Sincere thanks for the support that we received for Gala Day. It was great watching the students support each other as they raised money for Project Compassion and The Mary MacKillop Foundation. I’d like to thank Sarah Lawson for the way she co-ordinated the day and empowered the students to raise $1471.40. Thanks to the parents who assisted the students in a number of ways. An amazing effort.

3 WAY INTERVIEWSSincere thanks to the staff who not only did a great job in providing an overview of how each child is progressing emotionally and socially but also for the time taken in preparing and presenting this information. I hope you were able to celebrate many things and set goals for further improvement and consolidation.

ARRIVAL AT SCHOOLIt is great to see our students keen and eager to get to school early - which I admit is a lot better than arriving late. To see our students prepared for school and playing co-operatively in the yard is excellent, but recently several students are arriving to school and playing in the yard prior at 8.30am, which is unsupervised time. Please ensure your child/ren aren’t arriving before 8.30am.

Walkathon - 6th aprilOn Friday 6th April our students will take part in our bi-annual Schools/Centre Walkathon. Every second year the Clare schools and centre walk varying lengths of the Riesling Trail raising money for local initiatives which benefit so many in the community. This year the monies raised will go towards continued upgrade of the popular Sevenhill Adventure Playground, student involvement in the Wetlands, and Active Travel to School Initiatives. The students will arrive at School at the normal time wearing sports uniform, they will make their lunch (with support) as there is no canteen, and then depart by bus to their allocated walking spot, depending on their age, and arrive back at Clare Oval for lunch. This year games will be organised after lunch to encourage students from all sites to interact. Please ensure your child brings their hat, waterbottle and sponsorship form on the day.

SportS DaY - 13th aprilWe are looking forward to seeing you at Clare High School on Friday 13th April. As it is the last day of term and the buses will be running earlier on this day (departing 2.30pm) we have put forward the starting time to coincide with this and therefore ask you to arrive at CHS by 8.15am ready for an 8.30am start.

We are extremely fortunate to be able to use the Clare High School’s magnificent grounds but unfortunately in the past some parents are jeopardising this by parking in the wrong places. CHS provide us with a parking area in the Ag block which is sign posted. Please do not park:- on the road- down at the Stadium- in the student car park- where the buses turn

SCHOOL NEWSAGMThanks to those who either attended or sent an apology for our recent Annual General Meeting.

At the meeting reports were presented by the Principal, Chairperson (Matt Lawson) & Treasurer (Matt Butler). This was an opportunity to hear, first-hand, a comprehensive report on the achievements and challenges faced by our school in 2017. It was also a chance to ask questions, formally or informally, of those who are involved in the decision making for St Joseph’s School, Clare.

At the meeting we recognised the service rendered by retiring Board members Kathleen Bourne, Matt Paulett and Brendan Ackland. We received nominations from Anna Hawker, Matt Butler & Alex Nicholls who were duly elected. All positions were declared vacant and the Board then elected its new Executive.

It gives me great pleasure in announcing the 2018 School Board:

The 2017 Board is proud to announce that we finished the year in a strong financial position – a slight increase in the “cash held in reserve”; we launched the school’s Strategic Plan 2018-2020: completed the school’s Master Plan; reviewed several policies (including Bullying & Harassment); approved an ICT strategy which involves moving towards 1:1 devices; oversaw the spending of significant capital improvement and can proudly say the school is free of debt, having paid out the loan on the property at 25 Victoria Rd.

p&FOur P& F will hold its AGM on Monday 9th April at 4pm in the library. This is a great way to acknowledge the wonderful work of the outgoing Chairperson Alison Mason, Secretary Belinda Green and Treasurer Sarah Rodwell. You will have the opportunity to listen to a report by the Chairperson, Treasurer, Canteen and ask questions or receive an update from the uniform committee, Fete, New Parents dinner and find out more about how the “Class Representatives” will work this year. We have received nominations for all positions except Treasurer (this job will receive support from the outgoing Treasurer and also Sarah Werfel - if you are at all interested, please contact me or come along to the meeting). This year

we are also looking to establish a Fundraising Committee. If you have any ideas, suggestions etc, now is your opportunity to come forward. A current overview of P&F operations is on page 8.

enhancinG catholic School iDentitY (ecSi) SURVEYThis year our school is taking part in the Enhancing Catholic Schools’ Identity (ECSI) survey which will assist us in better understanding how our Catholic Identity is expressed in work and practice here at St Joseph’s School, Clare. The Catholic University in Leuven, (Katholieke Universiteit, Leuven) was commissioned by the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria Ltd (CECV) to design a process and tools, based on sound research, to accomplish the goal of understanding our current Catholic identity and where the school community might like to see it in the future. Catholic Education SA is a partner in this research. Many Catholic schools have been involved in this process over the last few years.This survey is a key element in this process and we therefore request your participation. The online survey gathers responses from students in Years 5 to 7, all staff, and a representative sample of parents. All parents will have received a letter this week with instructions on how to undertake this survey.Please note, the more responses we receive, the better the data will be able to assist us to achieve a more authentic Catholic Identity. Your responses to this survey are anonymous.We ask that you please complete the survey by Friday 13 April to assist us in the collating of data. SapSaSa knockoUt teamSLast week I had the pleasure of being involved with five young gentlemen who represented our school in the SAPSASA Knockout Tennis. We played Central Yorke in the 2nd round at the Clare Town courts.

Our boys were too strong for the opposition however they valued the hit and displayed excellent sportsmanship.

SCHOOL NEWSSapSaSa (catholic primarY School) SWIMMING CARNIVAL Once again St Joseph’s School were enthusiastic participants in this year’s round of the Catholic School Swimming Carnivals. We were represented by 20 of our students and competed in the Division 1 Carnival held at the Burnside Pool on Monday 19th MarchCongratulations to all of our team. The day’s highlights included several ‘personal best’ performances including, for several students, the first opportunity to compete in an Olympic size (50 m) pool.James Stockman continues to excel in his swimming taking out the overall U12 Individual Age Champion Medal. St Joseph’s also claimed the overall U12 Age Champions Pennant.Overall we finished 2nd, which is an outstanding result given that we are one of the smaller schools (and only country school) competing in that division.Once again we had a fantastic ‘support crew’ of parents and grandparents who provided enthusiastic encouragement and support throughout the carnival. Thank you most sincerely; these events would not be possible without your support. Thank you also to all the parents who assisted with various official duties on the day. A very special Thank You to Anna Hawker who, once again, was invaluable as our coach & support person for the team.

St JoSeph’S Gala DaY celeBrationS, tUeSDaY 20 MARCHLast Tuesday we held our St Joseph’s Gala Day. This day celebrates the good works of St Joseph and also of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop, our school patrons, who both believed in following in Jesus’ footsteps and helping those less fortunate. This fundraiser raised a sizable sum for both Project Compassion and The Mary MacKillop Foundation who carry on the good works of their forebears. Thank you to all staff, parents and students for your contributions. A special thank you is extended to our LEAD students, Sarah Lawson – LEAD teacher, Sarah Werfel and Jodie Tonkin, for the many hours of work they put into ensuring the day ran smoothly.I am excited to announce that as a school we raised $1471.40. proJect compaSSionProject Compassion continues during the Lenten Liturgical Season of the Catholic Church and ends at Easter time. We are encouraged during this time to give generously to this worthwhile Catholic Charity which is helping to create a just world for all people. People are able to donate via the Project Compassion boxes which were sent home at the beginning of Lent to the eldest child in the family. Project Compassion boxes can be returned to the front office from Tuesday 3 April through until the end of Term 1. Thank you for your generous support and for helping our world to be a more ‘just’ world for all.

comBineD pariSheS maSS, SUnDaY 18 march On Sunday March 18 the parish came together to celebrate a Mass with members of the Riverton, Manoora, Saddleworth and Marrabel Church communities. Japanese Cultural Studies

What we have learnt about Japan• It has four main islands, but over 3000 islands

altogether.• It is much smaller than Australia but has a much

bigger population – around 27 million!!• Mt Fuji is near the capital city of Tokyo and is an

active volcano.• Its money is called Japanese Yen.• We import many things from there, including: cars,

musical instruments, motorbikes, hair products.• Their three main religions are Shinto, Buddhism and

Christianity.Years R-2 have beenpracticing their Origami

skills.

While we are in the season of Autumn, Japan is having Spring.

During Spring the beautiful cherry blossom trees are in full bloom (but not for long!).

Japanese people celebrate the ‘Sakura’ Festivalby picnicking, painting, photographing or just

admiring the cherry blossoms before they all fall.

The Year 4/5 class had a visit from Nick Pill. He has recently returned from eight years in Japan teaching English as a Second Language. He spoke about his

experiences, here are some:

• Bikes and pedestrians share the footpath.• They have outside shoes and inside slippers.• The toilets play music so others cannot hear

any ‘noises’.• At train stations there are ‘People Pushers’ who

push people onto the trains to hurry them up.

Welcome to our first, soon to be regular, newsletter inclusion! in this space we will keep you updated on what’s happening in our school uniform shop, such as new stock arrivals, second-hand items and reminders.********************************************************************First up for anyone waiting for school sport shorts in size 12, these have finally arrived after a supply delay and are ready to order!It has been great to see lots of families utilising our new Qkr! app for purchasing uniform items! It is certainly making a difference for office staff and volunteers, we hope you are enjoying the convenience too!The cool mornings of Autumn are certainly upon us, meaning we’re digging out those jumpers again! Please, please, please ensure your child’s jumper, & hat, are clearly labelled for easy return!!There are lots of second-hand jumpers, blue shirts, grey pants/shorts available at the moment, as well as a few other items if any families are wanting spares.(Please note - second-hand items cannot be purchased on the Qkr! app, as not all sizes are available and item condition varies.)As the end of Term 1 draws near, a reminder that girls will be required to wear NAVY socks or tights with their school dress in Terms 2 & 3, in accordance with our school uniform policy! We have both items in stock

Each year, our Year 7 students head to Canberra as part of their Civics & Citizenship studies. To help them get there, and understand the work and preparation that goes in to earning the funds for such an excursion, the students help their parents fundraise. At the moment they have TWO events on the go:

FireWooD FUnDraiSerWinter is on its way and predictions are this will be one of the coldest winters on record. Keep your

home fires burning with a trailer load of wood – cut and loaded by our Year 7 families.

Included with this newsletter is an order form.

Year 7 Fundraising for Canberra Trip

CANTEEN

KIDS IN THE KITCHENBanana choc chip cake125g butter¾ cup sugar1 teaspoon vanilla essence1 egg, lightly beaten2 ripe bananas, mashed1 ½ cups self-raising flour¼ cup milk½ bag of milk chocolate chips

Melt the butter and sugar in a medium sized saucepan, while stirring. Add vanilla essence.Remove from the heat. Add mashed banana and stir until just blended. Add egg and mix well.Stir in the flour. Add milk and mix lightly.When cooled, add chocolate chips.Put mixture into a prepared (lined with baking paper or buttered and floured) square or log tin.Bake at 170 degrees for 40-45 minutes.Turn out and allow to cool slightly. Then enjoy!

Mindfulness for Mums, Dads, Grandparents, Carers, Everyone!

We are running our six week Mindfulness Program

in Clare in Term 2, 2018

Starting Wednesday 9th May to Wednesday 13th June 7.00pm – 8.30pm

In these 1 ½ hour sessions we will explore techniques to:

~ improve mental clarity, concentration, relaxation and sleep

~ learn to be in the present moment and out of ‘auto pilot’

~ have more balance in our lives and less emotional reactivity

~ reduce stress ~ improve relationships

~ become less judgmental of ourselves and others
