Holy Oils. The chu rch makes use of three kinds of Holy Oils: Oil of the Sick, Oil of the Catechumens, and Holy Chrism Oil. They are all ol-
ive oil, but each is sanctified by a special blessing that designates it for its specific purpose. The oils are disturbed tothe par-ishes during a special Holy Chrism Mass conducted annually at the Diocesan Cathedral. Members of each parish attend the
mass and are presented with the oils which they take home to their parish. Any oil that is left over from last year must be dis-posed of properly. Our left over oil is burned in the fire at the Easter Vigil. It is a requirement that holy oils be stored in an ap-propriate secure case in the sanctuary. Ours is kept in the beautiful ambry made by Mike Kozelsky for Fr Bob, who donated it
to the church. It is located on the wall to the left of the altar. Each oil has a distinctive purpose:
Oil of the Sick is used in the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, or it can be used at any time and in any place. The Priestlays hands on the sick or the elderly person, says a special prayer, and makes the sign of the cross on the person's forehead
and palms of the hands. Through this sacrament, God gives the sick or elderly person grace and strength to bear the illness orinfirmity. Many have witnessed this anointing bring spiritual, emotional, and even physical healing to the anointed person.
Oil of the Catechumens is used to anoint both-infants and adults prior to baptism. At the beginning of RCIAeach person pre-paring for initiation is anointed. This rite normally takes place prior to the Holy Communion. After the anointing, the priest
prays that God will instill them with wisdom for discernment and with the strength necessary to avoid evil during the inquiryinto the Catholic faith and their preparation for life with Christ. In a similar way, an infant is anointed just before receiving the
waters of baptism. This anointing is to help the child ward off evil, avoid temptation, and keep faith with Christ throughoutlife.
Holy Chrism Oil is different from the other oils. Balsam is added to the oil to give it a pleasant fragrance. It was called myrrh inBiblical times. It is used in the sacraments of baptism, confirmation, and the administration of Holy Orders. It is also used by
the Bishop in the consecration of a new church or altar, and on other special occasions.

The Gospel accounts attest to the reality of the \FROM ,. ..., resurrection of Jesus from the grave. Jesus goesTHE ~ to great lengths to assure his disciples that he is
~VnJlSTOR no mere ghost or illusion. He shows them the
· . rJ-t ,I marks of his crucifixion and he explains how theScriptures foretold his death and rising.
Jerome (347-420 AD), an early church bible scholar, comments:
"As he showed them real hands and a real side, he really ate with hisdisciples; really walked with Cleophas; conversed with men with a real
tongue; really reclined at supper; with 'rea! hands took bread, blessed andbroke it, and was offering it to them ... Do not put the power of the Lord onthe level with the tricks of magicians, so that he may appear to have beenwhat he was not, and may be thought to have eaten without teeth, walked
I without feet, broken bread without hands, spoken without a tongue, andI
\ showed a side which had no ribs. " ,\ I, /
