again proved to be a popular event during 2013 in the revised format. From a financial perspective, St. Catherine’s School in 2013 maintained its expenditure in line with forecast parameters and achieved a sound result. It should be noted that in 2013 the board ratified and endorsed the projected budget for 2014 with a 6 percent increase in school fees. This increase was under forecast CEO projections identified as the minimum applicable increase. Fellow school board members at St. Catherine’s dedicate their time to the benefit our school community and without their commitment, the outcomes achieved thus far would not be possible. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Adam Barrera, Irene Condon, Michael Rust, Cam Schubert and Ben Ziesing. Adam, Irene, Michael, Cam and Ben’s contribution assisted the board in providing a sound platform and basis for the results achieved during their term. The departure of these 5 members has created vacancies on the School Board for 2014. I would encourage parents to give consideration to participating on the St. Catherine’s School Board and contributing to the future of our children’s learning. Everything our community achieves at St. Catherine’s School is a direct result of the dedication of our school staff and community. I take this opportunity to invite and encourage all to participate in our school community to ensure future success in 2014. Mark Kennedy Chairperson

PARENTS & FRIENDS Chairperson’s Report 2013

The Parents and Friends group in 2013 had a great year, hosting many events and succeeding in meeting our fundraising target. Last year we focussed on building community. Several events were held with community as the focus but happily most of those also raised money. For example, we commenced the year with a Cocktail Party designed to be minimal effort (in terms of organisation) which could bring together parents and friends from all year levels in a fun, social environment. At sports day we introduced a toddler’s play area to include the more junior members of our community and our mothers were treated to a lovely high tea to celebrate Mother’s Day. The school disco, the movie night and the St Catherine’s float in the Stirling pageant were all big hits for the students who enjoy spending time with one another outside of school. The community building emphasis was also part of the reason for a change in format from the Fine Arts Exhibition to an Arts Festival. As I said, fortunately all of these events (aside from the pageant) had the added benefit of raising money as well. Other activities designed more as fundraisers were still a lot of fun such as the tea towel fundraiser, Easter raffle, Entertainment Books and the Election Day stalls. All of these events would not have been possible without the help of many members of our community. We were lucky to have offers of help from so many of our parents which ensured the load was shared and volunteering was enjoyable rather than becoming a burden. Personally I feel sharing of the load is something I would like to continue to encourage and in doing so provide opportunities for parents to help in a variety of ways – making the most of our varied talents. There are too many parents to thank everyone individually so I thank everyone who flipped a sausage, baked a cake, or organised an event. I would like to particularly thank Natalie Klein for all her assistance. Throughout the year Natalie ensured all of our ideas and grand plans were followed through in the correct way and her organisation and attention to detail were paramount in the success of all events. This year the Parents and Friends Group will be operating with a Treasurer but for now I attach a summary of the financial report for last year. You will see this report focuses in great detail on the Arts Festival which did account for over 50% of the funds raised last year. The change in format of the Arts Festival was a very big decision for us last year and one which was met with mixed feelings. From my observations and discussions I believe a good time was had by everyone and we succeeded in celebrating our community whilst raising our target figure of $12,000. We knew with a change in format we could not afford to rely on one major event for all of our fundraising which is why we made a commitment to pursue fundraising throughout the year –a commitment we managed to fulfil thanks to the efforts of many. I thank our Principal and all of the staff for their ongoing support of the Parents and Friends and commend them all for their dedication to our children. I am looking forward to again filling the role of Chairperson in 2014 and am already excited by the enthusiasm and spirit of volunteerism evident in our community. I invite questions about my report and also the financial report Esteé Fiebiger-Briggs P & F Chairperson

ST CATHERINE’S SCHOOL PERFORMANCE REPORT 2013 This report is a requirement of the Commonwealth Government as outlined in the Schools Assistance Act 2009. Contextual Information St Catherine's School, Stirling is situated in the picturesque Adelaide Hills. The school was founded by the Dominican sisters and promotes excellence in every dimension of a child's life, with special emphasis on the faith formation of students and their families in the Catholic tradition. St Catherine's School caters for students in Reception to Year 7. We endeavour to develop rich, contemporary learning environments that are personalised, relevant and challenging. The school has a strong arts programme, playgroup and OSHC service, along with a committed and supportive parent community. Specialist areas include Physical Education, Italian and an active Music programme. We respect and care for our earth and acknowledge that we are all called to be ecological leaders. The environment and sustainability are areas of focus in our school. St Catherine's has a three pond wetland system which the students manage through planting, weeding and mulching. We have a permaculture garden, water tanks, bokashi composting bins, solar panels and worm farms. The ICSEA score for St Catherine’s is 116. St Catherine's strength lies in the evidence of enriched learning experiences for children. It is highlighted by the fellowship achieved in a small, happy, enthusiastic school community where we have the opportunity to develop close and lasting friendships. Informed by our Dominican heritage, we are hope-filled and futures-focussed. Characteristics of the Student Body Total Enrolments 214 Girls 120 Boys 94 Indigenous 0

1. Staff Attendance

Teaching staff attendance for the 2013 school year was 95% and our teachers took sick leave, carer’s leave and bereavement leave, as is their industrial entitlement.

2. Staff Retention In Term 1 2013, 98% of our teaching staff was retained from the beginning of the previous program year. We celebrate the expertise, talent and commitment that our new staff members bring to the community.

3. Staff Qualifications In our school we are fortunate to have a number of teachers with two or more qualifications in education. In addition to the formal qualifications listed below, all staff undergo training in Mandatory Notification and First Aid.

Qualification Masters Degree 8% Bachelor Degree 92% Graduate Certificate 50% Diploma 25%

4. Expenditure and Teacher Participation in Professional Learning

In 2013 there has been 100% participation by the teaching staff in professional learning. There was a wide range of significant professional learning involving the whole school, Learning Areas and individual teaching staff. As the school community has been informed of many of these throughout 2013, I will outline some of the professional learning that has informed curriculum development for this program year. In 2013 $1040- per teacher was spent on professional learning. In addition to this, Catholic Education SA provides professional development and consultancy services for all Catholic Education SA schools. Our teaching staff have been involved in rich research projects supported by Catholic Education SA Consultants and this has been in addition to the $1040- per teacher on professional learning.

As well as the above individual Professional Development which the staff undertook, the whole school staff also participated in a number of activities which occurred during Pupil Free Days and during Staff Meetings. These were as follows:

Activity Sessions Hours (Total) Hazard Management 1 3 Abuse and Neglect 1 3 First Aid 1 6 Conflict Resolution 1 3 Risk Management 1 6 Manual Handling 1 3 Slips Trips and Falls 1 3 Stress Management 1 3

An annual review is undertaken with all staff to improve our structures, processes, curriculum and administration of the school at the end of each school year. Each staff member participated in their annual review discussion with the Principal in Term 3.

5. NAPLAN 2013 In May 2013, our Year 3, 5 and 7 students participated in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy ( NAPLAN) and were tested in the areas of Reading, Writing, Spelling, Language Conventions (Grammar and Punctuation) and Numeracy. Participation rates were high for all year levels with only 2 students not sitting the test. Teachers ensure that all students are familiarised with the testing format each year which is often very different from normal classroom practice. When we look at our performance compared to the national average, St Catherine’s bettered the national average in 14 out of the 15 tests across the 3 year levels. There were noticeable gains across all year levels in the results for Grammar and Punctuation and Numeracy. As well as measuring student achievement levels, the data also shows individual student improvement from the testing 2 years ago. We were delighted to see that 43% of Year 7 students were in the ‘upper’ category for student progress in reading (ie student progress between the 2011 test and the 2013 test was high) Similarly, 35% of the Year 5 cohort were in the ‘upper’ category for student progress in Reading and 40% in Mathematics. It is important to remember that this is just one element of the information that the school collects on student learning. Combined with other data, we use the results to inform our teaching practice and to guide choices about future professional development.

6. School Funding As a Catholic School we rely on the prompt payment of school fees to assist with the operation of the school. The school receives its income from three main sources:

• Australian Government funding; • Private Income from school fees and levies; • State Government funding

The graph below show that approximately 59% of our funding comes from the State and Australian government funding and the balance is from private income.

Page 11: Stirling, South Australia - Our Treehouse · ST CATHERINE’S SCHOOL . Stirling, South Australia . together in faith, learning and community . St Catherine’s School . 22 Ayers Hill

St Catherine’s School Performance Report 2013

Therefore, without the payment of school fees, the school would be unable to provide many of the resources that we currently offer. The school attempts to minimise the level of fee increases; however salary increases and demands for education resource (in particular information technology costs) mean that fee increase must occur each year. In 2013 the overall School Fees increased by 5%.

The school has undertaken over $2.75m of capital (building) development over the last five years. The school has accessed approximately $2m in grant funding from the Australian Government via the Building Education Revolution (BER) program. The South Australian State Government does not provide funds for capital development in Non-Government schools. The school has a building fund and contributions to this fund are fully tax deductable. Contributions to this fund are used solely for capital purposes, as part of a capital project for the reduction of debt. Either way they greatly assist the school in being able to provide the resources and facilities it currently offers students.

7. Value Added Programs at St Catherine’s School
